Apple’s current consumer setup instructions describe Apple Home and the Home app—not a product setup process for an operating system called “homeOS.” To connect smart-home devices, create a home in the Home app on an iPhone or iPad, add compatible accessories, and check whether your devices need a home hub or Thread support.
What you need before setting up Apple Home
Use an iPhone or iPad with the Home app, and make sure the accessory is supported by Apple Home. Before pairing, power on the accessory and connect it to the network as its instructions require. Keep it nearby and find its setup code or QR code; Apple says Home accessories may use an eight-digit Apple Home setup code, while Matter accessories may use an 11- or 21-digit code. Apple’s accessory setup guide explains the pairing flow.

Apple lists Matter accessory categories including air conditioners, bridges, lights, locks, plugs, switches, thermostats, blinds and shades, and motion, ambient-light, contact, temperature, and humidity sensors. That category list does not mean every model exposes every feature in Home. Check the exact product model’s Apple Home or Matter compatibility and its connection type before buying.
How to add a smart-home accessory to Apple Home
- Open Home on your iPhone or iPad. The first time you open the app, its setup assistant guides you through creating a home and defining rooms. If you already created a home while setting up another accessory, continue to pairing.
- Start pairing. Tap Add Accessory, or tap the Add button and then Add Accessory. Follow the on-screen instructions to scan the accessory’s QR code or enter the requested setup code.
- Use More Options for an already-paired Matter accessory. If you paired the Matter device in another app first, choose More Options in the Home pairing flow and select the accessory. The other app may provide a pairing code for this step.
- Finish the setup. Assign the accessory to a room and give it a clear name. Apple says you can use the accessory’s name with Siri. Home may also suggest automations during setup.
Apple describes the Home app as making it easier to control smart-home accessories across Apple devices. See Apple’s Home app page for its overview of the platform.

Do you need a home hub?
Matter accessories require a home hub to be added to Apple Home. Apple says HomePod and HomePod mini become hubs when set up. An Apple TV becomes a hub when you assign it to a room: open Settings > AirPlay and Apple Home, choose Room, and assign one. Apple’s hub setup guidance is dated September 22, 2025; check Apple’s current home hub instructions for details.
Choose based on what you already own and what your accessory requires. A HomePod or HomePod mini is an option if you want a speaker as well as a hub. An Apple TV is another route if you have a supported setup. Do not assume every Apple TV configuration supports Thread: Apple identifies only Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet as a Thread-capable example in its cited guidance.

Check Thread support separately
Thread is a separate compatibility requirement from Matter. A Thread accessory needs a Thread-capable hub or a compatible third-party border router for this setup path. Apple names HomePod mini and Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet as Thread-capable examples. Verify the exact accessory and hub model and configuration before purchase; a device being Matter-compatible alone does not establish that it can connect over Thread through your chosen hub. See Apple’s guidance on Thread-enabled accessories.

- Confirm that the exact model supports Apple Home or Matter; category-level support does not guarantee identical features across products.
- Check whether it connects using Wi-Fi, Thread, or another method, and whether the chosen hub or border router supports that connection.
- For Matter, account for the home-hub requirement when adding the accessory to Apple Home.
- For Thread, confirm Thread-capable hardware and the exact supported model configuration.
Apple’s product page shows ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium and Level Lock+ as examples of products shown with Apple Home, not as universal recommendations. Confirm support for the exact model and its features before purchasing. Apple’s developer information says Matter support was added in iOS 16.1 and corresponding releases; that historical version note is not a substitute for checking current model compatibility. See Apple’s Matter information for developers.

- Make sure you scan or enter the correct accessory code.
- If Matter pairing began in another ecosystem app, return to Home and use More Options.
- If a Thread accessory cannot connect, confirm that your hub is Thread-capable and that its model and connection configuration match Apple’s stated requirements.
