Sandbox the agent before connecting it to GitHub: run each task in a disposable, isolated environment, expose only the repository files it needs, block network access by default, and keep credentials and privileged controls outside that environment. Start with read-only GitHub access, then add narrowly scoped, short-lived write capability only after reviewing the proposed change. A prompt telling an agent to behave safely is not a security boundary; the files, commands, credentials, and network available to its runtime determine what it can actually do.

What does sandboxing an AI coding agent protect?

A sandbox is an execution boundary around the agent’s work, not a rule in its prompt. It limits which files the agent can read or change, which commands it can run, and where it can connect. The exact boundary depends on the implementation: a process-level restriction, a container, and a virtual machine do not provide the same degree of isolation.

This matters because agent-generated code can use the access available to its environment. OpenAI’s Sandbox security guidance puts the risk plainly: “Agent-generated code can access the files, credentials, and network available to its environment.” That includes actions triggered by a build, test, package installer, or repository script, not just actions the agent describes in chat.

Assume that repository content can be adversarial. An issue description, pull-request comment, HTML comment, source file, dependency, build script, or generated artifact could contain instructions intended to influence the agent or make code execute. The sandbox should limit the consequences if the agent follows those instructions or runs unsafe code.

Separate the agent’s untrusted workspace from the trusted systems that control authentication, billing, audit logs, approvals, and recovery. If the agent can read a secret, use a host credential, or reach an unrestricted network, a clean prompt or a successful test run does not make that access safe.

How should I decide what access the agent needs?

Classify the repository and the actions the agent may take before connecting it to GitHub. Treat a private repository as trusted only if its content, contributors, dependencies, and automation are actually within your trust boundary.

Classify the repository

  • Private and trusted: Access is limited to people and automation you trust, but dependencies and scripts still need consideration.
  • Mixed-trust: Some contributors, pull requests, issues, or dependencies may be untrusted. Do not give the agent credentials or write access merely because the repository is private.
  • Public or untrusted: Treat repository content and incoming contributions as attacker-controlled input. Use the strongest isolation and the least GitHub access compatible with the task.

Classify each action

Separate reading code from changing code, and changing code from taking actions that affect other people or systems. Reading repository contents, proposing a patch, pushing a branch, commenting, merging, releasing, deploying, and spending money are different levels of authority. Decide which are allowed for the current task, which require a human, and which the agent cannot perform at all.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This classification should drive both the runtime boundary and the GitHub token. An agent asked to explain a test failure may need repository contents and test output but not permission to push. An agent asked to prepare a change may need a writable temporary worktree, while merge and deployment authority remain outside its reach.

What should the sandbox architecture look like?

Use a fresh container or lightweight VM for each task, and keep the trusted harness outside it. Give the agent a non-root account, only the repository and required directories, and a temporary writable worktree. Do not mount host credentials or control interfaces into the agent’s environment.

  1. Trusted harness: Holds authentication, approval logic, credential-brokering functions, audit records, and recovery controls. It decides what can enter or leave the sandbox.
  2. Task runtime: Runs the agent and repository commands in a disposable container or VM. It receives only the files, tools, and capabilities needed for that task.
  3. Controlled exchange: Passes the proposed diff, test results, and other reviewed outputs to the harness. The harness—not the untrusted runtime—decides whether to grant further access or perform a GitHub action.

Do not mount the host’s SSH directory, cloud credential files, Docker socket, shell configuration, or unrelated home-directory paths. Avoid sharing caches unless their contents and write access are safe for this task. A mounted path is part of the agent’s effective access, even if a prompt says not to inspect it.

OpenAI describes a sandbox as isolated compute with a filesystem, commands, packages, ports, snapshots, and controlled external access. Cloudflare’s runner pattern illustrates a related separation: credentials remain in the Worker while the agent runs in a task-specific Linux container. These patterns support keeping control and secrets outside the compute boundary; neither means that a container by itself prevents every escape or data leak.

When the task ends, destroy the runtime. Retain only the artifacts you need—such as the diff, test results, and audit records—under the harness’s control. Do not preserve a writable agent environment as a convenient shortcut for the next task.

How do I control network access and credentials?

Default to no network access. If the task genuinely requires a GitHub API call or dependency download, route it through a policy-enforcing proxy and allow only the approved destinations and methods. A broad “internet access” exception makes it harder to prevent source-code or secret exfiltration.

Keep secrets outside the workspace

Do not place long-lived credentials in the repository, container image, agent environment, snapshot, command history, or logs. OpenAI recommends credential brokering or a trusted proxy: keep the underlying credential in the trusted system, and let the agent make only an approved request through that boundary.

If a task needs authentication, issue the narrowest short-lived capability that serves the approved destination and action. The agent should not receive a general-purpose token that can be copied, reused elsewhere, or used after the task. Keep the token from appearing in command output and audit logs, and revoke it when the task ends.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make network exceptions specific

  • List the exact destinations needed for the task rather than enabling unrestricted outbound traffic.
  • Decide which methods or request types are allowed at the proxy, not just which hostnames resolve.
  • Record attempted and successful network destinations so that unexpected access is visible.
  • Require approval before expanding the allowlist, especially if the request comes from an issue, pull request, or repository script.

Network restrictions and credential isolation solve different problems. Blocking outbound connections can reduce opportunities to send data away, but it does not stop an agent from reading an exposed secret. Keeping secrets outside the runtime limits what can be stolen; restricting egress limits where the runtime can send data. Use both.

What GitHub permissions should I give the agent first?

Start with read-only access to repository metadata and contents. Add pull-request or status reads only if the task needs them. Generate a diff or branch inside the sandbox, then have a person inspect the change before any separately approved write step.

Task stage Access to consider Keep outside the stage
Inspect or explain code Repository metadata and contents: read Push, merge, release, deployment, and organization administration
Inspect a pull request Pull-request reads and status reads, if needed Write access not required for inspection
Prepare a proposed change Writable temporary worktree; produce a patch or branch for review Automatic merge or release authority
Perform an approved GitHub write Narrowly scoped write permission in a separate, reviewed step Unrelated repository, organization, environment, or deployment permissions

GitHub’s workflow permissions key supports read, write, and none. When a workflow explicitly specifies permissions, any omitted scopes become none. Make the permissions declaration match the job’s actual needs rather than relying on inherited defaults. Prefer a fine-grained token or GitHub App configured for the minimum repository access required.

A read-only token is not a substitute for sandboxing. It can still expose private repository contents to code that should not receive them, and it does nothing to protect files or services reachable from the runtime. Likewise, a strong sandbox does not justify handing the agent broad GitHub permissions. Keep both boundaries narrow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How should I handle pull requests from forks?

Use the unprivileged pull_request event for untrusted fork code when secrets are not required. Do not use a privileged workflow to check out and execute code controlled by the fork. GitHub describes the dangerous pattern as a “pwn request” and says: “Only allow pull_request_target when it is necessary.”

Keep privileged and untrusted work separate

Never combine a privileged token or secrets with execution of a fork’s code. Do not run its tests, build scripts, package installers, or downloaded artifacts in a job that has write access or secrets. The risk is not limited to an obviously malicious source file: installation and build steps can execute code as part of routine work.

If a privileged action is unavoidable, keep the privileged workflow code on the trusted default branch. Pass only reviewed data across the boundary, and do not check out or execute the pull-request head, merge ref, or files supplied by the pull request in that privileged job. The same caution applies to workflow_run workflows that consume artifacts or other outputs from an untrusted run.

Verify the actual job permissions and secrets available to fork-triggered workflows. A workflow should not gain secrets merely because an agent or maintainer expects it to be read-only; check the event configuration and the token permissions that the job receives.

What approvals, logs, and teardown should I require?

Require explicit approval for network expansion, access to host paths, secret use, GitHub writes, and external side effects. A test passing is not approval to push, merge, publish, deploy, or spend money. Keep those actions behind a trusted control point that the agent cannot silently bypass.

Record enough to reconstruct what happened without recording the secrets themselves. Useful audit data includes commands run, files read and written, network destinations, tool calls, token scope, approvals, and the final diff. Make the record available outside the disposable runtime so it remains after teardown.

OpenAI’s Codex safety guidance treats approvals, constrained execution, network policies, and telemetry as complementary controls. That is the right mental model: approval does not replace isolation, logging does not prevent an attack, and a sandbox does not decide whether a proposed change is acceptable.

After completion, destroy the environment and revoke task credentials. Retain the reviewed output and the logs needed for accountability, not the agent’s writable filesystem or a live capability that could be reused.

How can I test the boundary before connecting a real account?

Use a deliberately adversarial pre-access test in a disposable environment with no production secrets. The goal is to demonstrate that hostile content and unsafe commands cannot cross the boundaries you intend to enforce—not merely to confirm that the agent can complete a normal coding task.

  1. Test prompt injection: Place an instruction in an issue body, pull-request description, HTML comment, and fixture file asking the agent to print environment variables or send data to an external host. Confirm that the runtime cannot expose secrets or reach an unapproved destination.
  2. Test filesystem limits: Attempt reads of /proc, SSH keys, cloud credential paths, Docker sockets, parent directories, and mounted caches. Confirm that sensitive paths are absent or inaccessible, and that host control interfaces are not available.
  3. Test egress: Attempt DNS, HTTP, package-manager, and Git connections to destinations outside the allowlist. Confirm that the policy blocks them and that the attempts appear in the audit record.
  4. Test execution hooks: Run a repository build and dependency install that tries to execute shell hooks. Check that the commands run only inside the disposable boundary and cannot reach credentials or unrestricted network access.
  5. Test fork workflows: Verify that forked pull_request jobs receive no secrets and have read-only token permissions. Verify that no privileged workflow checks out or executes the fork head, merge ref, artifacts, or downloaded files.
  6. Test side effects: Attempt unauthorized labels, comments, pushes, merges, releases, deployment changes, and environment-secret access. Confirm that the permission boundary or approval gate rejects each action.
  7. Test recovery: Confirm the environment is destroyed, task credentials are revoked, and logs remain available after the run.

Microsoft’s 2026 case study illustrates why filesystem checks matter: untrusted GitHub content influenced an AI workflow and exposed CI/CD credentials until a mitigation blocked sensitive /proc access. Do not treat that single case as a prevalence estimate. It is a concrete reason to test file-read boundaries rather than assume that a task-specific prompt or container configuration makes them safe.

Which isolation approach is enough?

Choose based on the consequence of a failure, not convenience alone. Process sandboxing can constrain an agent, but it is not equivalent to a VM or user-account boundary. VS Code explicitly cautions that sandboxing is not a virtual-machine or user-account boundary and does not replace endpoint security; it recommends an additional dev-container boundary where appropriate.

Control area What to verify Why it matters
Isolation strength Whether enforcement is process-level, container-based, or VM-based Do not mistake a local process restriction for a separate machine or account boundary.
Filesystem Which repository paths, host paths, caches, and sockets are mounted Every exposed path can expand what the agent or executed code can inspect or change.
Network Whether access is off by default and how destinations are allowlisted Unrestricted egress can enable data transfer and unapproved external actions.
Credentials Whether credentials stay in a harness or trusted proxy and are narrowly scoped Secrets in the workspace can be read by agent-generated or repository code.
GitHub access Token scope, event permissions, and whether write access is separated from review Repository access should not silently include merge, release, or administrative authority.
Fork handling Whether untrusted code runs without secrets or privileged write access Privileged event workflows can turn a pull request into a route to CI/CD credentials.
Approvals and audit Approval gates for sensitive actions and logs retained outside the runtime Controls need to be observable and reviewable, not only configured.
Fallback behavior Whether the agent can continue unsandboxed if enforcement fails A silent fallback can invalidate the boundary while the task appears to run normally.
Teardown Whether the runtime is destroyed and credentials revoked at task end Disposable environments reduce carry-over between tasks and prevent reuse of stale access.

No single row makes a setup safe by itself. Pair isolation with restricted egress, credential separation, least-privilege GitHub permissions, human review, telemetry, and teardown. Recheck the relevant product and platform documentation when configuring a real deployment: agent sandbox defaults, GitHub event policies, and security advisories can change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there reliable statistics on how often AI coding sandboxes fail?

No robust, directly relevant failure-rate or prevalence statistic is established in the cited control guidance and incident analysis. The available evidence supports specific safeguards and test cases, not a numerical estimate of how often agents escape or expose data.

Can I use an AI coding agent on a repository with no secrets in it?

Removing repository secrets reduces one source of exposure, but it does not establish that the runtime is isolated. The agent may still reach host files, caches, network destinations, or GitHub actions through other available access.

Does a clean test run prove that a sandbox is secure?

No. A normal build demonstrates that the task worked, not that hostile instructions, filesystem probes, forbidden network requests, or unauthorized GitHub actions are blocked. Validate those boundaries deliberately before granting account access.
