You can run 10,000 or more AI batch tasks on Amazon EKS by using Kubernetes Jobs or Indexed Jobs to define the work, setting an explicit concurrency limit, and letting EKS Auto Mode provision suitable compute for pods that cannot be scheduled. The safeguards matter as much as the autoscaler: separate CPU, accelerator, Spot, and protected workloads; cap NodePool capacity; check regional quotas; and make tasks safe to retry through idempotent outputs and durable checkpoints.

Ten thousand is a workload target, not an EKS Auto Mode throughput guarantee. The number of nodes, startup time, completion time, and bill depend on task resource requests, image and data transfer, available accelerators, region, and account capacity.

How do EKS Auto Mode and Karpenter scale batch jobs?

Kubernetes decides how many task pods to run; node provisioning makes room for them. A Kubernetes Job controller creates pods to complete work, while EKS Auto Mode responds when a pod cannot fit on existing nodes by provisioning compute that matches the pod’s requirements. Auto Mode is a managed system built on Karpenter, which selects and creates nodes based on resources and constraints such as storage, architecture, acceleration, and scheduling rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Auto Mode also continuously packs workloads, consolidates underused nodes, and removes nodes when appropriate. That elasticity can reduce idle capacity, but it does not decide that 10,000 pods should launch at once. Set the workload’s concurrency and the infrastructure’s ceilings deliberately: unconstrained demand can cause a capacity surge, expensive fallback instances, or a long queue of unschedulable pods.

Auto Mode provides managed NodePools and NodeClasses and uses Amazon-provided Bottlerocket AMIs. It can coexist with EKS managed node groups. With self-managed Karpenter, the customer retains more operational work, including controller and AMI management, patching, and interruption handling. The choice is therefore partly about who owns the node lifecycle and how much control the platform team needs over the operating environment.

How should you represent 10,000 tasks in Kubernetes?

Use Kubernetes Jobs for finite work and set parallelism to the maximum number of tasks you intend to run concurrently. Set completions to the required total when the job has a known number of tasks. A value of 10,000 completions describes the amount of work; it does not require 10,000 pods to run simultaneously.

For independent tasks that can be mapped to stable input partitions, use an Indexed Job with completionMode: Indexed. Each task receives a stable index that can identify its input partition and output key. For work whose items arrive dynamically or are assigned by a queue, a work-queue Job pattern may fit better. The key decision is whether task membership is fixed and indexable or supplied as work becomes available.

One large Indexed Job or many smaller Jobs?

Approach Useful when Trade-off
One large Indexed Job Tasks share a configuration and can be addressed by stable indexes. Centralizes completion and per-index retry controls, but groups many tasks under one Job object and its policy.
Many smaller Jobs Work needs separate configurations, release windows, or failure isolation. Provides finer-grained control, but creates more API objects and requires an external way to manage submission and queueing.

Neither pattern makes task execution exactly once. Kubernetes warns that a program can sometimes start more than once, and failed pods may be recreated with exponential backoff. Design each task to tolerate duplicate execution: use a stable task key, make writes idempotent, and store checkpoints or intermediate state outside the container’s ephemeral filesystem. Bound retries so a persistent defect does not turn into a retry storm.

How do you prevent an uncontrolled burst and bill?

Use two separate controls: Job concurrency limits how much work Kubernetes attempts at once, and NodePool limits cap the infrastructure Auto Mode can provision. Set the NodePool CPU and memory ceilings for the intended burst plus headroom for node replacement. A limit is a hard ceiling: when it is reached, new pods may remain Pending even when there is demand.

Constrain NodePool instance categories, families, and maximum sizes as well as aggregate limits. Without suitable constraints, a fallback to a much larger or more expensive instance may satisfy a pod while changing the cost profile. AWS documentation gives an example of a NodePool limited to 500 vCPUs and 1,000 GiB of memory; those are example limits, not recommended values for every cluster. AWS also recommends moderate instance sizes for bursty workloads.

Plan the limit around what you are willing and able to run, not just the theoretical maximum. Consider per-task requests, intended parallelism, the resource mix, replacement overlap, and separate budgets for each workload class. A CPU preprocessing pool should not silently consume the capacity reserved for accelerators or protected training tasks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should you check before increasing concurrency?

  • Measure representative tasks for CPU, memory, accelerator use, and ephemeral storage rather than estimating from a small or atypical job.
  • Account for image-pull time, data-transfer volume, and checkpoint interval; compute is not the only source of startup delay or cost.
  • Check EKS, EC2, VPC, IP-address, and accelerator quotas in every target region. AWS notes that accounts have default service quotas, generally scoped by region; some soft limits can be increased by request, while some hard limits cannot.
  • Set capacity and concurrency ceilings together. If pods are Pending, identify whether the cause is a deliberate NodePool limit, a quota, a missing compatible instance, or another scheduling requirement before raising limits.

How should you separate CPU, GPU, and other AI workloads?

Use separate workload classes and NodePools for materially different resource and reliability needs. For example, CPU preprocessing, GPU inference, distributed training, and evaluation can have distinct pod requests, scheduling rules, and capacity ceilings. Match each class to NodePool requirements for architecture, accelerator family, capacity type, and maximum size. This reduces the chance that one workload’s burst consumes capacity intended for another.

For GPU or Trainium work, express the accelerator requirement in scheduling constraints so pods do not land on incompatible nodes. Keep container images and model artifacts close to the compute region to reduce avoidable transfer time and traffic. Autoscaling cannot compensate for a pod that asks for the wrong resource, a capacity type that is unavailable, or an image and dataset that take too long to reach the node.

Dynamic or static accelerator capacity?

Provisioning approach How it behaves Best fit
Dynamic Accelerator nodes are provisioned as pods are scheduled. Burst workloads where elastic capacity matters more than having nodes ready in advance.
Static A baseline pool is maintained even before a burst arrives. Workloads that value immediate baseline readiness enough to accept the cost of keeping capacity available.

Dynamic and static provisioning can coexist. A baseline can serve time-sensitive work while dynamic capacity handles larger bursts, provided the pools and their limits are planned so their demands do not conflict.

Should AI batch jobs use Spot or On-Demand capacity?

Spot uses spare EC2 capacity and is appropriate when a task can recover from interruption. AWS states that Spot can offer up to 90% savings versus On-Demand and documents a two-minute interruption notice. Those figures describe the published opportunity and notice, not guaranteed savings or a guarantee that replacement capacity will be immediately available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Capacity type Potential advantage Operational consideration
Spot Lower price than On-Demand when spare capacity is available. Instances can be interrupted; tasks need durable checkpoints, resumability, and retry-safe output handling.
On-Demand A straightforward choice for work that cannot tolerate Spot interruptions. Usually costs more than Spot; availability still depends on regional and instance capacity.
Capacity Blocks or On-Demand Capacity Reservations Configured reserved capacity can provide a planned capacity option for accelerator work. Capacity Blocks have fixed end times, so jobs must checkpoint before expiration.

EKS Auto Mode and Karpenter support On-Demand, Spot, Capacity Blocks, and On-Demand Capacity Reservations for accelerated workloads. When configured, reserved capacity is selected before Spot or On-Demand. A mix can work well: maintain a small On-Demand or reserved baseline for system services and latency-sensitive work, then use Spot for resumable batch tasks after recovery behavior has been tested.

How do you keep retries and node consolidation from losing work?

Assume any pod can be restarted or duplicated. Write outputs under deterministic task keys or use another idempotent commit strategy, and checkpoint to durable storage at a cadence suited to the cost of redoing work. A checkpoint should let a replacement pod resume useful progress rather than relying on files left on a node that may disappear.

Use Kubernetes podFailurePolicy to distinguish failures with different meanings. An infrastructure disruption that should be retried without consuming the application retry budget can use Ignore. A deterministic configuration or code error can use FailJob. For an Indexed Job where only one task index should stop, FailIndex can be paired with backoffLimitPerIndex. Use maxFailedIndexes as a circuit breaker when too many indexes fail. Kubernetes API documentation caps pod-failure-policy rules at 20, so keep the policy compact and validate it against actual termination reasons.

When is do-not-disrupt appropriate?

Auto Mode and Karpenter can consolidate underused nodes, and voluntary disruption can be costly for long-running training or ETL work that has not saved progress. The karpenter.sh/do-not-disrupt annotation protects a pod from voluntary consolidation and drift remediation. It can also keep expensive capacity stranded, so it is not a substitute for checkpoints and retry-safe tasks.

Choice What it protects Cost or limitation
do-not-disrupt A critical section from voluntary consolidation or drift remediation. Can prevent useful cleanup and leave costly nodes idle; remove it when protection is no longer needed.
Checkpoint and retry Progress across interruptions and replacement pods. Requires application changes and durable state, but supports recovery and later consolidation.

Use the annotation only where disruption would cause data loss or substantial rework. Otherwise, favor checkpoints, bounded retries, and disruption budgets. For Capacity Blocks, checkpoint before the fixed end time; AWS documents pre-draining behavior ahead of termination, but the workload still needs a recovery plan.

What rollout sequence reduces risk?

Scale in stages rather than submitting the full target concurrency before measuring one task and validating the capacity path. A staged ramp exposes whether the constraint is scheduling, provisioning, quota, image delivery, data movement, or task reliability.

  1. Measure one representative task. Record CPU, memory, GPU or Trainium use, ephemeral storage, image-pull time, data-transfer volume, and checkpoint interval.
  2. Separate workload pools. Create NodePools for system services, CPU preprocessing, accelerators, Spot, and protected long-running jobs as required by the workload mix.
  3. Set infrastructure ceilings. Configure NodePool CPU and memory limits based on intended concurrency and node-replacement overlap; constrain instance categories and sizes.
  4. Set Job behavior. Choose parallelism and completions; use Indexed mode when stable task indexes help. Configure backoffLimitPerIndex, maxFailedIndexes, and podFailurePolicy where appropriate.
  5. Preflight quotas. Check EKS, EC2, VPC, IP, and accelerator capacity in each target region. Request soft-limit increases before the launch window.
  6. Ramp and measure. Load test at increasing concurrency. Track pending-pod time, node provisioning and scheduling latency, retry rate, interruption recovery, and cost per completed task.
  7. Enable Spot only after recovery tests pass. Verify checkpoint restoration and idempotent writes under interruption; retain suitable baseline capacity for system and latency-sensitive workloads.
  8. Release temporary protection. Remove do-not-disrupt when critical sections finish so eligible nodes can be consolidated.

What should you expect from a 10,000-job target?

It is a scale goal, not a published service guarantee. No independent benchmark establishes guaranteed throughput, startup latency, node count, or cost for exactly 10,000 AI batch jobs on EKS Auto Mode. Treat those as measurements to make on your own workload and account, under the region, instance mix, quotas, data path, and concurrency limits you plan to use.

The practical design is a controlled pipeline: Kubernetes defines and bounds task concurrency; Auto Mode provisions nodes for eligible pending pods; NodePool limits and instance constraints cap infrastructure exposure; and application-level idempotency and checkpoints make retries and interruptions survivable. A successful ramp proves not merely that pods can start, but that tasks finish, recover, and stay within the capacity and cost envelope you set.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can EKS Auto Mode replace a Kubernetes job queue?

No. Auto Mode provisions node capacity for pods that Kubernetes has already created; it does not assign application work or decide how many tasks a controller should run. Use a Job controller or a work-queue design to manage task creation and concurrency.

Can I use Auto Mode alongside EKS managed node groups?

Yes. AWS describes Auto Mode as able to coexist with managed node groups. Decide which workloads each capacity path owns and keep their scheduling requirements distinct enough to avoid unintended placement.

Why can pods stay Pending even when Auto Mode is enabled?

Autoscaling cannot provision capacity past a NodePool hard limit, an unavailable or incompatible instance choice, or an account quota. Check the pod’s resource and accelerator requests, NodePool constraints and limits, and regional service capacity before changing concurrency.

Does a Capacity Block guarantee a batch job will finish?

No. Capacity Blocks have a fixed end time, so work must checkpoint before expiration and be able to resume elsewhere if necessary. AWS documents pre-draining before termination, but that is not a substitute for application-level recovery.
