Windows can send sound to several places at once: built-in speakers, a USB headset, an HDMI monitor, Bluetooth headphones, or a separate sound card. In Windows 11, the quickest way to choose the default playback device is Settings > System > Sound. Windows 10 uses a similar Sound page, while the classic Sound Control Panel remains available in both versions.
Be aware that an app can override the system choice. If changing the default device does not affect a game, browser, meeting app, or media player, check that app in Volume mixer.
Set the default output device in Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Output, select the speakers, headphones, USB audio device, HDMI device, monitor, or Bluetooth device you want to use.
Selecting a device under Output makes it the default playback device. You do not have to open Control Panel or click Set as Default Device for this basic Windows 11 method.
For a faster switch, select the network, volume, or battery area on the taskbar to open Quick Settings, then select the arrow beside the volume slider. Choose an available output device from the list.

Set the default input device in Windows 11
To choose the microphone Windows should use for calls, recordings, and voice input:
- Go to Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- Scroll to Input.
- Under Choose a device for speaking or recording, select the microphone or headset.
The selected microphone becomes the default input device. This is separate from the playback choice: you can, for example, send sound to USB headphones while using a laptop’s built-in microphone.
Test the selected microphone
- On the microphone’s properties page, find Microphone test.
- Select Start test and speak normally.
- Select Stop test.
- Select Play under Recorded sample to hear the result.
If the test works but a particular app cannot hear you, check that app’s microphone permission and its own input setting.
Use the classic Sound Control Panel
The older interface is useful when Windows has several devices with similar names, or when you need to mark a device as the default communications device.
- Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- Select More sound settings. In Windows 10, you may see a link to the classic Sound control panel directly in the Sound settings page.
- Open the Playback tab for speakers and headphones.
- Select the device you want to use.
- Select Set Default.
- Choose OK.
For microphones, open the Recording tab instead. The tab names matter: Playback is for output devices, and Recording is for input devices.

Set the default audio device in Windows 10
Windows 10’s Settings route is:
- Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Output, open the device list and choose the speakers or headphones you want.
- For a microphone, use the Input section and choose the device.
If the option is missing or you want the traditional controls, open the classic Sound dialog and use Playback > Set Default, or Recording > Set Default for a microphone.
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. The audio controls can still be used, but Windows 10 may show older labels than Windows 11.
When one app still uses the wrong device
A system-wide default does not always control every app. Windows 11’s per-app mixer can assign a separate output device and volume.
- Open Start > Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer.
- Under Apps, find the affected app.
- Check its Output device and change it to Default or to the specific speakers or headset you want.
- Make sure the app’s volume slider is raised and that it is not muted.
Close and reopen the app if it does not immediately follow the new assignment. Some games and communications apps also have their own audio-device selector inside their settings.
Fix a selected device that produces no sound
Check USB, HDMI, and monitor selections
USB and HDMI devices often appear as separate output choices. An HDMI monitor may be selected even though the monitor has no built-in speakers. In that case, Windows is sending audio successfully—but to hardware that cannot play it.

- Open Start, type Device Manager, and open it.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- If the audio device is listed, right-click it and select Enable device if that option is available.
- If it is not listed, select View > Show hidden devices.
- Then select Action > Scan for hardware changes.
If the device remains absent, right-click the listed audio device and choose Update driver, then restart the PC. For a missing or incompatible driver, download the latest Windows-compatible version from the computer or sound-card manufacturer.
Restart Windows audio services
This can restore audio when Windows detects the hardware but applications cannot use it.
- Select Start, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - Right-click Windows Audio and select Restart.
- Repeat the process for Windows Audio Endpoint Builder.
Test the selected playback or recording device again after both services restart.

The app may have its own assignment in Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer. Find the app under Apps and change its Output device.
Which Sound Control Panel tab is used for headphones?
Use the Playback tab for headphones, speakers, USB audio devices, HDMI audio, and other outputs. Use Recording for microphones.

The Bottom Line
For most Windows 11 and Windows 10 systems, select the required device under Settings > System > Sound. Use More sound settings > Playback or Recording when you need the classic Set Default command.
