Capture the Google results page you need, then save it with a consistent name such as google-serp_best-running-shoes_2026-10-03.png. The filename makes the query and capture date easy to find later; keep the locale, device or viewport, and sign-in context in a nearby note if you plan to compare results over time.
Choose what part of the results page to capture
Run the exact Google query you want to document and wait for the results page to finish rendering. Then choose the capture scope based on what the screenshot needs to show:
- Visible area: Use this when the top-of-page layout is the record you need.
- Full page: Use this when you need lower results or other below-the-fold modules. Not every tool captures every SERP component in the same way, so inspect the result.
Use a keyword-and-date filename
- Start with the fixed prefix
google-serp_. - Add a lowercase version of the query. Replace spaces and punctuation with hyphens so the name is easy to scan.
- Add an underscore, then the capture date in year-month-day order:
YYYY-MM-DD. - Use the appropriate file extension, such as
.png.
For example, a capture of “best running shoes” made on October 3, 2026 could be saved as google-serp_best-running-shoes_2026-10-03.png. This is a practical naming convention, not a Google or Chrome requirement. The date is the capture date, not a claim about when the search results changed.
Capture a SERP with Chrome Headless
Chrome for Developers documents screenshot capture with Chrome’s Headless command-line interface and a viewport-size option. The following shell example uses that capability, then renames the default screenshot output to the query-and-date convention. It assumes the chrome command is available in your shell and that the target folder exists.

chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=1440,1200 "https://www.google.com/search?q=best+running+shoes"
mv screenshot.png google-serp_best-running-shoes_2026-10-03.pngReplace the search URL with the exact query URL you intend to record, and replace the date with the actual capture date. Chrome’s older Headless guidance identifies screenshot.png as the default output name; the rename step makes it fit the filename pattern. A viewport screenshot records the browser’s visible area, not automatically the entire page. If lower results are part of the record, use a full-page capture option and verify that the saved image includes the modules you need.

Record context for useful comparisons
A SERP screenshot is evidence of one capture in one context, not a universal or necessarily reproducible view. Save a nearby text note or metadata record with the exact query and any context relevant to your comparison:
- Capture date and, if useful, time.
- Google locale or location used.
- Device or viewport dimensions.
- Whether you were signed in.
- Whether the image captures the visible area or the full page.
Keep the note alongside the image, or use a matching basename such as google-serp_best-running-shoes_2026-10-03.txt. That preserves context without making the image filename unwieldy.

When a browser extension may help
Extensions can be useful when you need full-page capture, configurable filename templates, or a download flow without scripting. Their features and store listings can change, so check the current listing, browser compatibility, permissions, and privacy terms before installing one. Regardless of the extension, inspect the actual filename if both the exact keyword and date must be present.
- GoFullPage describes full-page capture and exports. Its store listing displays a release-history entry dated 2026-09-24; that vendor-maintained history is not independent confirmation of how it handles every current Google results page.
- Auto-Name Screenshot describes visible-area or full-page capture, AI-generated descriptive filenames, PNG/PDF export, five free AI titles per month, and a $4/month Pro tier. Its listing says screenshot processing is used to suggest a filename and showed no ratings. An automatically suggested name is not a guarantee that the exact query and date appear correctly; check the current listing, privacy terms, and price.
- Full Page Screenshot for Google Chrome describes configurable filename templates, capture settings, formats, and automatic downloads. These are listing claims and may change.
There is no established formal standard for keyword-and-date screenshot filenames. The convention above is useful because it is readable and sorts chronologically when filenames are ordered alphabetically.

What date should I put in the filename?
Use the date the screenshot was captured, formatted as YYYY-MM-DD.

Should a SERP screenshot be PNG or PDF?
Use PNG for a straightforward image record. PDF is an option when your capture tool supports it and that format better suits your filing or sharing needs.
