To clone a WordPress site for agency work, create a separate copy with your host’s clone or staging tool when available; otherwise use a migration plugin that can copy the files and database you need. Before you start, confirm the destination and plan allowance, make a restorable backup, and decide whether the copy is for testing, a new installation, or a migration. After cloning, block indexing, stop outgoing email and automated jobs, check URLs and integrations, and test the copy without touching production. Treat any later database push as a potentially destructive overwrite: it can replace newer users, orders, and content on the live site.
What does it mean to clone a WordPress site?
A clone is a second WordPress installation made from an existing site’s files and database. It is usually created on the same host for development, client review, troubleshooting, or a temporary migration step. The copy is not automatically a backup and is not necessarily synchronized with the source after creation.
Four terms are easy to confuse:
- Clone: creates another installation from the source.
- Staging: a separated copy intended for testing before changes reach the public site.
- Migration: moves a site to a different host, server, domain, or URL.
- Sync or push/pull: transfers files, media, themes, plugins, or database data between two existing environments.
That distinction determines the safest procedure. A test copy can be disposable; a migration requires domain and DNS planning; and a production push requires a current backup and an inventory of data created on the live site since the copy was made.

Use a same-host clone for a separate installation
Select a same-host clone when you need another complete WordPress site for a client handoff, a parallel build, debugging, or a temporary demonstration. Give it a distinct temporary domain or staging URL and keep its credentials separate from production.
Use staging for development and approval
Staging is appropriate when developers need to test a theme, plugin, PHP change, or redesign without exposing unfinished work. It should be isolated from search engines, customers, payment actions, social publishing, and routine email.
Use migration for a new host or domain
A migration is more than a file copy. It also requires destination configuration, URL replacement, DNS or domain cutover, SSL, redirects, and a final content check. Keep the original site available until the new installation has been verified.

A push copies from staging or development toward production; a pull copies production toward a non-live environment. Decide whether files, media, themes, plugins, and the database are included. A full database transfer is materially different from moving a few files.
What should you check before cloning?
Hosting entitlements and destination limits determine whether the operation is available and whether it consumes a billable site, storage, visits, or bandwidth.
- Confirm that your plan includes cloning or staging and whether an unused site slot is required.
- Check whether the destination is a new site, a premium staging environment, or an existing environment that will be overwritten.
- Check storage, visit, bandwidth, and environment limits for the extra copy.
- Confirm the server region and PHP, database, and WordPress compatibility needed by the project.
- For multisite, verify network support separately; a tool that clones a single site may not reproduce network-level settings.
- Record the source URL, destination URL, administrator accounts, DNS status, and the time of the last production backup.
For example, Kinsta documents cloning as requiring a Multiple-site plan with an available site slot, or a Premium Staging Environment. Its documented flow is in MyKinsta’s clone guide. The documentation estimates 10–20 minutes for a typical clone depending on site size; that is a vendor estimate, not an independent performance benchmark.
Availability differs by provider. WPMU DEV’s documentation describes the dashboard clone tool for dedicated hosting and says availability differs for unlimited hosting; check the applicable hosting type in its hosting documentation.

How do you back up a site before cloning?
Make sure you can restore both the database and files before creating or deploying a copy. A clone is not a substitute for a recovery point because it may inherit configuration problems and may later be deleted.

- Run a complete database and file backup using your host’s backup system or an established backup process.
- Verify that the backup completed and that you know where the restore control is.
- For stores, membership sites, or busy publishers, record orders, users, comments, form submissions, and content created after the intended staging snapshot.
- Write down active integrations, webhook endpoints, API keys, cron tasks, payment settings, and email providers that must not run from the clone.
- Do not delete the backup until the copy has been tested and any production deployment has been verified.
If the planned operation will replace the production database, take another production backup immediately before that operation. A backup made when staging was created does not protect orders or users added afterward.
How do you clone a site with a host dashboard?
Host-native tools are usually the simplest route because they know the server layout and can provide support, but their controls and eligibility differ. Select the provider’s documented source environment and destination carefully.
Kinsta: create a complete site clone
Kinsta’s documented clone copies the complete site, including database and files. The steps are:
- Open MyKinsta → Sites → Add site.
- Choose Create new site → Clone.
- Select the source site and choose its Live or Staging environment.
- Choose the destination details and start the clone.
- Wait for the operation to finish, then open the destination URL and test it before sharing it with a client.
Kinsta notes that hardcoded URLs may need updating after the copy. Review theme and plugin settings, perform a careful search-and-replace where necessary, and clear caches. A clone counts against applicable site, visit, and bandwidth allowances. Also disable social-sharing plugins on the copy if they could publish duplicate posts or URLs. These cautions and the interface path are described in the Kinsta clone documentation.
WordPress.com: create and synchronize a staging site
WordPress.com describes staging as a decoupled copy. Its documented copy can include posts, pages, themes, plugins, uploads, users, configuration options, API keys, and other database data. Search engines are blocked by default unless a custom robots.txt overrides that behavior. Review the staging instructions for the current interface and plan requirements.
WordPress.com also provides staging-to-production synchronization. The sync guide says files and database content can be copied, but including the database synchronizes all database content together rather than allowing individual posts or pages to be selected. The feature is documented as available on Business and Commerce plans, with activation required for Business. Its guide is at Sync staging and production.
WooCommerce data deserves special care: the staging copy can include customers, products, and orders. A later database sync can therefore overwrite or duplicate live commerce data if the production changes are not reconciled first.

Its documentation warns that copying a database to production rewrites the production database with the source environment’s contents. New orders or users created on production can be lost. For selective content, use WordPress Export and Import tools instead. If a full live-database replacement is unavoidable, export new production content first and reimport it after the copy.
WPMU DEV: clone a new installation
WPMU DEV describes a clone as a new WordPress installation containing themes, plugins, content, settings, and database data. The documented clone excludes domains, SFTP or SSH users, and staging configuration. Those exclusions mean you must configure access and domain details on the destination rather than assuming they came across. Confirm hosting-type eligibility in the WPMU DEV hosting documentation.
How can you clone with a WordPress plugin?
A plugin is useful when the host lacks a suitable tool, when you need a cross-host migration, or when you need more selective control over tables and folders. Choose a maintained tool, test it on a non-critical site, and ensure the destination has enough disk space and database capacity.
Recommended Free Tools
WP STAGING’s product documentation describes same-server cloning, migration to another host, domain changes, selected-change pushes, and downloadable local copies. It says the tool copies files and database data and rewrites URLs and paths. Its options include selecting database tables and folders, using a separate table prefix, discouraging search engines, and disabling email or background jobs. These are vendor-described capabilities, not an independent test; review the current details at WP STAGING’s clone and migration documentation.
- Install the plugin on the source or use the provider’s documented migration method.
- Choose a destination URL or server and confirm the available disk space.
- Select the files, folders, and database tables required for the project; do not omit a table that a theme or plugin needs.
- Enable URL and path rewriting when changing domains, and use a separate table prefix if the destination shares a database.
- Enable search-engine discouragement and disable email, scheduled jobs, payment actions, and other outbound integrations where the plugin supports those controls.
- Run the copy, record any warnings, and test the destination before changing DNS or deleting the source.
How do you isolate the clone from customers and search engines?
Isolation prevents a test copy from publishing duplicate content, sending real messages, charging a card, or running the same scheduled task as production.
- Indexing: enable the host or WordPress setting that discourages search engines, verify the staging robots response, and protect the site with authentication when possible.
- Email: disable outbound mail or route it to an agency-owned test mailbox. Test forms without sending messages to customers.
- Payments: use sandbox credentials and disable payment gateways, subscriptions, and webhooks that can charge or update live records.
- Scheduled jobs: pause WP-Cron tasks, queue workers, feeds, backups, and imports that should run only once in production.
- Social publishing: deactivate social-sharing and auto-publishing plugins so a cloned post is not distributed as new content.
- Third-party services: replace or revoke API keys for CRM, analytics, advertising, shipping, SMS, and chat systems as appropriate.
- Access: review administrator accounts and remove temporary users when the client review ends.
A staging environment can differ from production in cache settings and available resources. Kinsta notes that staging environments are separate for development and testing and may sleep after inactivity; its staging documentation explains those differences.
What should you test after the copy finishes?
Test the clone as a site, not merely as a successful file-transfer message. Keep the source open in another browser window so you can spot changes that appear in the wrong environment.

- Sign in to the destination administrator account and confirm the expected users and roles.
- Open the home page, representative posts, pages, categories, menus, search, media attachments, and downloadable files.
- Submit contact, login, password-reset, and other forms using test addresses; confirm that no real customer receives a message.
- Check internal links, canonical tags, redirects, image URLs, CSS, JavaScript, and embedded media for the destination URL.
- Review theme and plugin settings for hardcoded production domains, API endpoints, license keys, webhook URLs, and serialized values.
- Clear page, object, CDN, and plugin caches, then retest in a private browser window.
- Check scheduled tasks and logs to confirm that imports, publishing, payment callbacks, and backups are not running against production services.
- Verify that the source site’s content, users, orders, and settings remain unchanged.
- Run a performance and error check appropriate to the project, including PHP errors, failed requests, broken images, and redirect loops.
URL rewriting is not guaranteed to catch every hardcoded value. Search plugin and theme configuration, serialized data, custom fields, widgets, and JavaScript files as well as ordinary post content. Take a new backup after the destination passes acceptance testing.

How do you push changes from staging to production safely?
Prefer selective deployment when production continues receiving orders, users, comments, or editorial updates. A full database push should be treated as a controlled replacement, not a routine “publish” button.
For files and code
Deploy only the tested theme, plugin, media, or configuration files required for the change. Confirm version compatibility and keep a rollback archive. Avoid replacing uploads or configuration files that contain newer production data unless that is intentional.
For content
Use WordPress Export and Import tools or the host’s selective content feature when only posts, pages, or media need to move. Confirm IDs, taxonomies, authors, and image references after import.
For a complete database replacement
- Freeze or document production activity during the change window.
- Take a fresh, restorable production backup.
- List orders, users, comments, forms, and content created on production since staging was copied.
- Compare those records with the staging database and decide how they will be preserved.
- Perform the replacement using the host’s documented push or sync control.
- Reimport or manually reconcile new production records where the workflow permits.
- Test login, checkout, forms, email, redirects, and administrative access immediately afterward.
WP Engine states: “We typically do not recommend copying a database to a production environment because the database will be rewritten entirely with the staging or development environment contents.” WordPress.com similarly warns: “If you include the database, all database content syncs together.” Those warnings explain why a database push can lose newer live data even when the staging site itself looks correct.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do the main cloning approaches compare?
| Approach | Eligibility and destination | Copy control | Main safeguards and risks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Host-native clone | Depends on the host plan, site slots, staging limits, and environment type | Often a complete files-and-database copy; controls vary | Convenient and supported, but may consume site, visit, storage, or bandwidth allowances |
| Host staging and sync | Usually an existing staging/live pair; plan activation may be required | Some tools offer files, media, themes, plugins, and database choices; database scope may be all-or-nothing | Strong separation, but a database sync can overwrite users, orders, and content |
| Migration plugin | Same host, another host, another domain, or a downloadable local copy, depending on the tool | May allow table and folder selection, URL rewriting, separate prefixes, and optional job/email controls | More destination control and host independence; requires careful capacity, credential, and rewrite checks |
| Manual selective deployment | Any environment where you can access WordPress files and content tools | Best for limited files or exported content rather than a full installation | Reduces database overwrite risk but requires deliberate dependency and media checks |
No documented option establishes an overall best host or plugin. Base the decision on plan eligibility, same-host versus cross-host needs, full versus selective control, URL handling, isolation features, multisite support, restore procedures, and the consequences of replacing production data.
What problems commonly occur after cloning?
The clone redirects to the live domain
Check the site URL and home URL, hardcoded theme and plugin values, serialized options, canonical tags, redirects, and cache layers. Clear every cache after correcting the destination URL.
Images or styles are missing
Inspect uploads, permissions, CDN origins, mixed-content URLs, and rewritten paths. Confirm that the required folders and database tables were included in a selective copy.
Emails or scheduled actions run unexpectedly
Disable outbound mail, WP-Cron tasks, queue workers, webhooks, and auto-publishing integrations on the clone. Replace production credentials with sandbox or test credentials.

A production push removed recent records
Stop further writes, restore the pre-deployment backup if necessary, and compare the staging and production exports. Recover orders, users, or content created after the staging snapshot before attempting another deployment.
The clone is not visible in search
That is normally desirable for staging. Check the site’s indexing setting and robots response before launch; remove staging protection only after the intended domain and redirects are active.
The destination uses different resources
Test under realistic traffic and review cache, PHP memory, database limits, and background workers. A staging environment may have different resources or cache behavior from production, so passing a visual test does not prove production capacity.

- Classify the job as clone, staging, migration, or sync/push.
- Confirm plan eligibility, destination, slots, storage, visits, bandwidth, and multisite requirements.
- Make and verify a restorable files-and-database backup.
- Record live orders, users, content, integrations, and scheduled tasks.
- Create the copy with a distinct URL and the smallest appropriate data scope.
- Block indexing and isolate email, payments, cron, social publishing, and third-party APIs.
- Check URLs, serialized settings, links, media, forms, redirects, caches, users, and logs.
- Use selective deployment whenever live data is changing.
- Before any database push, back up production and reconcile newer records.
- Keep the rollback backup and remove temporary copies only after unique work is preserved.
For agency operations, the safest default is a host-native staging or clone for convenience, followed by deliberate isolation and testing. Use a plugin when selective tables, cross-host migration, or destination independence matters. In every case, treat the live database as the authoritative, changing system and never overwrite it without a recovery plan.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a cloned WordPress site a reliable backup by itself?
No. A clone is another working installation and may share the same configuration mistakes, credentials, or integrations as the source. Keep an independently restorable backup and test its recovery process.
Can I clone only a few WordPress posts or pages?
Some staging tools synchronize the database as a whole, so they cannot safely select individual records. For a small content move, use WordPress Export and Import or a tool that explicitly supports selective tables and content.
Should a WooCommerce store be cloned with its database?
Only with a clear data plan. Customers, products, and orders can be copied to staging, while a later database sync can overwrite newer live transactions; use sandbox payment credentials and preserve production records before any replacement.
Why does a staging copy sometimes behave differently from the live site?
Hosts can assign staging different cache settings, resources, or sleep behavior. Validate critical features on production-like infrastructure and do not treat a successful staging page load as a capacity guarantee.
