Use two separate saves. Keep one clean file for the story, trophies or 100% completion, and use a second “playground” file for cheats. Save the clean file before entering any code, experiment in the spare file, and reload instead of saving again while unusual effects are active. This matters because Vice City still lets you walk into a safehouse cassette and save with cheats enabled, but a cheat can disable trophies on that file, make a mission unwinnable, preserve hostile pedestrian behavior, or cause a classic-PC save to load to a black screen.
The safest recovery order is prevention first, a copied save folder second, and Rockstar’s gta_vc.set repair procedure only for the original Windows release. The Definitive Edition uses different profile files, so do not assume that deleting the classic settings file will repair it.
What is the safest way to save after using Vice City cheats?
Save before the first code, then never overwrite that clean file during the cheat session. Load the spare file for experimentation, and when you are finished, quit or reload without confirming another cassette save. On a console, that means choosing a different in-game slot; on a PC, it also means copying the entire save folder somewhere else before you start.

- Trophies and achievements: on the Definitive Edition and console versions, entering a cheat locks them on that save file, according to Push Square (updated June 27, 2026) and Of Zen and Computing (October 28, 2026).
- Save integrity: some effects can be written into the save, and Rockstar documents a black-screen load problem when cheats were enabled while saving the original PC game.
Cheats do not universally delete saves or disable the cassette. The documented hazards are a black screen on load, persistent pedestrian behavior, mission interference and a trophy lock. Rockstar has not published a percentage or sample size for cheat-related save failures, so no reliable corruption rate can be given.
How do Vice City save points work?
Neither the 2002 original nor the normal save system in the Definitive Edition has a pause-menu save command. Progress is written when Tommy walks into the floating cassette inside a safehouse he owns. In the Definitive Edition, the cassette is also shown as a pink square on the map.
First save point
The Ocean View Hotel suite is free at the beginning of the game and is the first save location. It has no garage, so a vehicle left outside is not stored as a permanent personal car.

Buying properties and completing the required story steps unlocks more save points. How To Video Game lists seven purchasable safehouses, plus the Vercetti Estate after the story grants it to you. The commonly used early paid option, 3321 Vice Point, costs $2,500, according to that October 2026 guide.
Mission and time rules
- You cannot intentionally save during a mission. Finish or fail the mission first.
- Saving advances the in-game clock by six hours, a figure reported by Pro Game Guides (2021) and How To Video Game (2026). Plan around that jump if a shop, event or time-sensitive activity is open only at a particular hour.
- The original 2002 game has no autosave. The Definitive Edition can occasionally autosave during a mission, as reported by GosuNoob (November 10, 2021), but that is an extra safety net rather than a replacement for the cassette.
A practical routine is to save immediately before a long mission. If the mission fails, you lose that attempt instead of an hour of unrelated progress.
How should I prepare a clean save before entering a cheat?
- Complete any current activity. Leave the mission, cutscene or scripted sequence so the game is in ordinary free roam.
- Visit an owned safehouse. Walk into its cassette and wait for the save to finish. Do not rely on a street vehicle or a pause-menu option.
- Use a separate slot. Keep the clean story or completion file untouched. Give the playground file a different slot number.
- On PC, copy the folder. Close the game and copy the complete user-files or Definitive Edition Profiles folder to another drive or a clearly named backup folder.
- Enter cheats only after the backup exists. If a code behaves unexpectedly, quit without saving and return to the clean file.
On a console with limited slots, the clean file is more important than having several experimental files. Rotate playground saves rather than overwriting the only clean copy.

How do I enter cheats without creating a GTA 5-style mistake?
Enter codes during live gameplay. Vice City does not use GTA 5’s phone-dial or tilde-console method, and classic Vice City has no built-in cheat menu.
Original and most PC versions
Type the phrase while Tommy is moving around. No text box and no tilde key are required. Some guides report that typing while paused works, while others report that PC pause input is ignored; live gameplay is the reliable common instruction. A confirmation message is also version-dependent, so treat the actual effect—not a pop-up—as the check that the code was accepted.
Console Definitive Edition
Use the controller sequence during gameplay. Set the control layout to Classic first; Of Zen and Computing reports that sequences can be ignored under the 2021 modern layout.
Mobile
Newer mobile builds accept phrases through an on-screen or Bluetooth keyboard. Older or Netflix builds may expose a separate code menu. A triple-tap of the analog stick is described as a mobile-only shortcut and does not work on home consoles.
Definitive Edition removed at least some original codes. Push Square and Of Zen and Computing identify WHEELSAREALLINEED (Invisible Cars) as unavailable there; Push Square also marks CHICKSWITHGUNS (Female Pedestrians Are Armed) as not working in that edition.
Which Vice City cheats can be turned off?
Most cheats are session effects that disappear when the game is closed, and many guides say entering the same code again toggles them off. That behavior is not identical on every platform, and the presence or absence of a confirmation message is not a dependable test.

Codes with no safe in-session off switch
Oyungunlugu’s October 25, 2026 code archive flags pedestrian behavior as save-persistent. These PC phrases—and their equivalent controller sequences—should be treated as irreversible for the current session:
FIGHTFIGHTFIGHT— pedestrians riot.NOBODYLIKESME— pedestrians attack Tommy.OURGODGIVENRIGHTTOBEARARMS— pedestrians carry weapons.
That archive also warns that outfit or skin codes may not be undoable in the current session. If one of these effects is active, quit without saving or load a file made before the code. Re-entering a phrase is not a recovery plan.
Why traffic and pedestrian effects are risky
World-behavior cheats can affect encounters and mission scripting rather than merely adding weapons or changing weather. How To Video Game notes that pedestrian and traffic states can linger, and that a code used during a mission can make the objective unwinnable. Use a weapon or vehicle code only in the playground file and return to ordinary free roam before attempting story work.

Do cheats disable trophies, achievements or 100% completion?
On the Definitive Edition and console versions, treat the save as permanently ineligible for trophies and achievements once a cheat has been entered. Push Square advises entering cheats on a new save file so the clean file remains usable for the Platinum, while Of Zen and Computing states that the lock occurs the moment a cheat is active.
This is separate from whether the cassette still saves. 91mobiles (October 29, 2026) distinguishes the two: cheats do not permanently block the act of saving, but saving with active cheats is strongly discouraged because effects can persist or break missions. Turning a code off does not restore the trophy status of a file already marked by the game.
If 100% completion matters, finish the story and completion tasks on the untouched file. Keep all experimentation on the second file, even if the code appears harmless.

What should I do if a classic PC save loads to a black screen?
Rockstar Games Customer Support documents this problem for the original Windows version when cheats were used and enabled while saving. The article was last updated February 13, 2024. Its workaround applies to the classic PC user-files path, not automatically to the Definitive Edition.
- Open
My DocumentsGTA Vice City User files. - Delete the
gta_vc.setfile. Do not delete the individual save files. - Run the game and do not change settings at this point.
- Start a new game. Do not try to load the damaged save from the opening screen.
- After the new game starts, press Esc, choose Start new game, then choose Load Game and try the existing save.
If the save still fails, restore the copied user-files folder and keep the broken file for separate troubleshooting. Rockstar’s article does not confirm that deleting gta_vc.set repairs a Definitive Edition profile, so do not apply the classic procedure to that edition as if it were an official fix.
Where are Vice City save files stored on PC and mobile?
Close the game before replacing or restoring files. Keep an untouched backup, and preserve the naming format already present in the folder. GTASpot gives SGTA50000 as an example of a Definitive Edition filename.

Search Documents for a folder named GTA Vice City Definitive Edition and its Profiles<profile ID> directory. GTASnP and GTASpot report slightly different Rockstar Launcher paths; GTASpot also mentions a SaveGames subfolder in one FAQ. |
Because Definitive Edition folder names vary by launcher and profile, searching your Documents folder for “GTA Vice City” is safer than typing one path from memory. Back up the entire Profiles folder rather than only one file so the profile metadata stays together.
Can a cheat save be repaired by simply turning the cheat off?
Only the ordinary session cheats have a reasonable chance of clearing when the same code is entered again or the game is restarted. A code that changes pedestrian behavior, outfit state or mission conditions should be considered unsafe until you reload a pre-cheat file.

What is the Cherry Poppers save glitch?
The Cherry Poppers Ice Cream Company issue is a separate historical corruption risk, not a normal consequence of cheating. ScreenRant reported on December 25, 2020 that saving at the cassette appearing after buying the company on the original PS2 release had a very strong chance of corrupting the save. There was no day-one patch for that launch version.

Later ports, reprints and other-console versions fixed the problem, and the glitch has generally been considered fixed for years. If you are using an unpatched original copy, avoid that cassette and save at another owned property instead. Keeping a second file is still the safest protection.
How many cheat codes does Vice City have?
The total depends on platform and on whether a list counts controller combinations separately from text phrases. Of Zen and Computing lists 60 codes for PC and mobile, including 53 with controller combinations and seven text-only codes. Oyungunlugu’s 2026 archive lists 43 codes and specifically flags pedestrian codes for save persistence, so code counts should not be treated as a single universal official number.
There is no unlimited-money cheat on any platform, according to Of Zen and Computing. Be cautious with lists that import instructions from later Grand Theft Auto games; Vice City does not use GTA 5 phone dialing or a tilde console.

Not on the save file that was marked after the cheat was entered. Use a clean slot for trophy progress; disabling a session effect does not restore that file’s eligibility.

A cassette save advances Vice City time by six in-game hours. That is normal behavior, so schedule time-sensitive activities before saving if the change would make you miss them.
Will Vice City autosave protect my cheat session?
Only the Definitive Edition is reported to autosave occasionally, including during some missions. It is not a dependable substitute for a deliberate cassette save, and the original 2002 release has no autosave.
