Yes. You can host Portainer on a Linux VPS as Docker containers, then use its web interface to manage Docker environments. You need a working Docker installation and sudo access; Portainer Server uses TCP 9443 for its HTTPS interface and API. Keep its data on persistent storage, restrict who can reach the interface, and replace the default self-signed certificate before making it publicly accessible.
What does hosting Portainer on a VPS involve?
Portainer is a management interface for container environments. On a VPS, Portainer Server itself runs in a Docker container; it does not replace Docker. Docker must already be installed and running before you deploy Portainer. You then access Portainer’s web interface over HTTPS and use it to administer the environment connected to the server.
The distinction matters: a VPS is the machine that hosts Docker and Portainer, while Portainer is the management layer. Installing the interface does not, by itself, install or secure Docker, provision a suitable VPS, or make the server safe to expose to the internet. Portainer’s documentation describes Server and Agent as lightweight Docker containers and presents the interface as a way to simplify container management. Portainer’s official documentation
Plan for three separate things: the VPS and its operating system, the Docker installation and workloads, and Portainer’s own persistent configuration and database. Keeping those roles clear makes it easier to plan access, storage, updates, and recovery.

Should I choose Portainer CE or Business Edition?
Choose Community Edition (CE) for a free, open-source setup with fewer governance features. Business Edition (BE) is the commercial choice when you need capabilities such as role-based access control, registry management, or dedicated support; a license is required, although Portainer documents a free option for up to three nodes.
| Decision | Community Edition | Business Edition |
|---|---|---|
| License and cost | Free and open source | License required; a free three-node option can be requested |
| Typical fit | Home use, learning, and hobby projects | Business or production-oriented environments |
| Governance and support | Fewer governance features | Includes RBAC, registry management, and dedicated support |
| Platforms listed in Portainer documentation | Docker, Swarm, Kubernetes, and Azure ACI | Docker, Swarm, Kubernetes, Podman, and Azure ACI |
These are documented edition distinctions, not a guarantee that every feature or platform is appropriate for every VPS deployment. For a single-server Docker setup, decide based on whether you need the additional governance and support features rather than choosing BE simply because the server is used for work. For the current licensing terms and feature boundaries, consult Portainer’s pricing information and official documentation.

What VPS and Docker requirements should I check first?
Before installing Portainer, confirm that the VPS can run Docker and has enough storage for both your containers and Portainer’s persistent data. The available material does not establish a universal minimum RAM, CPU count, or disk size, so size the VPS for the workloads you intend to run instead of relying on an unsupported minimum.
- Operating system and access: use a Linux VPS and ensure you have sudo access to perform the documented installation steps.
- CPU architecture: confirm the VPS architecture is supported by the Portainer release you plan to use. The requirements matrix lists ARM64 and x86_64 for Portainer 2.39.0 LTS.
- Docker: install Docker using the official method for your platform, and verify that it is working before deploying Portainer. Portainer cautions against snap-installed Docker on Ubuntu because of compatibility issues.
- Disk: allow space for Docker images, container volumes, logs, and Portainer’s data volume. Git-based deployments can consume substantial disk space, so monitor usage and size storage accordingly.
- Network access: decide which administrators should reach the management interface and whether you will use a controlled reverse proxy. Do not treat a public VPS address as a reason to allow unrestricted access.
The documentation’s requirements matrix lists Portainer 2.39.0 LTS, dated February 26, 2026, for ARM64 and x86_64, with Docker 28.5.1 and 29.2.1 shown in its validation table. Those are version-specific validation details, not a promise that the same combinations remain current indefinitely. Check the matrix again when you deploy, particularly because the date of that listing is earlier than October 2026.

How do I install Portainer on a Linux VPS?
Use Portainer’s current official Docker run or Compose instructions for the edition and environment you have chosen. The safe sequence is to prepare Docker, create persistent storage, deploy the Server container using the matching official procedure, and then verify access before opening the interface beyond your intended administrators.
- Provision the VPS. Select a Linux system and CPU architecture supported by the Portainer version you intend to use. Make sure you can log in with an account that has sudo access, and plan disk capacity around Docker images, volumes, logs, and Portainer data.
- Install and check Docker. Follow Docker’s official installation method for your distribution. Confirm the Docker service is running and usable before proceeding. Portainer’s guidance advises against snap-installed Docker on Ubuntu due to compatibility issues.
- Create persistent storage for Portainer. Portainer needs storage for its database and configuration. Use the persistent-volume or volume arrangement specified in the official deployment instructions; do not rely on the container’s disposable writable layer for data you need to retain.
- Deploy Portainer Server. Follow the official Docker run or Compose instructions for your selected edition. Check that the deployment uses persistent storage and exposes the intended management port. Avoid substituting an unverified command or configuration from an unrelated guide.
- Test the HTTPS interface. Confirm that the Server container is running and that the HTTPS UI responds on TCP 9443 from an authorized network. The initial certificate is self-signed, so a browser warning is expected until you configure a trusted certificate.
- Apply network and account protections. Restrict TCP 9443 to the administrators who need it or route it through a controlled reverse proxy. Configure strong authentication, replace the self-signed certificate before public exposure, and keep the installation updated.
- Set up backups and monitoring. Back up Portainer’s persistent data volume and watch disk use, especially if you use Git-based deployments. A backup is useful only if you know where the data is stored and can restore it.
Portainer’s documentation assumes Docker is running as root. Rootless Docker has limitations and requires additional configuration, so do not assume the standard deployment instructions work unchanged in a rootless setup. SELinux can also require the documented privileged deployment adjustment. Check the relevant official installation guidance for those environments before deploying.

Which ports does Portainer need on a VPS?
TCP 9443 is the default port for Portainer Server’s HTTPS UI and API. TCP 8000 is optional and is needed for Edge Compute features that use Edge Agents; it is not a general requirement for every single-VPS installation.
| Port | Purpose | When to allow it |
|---|---|---|
| TCP 9443 | Portainer Server HTTPS UI and API | Allow only the intended administrators or a controlled reverse proxy to reach it. |
| TCP 8000 | Edge Agent tunnel functionality | Open it only when using the relevant Edge Agent features. |
Portainer’s installation documentation says the Server exposes its UI over port 9443 by default. Portainer’s Linux Docker installation instructions For a straightforward VPS setup that does not use Edge Agents, there is no reason in the supplied port guidance to open TCP 8000. Do not widen firewall access just because a port appears in an example deployment.

Apply the same intent to the VPS firewall and any firewall provided by your hosting platform: allow management traffic only from the networks or proxy you trust. If you cannot reliably restrict the interface to known administrators, reconsider exposing it directly to the public internet.
How do I secure Portainer on a public server?
Do not expose the default self-signed HTTPS endpoint as if it were a trusted public service. Replace the certificate with a trusted one, restrict network access to the management interface, and use strong authentication and regular updates.
- Use a trusted certificate: Portainer’s default certificate on 9443 is self-signed. Configure a trusted certificate before public exposure so administrators can verify the endpoint without relying on a browser warning.
- Limit access: permit TCP 9443 only for intended administrators or through a controlled reverse proxy. Keep TCP 8000 closed unless you use Edge Agent functionality.
- Protect Docker’s control plane: avoid exposing the Docker API directly over the network when an Agent-based connection is available. Use the documented Agent pattern and firewall controls where appropriate.
- Use strong authentication: protect accounts that can administer containers, since access to the management interface carries operational consequences for the environment.
- Keep software current: update Portainer and Docker on a planned basis, checking compatibility and the current requirements matrix before changing versions.
- Back up and monitor: retain a backup of Portainer’s data volume and watch disk consumption so a growing deployment does not silently exhaust the VPS.
These measures address different risks. A trusted certificate helps establish that administrators are reaching the right HTTPS endpoint; a restrictive firewall limits who can reach it; authentication controls who can use it; and backups help recover Portainer configuration and database data. None substitutes for the others.
What storage and backup plan does Portainer need?
Portainer requires persistent storage for its database and configuration. If the Server container is recreated or replaced, persistent storage is what allows that Portainer data to survive the container lifecycle.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Keep the persistent data separate from the assumption that Docker images or running containers are a backup. The relevant item to back up for Portainer itself is its data volume, using a method appropriate to your deployment. The documentation does not establish a backup schedule or retention period for every VPS, so choose those based on how often the configuration changes and how much loss you can tolerate.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Git-based deployments deserve particular attention because they can use substantial disk space. Monitor the VPS and its Docker storage rather than checking only Portainer’s own data directory; images, volumes, logs, and deployment-related files all contribute to the machine’s capacity needs. If disk use rises unexpectedly, identify which area is growing before deleting data that may belong to active workloads or needed recovery points.
What can go wrong during deployment?
Most avoidable problems come from treating Portainer as independent of Docker, using incompatible Docker packaging, omitting persistent storage, or opening ports without matching them to actual features.
- Docker is missing or not running: Portainer Server and Agent run as containers, so fix and verify Docker first rather than troubleshooting the Portainer interface in isolation.
- Ubuntu uses snap-installed Docker: Portainer notes compatibility issues with this setup. Install Docker using the platform’s official method instead.
- Portainer data disappears after replacement: check that the deployment uses persistent storage for its database and configuration, and confirm that the persistent volume is included in backups.
- The browser warns about the certificate: the default 9443 certificate is self-signed. Configure a trusted certificate before exposing the interface publicly.
- Edge functionality cannot connect: check whether your use case actually depends on Edge Agents and, if so, whether TCP 8000 is allowed as needed. Do not open it as a blanket fix for an ordinary Server UI access problem.
- Rootless or SELinux deployment behaves differently: the standard instructions assume root-running Docker; rootless Docker needs additional configuration, and SELinux may require the documented privileged adjustment.
- Disk space is running low: inspect Docker images, volumes, logs, and Portainer data, giving particular attention to Git-based deployments that can consume significant space.
How do I decide whether Portainer belongs on my VPS?
A VPS installation makes sense when you want a web interface to manage the Docker environment on that server and can maintain its access controls, certificates, updates, storage, and backups. Portainer is not a shortcut around those responsibilities; it gives administrators another interface into container management.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I manage Docker on a different server from my Portainer VPS?
Portainer supports Agent-based management patterns, but the available deployment details here do not establish every supported topology or connection step. Use Portainer’s official Agent documentation for the exact environment and avoid publishing the Docker API directly as a substitute.
Will Portainer keep running if I close my browser?
The browser is only the client used to access Portainer’s interface; the Server runs as a Docker container on the VPS. Closing the browser does not itself stop that container, though the VPS and Docker service still need to remain available.
Can I use Portainer without opening it to the whole internet?
Yes. The management port can be limited to administrator source networks or reached through a controlled reverse proxy. A VPN or other private access arrangement can also keep management traffic off the public-facing path, provided your network setup supports it.
