Secure an AI agent by limiting what it can reach, enforcing authorization in trusted application code, treating every external and tool-produced instruction as untrusted data, and requiring human approval for consequential actions. Then test those controls against direct and indirect prompt injection, unauthorized tool use, data exfiltration, memory poisoning, and runaway chains.

Prompt injection cannot be reliably eliminated with a better system prompt or a keyword filter. The practical goal is to reduce the probability of misuse and contain the damage when an agent encounters hostile instructions. The right controls depend on the agent’s tools, credentials, data, and side effects.

What are prompt injection and tool abuse?

Prompt injection is an attempt to influence an AI model with instructions that conflict with the application’s intended task. A direct injection comes from the user’s message. An indirect injection is hidden in material the agent retrieves or processes, such as a webpage, document, email, API response, or another tool’s output.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Tool abuse occurs when manipulated model output causes an agent to use an allowed capability in an unsafe way. For example, an agent asked to summarize a support ticket might encounter text telling it to reveal internal notes, call an unrelated API, or send a message to an attacker. The model may treat that text as an instruction unless the surrounding system clearly separates data from commands.

The potential harm is determined less by the model’s conversational ability than by its connected tools and permissions. A read-only summarizer has a smaller blast radius than an agent that can change records, access private files, send messages, transfer data, or create additional credentials.

Can a system prompt protect an agent by itself?

No. A system prompt is guidance to the model, not an authorization boundary. A model can misinterpret instructions, follow hostile text retrieved from a source, or generate a dangerous tool call despite an explicit prohibition.

Authorization must be checked at the execution boundary, in a trusted service or application component that the model cannot override. Before a call runs, that component should verify the authenticated user, the current task or session, the selected tool, and every argument. If any check fails, the call should be rejected or held for review.

Prompt instructions still have value: they can define the agent’s role, explain how to label untrusted content, and improve normal behavior. They should be treated as one layer in a defense-in-depth design, never as proof that an operation is permitted.

How do I map an agent’s attack surface?

Start with an inventory of everything the agent can read, invoke, modify, or cause. Map the path from a user request through retrieval and model decisions to each downstream side effect.

  1. List tools and data sources. Include search, browsing, file access, databases, internal APIs, messaging, code execution, memory stores, and any tool that can create or modify another tool or credential.
  2. Record identities and credentials. For each integration, document which service account or user token is used, what scopes it has, and whether the credential is shared across tenants or tasks.
  3. Describe side effects. Mark operations that read data, write data, communicate externally, spend money, change permissions, delete records, or trigger physical or operational processes.
  4. Trace indirect inputs. Note where webpages, uploaded files, emails, API responses, retrieved memories, and tool results enter the model context. Assume each can contain attacker-controlled text.
  5. Identify recovery options. For every action, state whether it can be reversed, how quickly it can be detected, and who can stop it.

Use this map to create a task-specific capability set. If a task only requires reading, use a read-only identity and omit write tools entirely. Keep privileged operations out of broadly available agent contexts.

How should permissions be limited?

Apply least privilege to the agent, each tool, and each individual call. Grant only the capabilities needed for the current task, and make the permission decision independently of model text.

Scope tools to the task

Expose a small, explicit allowlist rather than a general-purpose toolbox. A report-writing agent may need a read-only search tool and a document workspace, but not account administration or outbound messaging. Remove tools from the session when the task no longer needs them.

Use separate identities

Prefer narrowly scoped service identities, read-only accounts, and per-tenant credentials. Do not place long-lived administrator tokens in prompts, memory, tool results, or logs. Keep secrets in a protected credential service and have the tool backend retrieve them only after authorization succeeds.

Separate tenants and trust zones

Do not let data retrieved for one customer become an instruction source for another customer’s session. Enforce tenant and object-level access in the data service, not just in retrieval prompts. Isolate high-trust administrative workflows from lower-trust browsing or customer-content workflows.

How do I enforce authorization at the tool boundary?

Every tool call should pass through a server-side policy check before execution. The model can propose an operation, but trusted code decides whether it is allowed.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Authenticate the caller. Bind the session to a verified user, service, or workflow identity.
  2. Authorize the operation. Check that this identity may use the specific tool for the current task and tenant.
  3. Validate arguments. Enforce types, ranges, allowed resource identifiers, destination rules, and business constraints. Reject unexpected fields rather than silently accepting them.
  4. Apply state and rate rules. Confirm that the requested transition is valid for the record’s current state and that call, retry, cost, and volume limits have not been exceeded.
  5. Require approval when classified as high impact. Send the exact proposed action and arguments to the approval mechanism instead of asking the model to self-approve.
  6. Execute with the minimum credential. The backend should use a scoped identity and return only the data the task requires.
  7. Record an auditable decision. Store the policy result, tool name, resource, actor, and outcome without logging secrets or unnecessary sensitive content.

Authorization belongs in the tool service or another trusted application component. A model-generated statement such as “the user approved this” is not evidence of approval.

How should external content and tool output be handled?

Keep retrieved material visibly and structurally separate from trusted instructions. Label it as untrusted data, pass it through a constrained interface, and validate its shape before the model can use it.

Separate data from instructions

Use distinct context fields or message roles for system policy, user intent, retrieved content, and tool results. Tell the model that text inside a webpage, document, email, or tool response is information to analyze, not an authority that can change policy or grant permissions.

Validate structured responses

When a tool is expected to return structured data, validate it against a schema and reject malformed or extra fields. Convert free-form output into a typed internal representation where practical. Do not let a tool response silently add a new tool, credential, recipient, or permission.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use filtering as a supplement

Instruction-pattern detection, sanitization, and content scanning can provide an additional block or alert. They cannot establish that the remaining text is safe: attackers can avoid obvious keywords, and benign content can contain imperative language. The authorization check and capability limits must still hold if filtering fails.

OWASP’s MCP Security Cheat Sheet states: “Treat every tool response as untrusted data, including responses from approved servers.” Approval of a server or connector does not make every value it returns trustworthy.

When should a human approve an agent action?

Insert an explicit approval checkpoint before an action that is high impact, difficult to reverse, externally visible, or capable of exposing sensitive information. The checkpoint must be enforced outside the model’s generated text.

Actions that normally deserve review

  • Sending messages or publishing content to an external recipient
  • Deleting or materially modifying records
  • Transferring data outside the current organization or tenant
  • Changing permissions, credentials, billing, or security settings
  • Executing code or commands against production systems
  • Submitting a transaction or another operation that is costly or hard to undo

Make the review meaningful

Show the reviewer the actual operation, target resources, recipients, data fields, and arguments that will be used. Explain the source of each important value and identify any uncertainty. Do not show only a natural-language summary that could omit a dangerous parameter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use fail-closed behavior when an approval service is unavailable, expired, or ambiguous. An approval should be bound to the specific action and arguments, have a clear expiry, and not authorize later changes to the request.

How can I prevent runaway chains and unexpected behavior?

Contain repetition and escalation with hard limits and independent monitoring. Limits should be chosen for the task and enforced by the orchestrator, not negotiated by the model.

  • Set a maximum number of tool calls and retries per task.
  • Limit recursion and chain depth when one tool can trigger another agent or workflow.
  • Enforce session-duration, concurrency, and cost ceilings.
  • Stop execution when the agent departs materially from the original task or begins accessing unrelated resources.
  • Require a fresh authorization decision when a workflow changes scope, identity, tenant, or destination.
  • Provide a kill switch that operators can use without asking the agent to stop itself.

Monitor structured decision metadata and action sequences, not just the final chat response. A sequence of harmless-looking calls can reveal data enumeration, privilege probing, or an attempted exfiltration.

How should memory and retrieval be secured?

Treat agent memory as a persistence layer with its own access control, validation, and retention rules. An attacker who can insert a durable instruction may influence future sessions long after the original content is gone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Keep user-provided notes, retrieved documents, tool results, and trusted policy in separate stores or fields.
  • Attach provenance, tenant, author, and timestamp metadata to memory entries.
  • Require validation and, where appropriate, human review before content becomes durable memory.
  • Prevent low-trust sessions from writing to shared instructions or policy stores.
  • Apply object-level authorization whenever memory is read, updated, or deleted.
  • Provide a way to quarantine and remove a suspicious memory entry, then re-evaluate tasks that consumed it.

Retrieval should return only the minimum relevant data. A larger context increases the number of places where hostile instructions can hide and the amount of information an accidental tool call could expose.

How do I test an agent’s defenses?

Test the boundaries and the complete action path, not only whether the model refuses a single malicious sentence. Use harmless payloads and instrumented tools so the exercise cannot affect production systems.

Maintain repeatable abuse cases

  • Direct override: a user asks the agent to ignore policy or reveal hidden instructions.
  • Indirect override: a webpage, document, email, API response, or tool result contains instructions aimed at the agent.
  • Unauthorized tool use: the model requests a tool outside the task allowlist or with an unauthorized resource.
  • Argument manipulation: a permitted tool is called with a different tenant, recipient, field, or destination than the user authorized.
  • Privilege escalation: the agent attempts to obtain broader credentials or install a new capability.
  • Data exfiltration: sensitive values are sent to an unapproved endpoint or embedded in an outbound message.
  • Memory poisoning: hostile content is written to durable memory and influences a later session.
  • Recursion and resource abuse: repeated calls, retries, or agent handoffs consume excessive time or cost.

Vary the payloads

Include attacks that do not contain obvious screened keywords, that split instructions across fields, and that hide directives in formatting, metadata, or long documents. Test both successful and failed authorization paths, expired approvals, malformed tool responses, and unavailable policy services.

Re-test after changes

Repeat the suite after changing prompts, models, tools, memory, retrieval sources, policies, or providers. A defense that worked with one model or connector can fail when the surrounding system changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

What should be monitored and logged?

Collect enough structured evidence to reconstruct an action without creating a new store of secrets. Useful fields include the session and tenant, authenticated actor, task identifier, tool name and version, requested resource, policy decision, approval identifier, result status, and timing.

Redact credentials, tokens, personal data, and unnecessary prompt or response content. Protect logs with access controls and integrity measures, and define retention according to the sensitivity of the workflow. Alert on denied calls, repeated authorization failures, unusual destinations, rapid tool sequences, chain-depth changes, and access outside the task’s normal data set.

When an alert fires, pause or revoke the affected session, disable the implicated credential if necessary, preserve the relevant decision records, and inspect retrieved content and memory entries for the injection source. Recovery should include removing persistence, correcting the policy or connector, and replaying the abuse cases that exposed the problem.

Which security architecture fits an agent’s level of agency?

Choose the architecture by the side effects the task requires, not by the model’s advertised capabilities. The following patterns illustrate the trade-offs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Pattern Typical capabilities Permission and approval posture Primary residual risk
Read-only analyst Search and summarize approved data Read-only identity; no external writes; review usually limited to data-access policy Information disclosure or poisoned summaries
Bounded workflow agent Reads records and performs a small set of predefined updates Server-side allowlist, object-level checks, strict argument validation, approval for consequential updates Incorrect or manipulated state transitions
High-agency operator Multiple systems, outbound communication, code or administrative actions Separate credentials, narrow task windows, mandatory review for high-impact steps, hard chain and cost limits Larger blast radius, exfiltration, and runaway execution

Compare candidate implementations on six questions: What tools and permission scopes are available? Is authorization checked server-side on every call? How sensitive is the reachable data? Which actions require approval, and can they be reversed? How are external content and tool output labeled and validated? What testing, monitoring, and chain limits are in place?

What is a practical implementation sequence?

Use this sequence when hardening an existing agent or designing a new one.

  1. Define the task contract. State the intended user, inputs, outputs, allowed resources, and forbidden side effects.
  2. Build the capability inventory. Map tools, data, credentials, memory, downstream systems, and recovery controls.
  3. Create server-side policy. Implement identity, tenant, object, tool, argument, state, and rate checks outside the model.
  4. Reduce the default capability set. Start with no tools, then add only the minimum read or write capability required for the task.
  5. Partition trust zones. Separate system policy, user intent, retrieved content, tool responses, and durable memory.
  6. Classify actions by impact. Route external, destructive, privileged, costly, or irreversible operations to explicit approval.
  7. Add containment. Enforce call, retry, chain, duration, concurrency, and cost limits with an operator kill switch.
  8. Instrument decisions. Emit privacy-conscious, tamper-resistant records for authorization, approval, execution, and denial.
  9. Run adversarial tests. Exercise direct and indirect injection, misuse, exfiltration, poisoning, malformed output, and recursion with safe fixtures.
  10. Operate a change loop. Re-test and review alerts whenever the model, prompt, tool, memory, retrieval, policy, or provider changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I disable web browsing to eliminate prompt injection?

Disabling browsing removes one indirect-input path but does not stop direct injection, malicious uploaded files, hostile emails, or compromised tool responses. If browsing is required, isolate it behind read-only retrieval, strict data separation, and the same authorization and approval controls used for every other source.

What should happen when a tool returns suspicious instructions during a live task?

Treat the response as untrusted data, stop any dependent high-impact action, and preserve the response and policy decision for investigation. Resume only after a trusted component validates the result or a human approves a specific, unchanged operation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do multi-agent systems need separate identities?

Yes, whenever agents have different trust levels or responsibilities. Give each agent its own narrowly scoped identity and enforce authorization on handoffs so one agent cannot use another agent’s privileges merely by asking for them.

What evidence should an auditor request for an agent?

Ask for the capability inventory, server-side authorization rules, approval records, tool and memory schemas, abuse-test cases and results, chain and cost limits, and sample redacted decision logs. The evidence should demonstrate that controls still apply when the model receives hostile external content.
