For most homes, Cat 6 is a sensible starting point; the safest, neatest installation also depends on your cable’s own handling limits, local electrical and building rules, and protecting the cable from damage.
Plan the routes and network location first
Mark the outlets you need, then trace possible paths back to a central place for your modem, router, switch, or structured-wiring equipment. A home-run layout—one cable from each outlet back to the distribution point—makes connections easier to identify and change later. Leviton’s residential networking guidance describes this kind of structured setup; its Basic Residential Installer Guide recommends labeling both cable ends and the wiring chart.
Choose a location that is accessible and practical for equipment, with room for the cable paths you expect to need. Leviton identifies an interior wall without insulation as a useful location for a structured-media enclosure. Avoid placing that enclosure immediately beside an electrical panel or large appliance, or in an exposed location subject to extremes such as an unprotected attic, garage, or outside wall. These are enclosure-placement recommendations, not a substitute for checking the conditions and rules in your home.
Before cutting or drilling, inspect both sides of the route and consider what may be hidden: electrical cable, plumbing, framing, fire blocks, and rated wall or floor assemblies. There is no single locating method established here that makes every concealed route safe. If you cannot establish what is behind a surface, or do not know whether a wall or floor is fire-rated, stop and ask a qualified local professional rather than drilling blindly.

Choose Cat 6 or Cat 6A for the installation
For most residential networks, Cat 6 is a practical baseline. Leviton says Cat 6 meets the needs of the vast majority of residential applications, including gigabit, 2.5-gigabit, and many 5-gigabit uses at residential distances. It identifies Cat 6A as an option for very high-bandwidth needs, such as a home editing studio using demanding network-attached storage. Those are the manufacturer’s recommendations, not results of independent comparative testing.

When choosing a product, check its exact jacket and environmental rating for the route, conductor construction, outside diameter, bend-radius and pulling guidance, and compatibility with your jacks and tools. Category alone does not tell you every mechanical limit. For example, CommScope’s specification for one Cat 6A cable model lists a minimum bend radius of four times the cable diameter and a maximum pulling tension of 25 pounds. Those are specifications for that model, not universal Cat 6 or Cat 6A limits.

Route Ethernet apart from electrical wiring
Follow local code and the rules that apply to the actual wiring method. Leviton’s installer guide advises drilling separate holes for low-voltage cable rather than sharing holes with AC wiring. It recommends using a separate stud space where possible; if a crossing is necessary, it advises crossing AC wiring at 90 degrees.
The same guide gives a 12-inch separation recommendation for parallel runs in its installation context. Do not treat that figure as a universal rule: local requirements and the wiring method used in your home control. If you cannot maintain the separation required for your installation, get qualified local advice before proceeding.

Keep Ethernet cable away from hot-water pipes and heat ducts, and do not route it through electrical equipment. Low voltage does not mean every route is safe or code-free. Take care not to damage structural framing, and do not penetrate a fire-rated wall or floor without an appropriate method to maintain the assembly’s rating. Leviton specifically warns that its structured-media enclosure should not be mounted in a fire-rated wall unless a third-party solution maintains the rating; that enclosure guidance does not specify one fire-stopping method for every cable penetration.
Pull and support cable without damaging it
- Prepare the path. Make sure the route is clear, accessible, and free of sharp edges that could catch the cable. If using conduit, check its suitability and applicable fill and installation rules. Leviton recommends leaving a pull cord in conduit for future additions, but its fill guidance should not be treated as universal.
- Pull gently. Avoid jerking, kinking, crushing, or forcing cable around corners. Leviton’s guide recommends using less than 25 pounds of pull force in its installation context, but the selected cable’s own limit takes precedence; the CommScope example above is specific to a named model.
- Handle bends one at a time. Leviton advises going around one bend at a time and following the cable manufacturer’s bend-radius instructions. Avoid tight coils at outlets or equipment locations; leave enough service slack for termination without winding up excess cable tightly.
- Support and protect the run. Use suitable low-voltage supports, secure bundles loosely, and avoid tight ties, crushing, or ordinary staples. Where fasteners could reach the cable, Leviton recommends nail plates. These measures reduce the risk of pinching or puncturing the cable during installation or later work.
Terminate, label, and check each run
Use jacks, outlets, and other termination components that match the cable and the system you have chosen. Keep the cable path organized, label both ends clearly, and update the wiring chart as Leviton’s installer guide recommends. Before closing access points, check each run’s continuity or wire map with an appropriate tester. The guide recommends inspection during installation, but no particular tester or termination method has been evaluated here.

Make exposed runs tidy and suitable for their environment
If a cable cannot be concealed, use a protected pathway appropriate to the location, secure it neatly, and avoid leaving it exposed where it can be snagged or damaged. Leviton advises avoiding exposed external cable where possible and using conduit if an exterior route is necessary. Cable and pathway products must be rated for the environment they will face; an indoor product is not automatically suitable outdoors.
