Review a large AI-generated pull request as untrusted code, not as a trustworthy implementation. Before approval, define the intended behavior and file scope, inspect the complete repository diff, run independent tests and static checks, examine dependencies and packaging, and trace security-sensitive data flows. Passing tests are necessary but not sufficient: a generated change can alter CI, lockfiles, deployment scripts, or tests while leaving the main test suite green. The person who merges the change remains accountable for its behavior and security. A safe review is therefore a staged process that combines repository context, deterministic automation, focused human reasoning, and an explicit record of residual risk.
Why does an AI-generated pull request require a different review posture?
AI-generated code can contain ordinary defects as well as plausible-looking vulnerabilities, invented dependencies, and edits outside the requested task. The model may optimize for a passing local example rather than the repository’s long-term contracts. OpenAI’s 2025 guidance, A Practical Approach to Verifying Code at Scale, states: “We cannot assume that code-generating systems are trustworthy or correct; we must check their work.”
Human accountability does not move to the model, the pull-request author, or the CI system. The maintainer approving the merge owns the resulting behavior, supply-chain exposure, and operational impact. OWASP’s secure-coding guidance is explicit that every file in an agent-generated pull request should be reviewed individually and that no AI-generated code is exempt from code review, security scanning, or testing.

A conventional review may concentrate on the requested function, while an AI agent can silently modify configuration, tests, generated artifacts, or installation behavior. Your process must make those changes visible before you decide whether the core implementation is sound.

How do I freeze the intended scope before reading the diff?
Write a short change contract first. It gives reviewers a reference point for separating required work from unrelated or risky edits.
Record the behavior that must change
- Describe the user-visible outcome in one or two sentences.
- List public functions, classes, endpoints, command-line interfaces, schemas, or configuration keys whose behavior may change.
- Identify inputs, outputs, state transitions, external services, and data stores involved in the flow.
- State compatibility expectations, including supported Python versions, existing callers, serialized formats, and error behavior.
- Write performance expectations such as latency, memory, throughput, or batch-size limits when they matter.
Define an expected file boundary
List the modules, tests, documentation, configuration, and migration files that should be touched. Mark files that must not change, such as deployment manifests, credentials, release automation, or unrelated packages. This is not a prediction of what the agent actually edited; it is the review boundary against which the complete change is compared.
Turn ambiguity into review questions
If the request does not specify behavior for malformed input, retries, timeouts, empty collections, concurrent calls, or partial failure, record those as questions rather than letting the generated implementation choose silently. Unresolved questions become explicit merge blockers or documented assumptions.

How can I build a complete inventory of the change?
Do not rely on the pull-request summary or a rendered diff alone. Build an inventory that includes tracked, untracked, renamed, generated, and ignored files that could affect the build or runtime.
- Start from a clean working tree or a fresh checkout of the proposed commit. Save any unrelated local work elsewhere.
- Inspect the status and summary, then list names and change types:
git status --short
git diff --stat origin/main...HEAD
git diff --name-status origin/main...HEAD
git ls-files --others --exclude-standard
- Review the full patch, including rename detection and binary or generated-file notices:
git diff --find-renames --find-copies origin/main...HEAD
- Compare the inventory with the scope contract. Flag every file that has no clear reason to change.
- Open changed files individually, even when a summary says they are generated or mechanical. Verify how they are produced and whether the source file changed as expected.
Pay special attention to pyproject.toml, setup.py, lockfiles, Dockerfiles, Makefiles, CI workflows, deployment scripts, migration files, fixtures, and test configuration. OWASP identifies out-of-scope edits and automatically executed files as recurring agent-review failure modes.
What repository context should I read before judging the implementation?
A diff has meaning only in the architecture around it. Read enough of the repository to understand local contracts before deciding whether a line is correct.

- Read the README and contributor guidance, including any
AGENTS.mdor equivalent repository rules. - Inspect neighboring modules and the public APIs they expose. Look for established naming, error, logging, transaction, and resource-management conventions.
- Read configuration files, fixtures, factories, and test utilities that define expected environments.
- Check recent history for the code being changed. Earlier fixes often reveal compatibility constraints or deliberately preserved edge-case behavior.
- Identify the supported Python versions, optional extras, operating systems, and deployment targets from the project’s own metadata and CI matrix.
Repository-aware review is stronger than isolated-file review because it exposes assumptions about callers, configuration, and data flow. OpenAI’s verification guidance reports that repository access and code execution improve review quality compared with diff-only inspection.

Which automated checks should run first?
Run deterministic checks independently of the generating agent and run them early enough that failures shape the human review. Use the project’s documented commands when they exist; the following are common Python entry points, not substitutes for repository-specific tooling.
| Check | Typical command | What it establishes | What it cannot establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tests | python -m pytest |
Known behavioral scenarios pass in the current environment. | Unspecified cases, weakened tests, and production-only failures. |
| Linting | ruff check . or the project’s configured linter |
Configured style and many common correctness rules hold. | Business correctness or secure data flow. |
| Formatting | ruff format --check . or the configured formatter |
Formatting is reproducible and does not create noisy diffs. | Whether the formatted code is logically correct. |
| Type checking | mypy . or the repository’s type-check command |
Declared type contracts are consistent where annotations and configuration permit. | Runtime values, dynamic code, or missing annotations. |
| Security analysis | Repository-configured CodeQL, SAST, and dependency jobs | Known patterns and configured vulnerability rules are checked. | Novel exploit paths and context-specific authorization errors. |
| Dependency scanning | Repository-configured lockfile and vulnerability scanner | Package versions, advisories, and policy violations are surfaced. | Whether a newly added package is necessary or trustworthy in context. |
Run the project’s full test suite, not only tests adjacent to the changed module. GitHub’s review guidance recommends functional checks first and cites CodeQL and Dependabot as examples of complementary security and dependency controls. Record the exact commit, environment, commands, and results so another reviewer can reproduce them.
How should I review behavior and compatibility after the checks run?
Trace each changed path from input to output instead of reading only the newly added lines. Start with the public entry point, follow validation and transformation, then inspect persistence, network calls, side effects, and returned errors.
Check the normal path
- Does the implementation solve the stated problem rather than a nearby one?
- Are values normalized and validated at the boundary where they enter the system?
- Are return types, status codes, exceptions, and logging consistent with existing callers?
- Are retries, timeouts, transactions, and cleanup handled in the same layer as comparable code?
Check failure and edge paths
- Empty, null, malformed, oversized, duplicate, and unexpected values.
- Partial failures in batches or multi-step operations.
- Repeated calls, concurrency, cancellation, and process restarts.
- Unavailable services, slow responses, exhausted resources, and corrupted local state.
- Backward compatibility for old records, API clients, command options, and serialized data.
Look for changes that make failures appear successful, catch broad exceptions without preserving diagnostics, mutate shared state unexpectedly, or alter ordering and idempotency. Compare the generated code with established patterns in neighboring modules; consistency is evidence of a understood contract, not proof by itself.

| Changed area | Questions to ask | Typical risk |
|---|---|---|
| Application modules | Does each change support the requested behavior or a required shared abstraction? | Hidden behavior changes and compatibility breaks. |
| Tests and fixtures | Were cases removed, skipped, or rewritten to match the generated output? | False confidence from a weakened safety net. |
pyproject.toml, setup.py, lockfiles |
Why did metadata, scripts, extras, or versions change? | Different runtime, build, or install behavior. |
| CI workflows and Makefiles | Were checks disabled, reordered, or given broader permissions? | Security and release controls bypassed. |
| Dockerfiles and deployment files | Did base images, users, ports, secrets, or startup commands change? | Privilege escalation or production outage. |
| Generated files and migrations | Is the source-of-truth change present and is regeneration reproducible? | Irreversible schema or artifact drift. |
Require a specific explanation for every out-of-scope file. If the explanation is “the agent changed it automatically,” revert it or split it into a separately reviewed change.
What Python dependency and packaging risks should I inspect?
Review dependency changes as supply-chain changes, even when the feature appears unrelated to packaging.
- Confirm that every new import maps to an intentionally declared package and that the package name is spelled correctly. AI systems can invent names or select a similarly named package.
- Check whether each package is maintained, compatible with the project’s Python versions, and permitted by the project’s license policy.
- Inspect lockfile additions and upgrades, including transitive packages. Ask why an upgrade occurred and whether it changes runtime behavior.
- Examine build-system configuration and install hooks for arbitrary code execution, network access, shell commands, or credential reads.
- Verify that optional dependencies remain optional and that production images do not gain development-only packages.
- Rebuild or install in an isolated environment and compare the resulting dependency graph with the intended one.
Dependency scanners are useful evidence, not a final verdict. A package with no current advisory can still be unnecessary, abandoned, deceptively named, or overly privileged. Require a human explanation of the package’s purpose and removal path.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →How can I tell whether the tests are meaningful?
A green suite is evidence only when its tests remain independent, representative, and capable of failing for the defects you care about.
- Look for deleted tests, newly skipped tests, relaxed assertions, changed expected values, and reduced parameter sets.
- Check whether mocks replace the system under test or merely verify that a mock was called. A test that mocks the new logic can pass while the real integration is broken.
- Compare fixtures and factories for silent changes to permissions, authentication, time, locale, database state, or network responses.
- Ensure tests exercise failure paths, authorization boundaries, malformed input, and compatibility cases identified in the scope contract.
- Run a targeted test against the pre-change implementation or a known counterexample when practical. The purpose is to show that the test can actually detect the defect class.
OWASP and GitHub both emphasize that testing must complement review. Do not accept tests that simply assert the behavior the generated code happened to produce without checking the original requirement.
What security review is required before merging AI-written Python?
Perform a threat-oriented pass over every path that handles untrusted input or privileged effects. Generic linting cannot replace reasoning about who can trigger an operation and what that operation can reach.

Trace high-risk boundaries
- Authentication and authorization: verify identity, role, tenant, object ownership, and denial behavior independently.
- Filesystem access: check path traversal, symlink handling, permissions, temporary files, and unintended overwrite or deletion.
- Subprocess execution: inspect command construction, argument boundaries, shell usage, environment inheritance, and timeouts.
- Network calls: validate destinations, certificates, redirects, response limits, retries, and SSRF exposure.
- Deserialization: restrict formats and classes, validate sizes, and reject untrusted executable content.
- Secrets: ensure tokens and keys are not logged, committed, exposed in exceptions, or passed to untrusted processes.
Validate suspected vulnerabilities safely
Threat-model the suspected exploit path, then reproduce it in an isolated environment with non-production data and credentials. Confirm both the vulnerable behavior and the proposed fix, including regression coverage. Human review is mandatory for patches affecting authentication, authorization, cryptography, CI/CD, deployment, or data migrations; require a second reviewer for those paths.
OWASP’s DevSecOps guidance states that AI-generated code is not exempt from security scanning, testing, or code review. Treat a clean scanner result as one signal among several, not as authorization to merge.
How should repository rules and CI encode the lessons?
Put stable constraints where future agents and contributors will see them. Repository guidance such as AGENTS.md can record supported versions, data-handling rules, compatibility requirements, sensitive files, required checks, and commands for local validation.
Validate each rule with three cases
- A triggering case that should fail or require a warning.
- A safe counterexample that should pass without an exception.
- An unrelated change proving the rule does not create noisy false positives.
Keep deterministic formatting, tests, type checks, security analysis, and dependency checks in CI so they do not depend on an agent remembering instructions. Protect sensitive paths with required approvals and prevent a generated change from weakening the workflows that enforce those rules.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which review approach gives the right coverage?
Choose controls by risk, not by the apparent size of the diff. A short change to authorization or build configuration can need more scrutiny than a large, isolated refactor.
| Review approach | Coverage | Independence | Security depth | When it is acceptable |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Diff-only inspection | Changed hunks and summary | Usually low | Generic, shallow | Only as a first orientation step, never as the sole approval basis. |
| Repository-aware review | Diff plus APIs, configuration, history, tests, and deployment context | Moderate to high when checks run outside the agent | Can include threat modeling and exploit validation | Default for large or security-relevant changes. |
| Automated checks only | Configured scenarios and rules | High for repeatability | Limited by rule coverage | Useful gate, never a replacement for human review. |
| Risk-based two-person review | Repository-aware plus independent approval | High | Deepest for sensitive paths | Authentication, authorization, cryptography, CI/CD, deployment, and migrations. |
Evaluate any proposed process on coverage, independence, security depth, scope control, supply-chain visibility, repeatability, and human accountability. The strongest workflow combines all seven rather than optimizing one metric.

What should the final merge record contain?
Make the decision auditable. A reviewer should be able to understand what was checked, what remains uncertain, and why the remaining risk is acceptable.
- The intended behavior, interfaces, data flows, performance expectations, and allowed file scope.
- The complete changed-file inventory and explanations for exceptions.
- Exact test, lint, format, type, security, and dependency commands, with commit and environment details.
- Evidence that tests were not deleted, skipped, or weakened without justification.
- Dependency names, version changes, license decisions, and build-script findings.
- Security-sensitive paths examined, threat-model assumptions, isolated reproductions, and regression tests.
- Known limitations, deferred work, owners, and a date or condition for reassessment.
- Named reviewers, including the second approval required for sensitive changes.
Approve only when the implementation satisfies the contract, every changed file has a reason, independent checks provide meaningful evidence, and residual risk is consciously accepted. If any of those conditions is missing, request changes, narrow the patch, or split the pull request before merging.
What is a practical review sequence for a very large change?
Use this order to reduce wasted effort while preserving safety.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Freeze the intended behavior, interfaces, constraints, and expected file boundary.
- Inventory all tracked, untracked, renamed, generated, configuration, packaging, and deployment changes.
- Read repository guidance, neighboring modules, public APIs, fixtures, configuration, and relevant history.
- Run the full deterministic test suite and configured lint, format, type, security, and dependency checks.
- Review changed behavior from inputs through outputs, including failure paths and backward compatibility.
- Audit every file for scope, especially tests, lockfiles, build scripts, CI workflows, and generated artifacts.
- Inspect dependencies, installation behavior, licenses, versions, and transitive changes.
- Threat-model and isolate-test security-sensitive findings; obtain a second reviewer where required.
- Record evidence, uncertainty, and the explicit merge decision.
This sequence prevents a polished implementation or a green test badge from hiding a changed contract, weakened test, unsafe package, or privileged workflow edit.
How should I respond when the review finds a problem?
Classify the finding before fixing it so the response matches the risk.
- Scope violation: revert the unrelated file or split it into a separately reviewed pull request.
- Behavior defect: add a failing regression test, correct the implementation, and rerun the complete checks.
- Weak test: restore the original assertion or scenario and prove that it fails against an appropriate counterexample.
- Dependency concern: remove the package, replace it with an approved dependency, or document a reviewed exception with version and license rationale.
- Security finding: stop approval, reproduce safely, threat-model the path, implement and test the fix, and obtain the required human review.
- Uncertainty: ask the owner to clarify the contract or provide evidence; do not convert an unanswered question into an assumption.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AI-generated pull request be merged without a human reviewer?
No. Automated checks can detect configured failures, but they cannot assume responsibility for undocumented requirements, architectural compatibility, or novel exploit paths. A human must approve the behavior and the residual risk, with additional approval for sensitive security or deployment changes.
Should I review the agent’s prompt or conversation as part of the code review?
It can explain intent, but it is not evidence that the implementation is correct. Treat the repository, tests, reproducible commands, and changed-file inventory as authoritative; use the prompt only to resolve what the author meant when the contract is ambiguous.
What is the safest way to handle a pull request that is too large to understand at once?
Ask for a split by architectural boundary or risk area, preserving a buildable and testable state in each part. If splitting is impossible, review in slices—scope and configuration first, then dependencies, tests, behavior, and security—and require a written inventory so no file is skipped.
Should generated files be excluded from review because they will be regenerated?
No. Verify that the source-of-truth change is present, regeneration is reproducible, and the generated output contains no unexpected paths or executable content. Until that relationship is proven, the generated file is part of the change and can affect builds or deployments.
