To protect a 24/7 YouTube radio stream from silence, add a fallback audio source that OBS can play, then decide how you will switch to it. A backup audio source handles a failed program feed while OBS is still connected. A YouTube backup ingestion URL handles a different problem: a failed encoder-to-YouTube connection. Neither automatically replaces the other.
Choose which failure you need to cover
Start by identifying what could fail. If your radio program feed or audio device might go silent while OBS remains connected, prepare an alternate source inside OBS. If the encoder or its path to YouTube might disconnect, consider ingestion redundancy as a separate measure.
| Approach | What it covers | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Alternate audio source in OBS | The main program audio goes silent or its audio device fails while the encoder continues. | How switching happens, whether the alternate source is available, its level, and whether you have rights to use its content. |
| YouTube backup ingestion path | The primary encoder connection or ingestion path fails. | The documented backup URL applies to HLS ingestion; HLS adds latency compared with RTMP. Match stream settings and watch YouTube’s health messages. |
You can use both approaches, but they protect different parts of the chain. A backup ingestion path does not, by itself, detect silent audio in an otherwise connected stream.
Set up an alternate audio source in OBS
1. Choose the fallback audio
Use a second audio input device, or add a local audio file as a Media Source. OBS Media Source supports MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV files and includes a Loop option. A looped file can provide continuity, but it does not recreate the live program. Choose suitable fallback material, such as a station ident or playlist, and make sure your rights cover using it in the stream.

2. Add and configure the source
- In OBS, open the scene used for the stream and add an audio input capture source for a second device, or add a Media Source and select the audio file.
- If you use a Media Source, enable Loop in its properties if you want the file to repeat.
- Set the source’s volume to an appropriate level in the Audio Mixer. A source being present in a scene does not mean OBS will automatically switch to it if the main feed fails.
OBS documents device and media sources, but the reviewed source and mixer documentation does not establish built-in automatic silence detection and switching. Choose an operator action or separately verified automation; do not assume unattended failover without confirming the mechanism.
3. Check the audio signal
Watch the OBS Audio Mixer meters while the alternate source plays, and use audio monitoring through headphones or another monitoring output to confirm what OBS is receiving. OBS cautions that selecting a device globally and also capturing it as a scene source can create echo. If you use a scene-specific capture for that device, disable the duplicate global device selection. See the OBS Audio Sources and Audio Mixer Guide documentation.

4. Test the switch before relying on it
- Make a recording or run a test stream.
- Simulate the failure you want to cover, such as stopping the primary feed or disconnecting its device.
- Switch to the fallback using the planned operator action or automation.
- Confirm the fallback is audible at the intended level in the recorded or streamed output.
This test is important because a meter moving on the fallback source does not prove that your switching method will activate it when the primary feed fails.
Configure YouTube ingestion redundancy separately
YouTube’s documented backup-server procedure is for HLS ingestion, not a general-purpose backup audio source. In YouTube Help’s Set up an HLS stream documentation, YouTube says: “If you need a backup ingestion, copy the ‘Backup server URL.’” Select HLS in Live Control Room, copy the backup server URL, and configure an HLS-capable encoder for the backup path. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP, so account for that trade-off.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.

Match primary and backup stream settings
YouTube warns that primary and backup streams must use matching settings for failover to work properly. Check the parameters listed in YouTube’s Live streaming error messages documentation:
- Resolution
- Video and audio codecs
- Frame rate
- Bitrate
- Keyframe frequency
- Audio sample rate
- Audio channels
Monitor the Live Control Room health indicator for configuration errors. YouTube’s HLS guidance lists AAC, AC3, and EAC3 as audio codecs. Its advanced HLS recommendations include a 44.1 kHz stereo or 48 kHz 5.1 audio sample rate, and 128 Kbps for stereo audio. These values are HLS-specific guidance, not universal RTMP recommendations.

Troubleshoot a silent or interrupted fallback
The fallback source appears in OBS but produces no sound
- Check that the source is enabled and that its Audio Mixer meter moves during playback.
- For a file source, confirm the selected file is supported and that playback is active. Enable Loop if it must repeat.
- For a device source, confirm OBS is using the intended input and that the device is available.
You hear an echo or duplicate audio
If the same device is selected both as a global audio device and as a scene-specific capture, OBS may capture it twice. Disable the duplicate global selection and check the mixer and monitoring output again.
The audio stays silent after the main feed fails
A fallback source does not switch itself merely because it exists in the scene. Confirm that the operator action or separately verified automation is actually triggering, and test the failure path in a recording or test stream before depending on it.

YouTube reports a backup-stream configuration error
Compare the primary and backup paths across resolution, codecs, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe frequency, audio sample rate, and channel count. Use Live Control Room’s health indicator to identify errors, and make sure the encoder is configured for the HLS backup URL if using YouTube’s documented HLS method.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want uploaded audio or video to keep a YouTube channel live without leaving an encoder computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud service from Yorker Media. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded content in the cloud; it does not broadcast from a live camera. This is an alternative to keeping a stream online, not a substitute for configuring an OBS audio fallback when your live radio feed must continue.
- Nothing has to stay powered on at home for the cloud stream to continue.
- Uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot without re-encoding or quality tiers.
- StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
