The fastest way to screenshot an iPhone depends on its controls: press Side + Volume Up on Face ID models, or use the Home button with the side or top button on older designs. After capture, iPhone lets you crop, annotate, share, save a full webpage as a PDF, or trigger the action with Back Tap, Siri, or AssistiveTouch instead of physical buttons.

This guide covers ten practical screenshot techniques, the iOS 26 Screen Capture options that change preview and image format, and when screen recording is a better choice than a still image. Menu names and available options can vary by iOS release, iPhone model, language, and display.

Which screenshot method should I use?

Choose the method that matches what you need to capture. A hardware shortcut is quickest for one screen; Full Page is designed for supported documents and webpages; Back Tap, Siri, and AssistiveTouch help when pressing two buttons is difficult; and Screen Recording is the right tool for motion or narration.

Method Hardware required Output scope Destination Editing and compatibility
Button shortcut Two physical buttons Visible screen Photos Crop, Markup, share or save; SDR/HDR format depends on settings
Full Page One normal screenshot, then an on-screen control Entire supported page beyond the visible screen PDF in Files Preview, crop, Markup and save controls are available
Back Tap Double- or triple-tap gesture Visible screen Photos Uses the same post-capture editor
Siri or AssistiveTouch Voice command or on-screen accessibility control Visible screen Photos Useful for one-handed or accessibility workflows
Screen Recording Control Center control Moving content, with optional narration Photos Three-second countdown; microphone can be enabled

How do I screenshot an iPhone with the buttons?

Use a quick simultaneous press, then release immediately. Holding the buttons can open other controls instead of taking the image.

Face ID iPhones

  1. Display the screen you want to keep.
  2. Press the Side button and Volume Up button together.
  3. Release both buttons quickly.
  4. Tap the preview or wait for it to disappear. The image is stored in Photos.

iPhones with a Home button

On models with a side button, press the Side button and Home button together. On models with a top button, press the Top button and Home button together. Release quickly after the flash and shutter sound.

If the screen locks, volume changes, or Siri appears, the buttons were not pressed at the same time. Try placing one finger on each control and making a short, synchronized press.

How can I capture an entire webpage instead of one screen?

Take a normal screenshot in a supported app such as Safari, then switch the editor to Full Page. This captures content below the visible edge rather than only the pixels currently shown.

  1. Open the webpage or supported document and position it where you want the capture to begin.
  2. Take a screenshot with the appropriate button shortcut or another method below.
  3. Tap the screenshot preview before it closes.
  4. Choose Full Page at the top of the editor.
  5. Drag through the page preview to inspect the captured length.
  6. Use the crop controls if you need to remove extra margins or content.

The Full Page tab appears only where the current app and document support it. If you see only the screen capture, that context can be saved as a regular image but not extended through the page with this control.

How do I save a long iPhone screenshot as a PDF?

Full Page captures are saved as PDF files through the Files app rather than as ordinary images in Photos.

  1. Capture the page and open the screenshot editor.
  2. Tap Full Page.
  3. Tap the save control in the editor.
  4. Choose Save PDF to Files.
  5. Select an iCloud Drive or local Files destination, create a folder if needed, and tap Save.

Use this workflow for receipts, instructions, articles, or other supported pages that need to remain searchable and scrollable as one document. A PDF is a separate output from the original screenshot image, so keep the image in Photos if you also need a quick visual reference.

How do I crop an iPhone screenshot before sharing it?

Crop immediately in the screenshot editor to remove browser controls, private details at the edge, or irrelevant empty space before the file leaves your phone.

  1. Tap the screenshot thumbnail or open the image in Photos.
  2. Choose the edit control, then select the crop tool.
  3. Drag the corner and edge handles until only the useful area remains.
  4. Confirm the crop and use Share to send the edited result.

Cropping is a visual boundary, not a privacy guarantee for information that remains inside the frame. Check the complete image at normal size before sending it.

How do I mark up or annotate an iPhone screenshot?

Markup lets you point out the exact control, error, or region another person needs to see without opening a separate drawing app.

  1. Open the screenshot preview or the image in Photos.
  2. Tap Markup.
  3. Choose a pen, highlighter, or pencil and draw over the image.
  4. Add a callout or other available markup element when a label is clearer than a freehand circle.
  5. Tap Done, then choose whether to save or share the annotated copy.

Use a contrasting color and keep marks outside text whenever possible. For a support request, one arrow and a short label usually communicate more clearly than covering the whole screen with highlights.

Where can I share or save a screenshot right after taking it?

The post-capture editor gives you a destination choice immediately, while every ordinary screenshot is also organized in Photos.

  1. Tap the lower-left preview after capture.
  2. Make any crop or Markup changes.
  3. Use Share to send it to an app or contact, or use the save control to keep it on the device.
  4. To find older captures, open Photos and go to Collections > Media Types > Screenshots.

For long captures, the save option can create a PDF in Files. For a standard one-screen capture, Photos remains the normal library and the screenshot receives the same editing options as other images.

How do I take a screenshot with Back Tap?

Back Tap assigns a screenshot to a double- or triple-tap on the back of the iPhone, eliminating the need to coordinate two buttons.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Accessibility > Touch > Back Tap.
  3. Choose Double Tap or Triple Tap.
  4. Select Screenshot.
  5. Close Settings and tap the back of the iPhone with the chosen gesture.

Apple also allows Back Tap to run shortcuts and accessibility actions. If accidental captures occur, switch from Double Tap to Triple Tap or assign a different action.

How can I screenshot without pressing physical buttons?

Siri and AssistiveTouch are Apple-supported alternatives when buttons are awkward to reach, painful to press, or unavailable.

Siri

Activate Siri using your configured voice or activation control and say that you want to take a screenshot. Siri performs the capture, after which the same preview and editing controls are available.

AssistiveTouch

  1. Open Settings > Accessibility > Touch > AssistiveTouch.
  2. Turn on AssistiveTouch.
  3. Configure the floating menu or a custom action to use Screenshot.
  4. Tap the AssistiveTouch control whenever you need a capture.

These options are especially useful for one-handed operation. They also avoid repeatedly pressing a button combination on a case or device with a difficult-to-reach control.

Why did my iPhone screenshot preview change?

Recent iOS releases can show screenshots in a full-screen editing view with quick tools instead of the temporary lower-left thumbnail familiar from iOS 18 and earlier. You can choose the behavior in Screen Capture settings.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Choose Screen Capture.
  4. Turn Full-Screen Previews off if you prefer a temporary thumbnail in the lower-left corner.

With full-screen previews enabled, the editor appears immediately after capture, which is useful when you routinely crop, annotate, or share. With it disabled, the smaller thumbnail keeps the current app visible and lets you continue working without opening the editor.

Which Screen Capture settings should I change for image quality and compatibility?

Screen Capture settings also control automatic analysis, vehicle-display captures, and whether screenshots use SDR or HDR. The right choice depends on where the file will be viewed.

Automatic Visual Look Up

On supported iPhone models and in supported languages, Automatic Visual Look Up can analyze screenshot content. Availability depends on the device, iOS release, and language, so the switch may not appear for every user.

CarPlay Screenshots

The Screen Capture settings include a control for CarPlay Screenshots. Enable it only if you want captures of the CarPlay interface to be included in your screenshot workflow.

SDR versus HDR

Setting File format Best use Important limitation
SDR PNG Broad compatibility with apps, browsers, and displays Does not retain the additional brightness and color range of HDR
HDR HEIF Preserving greater brightness and color on compatible hardware Full-quality viewing requires an HDR display and compatible software

Choose SDR when a screenshot will move through systems with uncertain format support. Choose HDR when preserving the original brightness and color matters and everyone viewing the file has an HDR-capable display and software.

When should I use Screen Recording instead of a screenshot?

Use Screen Recording for motion, a narrated demonstration, or a sequence of actions. A still screenshot cannot show scrolling, animation, or timing.

  1. Open Control Center and add Screen Recording if the control is not already present.
  2. Tap the recording control. A three-second countdown begins.
  3. For narration, press and hold the recording control and enable the microphone before starting.
  4. Perform the demonstration.
  5. Stop recording from the recording control or status control. The video saves to Photos.

Some apps block screen capture, and screen mirroring cannot run at the same time as recording. If the resulting video has no app content or the recording control is unavailable, those restrictions may be responsible rather than a storage or button problem.

What is the quickest troubleshooting checklist?

  • No screenshot appears: verify the correct button pair for your iPhone design and release both buttons quickly.
  • Full Page is missing: confirm that the current app or document supports Full Page; the control is not universal.
  • The preview interrupts your work: change Settings > General > Screen Capture > Full-Screen Previews.
  • The file looks different on another device: check whether the capture is SDR PNG or HDR HEIF and whether the destination supports HDR.
  • Buttons are difficult to use: configure Back Tap, Siri, or AssistiveTouch.
  • You need movement or narration: use Screen Recording and enable its microphone option before starting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I turn a normal screenshot into a full-page capture later?

No. The Full Page option must be selected in the post-capture editor while the supported page or document is still associated with that screenshot. If it is not offered, take another capture in a supported context.

Why is my screenshot saved as HEIF instead of PNG?

The Screen Capture format is set to HDR. HDR screenshots use HEIF so they can retain more brightness and color; changing the setting to SDR produces PNG files for wider compatibility.

Can I use Back Tap to run something besides Screenshot?

Yes. Back Tap can be assigned to accessibility features, shortcuts, and other actions as well as screenshots. Double Tap and Triple Tap are configured independently.

Can I narrate an iPhone screen recording?

Yes. Press and hold the Screen Recording control in Control Center, turn on the microphone, and then start the recording. The video is saved to Photos after you stop.
