You can use an iPad mini alongside your iPhone without copying the iPhone’s entire contents. Set up the iPad manually, sign in with the same Apple Account, then enable only the iCloud services and Continuity features you want. Use Quick Start instead if you want to transfer data to a new iPad.
Choose between transferring data and setting up a companion
Quick Start is an option for setting up a new device and transferring information; it is not required to make an iPad mini work with an iPhone. Manual setup is often a better fit when you want a companion tablet with selected shared information rather than a copy of the phone.

Set up the iPad mini
- Prepare a connection and account details. Have Wi-Fi or another internet connection available, along with the Apple Account credentials used on your iPhone. Apple supports setup using another device or manual setup: Set up your iPhone or iPad.
- Choose the setup route. For a data transfer, keep the iPhone nearby, turn on its Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and follow the iPad’s Quick Start prompts. Choose an iCloud download or direct transfer when prompted. For a companion tablet that should start clean, choose manual setup and do not restore a full backup.
- Sign in with the same Apple Account. Use the account already signed in on the iPhone to access iCloud and supported Apple continuity services on the iPad. Apple describes shared-account sign-in as a starting point for Continuity: Apple Continuity.
- Select the iCloud services you want. On the iPad, open Settings, tap your name, then tap iCloud. Turn on the services whose supported information you want available on both devices. Apple’s iCloud guide explains how data is kept up to date across signed-in devices: Set up iCloud on all your devices.
Only supported data for enabled services is covered. Third-party apps determine whether and how their own information syncs, so signing in to the same Apple Account does not guarantee that every app or its data will appear on both devices.
Use Handoff and Universal Clipboard
Handoff
Handoff lets you continue supported activity in compatible apps on another device. Turn on Handoff on both the iPhone and iPad: open Settings, tap General, tap AirPlay & Continuity (or AirPlay & Handoff, depending on software version), then enable Handoff. Both devices need Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, the same Apple Account, and an app that supports the feature. See Apple’s Handoff guide and Continuity requirements.

Universal Clipboard
With both devices signed in to the same Apple Account and connected with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, copy text or another supported item on one device and paste it on the other. Handoff must also be enabled. Apple lists iPad mini 2 or later among the supported iPad models for Universal Clipboard; other Continuity features may have different hardware and operating-system requirements: Use Universal Clipboard to copy and paste between your Apple devices.
Relay iPhone calls to the iPad mini
To let the iPad handle eligible calls through the iPhone, first enable the setting on the phone:

- On the iPhone, open Settings > Apps > Phone > Calls on Other Devices.
- Turn on Allow Calls on Other Devices, then enable the iPad mini in the device list.
- Make sure both devices have Wi-Fi on and are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. They must use the same Apple Account, and the phone number must be enabled in FaceTime settings on both devices.
Apple’s instructions are at Make and receive phone calls on your iPad. Carrier support affects Wi-Fi Calling, and cellular charges may apply.

There is no single generation rule for all iPhone-and-iPad continuity features. Requirements depend on the specific feature, the iPad mini generation, and the software installed. Apple’s Continuity requirements page lists feature-specific compatibility; Universal Clipboard’s listed minimum is iPad mini 2, but that does not establish that every Continuity feature works on every mini generation.

- A service’s information is missing: Confirm both devices use the same Apple Account and that the relevant iCloud service is enabled on each. Check the app’s own sync behavior for third-party data.
- Handoff or clipboard sharing fails: Check Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, the shared Apple Account, and Handoff on both devices; for Handoff, also confirm the app supports it.
- Calls do not reach the iPad: Review Calls on Other Devices on the iPhone, same-network Wi-Fi, account sign-in, and FaceTime phone-number settings. Carrier support can affect Wi-Fi Calling.
- A setting label differs: Apple notes that setup labels can vary by software version and region. Use Settings search or consult the relevant Apple support page for the device’s current software.
