To revoke a connected app’s access, sign in to your bank through its official app or website, open Connected apps, Open Banking, Third-party access, or Manage consents, select the provider, and choose Cancel consent, Withdraw, or Revoke access. Then withdraw permission in the connected service too. If you gave the service your bank password, change it directly with your bank and review your account security; revoking consent alone is not enough.
Revocation is meant to stop future access, not erase information the provider has already received. If you also want that information deleted, make a separate request to the provider.
What should I do first to remove an app from my bank account?
Start with the bank’s own consent or connected-app controls, then remove the connection from the provider’s app or website. This gives you a bank-side record of the change and tells the service to stop using the connection. Open Banking UK says customers choose which apps can access their data, for how long, and can cancel through the app or website or by contacting the bank.

- Select the service or provider you want to disconnect. Check which accounts and permissions the consent covers, and note any expiry date shown.
- Choose Cancel consent, Withdraw, or Revoke access, then confirm the action.
- Check that the bank shows the connection as cancelled, revoked, or expired. Save the confirmation or take a screenshot for your records.
- Sign in to the connected service separately and withdraw the bank connection there as well.
The Co-operative Bank’s documented route is Settings → Manage open banking consents → provider → Action → Cancel consent. HSBC calls its area Open Banking Connections and says cancellation takes effect immediately. Oracle’s consent-management guide uses Access & Consent → Revoke Access. Those are examples, not universal menu names; if you cannot find the control, use your bank’s help section or contact the bank directly.

If the bank does not display the app’s familiar brand name, compare the provider name or legal entity shown in the consent record with the company’s information in the app or its privacy notice. Do not assume the authorisation belongs to an unknown party just because the names differ, but do not approve or leave a connection in place if you cannot identify it. Give the bank the name and other details shown on the consent screen and ask it to identify or revoke the authorisation.
Why revoke access in both the bank and the connected service?
The two controls serve related but distinct purposes. The bank-side action addresses the bank’s authorisation, while the provider-side action tells the service to stop using the connection and may explain what features will stop working.
| What to consider | Bank-side revocation | Provider-side withdrawal |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage | Can disable the bank’s consent or token for the connection. | Tells the service to stop using that connection. |
| Confirmation | The bank interface may show a cancellation status or confirmation. | The service may explain how disconnecting affects its features. |
| Previously received data | Does not necessarily erase data already obtained by the provider. | Does not necessarily erase data already obtained; request deletion separately. |
| Credentials previously shared | Does not secure a password that was given to the service. | Does not secure a password that was given to the service. |
| Payment permissions | Check whether the consent included payment initiation, not just account information. | Check whether a payment-related service or instruction also needs attention. |
Open Banking UK and HSBC both describe provider-side withdrawal as an available route. If the provider’s controls are unavailable or you cannot sign in, contact the bank and ask it to cancel the consent. Do not treat deleting the provider’s app from your phone as proof that the bank’s authorisation has been revoked; confirm the status in the bank’s own controls.

These steps are complementary rather than interchangeable. A bank-side cancellation is the direct way to address the bank’s permission and token. A provider-side withdrawal lets the service know you no longer want to use the connection. If you only remove the connection inside the provider’s app, check the bank dashboard afterward; if you only cancel it at the bank, check the provider’s account settings and request deletion separately if needed.
What permissions should I check before confirming cancellation?
Review the connection’s scope before you revoke it so you know what was authorised and whether there may be payment activity to check. The exact details depend on the consent and what the bank displays.
- Accounts: Check which accounts are included, rather than assuming the connection covers only the one you usually view in the app.
- Data categories: Look for access to balances and transaction history, and note any other data categories shown.
- Payment initiation: Determine whether the service could initiate payments, or whether it had read-only account-information access. Review recent transactions and any payment instructions if payment rights were included.
- Duration or expiry: Note the consent’s stated expiry. A future expiry is not a reason to wait if you want access to stop now.
- Provider identity: Check the legal entity named in the bank’s dashboard, especially if the app uses a different consumer-facing name.
A permission to view account information is not the same as permission to initiate payments. If the consent includes payment initiation, review recent transactions and relevant payment instructions as well as the connection status. Cancelling access is not a substitute for checking activity that may already have occurred.
For UK providers, Open Banking UK directs customers to its directory or the FCA register to check whether a provider is authorised or registered. Which? also describes bank authorisation dashboards as a place to see firms and the permissions granted. These checks help assess a provider before connecting; they do not replace withdrawing an existing consent.
How does revoking an open-banking or OAuth-style API connection work?
For a regulated account-information or payment-initiation connection, the consent record and access token are the key control points. Open Banking UK’s Account and Transaction API Profile v4.0 says a customer may revoke consent at any time; the provider must cease API access and send the cancellation to the bank, while a bank-side revocation should revoke or expire the access token.

In practical terms, withdrawing consent should prevent the provider from continuing to make authorised API calls using that consent. The service may then stop refreshing balances, reading transactions, verifying an account, initiating payments, or performing another connected function, depending on its role and the permission granted. HSBC warns that cancellation may affect the service.
For a non-bank API or a developer integration, the bank’s open-banking dashboard may not control the connection. Use the service’s own page for Authorized apps, Developer tokens, API keys, Sessions, or Connected services. Revoke each relevant token or integration individually. If a secret may have been exposed, rotate it as well as revoking the affected credential. Labels, behaviour, and guarantees vary by API operator; there is no single cross-service control.
After revoking a token, check that the service no longer lists the connection as authorised, where it provides that status. If the service has separate tokens or integrations for different accounts or functions, review and revoke each one you no longer want active. Do not assume that cancelling an open-banking consent also removes an unrelated API key, remembered session, or integration managed by another service.

What if I typed my bank username and password into the app?
Treat that differently from a consent-based flow that sends you to authenticate with your bank. If a third party received your bank username and password, changing the connection’s consent does not change those credentials. Change your bank password directly with the bank, enable two-factor authentication if available, and review security alerts and account activity.
Bank of America says secure data-sharing protocols avoid giving credentials to the third party. It warns that a service holding those credentials can have the same access as the customer and may continue access even when the service is no longer actively used. If you shared a password, take these steps:
- Use the bank’s official app or website to change the password. Do not use a password-reset link from an unexpected message.
- Enable two-factor authentication and make sure the bank has current contact details so you can receive security alerts.
- Review recent sign-ins, security alerts, and remembered devices or browser sessions. Sign out or remove sessions you do not recognise if the bank provides that option.
- Check recent transactions, scheduled payments, beneficiaries, and new payees. Look for any payment the app could have initiated.
- Review changes to email forwarding or account notifications, which could hide or redirect security messages.
- If you find an unauthorised payment or cannot identify the service, call the number on your bank card or type the bank’s official web address yourself and contact it there.
Changing the bank password is the safest response when credentials were shared, but it should not replace checking the consent dashboard and withdrawing the app’s access. If you used the same password elsewhere, change it on those accounts too; do not reuse the new bank password.
A consent-based redirect is different: you are sent to the bank to authenticate, and the third-party service should not receive your bank password as part of that secure data-sharing flow. If you are unsure which type of connection you used, treat it cautiously. Check the provider and bank records, change the bank password if you entered it into the third-party service, and contact the bank through an official channel if you cannot tell whether credentials were exposed.

No. Revocation is intended to stop continuing access; it is not the same as deleting historical data. The Open Banking UK API profile describes stopping API access and revoking or expiring the access token, while Bank of America notes that a provider may retain data it already received under its own privacy and retention rules.

If you want previously shared information erased, make a separate deletion request to the provider and check its privacy and retention terms for what it says it can delete or must retain. Do not assume that removing the connection, closing the app, or deleting its icon from your phone also deletes information held by the provider.
When contacting the provider, be clear that you want both the connection stopped and any eligible information deleted. Ask it to confirm that it has ceased using the connection and explain what data, if any, it will retain under its stated rules. Keep a copy of the request and response. Revocation and a deletion request address different things, so completing one does not automatically complete the other.
What does revocation not cancel or change?
Disconnecting a data connection is narrower than ending every relationship with a service. It can stop a connected feature from working, but it does not automatically cancel contracts or resolve transactions already made.
- Service features: Budgeting, account verification, payment initiation, or automatic switching may stop functioning when the relevant data or payment permission is withdrawn.
- Contracts and subscriptions: Cancelling a connection does not by itself cancel a loan, subscription, repayment obligation, or other contract. Follow the provider’s separate cancellation process and check the applicable contract.
- Past activity: Review any payment or other instruction that was already initiated; revocation should not be treated as reversing completed activity.
- Future reconnection: A provider may ask you to authenticate again if you reconnect later. Open Banking UK’s API profile describes the possibility of a new authorisation and token after reconnection.
- Stored data: Previously received information may remain with the provider unless it is deleted under the provider’s process and retention rules.
If you are disconnecting a service tied to a loan, subscription, repayment, or other agreement, check the contract and the provider’s separate cancellation instructions. Stopping the bank connection may affect how that service works, but it does not by itself end an obligation you have already agreed to.
What if the connection still appears active after I revoke it?
First, distinguish between a connection that is still listed for reference and one whose status remains active. Check the status shown by the bank, keep any cancellation confirmation, and contact the bank if it has not recorded the withdrawal or if you cannot tell whether access has stopped.
Then check the provider’s own account settings. A bank-side cancellation may stop authorised access while the provider still displays an old connection or asks you to reconnect. Do not approve a new authentication if your aim is to keep the service disconnected. If the provider says access is still active, ask it to confirm that it has stopped using the connection and separately request deletion if that is what you want.
If the app is no longer available, you cannot access your provider account, or the bank does not show the service by the name you recognise, give the bank the provider name and any details shown in the consent dashboard and ask it to identify or revoke the authorisation. For a suspected credential exposure or unauthorised payment, contact the bank promptly using an official channel rather than waiting for the provider to respond.

When you contact the bank, explain that you want the open-banking or third-party authorisation cancelled, identify the provider as it appears in the dashboard if possible, and ask how you can verify the status afterward. If the bank has a confirmation number or written message, save it. If the connection remains active according to the bank, ask what additional step is needed to stop access rather than relying on the provider’s app display alone.

How can I avoid granting access to the wrong service?
Before approving a new connection, check who will receive access, what it covers, and how long it lasts. Open Banking UK says access is explicit rather than automatic: a provider should not get access unless you authorise it.
- Compare the legal entity on the bank authorisation screen with the service you intended to connect.
- For a UK provider, check its status through the Open Banking UK directory or FCA register.
- Read the data categories, account list, any payment-initiation permission, and the consent duration shown before confirming.
- Review the provider’s privacy and retention information so you know how it handles data already received.
- If the service asks you to type your bank password into the service instead of redirecting you to authenticate with the bank, stop and verify the provider independently.
Open Banking UK’s guidance is that customers choose when and for how long they share data. The bank’s authorisation screen is therefore an important point to check the actual provider and scope—not just the app’s description of what it needs.
For a UK connection, Open Banking UK says customers can check whether a firm is authorised or registered through its directory or the FCA register. Which? describes the bank’s authorisation dashboard as a way to review the firms and permissions associated with an account. These resources help you assess a connection, but the consent screen remains the place to confirm the specific accounts, data, duration, and payment rights being requested.
Frequently asked questions
Can I revoke open-banking access if I no longer have the app?
Try the bank’s online banking or mobile app first, since the consent may still be listed there even if you removed the provider app. If you cannot identify or cancel it, contact the bank through an official channel and ask it to locate the authorisation.
Will revoking access reverse a payment the app already made?
Revocation is for stopping continuing access; it should not be treated as reversing a payment that has already been initiated or completed. If a transaction is unauthorised, contact your bank promptly using the number on your card or its official website.
Can I reconnect the same budgeting app later?
Usually reconnection requires you to authenticate and grant a new authorisation; the previous consent does not have to be restored. Read the new permission screen carefully before approving it.
Is cancelling the bank consent enough, or should I disconnect in the app too?
Use both controls when you can. The bank-side action addresses its consent or token, while the provider-side withdrawal tells the service to stop using the connection. Confirm the status with the bank, and request deletion separately if you want data already received removed.

Does revoking access cancel my subscription or loan?
No. Disconnecting the bank account does not automatically cancel a subscription, loan, repayment obligation, or other contract. Use the provider’s separate cancellation process and check the applicable agreement.
How do I revoke access to a non-bank API?
Use the service’s own authorized-apps, developer-token, API-key, sessions, or connected-services controls. Revoke each relevant token or integration individually, and rotate any exposed secret. The exact process depends on the API operator.
