You can run an AI model locally on a Windows PC with Ollama, then connect it to an application that can use tools to perform actions. Ollama installs and serves the model; it does not, by itself, turn a chat model into an agent with permission to control your computer. The practical setup is to install Ollama, choose and run a model your hardware can support, then use a compatible integration or build an application that handles tool calls and controls what actions are allowed.

What do you need to run a local AI agent with Ollama?

You need three pieces: Ollama to run the model, a model downloaded to your PC, and an application or integration that can give the model tools and execute the actions it requests. The model generates responses and can request tool calls; the integration decides whether to run those calls, returns their results, and continues the exchange.

That distinction matters. Installing Ollama and starting a model gives you local chat, not automatic, unrestricted control of Windows. The application supplying tools determines what the model can do and how execution is handled. Ollama documents both coding-agent and personal-assistant integration paths, as well as terminal-based launch options, in its integrations overview.

The basic architecture

A useful way to picture the system is as a loop:

  1. You send a goal and conversation history to the model through an integration.
  2. The model either answers normally or requests one of the tools that the application has described.
  3. The application validates the request and decides whether to execute it.
  4. The tool returns a result, such as text, a file listing, or the output of an approved operation.
  5. The application sends that result back to the model, which decides whether to answer, request another tool, or ask for clarification.

Ollama provides the model-serving layer. The integration supplies the loop, tool definitions, user interface, and permission checks. If any of those pieces is missing, you have a local chatbot rather than a complete agent workflow.

Will your Windows PC run Ollama and a model?

Ollama’s Windows documentation lists Windows 10 22H2 or newer, Home or Pro, and supported NVIDIA or AMD driver paths. It says the Ollama application itself needs at least 4 GB of storage; model files are additional and may take tens to hundreds of gigabytes. Those storage figures do not promise a particular model will run at a particular speed.

There is no single memory figure in the cited Windows requirements that guarantees a good experience across models. Memory needs depend on the model and context size, and Ollama cautions that “Larger context windows need more memory.” GPU support also depends on the supported driver path for your hardware. Performance varies with the PC, selected model, context size, and runtime, so documentation alone cannot establish that a particular setup will feel smooth.

For one clearly bounded example, Ollama’s current Quickstart shows Gemma 4 E2B as a download of about 7.2 GB and recommends 8 GB of available VRAM or unified memory on Mac for that example. This is not a general Windows minimum or a recommendation for every model; consult the current Quickstart and model library before choosing.

A practical pre-install checklist

  • Confirm that the Windows edition and version meet the Windows page’s requirement of Windows 10 22H2 or newer.
  • Check free space on the drive that will hold Ollama and your downloaded models. The application’s 4 GB figure is not a complete allowance for models.
  • Identify whether your PC uses a supported NVIDIA or AMD driver path. A compatible driver can affect whether acceleration is available.
  • Check system memory and, where applicable, available graphics memory. Do not treat one model’s recommendation as a universal minimum.
  • Decide what you want the agent to do. A coding assistant, document helper, and desktop automation workflow may need different models and different tools.
  • Plan how you will review tool calls. You should know which files, commands, or services an integration can reach before connecting it.

Plan storage separately from the application

Allow room for downloaded models beyond the application’s 4 GB requirement. A collection of models can grow into tens or hundreds of gigabytes, and the Windows documentation explains how to change the model storage location. If internal storage is tight, using an external SSD for model storage is a practical option, not an Ollama endorsement or a tested performance recommendation.

Storage planning is also about model choice. Downloading several variants, keeping older versions, and testing larger context settings can consume space faster than expected. Keep enough free capacity for temporary download activity and for the other files your Windows installation needs. If you move the model location, use the setting described in Ollama’s Windows documentation rather than assuming a path from another computer or an older release.

How do you install Ollama on Windows?

Download the Windows installer from Ollama’s official site and follow its installation flow. Ollama says its Windows app runs natively and makes the ollama command available from Command Prompt, PowerShell, or another terminal.

  1. Review the current Windows requirements, especially the Windows version and supported GPU driver path.
  2. Download and install Ollama for Windows using the official download page linked from Ollama’s documentation.
  3. Open Command Prompt or PowerShell and enter ollama to check that the command is available. If the command is not recognized immediately after installation, open a new terminal and try again.
  4. Start Ollama if it is not already running, then choose a model and run it from the terminal.

The Windows documentation also describes changing where models are stored. Use that documented setting if your default drive lacks room; the available evidence does not establish one universal default path or a total disk allowance for a user’s complete model collection.

What to verify immediately after installation

First, verify that the command-line entry point is visible. A newly opened terminal is important because environment changes may not appear in a window that was open during installation. Next, verify that Ollama is running before you attempt an integration. A model command can confirm that the local service is responding, but a successful chat still does not prove that an agent integration can execute tools.

Do not install a third-party agent at the same time as Ollama and assume an error belongs to one product. Test the layers separately: command availability, Ollama service, model download, local chat, and finally tool execution. This order makes it easier to identify whether a problem is a Windows requirement, a storage issue, a model-resource mismatch, an API configuration error, or an integration permission decision.

How do you download and run a local model?

Choose a model from Ollama’s current model library, then run it with the model name and tag shown there. For the Quickstart’s example, the command is ollama run gemma4:e2b. Ollama downloads the model if needed and starts a local chat.

  1. Check the current model listing and select a model whose download size, memory needs, context requirements, and capabilities fit your PC and task.
  2. Open Command Prompt, PowerShell, or another terminal where the ollama command is available.
  3. Enter ollama run gemma4:e2b for the Quickstart example, or substitute a current model name and tag from the library.
  4. Wait for the model download to complete. The first run requires downloading its files, so allow for the model’s storage needs in addition to the Ollama application.
  5. Send a prompt in the resulting chat to confirm that the model responds. This verifies local chat, not agent tool execution.

Model names, availability, downloads, and resource needs can change. The Gemma 4 E2B size and memory guidance above are specific to the documented example, not a promise that a different model—or even a different workload on the same PC—will perform similarly.

How should you choose a model?

Start with the task rather than the largest available download. For short question answering or a lightweight personal assistant, a smaller model may be easier to fit. Coding, long documents, and multi-step tool use can place greater demands on model capability and context memory. Compare at least four attributes in the current model listing:

  • Download and storage size: Larger files consume more disk space and take longer to download.
  • Memory fit: Consider available system memory, graphics memory, and the amount of memory the context window requires.
  • Context needs: A workflow that keeps many messages or large documents in the conversation needs more memory than a short prompt.
  • Task capability: Check whether the model is appropriate for your language, coding, reasoning, or tool-calling task.

There is no universally best model in the cited documentation. Test the exact model and workload you intend to use. A model that starts successfully may still respond too slowly for an interactive agent, especially when the context grows or when the integration sends extensive tool output.

How do you add agent behavior?

Use an integration that supports local Ollama models, or build an application that connects to Ollama and implements tools. In either case, the application—not the model alone—defines the available actions and runs the requested tool calls.

Option 1: Use an Ollama launch integration

Ollama’s integration overview describes terminal-based launch options for coding-agent and personal-assistant workflows. The exact launch command and compatible integrations can change, so use the current instructions in that overview. Before relying on an integration, verify that it supports Ollama models and that its permissions and execution behavior fit your use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A launch integration is attractive when you want to get from a working local chat to a usable workflow without writing an agent framework. However, “supports Ollama” does not automatically answer the questions that matter operationally. Find out which model name the integration expects, where it stores conversation history, whether it asks for approval before a tool runs, and which tools are enabled by default. If the integration can open a shell or modify files, identify whether those operations are limited to a project directory or can reach the wider PC.

Option 2: Connect an application to Ollama’s local API

For a custom integration, Ollama’s API introduction lists http://localhost:11434/api as the local API base URL and says local requests do not need an API key. An application can send a conversation to Ollama, provide tool definitions where appropriate, inspect a requested tool call, execute the permitted action, and return the result so the model can continue.

Ollama’s tool-calling documentation describes the model’s role in requesting tools. The surrounding application still has to implement the tools and decide how they run. The API introduction is at Ollama’s API documentation.

A sensible custom flow separates planning from execution. Give the model a small, explicit list of tools with clear input fields and descriptions. When a tool request arrives, validate the arguments, check the user’s approval policy, run only the allowed operation, and capture a concise result. Then send that result back to the model. Do not silently treat arbitrary text emitted by the model as a command; only your application’s deliberate tool parser and executor should perform actions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Decide what the agent is allowed to do

Start with a narrow task and only the tools needed for it. Review how the integration handles tool calls and permissions before granting access to files, commands, or other consequential actions. A model can request a tool call; whether that request is approved and what it changes depends on the application’s execution logic. The available documentation establishes the tool-calling flow, not a security review or guarantee for every third-party integration.

For a first project, read-only tools are easier to evaluate than tools that delete, overwrite, install, or send information. Require confirmation for consequential actions and show the exact target, arguments, and expected effect before execution. Keep credentials and sensitive directories outside the tool scope unless there is a specific reason to expose them. Local execution reduces the need to send prompts to a hosted model, but it does not make a poorly designed integration safe automatically.

What should you check when setup does not work?

  • The terminal cannot find ollama: Open a fresh Command Prompt or PowerShell after installation and check again. Ollama says its installer makes the command available from these terminals.
  • The model download will not fit: Check free disk space for model files as well as the application. Ollama says model storage can reach tens to hundreds of gigabytes and documents changing its storage location.
  • A model is slow or cannot use the expected hardware: Verify that Windows meets the documented version requirement and that the NVIDIA or AMD driver path is supported. Model, context size, available memory, hardware, and runtime all affect performance; the example’s 8 GB figure is not a universal guarantee.
  • The model chats but does not take actions: That is expected when you have only started a model. Connect a compatible integration or implement an application with tools and an execution flow.
  • The integration cannot connect: Check that Ollama is running and that the application is configured for the documented local API base URL, http://localhost:11434/api. Confirm the integration supports Ollama rather than assuming every agent application does.
  • Only some prompts fail: Compare the failing prompt’s context length and tool output with a short test. Larger context windows need more memory, so a workflow can become impractical as history accumulates even when a short chat works.
  • Tools are requested but never run: Inspect the integration’s approval settings and tool implementation. A model request is not execution; the application may be waiting for confirmation, rejecting arguments, or exposing no executable tool at all.
  • The wrong model is loaded: Check the exact model name and tag configured in the integration. Model catalogs and tags can change, so use the current Ollama listing rather than copying an old tutorial unchanged.

How do you choose between an integration and a custom agent?

A launch integration is the more direct route when it supports the task and model you want. A custom application takes more implementation work, but lets you define the tools and execution checks yourself. The documentation establishes these broad paths, not a benchmark comparing individual agent products.

Approach Setup effort Tools and actions Permission handling
Ollama launch integration Use the integration’s documented launch instructions. Depends on the selected integration and its supported workflow. Check the integration’s own permission and execution behavior.
Custom application using the local API Requires building the application and its tool-execution flow. Defined by the tools the application implements. Can be designed into the application; the implementation must decide what tool requests are allowed.

For either route, validate three things before committing: the integration supports Ollama locally, it exposes the actions you need, and you understand how it approves and executes those actions. For model selection, compare download and storage size, hardware fit, context needs, and task capability. The available sources do not establish comparative quality rankings between models.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What will this setup cost?

The documented requirements identify storage and compatible hardware as practical constraints, but they do not provide a universal total cost or a particular PC specification. Ollama’s application requirement is at least 4 GB of storage, while models can add tens to hundreds of gigabytes. If your internal drive is already full, an external SSD for model storage is an optional expense to consider. The right capacity and performance depend on how many models you keep and how often you switch between them; no particular drive brand or model is established here.

You may also need to account for an operating-system update or a supported graphics-driver update if your PC does not meet the Windows documentation. Those are compatibility requirements, not promises of faster inference. Avoid budgeting from a single model’s 7.2 GB download or 8 GB memory example as though it were a complete system recommendation.

A repeatable setup and testing plan

  1. Document the machine: Record the Windows version, available disk space, system memory, graphics hardware, and driver status.
  2. Install Ollama: Use the official Windows installer, then open a new terminal and confirm the ollama command.
  3. Run one model: Use a current model-library entry and test a short prompt. Note download size, response time, and whether the chat remains usable as the context grows.
  4. Choose the agent path: Select a documented launch integration or plan the tools and API flow for your own application.
  5. Start with read-only tools: Test listing, searching, or summarizing before adding actions that change files or execute commands.
  6. Review every call: Confirm that the integration shows the requested tool, arguments, target, and result. Tighten permissions when the behavior is broader than intended.
  7. Expand gradually: Add one tool at a time and retest after changing the model, context settings, storage location, or integration version.

This staged approach separates model performance from agent safety. It also gives you a baseline when you change hardware or move models to another drive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Ollama need an internet connection after setup?

The setup described here requires downloading Ollama and a model, but Ollama’s cited documentation does not establish whether every integration or feature works fully offline. An integration may have its own connectivity requirements, so check its documentation rather than assuming that a local model makes the whole workflow offline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much RAM do I need for Ollama?

There is no single figure that guarantees a good experience for every model. Ollama cautions that larger context windows need more memory. The Quickstart’s 8 GB recommendation is tied to its Gemma 4 E2B example and is not a universal Windows minimum.

How much disk space should I reserve?

The Windows documentation lists at least 4 GB for the Ollama application itself, with model files requiring additional storage that can reach tens to hundreds of gigabytes. The total depends on how many models and versions you keep. Ollama documents changing the model storage location if the default drive is too small.

Does using Ollama locally guarantee that my prompts stay private?

Ollama documents a local API and says local requests do not need an API key, but that fact alone does not establish how a separate integration handles data. Check what that application stores, transmits, or logs before using sensitive information.

Can I use an Ollama agent without a GPU?

The Windows documentation specifies supported NVIDIA or AMD driver paths, but the cited sources do not establish a universal CPU-only performance target. Whether a model is usable on a particular PC depends on the model, context, available memory, and workload.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does running a model not make it an agent?

A model can generate text and request a tool, but an application must define the tools, execute approved calls, return results, and enforce permissions. Starting a model with ollama run verifies local chat, not unrestricted computer control.

Do local API requests require an API key?

Ollama’s API introduction lists http://localhost:11434/api as the local API base URL and says local requests do not need an API key. Your integration may still have its own authentication, configuration, or network requirements.

Can I move Ollama models to another drive?

Yes. Ollama’s Windows documentation describes changing the model storage location. Follow that documented configuration rather than assuming a default path, and verify that the new drive has enough capacity for downloads and your model collection.

How do I know whether an integration is safe to use?

Check which local models it supports, what tools it exposes, where it can read or write, whether it asks for confirmation, and how it logs or transmits data. The existence of Ollama tool calling does not constitute a security review of any third-party integration.

The Bottom Line

Install Ollama on a supported Windows system, reserve storage for models, and test one model with ollama run. Then add agent behavior through a compatible integration or an application that connects to http://localhost:11434/api, implements tools, and checks every requested action. Treat model size, context length, drivers, storage, and permissions as separate decisions; a working local chat is only the first layer of a safe local agent.
