To make software start automatically, add it to your operating system’s built-in startup mechanism. On Windows 10 and 11, enable the app under Settings > Apps > Startup or Task Manager > Startup apps; if it is missing, place a shortcut in a Startup folder. On macOS, add it under System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions. On Ubuntu and other Linux desktops, use Startup Applications or a .desktop file in ~/.config/autostart/.
Those methods normally launch a program after you sign in. A program that must run before anyone logs in needs a boot-time task or service instead. Choosing the correct trigger prevents missing network credentials, invisible windows, duplicate launches and unnecessary delays during sign-in.
What does “start on startup” actually mean?
On a desktop computer, “startup” usually means login startup: the operating system opens the program after your user session and graphical desktop are ready. This is the right choice for visible applications such as messaging clients, note tools or a browser workspace.
Boot startup happens earlier, while the operating system is loading and before a user may have signed in. Use it for a background agent, server or monitoring process that must operate with no open desktop window. Boot jobs can run without your personal drives, saved credentials or graphical-session environment, so do not use them merely because they sound more reliable.

How do I make an app start automatically in Windows 10 or 11?
Start with the Settings or Task Manager list. These supported controls are easier to audit and remove than direct registry edits.
Enable a listed app in Settings
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Startup.
- Find the application and switch its control to On.
- Sign out and back in, or restart Windows, to verify that it opens.
Windows may show a startup-impact label beside an entry. Microsoft’s current guidance classifies Low impact as under 300 milliseconds of total CPU usage and under 292 kilobytes of disk usage, while High impact is over one second of CPU usage or over three megabytes of disk usage. These are classification thresholds, not a promise that enabling or disabling the app will save a specific amount of boot time.
Enable it in Task Manager
- Right-click an empty area of the taskbar and choose Task Manager (or press
Ctrl+Shift+Esc). - Select Startup apps. On older Windows 10 builds, this may appear as the Startup tab.
- Select the program and click Enable.
Task Manager is useful when Settings does not show enough detail or when you want to sort entries by impact. Select Disable to stop an item; disabling it does not uninstall the application.

What if the program is not listed?
Create a shortcut in the Startup folder. This works for traditional desktop programs and gives you a simple per-user or all-user scope.
- Press
Win+R, typeshell:appsfolder, and press Enter. This opens a view of installed applications. - Press
Win+Ragain, typeshell:startup, and press Enter. The folder corresponds to%userprofile%AppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuProgramsStartup. - Arrange the two File Explorer windows side by side, then drag the application into the Startup folder. Windows creates a shortcut rather than copying the program.
- Sign out and sign in to test it.
For every user on the computer, open shell:common startup instead. It maps to %ProgramData%MicrosoftWindowsStart MenuProgramsStartup and may require administrator permission. Delete the shortcut from the relevant folder to remove the automatic launch.
When should I use Task Scheduler?
Use Task Scheduler when the program needs a specific trigger, elevated privileges, delay, retry behavior or background execution. Open Task Scheduler, choose Create Task, and configure:

- Triggers: choose At log on for a user-session launch or At startup for a boot trigger. You can restrict the trigger to a particular account.
- Actions: choose Start a program, browse to the executable, and add arguments or a working directory when the application requires them.
- Conditions: decide whether the task may wait for AC power, an idle computer or a network connection.
- Settings: enable a delay, restart-on-failure behavior or a time limit if the software can hang.
- General: choose whether it runs only when your account is logged on or whether it may run in the background. “Run with highest privileges” should be enabled only when the program genuinely needs elevation.
A boot task may start before mapped network drives and user-specific credentials exist. If the application displays a window, an At log on trigger is usually more dependable than At startup.

Windows also reads startup commands from HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun for the current user, and from HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun plus HKLMSoftwareWow6432NodeMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun for all users. Registry entries can launch programs, but a typo, wrong executable path or unwanted command can affect logon and security. How do I make an app open when I log in to macOS?
macOS centralizes both automatic opening and many background permissions in Login Items & Extensions.
- Choose Apple menu > System Settings.
- Click General, then Login Items & Extensions.
- Under the login-items list, click Add and select an application, document, folder, server or other item.
- Log out and back in to confirm the result.
To stop an item, select it in the same list and click Remove. The panel also includes a control allowing an application to run in the background, for example to check for updates or synchronize while its main window is closed. Keep that permission only when the background function is useful to you.
What are LoginItem, LaunchAgent and LaunchDaemon?
Apple’s Service Management model separates user-visible and system-level jobs. A LoginItem launches when a user logs in. A LaunchAgent supplies helper behavior inside that user’s session. A LaunchDaemon can run at system startup without a logged-in user and normally has no graphical interface.
On macOS 13 and later, supported helper executables are associated with their parent app in the Login Items panel, where you can approve or disable them. Developers and administrators should use Apple’s documented service model rather than placing arbitrary executables in undocumented folders.

How do I auto-start a program on Linux?
Linux startup behavior depends on the desktop environment. Ubuntu’s GNOME desktop provides a graphical editor; the freedesktop standard provides a portable per-user method that many Linux desktops understand.
Use Ubuntu Startup Applications
- Open the Activities overview and search for Startup Applications. On some installations, press
Alt+F2, rungnome-session-properties, and press Enter. - Click Add.
- Enter a name, the command to run and an optional comment. For example, the command can be
firefoxif Firefox is available in your executable path. - Save the entry, then log out and back in.
If a command works in a terminal but not in Startup Applications, use its full path or set the required environment variables. GUI sessions may have a different PATH from an interactive shell.
Create a portable .desktop autostart entry
The freedesktop Desktop Application Autostart Specification defines automatic launching after a user has logged in. Create the per-user directory and a desktop-entry file:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
mkdir -p ~/.config/autostart
nano ~/.config/autostart/my-program.desktop
Put a valid desktop entry in the file, replacing the executable and arguments with your own command:
[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Name=My Program
Exec=/full/path/to/my-program --background
X-GNOME-Autostart-enabled=true
The Exec= line identifies the command. Avoid shell syntax such as pipes or redirection there; if you need shell logic, call a script explicitly. To disable an inherited entry without deleting it, a desktop file can use Hidden=true.
The normal per-user directory is ~/.config/autostart/. A system-wide installation can use /etc/xdg/autostart/ when the relevant XDG variables are unset, but editing that location affects other users and usually requires administrator rights. Remove your own file from ~/.config/autostart/ to stop the launch.

Why does my program not start automatically?
Most failures come from a wrong path, a disabled entry, a trigger that runs too early or two competing startup mechanisms.
Windows says it cannot find the app
In Settings or Task Manager, inspect the path associated with the entry. An uninstalled application, a moved executable, a removable drive that is disconnected or a network drive that is unavailable can leave a stale startup command. Repair the installation, update the shortcut to the current executable, or remove the obsolete entry.
The application starts twice
Check the application’s own preference for “launch at login” and the operating-system startup list or folder. Also inspect Task Scheduler for a duplicate task. Leave one mechanism enabled; otherwise each mechanism can create a separate process.
The app launches before it can access files or credentials
Change a boot trigger to a login trigger when the program needs your desktop, mapped drives, keychain access or user environment. For a background process that truly must start at boot, configure an explicit service and make the program handle unavailable resources with retries instead of assuming they already exist.
Sign-in became slow
Disable nonessential entries one at a time and restart between changes. Windows Task Manager’s impact label helps prioritize candidates; on macOS and Linux, review the Login Items or Startup Applications list. A program that performs updates or synchronization can consume resources after login even when its window is hidden.

The Linux entry works in a terminal but not at login
Use an absolute executable path, verify that the file is executable, and check whether the graphical session has the environment variables the command expects. If the program needs a shell script, put the logic in that script and point Exec= to it. Review the desktop session’s logs for permission or display-server errors.
How do I remove an automatic startup entry safely?
- Windows Settings: switch the app off under Start > Settings > Apps > Startup.
- Windows Task Manager: select the entry in Startup apps and click Disable.
- Windows Startup folder: delete only the shortcut from
shell:startuporshell:common startup; do not delete the application itself. - Windows Task Scheduler: locate the task, disable it first, then delete it if you are certain it is no longer needed.
- macOS: select the item under General > Login Items & Extensions and click Remove, or turn off its background permission.
- Linux GNOME: remove the entry in Startup Applications or delete the corresponding file from
~/.config/autostart/.
After removal, sign out or reboot to verify that no second mechanism is still launching the program. If the item returns, the application may be recreating its own startup registration; disable its in-app setting or uninstall its helper component through the application’s supported preferences.
What should I check before enabling a startup program?
- Confirm the executable belongs to software you intentionally installed.
- Choose login rather than boot unless pre-login operation is a documented requirement.
- Use a stable local path, especially when the program is stored on removable or network media.
- Decide whether the app needs a visible window, background permission or elevated privileges.
- Record how to disable the entry before testing it, so a faulty program cannot repeatedly disrupt sign-in.
- Test after a full sign-out or reboot, not only by launching the program manually.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make a website open automatically without installing a desktop app?
Yes. Add a browser shortcut or the browser itself to the same login mechanism, then set the shortcut’s target to the desired page where that operating system supports URL targets. A browser session may still require sign-in, extensions or network access before the page is usable.
Will a startup app run when the computer is locked?
A program launched at login normally continues running when you lock the screen, but it does not receive a new launch event each time the screen is unlocked. A boot-time service can run before login, although it may not have access to your desktop or personal credentials.
How can I delay an app so several programs do not open at once?
Windows Task Scheduler can add a delay to an “At log on” trigger. On Linux, use a small wrapper script that sleeps before starting the command; macOS users generally need the app’s own launch option or a documented helper rather than an unsupported Login Items delay.
Why does startup behavior change after an app update?
Installers can replace an executable, recreate a shortcut or change an app’s own launch-at-login preference. Recheck the startup list and the path after major updates, and remove any obsolete entry that points to an older installation.
