Secure API keys by avoiding long-lived keys where possible, keeping any necessary secrets out of source code and client apps, limiting each key’s permissions, and delivering it only to the runtime that needs it. If a key is exposed, treat it as compromised: revoke it promptly, replace it, and check for unauthorized use.

Why API keys need protection

An API key is a bearer credential: someone who obtains it may be able to use the access it grants. Depending on its permissions, misuse can expose data, change it, disrupt a service, or create unexpected charges. Handle keys as secrets, not as ordinary configuration. Google Cloud’s API key guidance and GitHub’s secret-storage guidance explain the risks and protective practices.

Start by eliminating or replacing static keys

Before choosing a place to store a key, ask whether the application needs one at all. For cloud workloads, use a platform role, workload identity, or temporary credential when supported. These approaches can avoid keeping a long-lived key in application configuration. AWS recommends removing, replacing, or rotating secrets, and favors temporary credentials over long-term AWS access keys. For long-lived credentials to third-party services, central management can reduce unmanaged copies. AWS Well-Architected guidance

If a static key is unavoidable, store it in an appropriate platform secret facility or secrets manager, restrict access, and retrieve it at runtime. A manager reduces scattered copies, but it does not eliminate the need to protect the identity or credential that grants access to the manager. Compare options based on the key’s lifetime and scope, how it reaches the running service, audit and alert capabilities, rotation and revocation support, who can access it—including through CI/CD—and the impact if the secret store’s own access is compromised. Keep keys out of code and client applications

Do not hardcode a key in source code or commit an unencrypted credential to a repository, even a private one. Repository access can change, copies can persist, and a key can be exposed through forks, logs, or other workflows. GitHub recommends using secrets safely and provides guidance for keeping API credentials secure.

Do not ship a credential that must remain secret in browser or mobile application code. Users can inspect client-side code and traffic. Instead, have the client call your server, and have the server attach the credential when it makes the upstream API request. Google Cloud recommends this server-side pattern.

A local .env file may be convenient during development, but it is not safe merely because it is local. Keep it out of version control; if you must store credentials in such a file, GitHub advises encrypting it and never pushing it. Environment variables can be a way to deliver a secret to a runtime, but they are not an automatic security boundary. Protect process environments, logs, build artifacts, and diagnostic output according to the deployment platform’s threat model. Do not bake secrets into Docker ENV or ARG definitions. OWASP discusses runtime delivery and these container risks.

Limit what each key can do

Apply the narrowest restrictions the provider supports. Give a key only the permissions and API access its job requires, and restrict its use by source or application where appropriate. For Google Cloud API keys, relevant restrictions can include allowed APIs and, depending on the application, IP addresses, referrer URLs, or mobile apps. Google also advises isolating keys by person and application. Google Cloud API key best practices

Protect secrets in CI/CD and at runtime

Use a CI/CD secret facility or secrets manager for credentials a pipeline genuinely needs, and restrict who can view or change those secrets. Prefer having a deployed service retrieve only its own secret, rather than making the secret broadly available to build jobs. Use narrowly scoped identities, prevent untrusted jobs or forks from receiving secrets, and ensure that logs, debugging output, and pipeline artifacts cannot disclose values. Alert on unexpected access. AWS Well-Architected guidance and the OWASP cheat sheet cover secure secret use and management.

For every secret, identify which process needs it, which people and jobs can retrieve it, how the service receives it, and how access can be audited or revoked. This helps reveal exposures that a storage choice alone will not prevent.

Use scanning and push protection to catch mistakes

Enable repository secret scanning and push protection when available, and rescan repositories periodically. These controls can help detect or block accidental commits, but detection does not make an exposed, active key safe. If a credential was committed or otherwise disclosed, revoke it rather than relying on removing it from the visible file or repository history. GitHub’s credential guidance and AWS guidance recommend scanning and repository audits.

Rotate keys safely and respond to exposure

For planned changes, create a replacement, update every consumer, verify that the replacement works and is in use, then revoke or delete the old key. Use the provider’s current rotation procedure because the exact steps vary. If a key is exposed, do not wait for a scheduled rotation: assume compromise and revoke it promptly.

  1. Revoke the exposed key. Use the provider’s controls to disable or delete it so it can no longer authorize requests.
  2. Create a replacement if needed. Apply the narrow permissions and restrictions required by the legitimate workload.
  3. Update consumers. Change the relevant application, deployment, or pipeline configuration, then verify that the replacement is being used.
  4. Inspect activity and audit logs. Look for suspicious requests or changes and follow the provider’s incident-response process if you find signs of misuse.
  5. Find and remove other copies. Check the places the credential was delivered or stored, and fix the workflow that exposed it.

Removing a key from a commit or file does not undo a disclosure. Revoke first, then clean up copies and address the cause. GitHub’s guidance covers responding to exposed credentials and storing secrets safely; Google Cloud also describes key management and restriction practices in its API key guidance.
