Set up Android Auto or Apple CarPlay while the vehicle is parked, then use supported voice controls for calls, directions, messages, and audio. Before connecting, check that your specific phone and vehicle support the platform and whether you want a wired or wireless connection; a USB port alone does not guarantee compatibility.

Check compatibility and choose a connection method

Support depends on the vehicle, trim or stereo, phone, region, and connection mode. Check the vehicle maker’s current compatibility information and your phone maker’s guidance before troubleshooting. Android Auto and CarPlay are not interchangeable: Android Auto connects an Android phone, while CarPlay connects an iPhone.

Connection What you need What to expect
Wired Android Auto A compatible Android phone and car, active data plan, and high-quality USB cable Connect to the vehicle’s supported USB port and follow the prompts. Google’s published baseline is Android 9.0 (Pie) or later.
Wireless Android Auto A compatible phone and car, active data plan, and 5 GHz Wi-Fi support Initial setup pairs the phone and car over Bluetooth; Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services need to be on during setup. Google lists Android 11 or later generally, with specified older Google and Samsung device exceptions; check its current requirements for the exact combination.
Wired Apple CarPlay An iPhone and vehicle with wired CarPlay support, plus a suitable cable Connect to the vehicle’s CarPlay-capable USB port. If the vehicle also supports wireless CarPlay, the first USB connection may offer wireless use on later trips.
Wireless Apple CarPlay An iPhone and vehicle with wireless CarPlay support Pair through the vehicle’s wireless or Bluetooth mode, then select the car in iPhone settings. Wi-Fi and Auto-Join for the CarPlay network must be enabled.

Wireless Android Auto requires more than a Bluetooth connection: compatible 5 GHz Wi-Fi support is also part of the requirement. Likewise, a cable cannot add either platform to a vehicle that does not support it.

Set up Android Auto

Android Auto is integrated into compatible Android phones and ordinarily does not require a separate download for use on the car display. Google’s baseline for wired projection is Android 9.0 (Pie) or later, active data service, a compatible car, and a high-quality USB cable. Wireless use has additional phone, vehicle, and 5 GHz Wi-Fi requirements, so confirm both ends support it before starting.

Connect by USB

  1. Park the vehicle, switch on the infotainment system, and make sure the phone has an active data connection.
  2. Connect the phone to the vehicle’s USB port intended for Android Auto. If you are not sure which port to use, check the vehicle manual; not every USB port supports phone projection.
  3. Follow the prompts on the phone and vehicle display. If the phone requests an update, complete it before continuing. If Android Auto does not start automatically, look for its option on the infotainment screen.

For model-specific port and setup instructions, follow the vehicle maker’s directions.

Pair wirelessly for the first time

  1. Confirm that both the phone and the specific vehicle or stereo support wireless Android Auto.
  2. With the vehicle parked and infotainment on, leave Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services enabled on the phone.
  3. Open the phone’s Bluetooth settings. Use the vehicle’s steering-wheel voice command button or the pairing menu described by its manufacturer, then select the vehicle and follow the prompts.
  4. Wait for Android Auto to start. Some systems require you to select Android Auto on the vehicle display after pairing.

Set up Apple CarPlay

Make sure the vehicle and region support CarPlay, and turn on Siri before connecting. The exact first-connection steps depend on whether the vehicle supports USB, wireless, or both.

Connect by USB

  1. Start the car and connect the iPhone to the vehicle’s CarPlay-capable USB port. A CarPlay or smartphone symbol may identify the port.
  2. Follow any prompts on the iPhone and vehicle display. If the vehicle supports wired and wireless CarPlay, the first USB connection may offer wireless CarPlay for future trips.
  3. If the CarPlay Home screen does not appear, select the CarPlay logo on the vehicle display.

Connect wirelessly

  1. Start the car and hold the steering-wheel voice command button to begin pairing.
  2. Make sure the stereo is in wireless or Bluetooth mode, and turn on Wi-Fi on the iPhone. Enable Auto-Join for the CarPlay network.
  3. On the iPhone, open Settings > General > CarPlay and select the vehicle.
  4. If CarPlay does not appear on its own, select the CarPlay logo on the vehicle display. Consult the vehicle manual for any model-specific pairing steps.

Use voice controls without handling the phone

Once connected, supported voice controls can help you make calls, request directions, send messages, and play audio. Availability depends on the vehicle, phone, feature settings, language, and territory; not every control or wake phrase works in every setup.

Android Auto

In compatible cars, start Gemini or Google Assistant by saying “Hey Google,” tapping the display microphone, or pressing and holding the steering-wheel voice command button. After the tone, make a request. Google says Gemini is replacing Assistant on most mobile devices and that transition details continue during 2026, so the available assistant can vary by device, language, and territory.

Troubleshoot a connection that will not start

Check compatibility first, especially when switching between wired and wireless use. Then work through the checks for the connection type rather than assuming every USB port or Bluetooth pairing supports projection.

Android Auto

  • Verify that the phone, vehicle or stereo, and selected wired or wireless mode are supported. Google notes that a car’s USB port does not necessarily support Android Auto; ask the vehicle maker about compatibility for the specific model.
  • For USB setup, try the intended data-capable port and a high-quality cable, then reconnect and follow any prompts on both screens.
  • For wireless setup, confirm Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services are enabled and repeat pairing using the vehicle maker’s instructions.
  • If the display offers Android Auto but does not launch automatically, select it there. Check the manual for any model-specific steps.

Apple CarPlay

  • Confirm that CarPlay is supported in your region and by the vehicle, that Siri is on, and that the iPhone is current.
  • For a wired connection, try another suitable cable or a different CarPlay-capable port.
  • For a wireless connection, make sure Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are on and Auto-Join is enabled for the CarPlay network.
  • Select the CarPlay logo on the vehicle display if the Home screen does not appear automatically.
  • If it still fails, restart the iPhone and car, check that CarPlay is not restricted in Screen Time, forget the car and pair again, and check for vehicle stereo firmware updates.

Set up before driving

Google Android Auto Help advises: “Make sure your car is in park (P) with the infotainment system turned on, and allow time to set up Android Auto before you start your drive.” It also says: “Drive safely. Pay attention to the road and driving conditions, and always obey applicable laws.” Hands-free features do not remove the need to keep attention on driving; complete pairing and resolve connection problems while parked.
