Use fixed broadband as your primary connection and an independently provisioned mobile-data connection as backup, with a dual-WAN router or firewall set to fail over when the broadband internet path stops working. Connect your FFmpeg computer to that router by Ethernet. This can restore connectivity automatically, but a change of route or IP address may interrupt the existing YouTube ingest session; test the complete setup before relying on it for a live event.
What you need—and what failover can and cannot do
- Two independent internet paths: fixed broadband as primary and mobile broadband as standby. A phone hotspot that depends on the same failed connection is not an independent backup.
- A dual-WAN router or firewall: it must support failover and be compatible with the chosen cellular modem or WAN connection.
- An FFmpeg computer connected by Ethernet: this reduces the chance that local Wi-Fi becomes the weak link.
- A tested stream configuration: both internet paths must sustain the chosen upload bitrate with headroom.
WAN failover changes the network route used by FFmpeg. It does not guarantee that YouTube will preserve the same ingest session through the route change. YouTube’s separate backup-encoder workflow can provide another resilience layer, but it is distinct from router-level WAN failover. YouTube advises testing encoder failover by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable and checking that the player rolls over to the backup encoder (YouTube Help: Streaming tips).
Choose and measure the backup connection
Use a genuinely separate path
Keep broadband as the preferred WAN and add a mobile-data connection from a carrier that works at the streaming location. If possible, avoid relying on the same local access network or power arrangement for both links. Coverage, congestion, radio conditions and equipment compatibility vary by site; there is no universally best Indian operator established here.
Test upload at the venue
Run repeated upload tests where the stream will run, including at the times you expect to broadcast. Plan around measured, sustained upload capacity—not the advertised download speed. YouTube says the total stream bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends 20% headroom. If using primary and backup encoders, YouTube recommends enough capacity for both streams plus 20% (YouTube Help: Streaming tips).

TRAI requires providers to declare typical speeds but does not prescribe a minimum broadband upload speed. Mobile performance at your venue and the plan’s usable data allowance therefore need to be checked directly. TRAI also notes that a plan may reduce speed after a fair-usage limit, so check whether post-threshold speed can sustain the stream for its full duration (TRAI).
Select and configure dual-WAN equipment
Choose a router or firewall that supports two WANs and automatic failover. OPNsense documents multi-WAN configurations and cellular modems as a primary or failover WAN; exact modem and appliance support depends on the hardware, firmware, radio bands and carrier (OPNsense multi-WAN documentation). Verify compatibility for the exact router and modem before buying.

- Connect both WANs. Attach fixed broadband as the primary WAN and the compatible cellular modem or mobile broadband device as the standby WAN.
- Set WAN priority. Configure the fixed connection as preferred and mobile as the failover route. Interface names and menus depend on the router or firewall software.
- Configure health checks. Set monitoring to detect loss of internet reachability, not merely whether the modem still has a physical link. Follow the device maker’s documented multi-WAN and cellular setup.
- Connect the FFmpeg computer by Ethernet. Confirm its default route goes through the dual-WAN device and that the mobile connection is online and usable before streaming.
- Check the switchover behavior. Confirm whether your configuration fails back to broadband when it returns, and whether that second route change interrupts an active stream.
Set FFmpeg and YouTube for the available upload
Choose a resolution and frame rate, then set the video bitrate to a value both WANs can sustain with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Use YouTube’s current, resolution-specific bitrate guidance rather than assuming one bitrate fits every stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS and constant bitrate (CBR); its guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds (YouTube Help: Streaming tips; YouTube live encoder settings).
In YouTube Studio, use the stream’s assigned stream key and ingest settings in your FFmpeg output. Keep the key private; anyone with access may be able to send video to that stream. Confirm the preview and stream-health indicators before making the broadcast public. YouTube’s recommendations can change, so consult its live encoder settings page when choosing bitrate and resolution.

Optional FFmpeg output recovery
FFmpeg documents FIFO output recovery options that may help an output recover after a temporary failure. One documented option pattern is:
-f fifo -fifo_format flv -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1
Place and adapt these options for the actual FFmpeg command and version; they are not a substitute for a second WAN and do not guarantee YouTube will keep the same live session. Check the installed FFmpeg version’s option documentation and logs before using them (FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation).

Run an outage drill before the event
- Start a private or otherwise appropriate test stream and confirm YouTube receives the preview with healthy audio and video.
- Watch the router’s WAN status, FFmpeg logs and YouTube stream health while the stream runs.
- Disconnect the primary broadband WAN or its Ethernet feed to simulate an outage.
- Observe whether the router switches to mobile data, whether FFmpeg reconnects, and whether the YouTube player resumes or requires a new ingest session.
- Restore broadband and observe whether failback causes another interruption.
- Repeat with the mobile backup unavailable so you know what happens if the primary link fails while the backup is also unusable.
- If using a backup encoder, test that separately using YouTube’s documented failover procedure.
YouTube recommends thoroughly testing the setup, monitoring audio and video, and checking the integrity and growth of local archive files. A local recording can help distinguish a network ingest problem from an issue with capture or encoding (YouTube Help: Streaming tips).
Troubleshoot common failure points
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The router never switches to mobile data | The standby WAN is not connected, is incompatible, or the health check only detects link status. | Verify modem compatibility and mobile connectivity; configure gateway monitoring for internet reachability. |
| FFmpeg reports an output error after broadband drops | The route change broke the existing output session, or the backup link is not usable. | Check FFmpeg logs, WAN status and mobile upload. Determine from the outage drill whether FFmpeg needs to reconnect or YouTube needs a new ingest session. |
| YouTube reports poor stream health on mobile | The mobile link cannot sustain the configured bitrate, or its radio performance is variable. | Repeat upload tests at the venue and lower the bitrate or resolution until both links have headroom. |
| Backup works briefly, then slows or stops | The mobile plan may have reached a fair-usage threshold or run short of data. | Check the plan’s data allowance and post-threshold speed against the intended stream duration. |
| The stream breaks when broadband returns | Automatic failback triggered a second route or session change. | Test failback behavior and configure WAN priority or failback policy to suit the event’s tolerance for interruption. |
Costs and reliability choices
Budget for the dual-WAN router or firewall, any compatible cellular modem, and a mobile plan with enough usable data and post-threshold speed. Specific equipment prices, Indian plan prices and local coverage are not established here, so compare compatible models and verify service at your location before committing.

For higher-stakes events, consider whether a separate backup encoder is worthwhile in addition to WAN failover. The router protects against loss of the primary internet path; an encoder adds a separate source of video ingest. Neither eliminates the need to test the actual switchover and YouTube playback behavior.
