Run every untrusted AI-agent workload in a separate sandbox, and choose a VM-backed runtime when the code may be adversarial or needs a full Linux kernel. Kata Containers or another microVM backend gives the agent a dedicated guest kernel behind hardware virtualization. gVisor is a lighter alternative when a userspace kernel can support the workload and fast startup matters. In either case, isolation is only as strong as the files, capabilities, credentials, devices and network paths you expose.
This guide shows how to choose the runtime, limit host access, broker secrets, isolate tenants, and operate the sandboxes safely for coding agents, browser automation and package installation.
What does it mean to run an AI agent in an isolated microVM?
An isolated microVM gives an agent its own virtual machine boundary and guest Linux kernel instead of placing its generated code directly in the host kernel’s process space. The virtual machine monitor mediates hardware access, while the sandbox policy controls the smaller set of files, devices, credentials and network routes that the guest can use.

A coding prompt that looks harmless can therefore become arbitrary code execution. A separate sandbox limits the blast radius if the model, a dependency or a hostile input is compromised.

MicroVM path: a guest kernel and hardware boundary
Google Cloud describes its sandbox model as each Pod running inside its own microVM, isolated from other Pods and the host. Kata Containers exposes a similar design through a Kubernetes RuntimeClass and compatible container runtimes. The guest kernel is separate from the host kernel, so a kernel exploit in the workload does not automatically provide the same access it would have in a conventional shared-kernel container.
gVisor path: a userspace kernel, not a full VM
gVisor uses a userspace Sentry kernel and a Gofer process to intercept or service system calls outside the host kernel. Namespaces and Linux capabilities add defense in depth. It provides a VM-like separation model with a different compatibility and performance profile, but it is not a full virtual machine with a dedicated guest kernel.
Orchestration choices
Kubernetes Agent Sandbox supplies a common API for short-lived code execution, coding agents, computer-use agents and CI/CD workloads, with gVisor and Kata backends. For local development, Docker Sandboxes place agents in microVMs and mediate workspace files, network access, credentials, Docker Engine and MCP access. These products are integration layers; they do not remove the need to design least-privilege policies.
Should I choose a microVM, gVisor, or another VMM?
Choose a microVM when the agent is adversarial, drives a browser, executes arbitrary generated code without supervision, expects a full Linux kernel, or makes many low-level system calls. Choose gVisor when the runtime is compatible and rapid startup plus dynamic resource allocation are more important than full-kernel compatibility. Firecracker or another microVM monitor can be used where your platform supports it; apply the same guest, network and credential controls.
| Runtime approach | Kernel boundary | Startup documented by Google Cloud (2026) | Documented resource overhead | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| gVisor | Userspace Sentry kernel and Gofer mediate system calls; the host kernel remains underneath | Less than 200 ms | Not stated in the cited comparison | Python, Node.js, Java, Rust, PHP or Go workloads that fit its syscall and device model and need fast starts |
| MicroVM (including Kata-backed sandboxes) | Dedicated guest Linux kernel behind hardware virtualization | Approximately one to two seconds | 250 mCPU and 130 MiB of memory per Pod in the cited GKE documentation | Unsandboxed code generation, browser automation, full-kernel requirements and hostile workloads |
The timing and overhead figures are GKE documentation values, not universal benchmarks. They vary with image size, node type, storage, runtime configuration and workload. Measure your own cold starts, steady-state CPU and memory, and queueing behavior before setting service-level objectives.
Use compatibility as a gate, not an afterthought
List the system calls, devices, kernel modules, filesystem features and language runtimes your agent needs. A package that assumes an uncommon syscall, nested virtualization, a special device or a particular kernel behavior may fail under gVisor. Test the complete agent image, including browser, package manager and helper binaries, rather than testing only a minimal script.

Keep mutually distrusting tenants apart
gVisor recommends separate sandboxes for different customer workloads because a compromise inside one sandbox can still reach everything that sandbox can access. A microVM does not make shared mounts, shared service accounts or a flat network safe. Place mutually distrusting tenants in separate sandbox instances and, where required, separate nodes, namespaces, storage paths and credentials.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →How do I define the threat model before deployment?
Write down what the agent can receive, execute and reach before choosing a runtime. Your threat model determines whether a shared-kernel container is acceptable or whether a guest kernel and stronger tenant boundary are necessary.
- Generated code: assume the model can emit arbitrary shell commands, native binaries and scripts, even when the prompt requests a limited task.
- Internet-loaded packages: treat package installation, post-install hooks and downloaded archives as untrusted code.
- Browser automation: include malicious web pages, downloads, credential prompts and browser escape bugs in the threat model.
- Hostile inputs: documents, repositories, pull requests, images and tool responses can contain payloads designed to influence the agent or exploit a parser.
- Tenant separation: decide whether two users, projects or customers may ever share a sandbox, filesystem, network identity or service account.
- Kernel and device needs: record whether the agent needs a full Linux kernel, special devices, GPU or TPU access, nested containers, or low-level networking.
- Availability goals: determine whether a one-to-two-second microVM start is acceptable or whether sub-200-millisecond starts are essential.
Document the assets at risk—source repositories, signing keys, cloud tokens, internal APIs, customer data and the host control plane—and define the maximum damage if one run is fully compromised.
How do I deploy an agent in a microVM-backed sandbox?
Use a repeatable sequence that makes every host integration explicit. The following steps apply to Kubernetes-based Kata or Agent Sandbox deployments and to local microVM workflows with equivalent controls.
- Select the runtime class. Configure a Kata or other microVM backend for hostile or full-kernel workloads. Select gVisor when compatibility testing passes and lower startup overhead is important. In Kubernetes, bind the workload to the intended
RuntimeClassrather than relying on the cluster default. - Build a minimal image. Start with only the language runtime, agent code and tools required for the job. Pin operating-system packages, language dependencies and browser versions. Remove compilers, package managers and debugging tools from production images unless the task genuinely needs them; if installation is required, use a disposable writable layer and destroy it after the run.
- Do not pass host sockets or broad host paths. Never mount the host Docker socket, container runtime socket, Kubernetes credentials, host filesystem or cloud metadata endpoint into an untrusted workload. A socket is an API with the authority of the service behind it, not a harmless file.
- Drop privilege. Run as a non-root user where feasible, drop all Linux capabilities and add back only a capability that a tested operation demonstrably requires. Disable privilege escalation, apply seccomp and namespace controls, and prevent set-user-ID or set-group-ID transitions in the image and runtime policy.
- Minimize workspace exposure. Give the agent only the files needed for the current task. A read-only clone or mountless mode is safer for local work. If a direct read-write mount is used, changes are live on the mounted host or shared workspace; use a disposable copy, snapshot or overlay when edits must be retained without exposing the original.
- Broker credentials. Do not place long-lived API keys, cloud credentials or source-control tokens in environment variables or image layers. Use a broker that issues narrowly scoped, short-lived credentials for a specific operation, and return only the result the agent needs. Ensure the broker itself is reachable only through an authenticated, policy-checked channel.
- Deny egress by default. Start with no outbound network access. Add explicit allowlists for package registries, model APIs and required internal services, including ports, DNS behavior and destination identities. Block access to private address ranges, node-local services and metadata endpoints unless a documented workflow requires them.
- Separate workloads. Create a new sandbox for each mutually distrusting run or tenant. Avoid reusing a warm sandbox after it has handled untrusted code unless the runtime can reset its filesystem, processes, credentials and network identity to a verified clean state.
- Record and destroy. Log the image digest, runtime and guest-kernel versions, policy decisions, lifecycle events, network requests, file access and violations. At completion, revoke temporary credentials, delete writable state and destroy the sandbox rather than merely stopping the agent process.
What to configure inside the guest
The guest kernel is not a reason to relax ordinary container hardening. Use read-only system files where possible, a small writable temporary directory, resource limits for CPU, memory, processes, file descriptors and disk, and a time limit for every agent run. Disable unnecessary device nodes and prevent access to host-provided devices. Keep package caches and browser profiles inside the disposable guest filesystem unless they have been scanned and intentionally exported.

What to configure at the cluster or host layer
Restrict who can create or alter RuntimeClass objects, sandbox policies, network policies and credential brokers. Separate sandbox nodes from control-plane components when the risk warrants it. Patch the VMM, guest kernel, runtime, host kernel and base images on a defined schedule, and rebuild images from pinned sources so that a compromised build artifact cannot silently persist.

How do I isolate browsers and package installation?
Put the browser and package manager in the same disposable sandbox as the agent, or in a separately governed sandbox connected through a narrow protocol. Never let a browser process share the host profile, host downloads directory, desktop session, SSH agent or password store.
Browser automation
Use a dedicated non-root browser profile with no saved credentials. Restrict downloads to a temporary directory, cap file size and execution permissions, and scan or transform files before exporting them. Network policy should allow only the sites and APIs needed for the task; a browser that can reach an internal administrative endpoint can turn a web prompt into an internal attack path.
Package installation
Prefer a curated internal mirror or allowlisted registry, verify signatures or hashes where your ecosystem supports them, and record the exact package versions installed. Run installation in a disposable writable layer, deny post-install network access unless required, and do not copy build caches or generated binaries back to the host without inspection. If the agent only needs a known dependency set, bake it into an immutable image instead of granting package-manager access at runtime.
Recommended Free Tools
How do I share files, Docker and MCP tools safely?
Treat every integration as a trust boundary. A file mount, Docker API, model endpoint or MCP server can grant more authority than the code sandbox itself.
Workspace files
Export an explicit artifact directory rather than mounting an entire home directory or repository parent. Use read-only input plus a separate output directory, enforce ownership and size limits, and inspect generated scripts, binaries and configuration files before they leave the sandbox.
Docker and container APIs
Giving an agent access to a Docker Engine or container-runtime socket can allow it to create privileged containers, mount host paths or escape the intended policy. If the workflow must build images, use a dedicated builder service with an API that exposes only the required build operation and runs in its own isolated environment.

MCP and local tools
Docker warns that local MCP servers run on the host and should be treated as trusted integrations. Do not connect an untrusted agent directly to a host MCP server. Place a proxy in between, expose only selected methods, validate arguments, redact secrets and require explicit approval for operations that modify files, send messages or access production systems.
What network policy should an untrusted agent use?
Default-deny egress is the safest starting point; add destinations one function at a time. Separate DNS policy from IP policy so that resolving a permitted name cannot become a route to an unapproved private address.
- Allow only the package registries, model APIs and internal services named in the task.
- Block node, control-plane and cloud-metadata addresses.
- Use distinct service identities for package downloads, model calls and artifact uploads.
- Set request, response-size and connection-time limits to prevent covert channels and resource exhaustion.
- Log destination, identity, decision and byte counts, and alert on denied requests that indicate probing.
Remember that network isolation does not replace tenant isolation. A sandbox that can reach a shared database, object store or internal API can still affect other customers even when the guest kernel boundary holds.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should I observe, test and recover the sandboxes?
Operate isolation as a continuously tested control, not a one-time configuration. Before production, run adversarial staging workloads that attempt prohibited filesystem access, capability use, namespace changes, metadata access, unauthorized egress, credential reuse and cross-tenant reads. The available data reports no independent escape-test results, so your own evidence must establish whether the policy behaves as intended.
Minimum telemetry
- Sandbox creation, assignment, restart and destruction events.
- Image digest, host, VMM, runtime, guest-kernel and policy versions.
- Process launches, denied capabilities, seccomp decisions and resource-limit violations.
- File reads and writes at the host boundary, exported artifacts and mount changes.
- Network requests, DNS answers, denied destinations and credential-broker calls.
- Agent prompts, tool invocations and approval decisions, with secrets redacted.
Incident response
If a run behaves unexpectedly, revoke its brokered credentials first, cut its network identity, preserve logs and a forensic snapshot where policy permits, then destroy the sandbox. Rotate any secret that may have been exposed and inspect exported artifacts before allowing them into a build, repository or production system. Rebuild from a patched guest kernel, VMM and image rather than resuming a stopped instance.
What residual risks remain after microVM isolation?
MicroVMs reduce the impact of a compromise but do not make arbitrary code safe. Kata documentation notes that isolation strengthens multi-tenancy but does not guarantee it without network, storage and control-plane isolation. The sandbox still has every permission you grant through mounts, credentials, devices and reachable services.

gVisor does not protect against exploits in higher-level components before the sandbox, Spectre-style CPU side channels or compromise of the workload itself. A guest-kernel boundary also cannot correct a malicious model response that uses an approved API to delete data or send a legitimate but harmful request. Apply authorization, validation, rate limits and human approval at those APIs.
Plan for VMM, guest-kernel, host-kernel, runtime, browser and dependency vulnerabilities. Keep versions current, subscribe to security advisories, test upgrades in staging and maintain a rollback path. Hardware side-channel resistance, confidential computing and specialized accelerator isolation require separate design work; do not infer those properties from the word “microVM.”
What is a practical reference architecture?
A robust design has an untrusted agent in a per-run microVM, a read-only input snapshot, a disposable writable workspace, default-deny egress, a credential broker, and an artifact scanner outside the sandbox. Kubernetes schedules the workload through a constrained RuntimeClass; Agent Sandbox can provide the lifecycle API; network policy limits destinations; and centralized logging records every boundary decision.
For compatible, latency-sensitive jobs, substitute gVisor while retaining the same least-privilege mounts, capability drops, credential brokering, egress controls, tenant separation and telemetry. For local development, Docker Sandboxes can provide the microVM boundary, but host MCP servers, Docker Engine access and workspace mounts must still be explicitly mediated. The security result comes from the complete chain of controls, not from the runtime label alone.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AI coding agent run in a microVM without internet access?
Yes. Build the image with the required toolchains and dependencies, then run with egress denied. If a task needs a model API or package registry, route only that traffic through an allowlist or a broker and keep source, credentials and artifacts on separate policy-controlled paths.
Do microVMs stop an agent from stealing secrets already mounted in the sandbox?
No. A microVM protects the host boundary, not data you deliberately place inside it. Use short-lived, task-scoped credentials, mount only the minimum files, redact tool responses and revoke credentials when the run ends.
How much slower are microVM sandboxes than gVisor?
Google Cloud’s 2026 comparison documents gVisor startup at less than 200 milliseconds and microVM startup at approximately one to two seconds, with 250 mCPU and 130 MiB of memory per Pod listed for its microVM implementation. Those are GKE documentation figures, so benchmark your image, node type and workload before assuming the same numbers elsewhere.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should I reuse a warm sandbox to reduce latency?
Reuse is safe only when the platform can provably reset processes, writable state, credentials, mounts and network identity between tenants. Otherwise, destroy the sandbox after each mutually distrusting run; a faster start is not worth carrying an earlier compromise into the next job.
