Yes—an everyday computer can run a local large language model without a graphics card, provided you choose a model small enough for its available memory and use a quantized version. An 8GB PC can be an entry point for small models; 16GB gives you more room to experiment. The trade-off is speed: CPU-only chat can be useful for private drafting, summarizing and document questions, but responsiveness varies with the exact processor, model, context length and runtime.

What makes CPU-only local LLMs practical now?

Local inference means the model runs on your computer instead of sending each prompt to a hosted AI service. Common CPU-only computers can do this: the llama.cpp project documents support for x64 and ARM64 systems, and Docker lists CPU inference as supported for llama.cpp, particularly for local development and resource-constrained environments. NVIDIA describes the broader purpose of local LLMs as running AI workflows on a PC or workstation.

The change is not that a normal CPU has become equivalent to a powerful GPU. It is that smaller models, memory-saving quantization and easier-to-use runtimes make useful experiments possible without dedicated graphics hardware. The limiting factors are still model size, memory capacity and speed. A model that loads successfully may produce text too slowly for comfortable back-and-forth conversation.

How much RAM do you need?

RAM has to hold the model and support the rest of the workload. A computer also needs memory for its operating system, the inference runtime and the model’s context cache, so the model’s weight file is not the whole memory requirement. Treat model-to-RAM ranges as planning estimates, not guarantees for every computer or runtime.

Installed RAM Practical starting point What to keep in mind
8GB Small models; a 1.5B chatbot is cited as possible on a regular Windows computer. Expect limited headroom. A 2026 LocalAnalysis guide estimates that 8GB generally covers 3B–9B Q4 models, but the upper end is not a promise that every such model will fit alongside the operating system and a substantial context.
16GB A more flexible starting point for trying small-to-mid-size models. LocalAnalysis estimates 12B–24B Q4 models for this capacity. A separate 2026 Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe guide reports about 2.5 tokens per second for one 14B model on a 16GB machine; that is one example, not a general speed rating.
24GB or more More room to try models around 30B, depending on the model and settings. LocalAnalysis gives this as a rough capacity range. Larger models can still require substantial additional memory and disk space.

The difference between installed RAM and available RAM matters. If other applications are already consuming memory, a model near the machine’s practical limit may fail to load, force the system to swap, or leave too little room for longer prompts. Leave headroom rather than assigning all memory to model weights.

Why model size alone does not settle whether it will fit

Parameter count is a useful first filter, but it does not capture every part of the memory budget. Quantization changes how much memory the weights need, while context length affects the memory used to keep track of the conversation. The runtime and operating system also need room. So a model that starts at a short context setting may not remain workable when you raise that setting or load a large document.

What does quantization do?

Quantization stores model weights in a lower-precision format, reducing their memory footprint compared with full-precision weights. That is a major reason smaller computers can run models that would otherwise be too large for their available RAM. The trade-off is that lower precision can affect output quality; how noticeable that is depends on the model and the task.

For a first experiment, the practical guidance is to choose a GGUF model and start with Q4_K_M. It is a starting point, not a universal best setting: the suitable choice depends on how much memory the computer has and what you need the model to do. If a model does not fit comfortably, try a smaller model or a more memory-efficient option rather than assuming the CPU is incompatible.

How does context length affect memory?

Context length is the amount of text the model can consider in a conversation or task. It includes the material you provide and, as a conversation develops, the history that remains available to the model. The runtime maintains a key-value cache, usually called the KV cache, to support that context; this consumes memory in addition to the model weights.

Consequently, a model that fits at an 8K context may not fit at 32K or 128K. Larger context settings can be useful for longer material, but they are not free upgrades. Start with a shorter context and increase it only if you need it and the computer has enough headroom. If loading a long prompt causes memory trouble, reducing the context or splitting the work into smaller sections can help.

Which is easier: Ollama, LM Studio or llama.cpp?

Ollama and LM Studio are the simpler routes for people who want to get a model running with less setup. llama.cpp is the more direct choice when you need explicit control, CPU portability or an OpenAI-compatible server. All three choices still depend on selecting a model that suits the machine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Option Best fit Trade-off
Ollama A straightforward first run for someone who does not want to manage low-level inference settings. Less direct control than working with llama.cpp itself; choose the model and context with the same memory limits in mind.
LM Studio A more approachable way to work with local models through a desktop application. The convenience of an application does not remove CPU speed or memory constraints.
llama.cpp Users who want direct runtime control, CPU portability or an OpenAI-compatible server. More hands-on than the simpler options. Its project states that its goal is inference with minimal setup and state-of-the-art performance across a wide range of hardware, locally and in the cloud, but performance still depends on the particular machine and model.

For CPU-only use, llama.cpp compatibility is a useful portability signal: its documentation supports x64 and ARM64 systems. Actual performance can still vary across processors and builds, so architecture support should not be mistaken for a guarantee of a particular response speed.

How do you try a local model without overloading your PC?

Begin with a small, quantized model and the memory you actually have available. A 16GB computer is a more forgiving starting point if you have one, but an 8GB machine can still be suitable for a small model. You do not need a GPU to test CPU inference.

  1. Check available memory and disk space. Note the computer’s installed RAM and whether other applications are using much of it. Make sure there is room for the model download as well as its runtime.
  2. Pick the runtime for your comfort level. Choose Ollama or LM Studio for a simpler start; choose llama.cpp if you want more direct control or an OpenAI-compatible server.
  3. Choose a model that fits the machine. Prefer a smaller parameter count over a model that leaves almost no memory for the system. Select a GGUF model and begin with Q4_K_M as a practical quantized starting point.
  4. Start with a modest context. Avoid assuming a model’s maximum context is a good default on a memory-constrained PC. Increase context only when a task needs it and the system remains responsive.
  5. Try a short, representative task. Test the kind of work you actually expect to do—such as drafting, summarizing or asking questions about a short document—and judge both answer quality and waiting time.
  6. Adjust one constraint at a time. If the model will not load or becomes impractically slow, reduce model size, lower context or close other memory-heavy applications before trying again.

How slow is CPU-only inference?

There is no universal tokens-per-second figure for an “everyday CPU.” Processor model, model size, quantization, runtime, context and available memory all affect the result. The reported 2.5 tokens per second for a 14B model on a 16GB machine comes from one 2026 guide by the Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe; it should not be read as a prediction for another computer.

CPU-only inference is most appealing when the task can tolerate pauses: private chat, drafting, summarization or question-answering over material you provide. If you expect instant, sustained responses from a larger model, a basic CPU-only setup may disappoint. A smaller model can be a better practical choice than a larger one that technically starts but responds too slowly.

Will a mini PC run a local AI chatbot?

Potentially, if its memory, processor architecture and available disk suit the model. The label “mini PC” does not tell you enough by itself: check installed and available RAM, CPU architecture and how much storage is free. Memory capacity and bandwidth are more informative than a marketing label such as “AI PC” when estimating whether CPU inference will be workable.

For a compact computer with limited memory, start with a small quantized model and short context. If you want to run a larger model, confirm the full memory and disk requirements rather than relying on parameter count alone. As one illustration of the upper end, NVIDIA’s 2026 example for a Qwen3.6-35B-A3B run calls for about 30GB of free memory and about 40GB of free disk for the model download and build artifacts. That example is far beyond what an 8GB PC can accommodate.

What are the main limits of running an LLM locally?

  • Memory limits: Model weights, context cache, runtime and operating system all compete for RAM.
  • Lower speed: A CPU can run inference, but there is no single speed that applies to all ordinary computers.
  • Model trade-offs: Smaller models and quantized weights help with fit and memory use, while model choice and quantization can affect task quality.
  • Disk space: Large model files and related build artifacts can need substantial storage, as NVIDIA’s example illustrates.
  • Local does not mean automatically protected: Running inference locally keeps the model workload on your machine, but it does not by itself establish how a particular app handles telemetry, files, logs or network connections. Check the runtime’s own privacy and network settings if those details matter.

How should you decide whether your computer is enough?

Use the available memory and the task’s tolerance for waiting as the first decision points. Choose an 8GB machine for small-model exploration, a 16GB machine when you want more flexibility, and substantially more memory when considering models around 30B. Then account for the context you need and leave room for the rest of the computer.

If a chosen model cannot fit, reduce the model size or context before concluding that local LLMs are impossible on the machine. If it fits but the interaction is too slow, try a smaller model and compare the result on your actual task. CPU-only local AI is practical when the workload matches the hardware—not because every model can run comfortably on every PC.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a local LLM need an internet connection after I download it?

The model can perform inference locally, but whether an app needs a connection for downloads, updates or other features depends on that runtime and its configuration. Check the app’s network behavior rather than assuming that local inference means the software never connects.

Can a local chatbot answer questions about my files?

Some local workflows can use documents as input, but the model does not automatically know the contents of files on your computer. You need a runtime or workflow that accepts the material, and results can depend on how much of it fits in the model’s context.

Does running an LLM locally make it as capable as a cloud AI service?

Not necessarily. Local performance depends on the model you can run and its suitability for the task; a smaller model that fits your PC may differ in capability from a larger hosted model.

Can I use the computer while a local model is generating?

Usually, but the model and other applications share the computer’s memory and processing resources. Heavy concurrent workloads can make inference less responsive, particularly on a machine with little spare RAM.
