For a straightforward local setup, use Home Assistant’s built-in Ecowitt integration: add it in Home Assistant, then configure your station gateway to push readings to the callback address it provides. This requires a supported Ecowitt gateway and sensors, plus an HTTP endpoint the gateway can reach. For a Tempest-compatible WeatherFlow station, Home Assistant also offers a separate local integration that reads UDP broadcasts.
Choose the connection that fits your weather station
Home Assistant supports several ways to bring weather-station data into your home. The main distinction is where readings travel and what hardware or network setup is required.
| Option | How data reaches Home Assistant | Prerequisite | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ecowitt integration | The gateway pushes readings to a Home Assistant callback over the local network. | Supported Ecowitt gateway and sensors; a reachable HTTP endpoint. | New setups or existing Ecowitt hardware. |
| WeatherFlow integration | Home Assistant reads local UDP broadcasts from the station. | Tempest-compatible station; station and Home Assistant on the same subnet. | Existing or planned WeatherFlow Tempest setups. |
| Ambient Weather integration | Data is retrieved through Ambient Weather Cloud. | An Application Key and API Key from the Ambient Weather dashboard. | Ambient Weather users who are comfortable with cloud delivery. |
| Ambient Weather local alternative | ecowitt2mqtt in Ambient Weather mode, with MQTT Discovery support. | An MQTT-based setup and configuration specific to the project. | Ambient Weather users seeking a local route and willing to use MQTT. |
For Ecowitt, Home Assistant lists the GW1200, GW2000, and GW3000 gateways, and sensor examples including the WH51 soil-moisture sensor, WH40 self-emptying rain gauge, WH57 outdoor lightning detector, and WS90 7-in-1 sensor. The entities you get depend on which compatible sensors are connected. See the Home Assistant Ecowitt integration documentation for the current supported-device list.
Prepare the Ecowitt gateway and sensors
Before adding the integration, make sure the sensors work with the station and the gateway is connected to the same reachable home network as Home Assistant, using Wi-Fi or Ethernet. The gateway needs network access to the Home Assistant receiver; the sensors alone do not send data to Home Assistant.

You can configure the gateway network through the Ecowitt app, which requires an Ecowitt account, or through its embedded web interface. For the latter, connect to the device’s Wi-Fi hotspot and open http://192.168.4.1 in a browser; Home Assistant’s instructions say this method does not require an account.
Add the Ecowitt integration and set the station upload
- In Home Assistant, open Settings > Devices & services > Add Integration, search for Ecowitt, and follow the prompts.
- Note the server IP address or host name, path, and port displayed by the integration. These form the callback endpoint that the gateway must contact.
- In the Ecowitt mobile app, open the device’s DIY Upload Servers, choose Customized, select Ecowitt as the protocol type, and enter the displayed host, path, and port. The app prepends a slash to the path, so remove the first slash when entering the path there.
- Alternatively, in the station’s web interface, open Weather Services > Customized, enable the customized service, choose the Ecowitt protocol, and enter the endpoint values.
- Save the station configuration. Check Home Assistant for the device and entities generated from the sensors attached to your station.
The path must match the one Home Assistant displays. If readings do not arrive, check that the host, port, and path are entered correctly and that the gateway can reach the receiver over the network.

Make an HTTP endpoint reachable
The Ecowitt upload uses HTTP, not HTTPS: Home Assistant states, “Ecowitt devices do not support TLS/SSL connections (HTTPS).” An instance available only through an HTTPS endpoint cannot receive the documented station upload. If Home Assistant is behind a reverse proxy or normally accessed over TLS, provide a reachable HTTP route for the station as well. The weather-station upload itself is not encrypted in transit, so account for that when deciding which network can reach the endpoint and how it is exposed. See Home Assistant’s Ecowitt integration instructions.
Use WeatherFlow for a Tempest-compatible station
WeatherFlow has a distinct Home Assistant integration that reads directly from Tempest-compatible stations using UDP. It requires the station and Home Assistant server to be on the same subnet, so it is not the same push-to-callback setup as Ecowitt. The integration reads local device data; WeatherFlow’s app may show different values because it also considers forecasts and neighboring stations. Do not expect the app and Home Assistant entities to match exactly. See the Home Assistant WeatherFlow integration documentation.

Understand Ambient Weather’s cloud and local options
Home Assistant’s named Ambient Weather integration retrieves data through Ambient Weather Cloud and requires an Application Key and API Key from the provider’s dashboard. That is a cloud-dependent route, not a local station-to-Home-Assistant connection. Home Assistant identifies ecowitt2mqtt in Ambient Weather mode as a local alternative for users who want an MQTT-based route. That option involves an additional component and its own project-specific setup. Details are in the Home Assistant Ambient Weather integration documentation.

A supported gateway such as the Ecowitt GW2000 is only one part of a working weather station. Before buying, check that the package includes the sensors you need and that those sensors are compatible with Home Assistant’s Ecowitt integration. The supported list can change, so verify the current devices in Home Assistant’s documentation before purchasing.
