Set up an AI wearable for privacy by identifying its exact model, limiting companion-app permissions, separating local capture from cloud features, reviewing voice and sharing controls, and learning what its indicators actually mean. The clearest documented example is Meta’s Ray-Ban AI glasses, but menus and data flows vary by generation, region and app version. Use the steps below as a privacy checklist, then confirm every label in your wearable’s current official guide. No setting makes an always-available camera, microphone or cloud-connected assistant completely private; your choices, bystander consent and the locations where you use it remain part of the protection.

What should I do before pairing an AI wearable?

Write down the product name, generation or model code, sales region and companion-app version before tapping through setup. Manufacturers can change menu labels and controls between generations, and a setting documented for one model may not exist on another.

  • Find the official setup and privacy guide for the exact model.
  • Update the companion app and wearable firmware before making final privacy decisions.
  • Decide which functions you actually need: gallery photos, video, livestreaming, voice assistant, wake word, notifications, camera-based questions and optional cloud processing.
  • Plan where the wearable will not be used, such as changing rooms, medical consultations, private homes or other places where people reasonably expect privacy.

The instructions below use Meta’s AI glasses as the concrete example because its official documentation describes the controls in detail. Meta’s first-party statements describe its own systems; they are not an independent privacy audit. Other AI wearables can use different storage, processing and deletion paths.

How do I pair the wearable without granting unnecessary access?

Pair the device through its official companion app, but treat each permission request as optional until you understand the feature it enables.

  1. Install the official app and sign in. Verify the publisher and region, then install available app and glasses updates.
  2. Read each permission screen. Allow Bluetooth or local-network access needed for pairing, and enable photos, microphone, contacts, location or notifications only when a function you intend to use requires it.
  3. Decline optional contact syncing. Voice calling and messaging may work without uploading your entire address book, depending on the model and phone operating system.
  4. Finish pairing, then reopen privacy settings. Updates can add controls or move them to a different menu, so do not assume the choices shown during first launch are the complete set.

For Meta glasses, Meta says its Meta AI app provides preferences for captures, voice, notifications and information shared with Meta. Inspect each category rather than accepting a single broad “continue” choice. See Meta’s responsible-innovation guidance for its explanation of these controls.

Use a permission-by-permission audit

Permission Why an app may request it Privacy-first choice
Bluetooth or nearby devices Pairing, syncing and firmware updates Allow for the official app, then remove access if you permanently retire the wearable.
Photos and media Importing captures to the phone Allow only if you plan to import; review the phone’s photo-library scope.
Microphone Voice commands, calls and audio capture Allow for features you need; disable at the phone level when the wearable is not in use if practical.
Contacts Calling or messaging people from the wearable Decline if you do not need hands-free contacts; do not assume it is required for basic camera use.
Location Location-tagged media, nearby services or device features Choose “while using” or the narrowest available option when the function supports it.
Notifications Spoken or visual alerts and incoming calls Turn off lock-screen previews and spoken alerts that could expose private content.

After pairing, open the phone’s operating-system permission page as well as the wearable app. A permission denied during setup can later be silently re-enabled by a phone migration or an app update, so include both screens in your audit.

Which privacy controls should I check in the companion app?

Open every privacy or AI-data section and record the current state of the controls. Keep a feature on only when its benefit is worth the additional capture, transmission or notification it creates.

Capture and gallery settings

Check whether photos and videos are saved to the wearable’s gallery, automatically imported to your phone, or uploaded for another service. Meta says photos and videos captured for the glasses gallery remain on the glasses until you choose to import them to a phone. Local storage therefore limits automatic phone transfer, but it does not mean that every AI interaction stays local.

Voice, wake word and assistant settings

Review the wake-word switch, push-to-talk behavior, voice responses and voice activity history. Turning off the wake word reduces accidental activation; turning off voice features is a separate decision from deleting recordings already retained in activity history. If the app offers a choice between short voice responses and full spoken answers, select the mode that reveals less around other people.

Notifications and spoken responses

Disable lock-screen previews or spoken notifications if other people could hear or see them. Set a shorter notification history where the operating system offers one, and use headphones or a phone screen for sensitive responses. Test a notification with a harmless message so you know whether the glasses, phone, both, or neither will announce it.

Information-sharing preferences

Inspect settings describing information shared with the manufacturer or used to improve services. Choose the least permissive option that still supports your intended functions, and revisit it after a major app update. A control about service improvement is distinct from a control about importing your own gallery, so do not assume one switch governs both.

What is the difference between local capture, phone import, AI questions and cloud media processing?

These are separate paths. Treating them as one “camera upload” setting is a common privacy mistake.

Path What the official material says Privacy decision
Gallery capture Meta says photos and videos captured for the glasses gallery stay on the glasses until you choose to import them to a phone. Leave automatic import off if you want to review files before they reach the phone.
Phone import Import is a user-initiated transfer from the glasses to the paired phone. Review the phone’s photo-backup and sharing apps after importing.
AI question using the camera Meta’s FAQ distinguishes gallery capture from camera use for certain AI prompts; the prompt can follow a different processing path. Check the model-specific explanation before assuming a question is local or saved in the gallery.
Optional cloud media processing The Ray-Ban FAQ says enabled cloud media processing temporarily stores media in the cloud for 30 days, then it auto-expires; switching the setting off removes media from cloud processing. Keep this option off unless the feature is necessary, and do not treat 30 days as a universal retention period for all wearable data.

Cloud processing, phone import and asking an AI question are not interchangeable. Meta’s AI glasses FAQ, published July 7, 2026, and the Ray-Ban Meta FAQ describe these behaviors for their products; another manufacturer may retain or transmit data differently.

Trace one file end to end

For a practical check, make one non-sensitive test photo. Note whether it appears in the glasses gallery, when you import it, whether it enters the phone’s camera roll, and whether the phone backs it up automatically. Delete the test from each location you do not want to retain. Then ask a harmless camera-based AI question and check the app’s activity view separately. This exercise demonstrates that a gallery file, an imported copy and an AI interaction can have different records.

Can I delete voice recordings and review activity?

Yes, Meta’s official FAQ says users can delete voice recordings. Find voice activity or history in the companion app, review entries you do not recognize, and use the available delete control. The exact path can change with app version and region, so follow the current in-app wording.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Deletion and prevention are different controls. Disabling the wake word or voice assistant limits future triggers, while deleting history addresses recordings already listed in the account activity view. The published guidance does not promise that deleting a recording reverses every downstream use or changes a model that may already have been trained; do not infer that result from a delete button.

If the wearable has a hardware wake button or push-to-talk gesture, prefer it for sensitive conversations and disable hands-free activation when you do not need it. Confirm the microphone state using the model’s documentation rather than relying on a phone status icon. Review activity after a week of normal use: unexpected entries can reveal that a wake word is too easy to trigger in your environment.

What do the camera and privacy indicators actually mean?

Learn the indicator behavior for your exact generation before wearing the device around other people. An LED is a useful signal, not a substitute for consent and not proof that no camera-based AI processing is occurring.

  • Meta says the capture LED signals photo or video capture for the gallery or streaming.
  • On newer supported Meta glasses, blocking or tampering with the LED disables the camera. Never cover, remove or interfere with the indicator.
  • Meta’s FAQ distinguishes gallery capture from camera use for certain AI prompts, so not every camera interaction should be assumed to have identical indicator behavior.
  • Oakley’s official FAQ also describes different behavior for gallery capture and camera-based AI use and notes differences between older and newer models.

Read the indicator section of your model’s guide and demonstrate it to anyone who may be recorded. If a person objects, stop capture immediately; do not argue that an illuminated light makes the recording acceptable. Check whether your model has audio cues, a shutter sound or an on-screen status in addition to the LED, and learn how to stop an active stream rather than merely closing the app.

How should I protect bystanders and use the wearable responsibly?

Make consent a routine, just like checking the battery. Meta’s guidance states, “It’s important to respect the comfort and privacy of other people when using AI glasses.”

  1. Ask before recording identifiable people. Explain whether you are taking a still photo, recording video, livestreaming or asking an AI question about what the camera sees.
  2. Honor a refusal. Stop capture and put the wearable in its non-capture state when someone objects.
  3. Avoid sensitive locations. Do not use camera or voice features in bathrooms, locker rooms, clinical encounters, confidential meetings or workplaces that prohibit recording.
  4. Check the frame. Before saving or sharing, look for children, documents, screens, addresses, badges and bystanders who did not consent.
  5. Review before sharing. Import to the phone only when ready, then check the recipient list and the phone’s automatic cloud-photo sharing settings.

Meta answers the question of who can see gallery photos and videos with: “You, and only you — unless you choose to share them.” That is Meta’s description of its gallery behavior, not a blanket guarantee for every AI request, cloud option, backup service or wearable. Workplace policies, local recording laws and school or venue rules can impose stricter requirements than the device settings.

Which privacy setup is right for my use?

Choose controls by function rather than by an all-or-nothing “private mode.”

Use case Conservative setup Trade-off
Occasional hands-free photos Gallery capture on; automatic import and optional cloud media processing off; wake word off. You must use a deliberate gesture or button and manually import selected files.
Frequent voice assistance Voice on; wake word on only in appropriate places; review and delete activity regularly; notifications limited. More convenience, with greater risk of accidental activation and retained voice history.
Livestreaming Enable streaming only for the session, confirm the capture indicator, and tell people nearby. Streaming exposes live surroundings and bystanders; disabling it later does not undo an audience’s copies.
Camera-based AI questions Use only where recording is allowed; confirm the model’s indicator and processing explanation; avoid documents and screens. The answer may require a processing path different from ordinary gallery capture.

For children, patients, clients or confidential work, use the most restrictive profile: no hands-free activation, no optional cloud processing, no automatic import and no use in prohibited locations. If the wearable cannot provide that combination, leave it off for that activity rather than assuming a partial setting is sufficient.

How do I verify that the settings stayed private after an update?

Repeat a short audit after every app or firmware update, phone migration or account change.

  • Open capture, voice, notification and information-sharing preferences and compare them with your chosen baseline.
  • Check whether cloud media processing or automatic import was re-enabled.
  • Look at voice activity and gallery contents for unexpected entries.
  • Test the capture indicator with a harmless subject, then confirm the file appears only where expected.
  • Review phone-level permissions, photo-backup services and the app’s signed-in accounts.
  • Confirm that an old phone, tablet or family account is no longer paired or receiving imports.

Keep a private note of the menu names and your preferred values. If a control disappears, consult the current manufacturer guide instead of assuming the function was removed or disabled. Take screenshots of your chosen settings if the app allows it, but store those screenshots securely because they can reveal account or device details.

What should I do before selling, lending or handing off the wearable?

Use the official model-specific reset and unpairing procedure, not merely a Bluetooth disconnect. The Ray-Ban support FAQ warns that a factory reset deletes captures stored on the glasses and requires unpairing and pairing again.

  1. Import or securely preserve any local captures you intentionally want to keep.
  2. Delete voice activity and other account history available in the companion app.
  3. Sign out of the app if the manufacturer provides a sign-out option.
  4. Unpair the wearable from the phone and remove it from the account.
  5. Run the documented factory reset, then verify that it no longer appears as a trusted device.
  6. Check the phone separately: imported photos, backups, messages and shared albums are not automatically erased just because the glasses were reset.

Use reset as a hand-off or troubleshooting measure, not as a daily privacy toggle. Because reset erases local captures, perform it only after checking what remains on the device. A replacement charging case or other accessory must match the exact model code; an accessory does not change the wearable’s data practices.

What are the most common privacy mistakes?

  • Assuming local storage means no data leaves the device. AI prompts and optional cloud processing can follow separate paths.
  • Covering the LED. On supported newer models this can disable the camera and may damage the device; it also undermines the consent signal.
  • Confusing deletion with prevention. Remove existing voice history and separately disable wake-word or voice features.
  • Relying on a generic guide. Generation, region and app version can change menu names and indicator behavior.
  • Ignoring the phone. Imported files may enter photo backups, messaging apps or shared albums.
  • Recording first and asking later. Consent should happen before capture, especially in sensitive settings.
  • Leaving a stream running. End livestreaming in the app and verify the indicator has stopped before entering a private place.
  • Resetting without a backup check. A factory reset can erase the only copy of a capture on the glasses while leaving imported copies elsewhere.

Where can I confirm the current controls?

Use the manufacturer’s current documentation for your model and region:

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use AI glasses without connecting them to a cloud account?

That depends on the model. The documented Meta setup includes a companion app and account-based features, while the available guidance does not establish a fully offline operating mode; check your model’s requirements before buying or pairing.

How can I control my privacy on AI glasses?

Start in the companion app. Review capture, voice and wake-word, notification, information-sharing and optional cloud-media controls, then verify phone permissions and repeat the audit after updates.

Can I delete my voice recordings with Meta AI?

Meta says users can delete voice recordings from the available activity controls. Deleting listed recordings is separate from turning off the wake word, and the guidance does not promise that deletion reverses every downstream use.

Who can see the photos and videos I take on my glasses?

Meta says gallery photos and videos are visible to “You, and only you — unless you choose to share them.” Imported copies, backups, livestream audiences and other AI-processing paths can have different access.

Does Ray-Ban’s 30-day period apply to all wearable data?

No. Ray-Ban describes 30-day temporary storage for enabled cloud media processing, with automatic expiry. That statement is not a universal retention period for voice history, gallery files, phone backups or every AI wearable.

Does deleting a voice recording erase copies already saved on my phone?

No such automatic effect is established in the cited guidance. Check your phone’s recordings, backups and app storage separately after deleting activity in the wearable’s account.

Will a factory reset remove photos I already imported?

The Ray-Ban support guidance says reset deletes captures on the glasses. It does not say that imported phone copies are erased, so review the phone gallery, backups and shared albums yourself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can an AI wearable record someone even when the LED is off?

Indicator behavior differs by model and function. Official Meta and Oakley material distinguishes ordinary gallery capture from some camera-based AI uses, so consult the exact generation’s guide rather than inferring camera state from a single light.

Is covering the capture light a privacy solution?

No. Meta says blocking or tampering with the LED on newer supported glasses disables the camera. Never cover or modify the indicator; use the documented control to stop capture and obtain consent.

What should I do if someone objects while I am wearing the glasses?

Stop capture immediately, end any stream, and move to a non-capture state. An illuminated indicator does not replace consent, and you should avoid locations where recording is prohibited.

The Bottom Line

Privacy-first setup means using the narrowest permissions and features you need, keeping optional cloud media processing and automatic import off unless necessary, reviewing voice activity, learning your model’s indicator behavior, and asking before capturing anyone. Recheck the controls after updates and use the official reset procedure before handoff.
