Use two layers of control: the chatbot’s own family settings and the operating system’s parental controls. Link a parent and teen account in ChatGPT to manage the settings and schedules that OpenAI exposes, then enforce app limits and quiet hours with Apple Screen Time or Google Family Link. Family Link can separately turn Gemini access on or off, while Microsoft Family Safety or device settings can block Copilot and restrict features such as image generation, voice mode and group chat. This combination limits when and where a child can use AI without making routine access to private conversations the default. Explain any monitoring, keep permissions tight, and teach verification because current AI filters and answers are imperfect.
Why should I use both chatbot controls and device controls?
They govern different parts of the experience. An account-level setting travels with the child’s chatbot account, while a device-level setting controls the app, browser or category on a particular phone, tablet or computer. Using only one layer leaves an obvious gap: a child could switch to another device, use a web browser instead of the app, or open a different chatbot.
- Chatbot controls: manage options exposed by that service, such as linked-parent settings, schedules or access to a particular AI product.
- Device controls: enforce daily allowances, downtime or school hours, app and website restrictions, and content or privacy limits across the device.
- Family rules: cover behavior that software cannot reliably judge, including when to ask permission, where devices may be used and how to check an answer.
Set the account controls first, then add operating-system limits. If a child uses more than one platform, repeat the device setup on each one and review the rules after a new app or account is added.
What can ChatGPT parental controls show or change?
OpenAI’s parental-controls feature lets a parent link their account with a teen’s account from Settings → Parental controls. After linking, parents can manage the selected settings and schedules that OpenAI makes available for the account. The link is not a surveillance feed: OpenAI states that it does not give a parent or guardian access to the teen’s conversations, chat history or real-time activity.

Set up the account link
- Open ChatGPT on the parent account and go to Settings.
- Select Parental controls and choose the option to link a teen account.
- Complete the invitation or confirmation flow on the teen’s account.
- Review every setting and schedule that appears after the link is accepted. Availability can depend on the account, product version and region, so do not assume that a control shown in one account will appear in another.
Because the link does not expose chat content or live activity, pair it with Screen Time or Family Link if you need an enforceable time allowance. Explain this boundary to the child: the parent can change defined safety settings, but the arrangement is not a promise that every message will be read.
How do I limit an AI chatbot on an iPhone or iPad?
Apple Screen Time can apply a daily allowance, a recurring schedule, app and website restrictions, and content or privacy limits. The controls are managed through Family Sharing, so the family organizer can configure the child’s device from their own Apple account.
Configure Screen Time through Family Sharing
- On the organizer’s Apple device, open Settings and enter Family Sharing.
- Select the child’s name, then open Screen Time.
- Turn on Screen Time if it is not already active and create a Screen Time passcode that the child does not know.
- Open App Limits to set a daily allowance for the chatbot app. If the service is used in a browser, include the relevant website or browser category where Apple presents that option.
- Use Downtime to create quiet or school hours. Choose whether essential communication apps remain available during that period.
- Review Content & Privacy Restrictions. Restrict app installations, purchases, age-rated content, account changes, microphone or camera access and other permissions that are not needed for the child’s use case.
- Check the Screen Time report after the first few days. If the child is reaching the limit through a second app or browser, add that route rather than simply lowering the original allowance.
Choose limits that match the way the child uses AI
- Homework support: allow access during a defined study window and keep the app unavailable overnight.
- Creative or recreational use: use a shorter daily app limit and a broader Downtime schedule.
- Browser-based use: restrict the chatbot website as well as the app; otherwise the child may bypass an app-only limit.
Apple’s controls limit access to the device or app; they do not evaluate whether an AI answer is correct or appropriate. Keep the child’s account signed in only on devices covered by Family Sharing, and revisit the list after operating-system updates or a switch to a new device.
How do I limit an AI chatbot on Android or ChromeOS?
Google Family Link provides daily device limits, per-app limits, School Time or Downtime schedules, and the ability to block apps. It can supervise Android phones and tablets and supported ChromeOS devices, making it the main device-level layer for families using those platforms.
Apply a daily limit and quiet hours
- Open the parent version of Family Link and select the child.
- Open the controls for the child’s device and set a daily limit. Decide whether the allowance applies to the whole device or whether an individual chatbot should receive its own per-app limit.
- Configure School Time or Downtime for classes, bedtime and other periods when entertainment or social apps should be unavailable.
- Use the app-management screen to block a chatbot, allow it only for a defined purpose, or adjust its individual limit.
- Review the child’s device and app activity reports. These show settings and usage information available to the parent account; they are not a substitute for reading every conversation.
Prevent common bypasses
- Apply the rule to both the installed app and the web route if the service can be opened in Chrome.
- Require approval for new app installations so a second chatbot cannot be added without your knowledge.
- Check which Google account is signed in on each supervised device. A different account can fall outside the family group.
- Keep Family Link and the device operating system updated so schedules and app blocks continue to apply.
Family Link controls the device and app access. It cannot guarantee that an AI response is safe, factual or age-appropriate, so combine the technical limit with guidance and periodic conversations.
How do I turn Gemini access on or off for a supervised child?
Gemini access for a supervised child is managed in Family Link rather than in a general Screen Time allowance. Google’s documented path is Family Link → select the child → Controls → Gemini → Gemini Apps, where you can switch access on or off.

- Open Family Link and select the child’s profile.
- Tap Controls, then Gemini, and open Gemini Apps.
- Switch Gemini access on or off according to the family rule.
- If access is on, use Family Link’s device and schedule controls to decide when the child’s supervised device can be used.
- Explain the decision and the conditions for changing it, such as using Gemini only in a shared room or for a defined school task.
Google warns that its filters try to limit inappropriate content but are not perfect, and it recommends active guidance. Treat the toggle as an access control, not as a guarantee that every generated response is suitable. When the child can reach Gemini through a browser or another unsupervised account, the on/off setting alone will not cover that route.
How can I block or restrict Microsoft Copilot?
Microsoft says a parent or guardian may be able to manage Copilot through Microsoft Family Safety or the device’s own settings. Depending on the device and account, those controls can block Copilot, restrict the hours when it is available, and limit image generation, voice mode or group chat.
Set the broad access rule
- Open Microsoft Family Safety for the child, or the parental-control settings on the child’s device.
- Locate Copilot in the app, web or connected-service list.
- Choose whether to block it completely or allow it only during defined hours.
- If feature-level controls are offered, review image generation, voice mode and group-chat access separately. A child may need text assistance for school while not needing the other modes.
- Test the rule on every device where the child can sign in, including a browser and any shared Windows computer.
Microsoft’s wording is deliberately conditional because available controls vary by device, account and configuration. If Copilot does not appear in Family Safety, use the device’s app, web and account restrictions and verify that the child is using the supervised Microsoft account.
Which control should I use for each goal?
The table below separates what each layer can enforce from what it can reveal. “Conversation access” means routine ability to read chats; none of the controls below should be assumed to provide that unless the service explicitly says so.

Use the chatbot-specific setting when you need to turn one service on or off, and the device setting when you need a schedule that applies regardless of which AI app the child opens. If a control is not available in your account or region, document the rule and enforce the closest device-level equivalent.
How should parents set family rules for AI chatbot use?
Software limits work best when the child knows what the limit is for and how to ask for an exception. Write the rules in plain language and keep them short enough to review together.

Set a daily allowance and quiet periods
Choose a daily amount that fits the child’s age, school demands and other screen use. Add a school-hours or bedtime schedule rather than relying on a warning after the allowance is gone. Decide in advance whether homework time is an exception and how the child requests extra time.
Require permission for new AI apps and accounts
Make installation and account creation a permission event. Check whether a new service requests microphone, camera, contacts, location or photo-library access; deny permissions that are not necessary for the stated use.
Use shared spaces for younger children
For younger users, keep chatbot sessions in a shared room and use a family-owned device when practical. This provides context and support without requiring a parent to read every line of a conversation.

- Ask the child to verify important medical, legal, financial or school claims with a trusted human or primary source.
- Explain that a fluent answer can still be wrong, outdated or invented.
- Tell the child never to paste passwords, identity documents, private family details or another person’s confidential information into a chatbot.
- Show how to stop a conversation and report content that is frightening, sexual, hateful or otherwise unsafe.
Regulators have warned that many AI tools lack child-specific safeguards. Active guidance is therefore part of the control system, not an optional extra.
Can I supervise AI use without reading every conversation?
Yes, but only by accepting a deliberate trade-off between oversight and privacy. Account links, app limits, schedules, permission reviews and safety alerts can show whether a child is using a service and whether rules are being followed without making message content routinely visible. ChatGPT’s linked-parent arrangement explicitly does not provide access to chats, chat history or real-time activity.
Tell the child what is monitored
The Information Commissioner’s Office advises that children should be informed when monitoring is used and that controls should respect their privacy rights. Explain which information you can see, which you cannot, why a limit exists and when you might need to inspect content—for example, after a credible safety concern.

Use a graduated response
- Start with the least intrusive measure that addresses the problem: a schedule, an app limit or a permission change.
- Discuss repeated bypasses or unsafe behavior and adjust the rule together.
- Escalate to a more restrictive block or direct review only when the risk justifies it, documenting the reason and a date to reassess.
This approach avoids promising total visibility that the tools do not provide while preserving a clear path for intervention when safety is at stake.

The child still reaches the chatbot after an app limit
Check for a browser version, a second app, a guest profile or another signed-in account. Add the website or category restriction, block the alternative app, and confirm that the child’s device is still in the family group.
A quiet-hours schedule is being ignored
Verify the device’s date, time zone and operating-system account. Check that the schedule is attached to the child’s profile rather than the parent’s device, and update the family-control app and operating system before testing again.
Gemini is available even though the family rule says no
Reopen Family Link → child → Controls → Gemini → Gemini Apps and confirm that access is off for the correct child account. Then check whether the child is using a different Google account or an unmanaged browser profile.
Copilot controls are missing
Microsoft’s available settings vary by account and device. Look in both Family Safety and the device’s app, web and account restrictions; then test the result on every device where the child can sign in.
The child reports harmful or alarming output
Stop the session, save only the information needed to explain what happened, and use the service’s reporting route. Revisit the account setting, device permissions and family rule, and involve a trusted adult or qualified professional when the content indicates an immediate safety risk.

How often should parents review these settings?
Review after the first week, after any new chatbot installation, and whenever the child receives a new phone, tablet or school account. A short monthly check is useful for permissions, app lists, schedules and the child’s understanding of verification. Remove old exceptions and unused accounts; otherwise a forgotten route can undermine an otherwise well-designed limit.
Keep a simple record of the rule, the devices and accounts it covers, and the date you will revisit it. This makes it easier to change the allowance as school workload, maturity or the available AI features change without silently expanding surveillance.
What is the safest practical setup for most families?
Link the child’s chatbot account where that service supports a parent relationship, enforce a device-level daily limit and quiet-hours schedule, block or approve apps explicitly, and review microphone, camera and contact permissions. For Gemini, make the access decision in Family Link; for Copilot, use Family Safety or device settings and review feature-level restrictions. Finish by agreeing on verification, personal-data and shared-space rules. This layered setup limits access while acknowledging that no current filter can replace informed supervision.
