If you approved a token allowance on a suspicious crypto site, revoke that allowance on the same network using your wallet’s trusted approval interface or that network’s block explorer. Disconnecting the site is not enough: it does not cancel an on-chain allowance. Revocation requires a gas fee and can limit future use only after the transaction succeeds; it cannot reverse a transfer that has already happened.
First, work out what happened
A wallet connection, a token approval, a signature, and disclosure of your recovery phrase or private key are different events. A site visit or connection alone does not prove that an allowance was created. Stop using the suspicious page, and never enter your recovery phrase or private key into it or into an approval checker.
- Connected the wallet: You may disconnect the site in your wallet, but that does not revoke token allowances already granted to contracts.
- Approved a token transaction: Check the approvals on the network where you interacted. An allowance relates to a token, a spender (the contract permitted to spend it), and a specific network.
- Signed a message or typed-data request: An allowance checker may not identify every kind of signature or its consequences. Do not assume that reviewing token allowances addresses every signed request.
- Shared a recovery phrase or private key: Treat this as a wallet-compromise incident. Revoking token approvals alone does not secure a wallet whose credentials were exposed.
How do I check which contracts can spend my tokens?
- Identify the network and wallet address involved. Check the chain you used on the suspicious site; approvals on one network are not a complete view of activity on another.
- Open a trusted approval interface. Use your wallet’s own tools or the approval checker on the relevant network’s block explorer. MetaMask documents allowance review through MetaMask Portfolio for Ethereum Mainnet, Polygon, and BNB Chain, and also points users to network-specific explorers such as Etherscan, BscScan, and Polygonscan. Availability and interface labels can change; confirm that the tool supports your network before proceeding. See MetaMask’s approval and revocation guidance.
- Verify the tool’s domain independently. Do not follow a link supplied by the suspicious site or enter a recovery phrase or private key. Third-party services are options, not a substitute for checking the address and network carefully.
- Review the token, spender, network, and allowance details. Focus on permissions you do not recognize or no longer need. Searching by spender or sorting recent approvals, where available, can help focus the review; neither proves a site is malicious.
Revoke.cash describes checking approvals by searching an address or connecting a wallet, selecting a network, and reviewing approvals. Ethereum.org also points readers to approval-checking resources in its security guidance and token access guide. Check that any service you choose supports the exact network and approval type you need to inspect.
How do I revoke an approval?
- Select the correct network in the wallet or checker, then locate the token-and-spender permission you want to remove.
- Choose the revoke action for that allowance. Read the wallet prompt closely: confirm the network and the transaction details before signing. Do not approve a different request just because the checker is open.
- Pay the network fee and wait for confirmation. Revocation is an on-chain transaction and requires gas. A submitted transaction is not confirmed merely because it has been sent.
- Check the result on that network. Use the wallet or relevant explorer to verify that the revoke transaction confirmed and that the allowance reflects the intended change.
MetaMask distinguishes revoking an allowance from disconnecting an app: disconnecting does not cancel permissions recorded on-chain, while revocation requires a transaction and gas. Its Portfolio allowance feature is documented for Ethereum Mainnet, Polygon, and BNB Chain; support for other networks and tools varies. Review MetaMask’s current guidance before relying on a particular interface.

What revocation can—and cannot—do
- A confirmed revocation can stop a contract from using the allowance you revoked in future, subject to the scope of that permission and the transaction’s success.
- It does not undo token transfers that already completed or retrieve stolen assets.
- It does not by itself address every type of signature or a compromised recovery phrase or private key.
- It does not revoke approvals on other networks; check each network where you may have approved a token.
If assets have moved or you disclosed wallet credentials, approval cleanup is not a complete response. Consult current official guidance from your wallet provider for incident-specific next steps.
