To hear an MSX cartridge through speakers, an amplifier, headphones, or a computer, take the signal from the MSX’s audio output rather than trying to extract sound from the cartridge connector. SCC and comparable cartridge chips generate analog audio that returns through slot pin 49, labeled SOUNDIN; compatible MSX computers mix it with their internal PSG and other audio before sending the result to the machine’s output. Connect that output with the correct DIN, RCA, SCART, or 3.5 mm cable. For recording, feed the line-level signal into a computer line input or USB audio interface. The important qualification is model compatibility: some MSX computers do not connect SOUNDIN at all, while others pass it at a different level.

What signal does an MSX sound cartridge produce?

An SCC, SCC-I, or other audio cartridge is not a USB audio device and does not normally deliver a computer-ready digital stream. Its sound chip creates an analog waveform inside the cartridge. That waveform is returned to the MSX through cartridge-slot pin 49, marked SOUNDIN, where the computer’s audio circuitry may mix it with the built-in PSG, MSX-MUSIC, or other internal sources.

The resulting mix is then available at the MSX’s normal audio output. This is why the simplest and most reliable routing method is to connect the computer’s audio connector to your speakers or recording equipment. The cartridge connector itself carries the console’s bus signals and, for supported cartridges, an analog return path; it is not a convenient line-out socket.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The routing is not universal across the MSX family. The slot reference identifies machines in which SOUNDIN is not connected, including the Casio PV-7, Hitachi MB-H1, Victor HC-30, Yamaha SX-100, and Korean MSX machines. Some other models have the pin physically connected but still do not pass SCC audio correctly because of their mixer or resistor network. A cartridge can therefore work perfectly in one MSX and be silent or unusually quiet in another.

The SCC technical reference describes the process succinctly: the computer mixes the cartridge signal with its own sound. The exact loudness balance depends on each computer’s mixing circuit, so there is no single SCC-to-PSG volume ratio that applies to every model.

Which MSX connector should I use?

Use the output connector that your particular MSX exposes. Many original machines use a six-pin DIN connector, while later or enhanced hardware may provide RCA, SCART, or a 3.5 mm jack. Check the machine’s manual or service documentation before wiring an unfamiliar connector.

MSX output Typical destination What to verify
DIN-6 audio DIN-to-RCA, DIN-to-3.5 mm cable, amplifier, powered speakers, or USB interface Pin assignment and whether the connector carries mono audio, video, or both
RCA audio Powered speakers, hi-fi amplifier, capture device, or line input Which RCA socket is audio and whether the source is mono
SCART audio Television, SCART breakout cable, or audio extractor That the breakout uses the audio pins rather than only composite or RGB video
3.5 mm output Headphones, powered speakers, amplifier, or computer input Whether the jack is specified as headphone output, line output, or both

On the DIN-6 mapping documented by the Ultimate MSX FAQ, audio left or mono is on pin 4, audio right is on pin 6, and ground is on pin 3. The example RCA wiring uses the audio pin and ground. A machine can expose two RCA channels while still producing only a mono source; two plugs do not create stereo information.

Modern hardware such as FLASHJACKS documents a 3.5 mm jack that can be used as a headphone or line output. If your unit has that jack, use a normal shielded 3.5 mm cable and follow its stated output-level guidance.

How do I connect an MSX to speakers or headphones?

For ordinary listening, route the MSX’s mixed analog output directly to an appropriate powered destination. Do not connect a bare cartridge pin to a speaker input: the cartridge return is an internal signal path, not a user-facing connector.

  1. Identify the audio output. Locate the DIN-6, RCA, SCART, or 3.5 mm connector on the exact MSX model. Confirm its pinout from model-specific documentation.
  2. Choose a matching cable. Use a DIN-to-RCA or DIN-to-3.5 mm lead for a DIN output, an RCA lead for RCA sockets, or a SCART audio breakout where necessary. A cable designed only for video may leave audio disconnected.
  3. Connect to an active destination. Plug the cable into powered speakers, an amplifier, a monitor or television audio input, or a headphone amplifier. Passive speakers cannot be driven directly by a line output.
  4. Start at low volume. Turn down the MSX, amplifier, and speaker controls before powering up. Increase the source and destination levels gradually while listening for hum or clipping.
  5. Handle mono correctly. If the MSX provides one mono signal but the destination expects left and right, use a mono-to-stereo adapter or feed the same signal to both channels with a suitable cable. Do not use a cable that shorts left and right together unless it is designed for that purpose.

When the output is mono, both speakers can reproduce the same signal, but the result remains mono. Stereo speakers or a two-channel cable cannot recover stereo separation that the MSX did not generate.

How do I route MSX sound into a computer?

Use the MSX’s analog line or headphone output as the source. A desktop computer with a genuine line-in can accept it directly; a computer without line-in needs a USB audio interface or USB sound card with an analog input. A microphone-only input is a poor substitute because it may add bias voltage, excessive gain, or unwanted processing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Connect the source. Run the MSX audio output to the interface’s line input. If the MSX provides mono audio, use a mono-to-stereo lead or an interface input configured for one channel.
  2. Select the interface. In the operating system’s sound settings, choose the USB interface or sound card as the recording and monitoring input. In your recording application, select the same device rather than the computer’s built-in microphone.
  3. Set conservative gain. Begin with the MSX volume low and the interface gain near its minimum. Play a loud passage and raise gain until the meter is strong but never reaches 0 dBFS or shows a clipping indicator. The available documentation describes connectors and routing, but does not establish one universal voltage or volume setting for every MSX model.
  4. Monitor safely. Use headphones or powered speakers connected to the interface’s monitor output. Avoid creating a feedback loop by monitoring the same signal through both the computer’s speakers and the MSX’s amplifier.
  5. Record a test. Capture 20–30 seconds containing both quiet and loud notes. Inspect the waveform or meters, then adjust gain and record again if peaks are flattened or the noise floor is excessive.

Do not expect a digital signal from the cartridge slot. The computer-side recording chain is MSX analog output → interface line input → operating-system input → recording software. If you need separate SCC and PSG tracks, the normal output will not provide them independently; it is already a hardware mix unless your particular cartridge or enhancement supplies separate outputs.

Can openMSX record cartridge music without an audio cable?

Yes. In openMSX, emulation can capture its generated audio directly, avoiding an analog loop through speakers and a sound card. The manual documents two equivalent ways to start capture.

  1. Open Tools → Capture → Audio/Video.
  2. Enable Audio in the capture dialog and choose the destination and format offered by your installed version.
  3. Start capture, play the emulated cartridge, and stop when finished.

Alternatively, open the emulator console and enter soundlog start. Stop the recording with soundlog stop; openMSX writes a WAV file. This captures the emulator’s internal mix, not the electrical behavior of a physical MSX, so it will not reveal model-specific SOUNDIN wiring, analog noise, or real hardware volume imbalance.

Why is SCC audio missing or much quieter than PSG?

There are several distinct failure points, and they should be checked in order. A silent SCC can indicate an unsupported computer rather than a bad cartridge; a quiet SCC can be normal for that machine’s mixer rather than a cabling fault.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The computer does not pass SOUNDIN

Confirm that the exact MSX model connects slot pin 49 to its audio mixer. The documented exceptions include Casio PV-7, Hitachi MB-H1, Victor HC-30, Yamaha SX-100, and Korean MSX machines. Other models may have the connection but still omit or attenuate the signal. A schematic or model-specific service reference is more reliable than assuming that every MSX behaves like a later machine.

The cartridge is not an audio cartridge

Verify that the software and hardware actually use SCC, SCC-I, or another sound-generating cartridge chip. A conventional ROM cartridge cannot produce SCC music simply because it plugs into the same slot.

The mixer ratio is different

The cartridge signal is converted to analog and combined with PSG through the computer’s resistor and mixer network. Component values and circuit design vary, changing the relative loudness. If SCC is present but quiet, adjust any available cartridge or machine volume control before attempting hardware modifications.

The cartridge has its own output requirement

Some modern cartridges generate audio that is not intended to travel solely through SOUNDIN. The MSX Virtualizer service manual notes that many cartridges use the slot’s dedicated audio line, while others require a cable connection to the cartridge. For those units, use the documented cartridge audio connector as well as the MSX output when instructed.

What is the safest troubleshooting order?

Work from reversible checks to model-specific diagnosis. Power the computer off before inserting or removing any cartridge.

  • Check power and seating. Shut down the MSX, remove and reseat the cartridge, and power on again. Never hot-swap an SCC cartridge unless the hardware documentation explicitly says it supports that operation.
  • Clean contacts. Oxidized cartridge-edge contacts can cause intermittent bus or audio behavior. Use a method intended for electronics and allow contacts to dry fully before reinserting.
  • Verify the software. Test with known SCC or other audio software. A title without cartridge music is not a useful audio test.
  • Test the MSX output itself. Play the built-in PSG or a normal system sound. If that is also absent, investigate the output cable, amplifier, and MSX audio circuit before blaming SOUNDIN.
  • Confirm model compatibility. Check whether pin 49 is connected on your model and whether its audio path is known to pass SCC.
  • Inspect volume controls. Check the MSX master volume, cartridge volume, emulator mixer, and amplifier input level. Modern systems such as MSX Virtualizer expose a cartridge mixer and route cartridge audio through EAR or RCA Audio Out.
  • Compare destinations. Listen through the MSX output, then measure or record through the interface. If one destination works and another does not, the fault is probably in the cable, adapter, input selection, or gain staging.
  • Use an external mixer if needed. If separate outputs are available but levels do not match, combine them with a small line mixer rather than modifying the MSX blindly.

Do not add a resistor or capacitor based on a generic wiring diagram. Mixing circuits differ between MSX models, and an incorrect modification can reduce volume, add distortion, or damage an audio input.

How should I handle cartridges with separate audio outputs?

Some enhanced cartridges contain additional sound sources and provide their own audio connector. The MSX Virtualizer documentation lists cartridges with PSG, DAC, SCC, OPLL, OPL2, OPL3, and OPL4 sources. It instructs users to listen through the EAR audio output or RCA Audio Out and provides cartridge-volume control. Follow that product’s routing instructions because the cartridge may not send every source through the ordinary slot return.

PlaySoniq is a concrete example of a split path. Its manual states that sound generated by the unit is sent both to the MSX and to the PlaySoniq audio connector, while MSX PSG and MSX-MUSIC are not sent to PlaySoniq. To hear the complete mix, combine the PlaySoniq output with the MSX audio output, either in a suitable mixer or through the manufacturer’s intended connection method. Connecting only one side will omit part of the music.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The MSX Sound Enhancer reference likewise describes independent volume sliders for PSG, OPLL, and external cartridge sources. It also documents an optional external power supply intended to reduce noise. These controls are useful when the goal is a balanced multi-chip mix rather than simply proving that an SCC signal exists.

Which setup is best for listening, recording, or emulation?

Goal Recommended signal path Main advantage Main limitation
Play through speakers MSX DIN/RCA/3.5 mm output → powered speakers or amplifier Fewest devices and preserves the MSX’s normal hardware mix Depends on the MSX passing SOUNDIN and may be mono
Use headphones MSX line/headphone output → headphone amplifier or suitable powered headphones Simple private monitoring A line output may need a headphone amplifier; output level varies by model
Record real hardware MSX output → USB audio interface line input → recording software Captures the physical machine, including its actual mixer balance Requires careful gain setting and introduces analog cable/interface noise
Capture emulated music openMSX Audio/Video capture or soundlog start Creates a WAV without an external audio connection Does not reproduce the electrical behavior of a particular MSX
Balance separate cartridge and MSX outputs Each documented output → external line mixer → speakers or interface Independent level control for multi-source hardware Needs compatible outputs and an additional mixer

Choose the physical MSX path when authenticity includes the machine’s analog mixer, output noise, and model-specific balance. Choose openMSX when you need a clean digital capture or repeatable recording and do not need to document a particular hardware unit.

How do I avoid hum, clipping, and channel mistakes?

  • Use shielded audio cables and keep them away from power adapters and video cables where practical.
  • Connect all equipment to a common power arrangement when safe, which can reduce ground-loop hum; never defeat protective earth on mains equipment.
  • Keep the MSX and interface gain low at first. Digital clipping cannot be repaired after recording.
  • Use a line input for a line-level source. If the interface offers separate instrument, microphone, and line modes, select line.
  • For mono output, record one centered channel or duplicate the same signal to left and right in software. Do not claim stereo separation that the source does not contain.
  • If an adapter produces silence, verify its wiring rather than assuming the MSX is defective. DIN cables sold for different MSX video/audio arrangements are not interchangeable.
  • Power down before changing cartridges or internal wiring. The slot carries more than audio, and accidental shorts can affect the computer or cartridge.

What should I document when sharing a recording?

Record the MSX model, cartridge type, output connector, interface model, and whether the signal was taken before or after an external mixer. Note whether the computer’s PSG or MSX-MUSIC was mixed with the cartridge output. These details explain why another listener may hear a different SCC level from the same software.

For a physical capture, keep an untouched source file and make level-normalized copies for publication. For openMSX, save the emulator version, machine configuration, cartridge image, and capture settings. That information makes the result reproducible without confusing an emulated WAV with a recording from original hardware.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I connect the MSX cartridge slot directly to a PC sound card?

That is not the normal or safe method. The slot’s SOUNDIN connection is an internal analog return used by the MSX mixer; use the computer’s documented audio output and a line input or USB interface instead.

Why does my SCC cartridge work on one MSX but not another?

SOUNDIN wiring and mixer networks vary by model. Some machines leave slot pin 49 unconnected, and connected machines can still attenuate the cartridge differently, so compatibility must be checked for the exact computer.

Should I record MSX audio in mono or stereo?

Record the number of channels the hardware actually provides. A mono MSX source can be copied to both channels for convenient playback, but that duplication does not add stereo information.

How can I capture only the cartridge chip and exclude PSG?

The ordinary MSX audio output is already a mixed signal, so it normally cannot separate SCC from PSG. You need a cartridge or enhancement with an independent output, then record that output separately or combine it with the MSX signal in an external mixer.
