For a saltwater aquarium with corals, start with a consistent timer-controlled light cycle of 10–12 hours per day. That is NOAA Sea Grant’s general guidance—not a universal setting for every coral or a recommendation for fish-only tanks. Coral species, placement, and previous lighting matter, so set the schedule gradually and check light intensity at the coral’s depth where possible.
Start with the kind of aquarium you have
The 10–12-hour starting range applies to coral care. It should not automatically be treated as the right schedule for a fish-only saltwater aquarium: the sources cited here do not establish a specific ideal photoperiod for fish-only tanks or a universal schedule for preventing algae.
Corals use light to support nutrition, but their needs differ. NOAA Sea Grant advises considering a coral’s species, region of origin, reef depth, and previous captive lighting. The Ornamental Aquatic Trade Association (OATA) likewise notes that coral polyps have different requirements; among soft corals, some do better in relatively dim light while others grow faster in brighter conditions. See OATA’s guides to coral polyps and soft corals.
Choose a daily duration and assess intensity separately
For a coral-containing tank, NOAA Sea Grant’s archived coral-culture manual gives a general photoperiod of 10–12 hours per day, controlled with a timer. It also says that light intensity between 100 and 200 µmol/m²/s, measured at the coral’s depth, appears sufficient for most coral species. This is broad guidance from a 2013 manual, not a guarantee for every species, tank, or fixture. Read the NOAA Sea Grant coral-culture manual.

Duration and intensity are different settings. A timer can make the on/off cycle repeatable, but it cannot show whether the light reaching a coral is appropriate. Don’t use fixture wattage or how bright the tank looks to your eyes as a substitute for a coral-depth intensity measurement. If you can measure PAR at the coral’s position, use that information alongside the coral’s species and lighting history rather than treating the manual’s range as a target for every animal.
Set the schedule with a timer
- Identify the corals. Check their species and, if known, their natural depth or prior captive-light conditions. Use these details to guide intensity and placement.
- Choose a consistent daily window. Set the light to run for 10–12 hours per day as a general coral-tank starting point. Pick hours that suit your routine, then keep the cycle consistent.
- Program an aquarium light timer. Set the daily on and off times, then confirm that the fixture switches as expected. A basic mechanical or digital outlet timer can handle repeatable on/off timing.
- Check light at coral depth. Where possible, measure PAR where the coral sits. Adjust intensity or placement to suit the animals and the fixture; the timer does not set intensity or spectrum.
- Make changes gradually. If you introduce coral or change the lighting regime, acclimate it slowly and observe the animals rather than jumping straight to a new maximum.
Decide whether you need ramps or more advanced controls
A basic outlet timer switches power on and off. It does not dim a light, create a sunrise or sunset ramp, measure PAR, or correct an unsuitable spectrum. Those tasks require compatible dimmable lighting, a controller, or measurement equipment—and still call for choices suited to the tank.

Gradual ramps are optional, not a required universal setting. A 2021 Frontiers in Marine Science coral-spawning study used a specific programmed cycle with a three-hour ramp-up, a plateau, and a three-hour ramp-down; researchers also adjusted maximum intensity approximately monthly. That controlled, site-specific mesocosm is not a validated default for a home reef. The study notes that its controller’s seasonal table changed simulated sunrise and sunset timing but did not account for annual changes in solar irradiance. See the study’s methods and findings.
Another controlled study compared six-hour and twelve-hour illumination for Goniopora columna under its experimental conditions. It shows why duration may be studied for a particular species and setup; it does not establish a schedule for all saltwater aquariums. See the study on LED illumination and Goniopora columna.

Acclimate new coral or a changed light regime
Do not move a newly acquired coral directly into a substantially different lighting regime or abruptly raise it to a new maximum. NOAA’s manual advises slow acclimation regardless of the coral’s origin. OATA also recommends switching off aquarium lights while unpacking a new coral, avoiding bright light during introduction, and monitoring it closely during the first week. These sources do not establish a universal starting percentage or day-by-day intensity-increase schedule, so avoid applying one as if it were species-independent.
