Review three areas of your crypto-exchange account: saved withdrawal destinations, API-key permissions, and active or recent logins. Together, they can reveal whether funds could be sent to an unfamiliar address, whether software has more access than it needs, or whether someone else has entered your account. Use the exchange’s official security and account pages, work through each list, and act promptly if you find an entry you cannot explain.
What should an exchange security review cover?
A useful review checks both what is authorized and what has recently happened. A saved address or API key may be legitimate but no longer needed; an unfamiliar login or address change may be a sign of account access you did not approve.
Review these areas together rather than treating a withdrawal whitelist as a complete security check:

- API keys: who or what uses each key, its permissions, recent use, IP restrictions, and expiry, if available.
- Logins and devices: recent login attempts, active or trusted devices, and account changes that could affect security or withdrawals.
- Recovery and authentication: the protections on the exchange account and the email account used to recover it.
Exchange controls differ. A review should therefore establish what the exchange actually allows for your account, not assume that a feature, delay, or permission works the same way everywhere.

How do I review a withdrawal whitelist?
Open the exchange’s official withdrawal-address or address-book area and check every entry against a destination you recognize. Confirm the asset and network as well as the address: a familiar label alone does not establish that the destination is correct.
Work through the address list
- Navigate to the exchange’s official account pages yourself. Find its withdrawal-address, address-book, or security controls; the exact labels and layout vary by exchange.
- Record each saved address, asset, network, label, and date added. If the exchange offers an export, use it only through its official interface; otherwise, make a private manual record.
- For each entry, ask whether you recognize the destination and still need it. Check the full address and network against your own trusted records rather than relying on a label or a message claiming to confirm it.
- Remove an address you cannot explain, following the exchange’s own process. Review any confirmation or waiting period it displays before attempting a withdrawal.
- Check whether address allowlisting is enabled and what the exchange says that setting does. A list of saved addresses is not necessarily the same thing as a rule that blocks withdrawals to every other address.
Pay attention to the date an address was added. A new entry that you did not create deserves prompt investigation, particularly if it appears alongside an unfamiliar login, a changed password, or an unexpected security-setting change.
Why address holds matter
Some exchanges delay withdrawals to newly added destinations, while others make a new destination available sooner depending on the setting. A hold can provide time to notice an unauthorized change, but its duration and conditions are exchange-specific; do not assume it makes an unfamiliar address harmless or that every withdrawal is delayed.

Binance’s 2025 guidance says its withdrawal whitelist can restrict withdrawals to whitelisted addresses. It also describes a whitelist withdrawal limit for newly added addresses: disabling that limit can make new addresses immediately usable. Binance reported support for 200 withdrawal addresses in 2025; that is a dated, exchange-specific figure, not a general limit for other exchanges.

Coinbase Exchange’s help documentation describes withdrawals restricted to Address Book entries and a 48-hour hold after its initial window. Kraken says a newly added address must be confirmed and may be subject to a 24-hour hold after a password change if sign-in two-factor authentication or a Master Key is not in use. Crypto.com documents a 24-hour lock on newly added addresses. These are separate exchange policies; check the current account flow and official documentation for the account you are reviewing.
How can I tell whether an API key can withdraw funds?
Inspect the permissions assigned to every API key; a key’s name does not tell you what it can do. In particular, check separately whether it can withdraw funds and whether it can add, remove, or otherwise manage withdrawal addresses.
Make an API-key inventory
- Open the exchange’s official API-management page and list every key that appears.
- For each key, record its owner or intended application, last-use information, permissions, IP restrictions, and expiry where the exchange exposes them.
- Compare the permissions with the key’s actual purpose. A service that only needs to read account information should not have trading or withdrawal-related access.
- Revoke keys that are unused, unrecognized, or no longer needed. If you cannot identify a key’s owner, do not keep it active merely because its label looks familiar.
- Review the exchange’s activity log for key use that does not match the expected application, timing, or IP restriction.
Kraken’s support guidance makes an important distinction: “The Add Withdrawal Addresses permission allows an API key to add and remove withdrawal addresses.” Kraken warns that combining this permission with Withdraw Funds can allow a compromised key to add an attacker-controlled address and withdraw assets. Its recommendation is to avoid enabling both permissions on one key unless absolutely necessary.
Where the exchange supports it, separate keys by function instead of giving one key broad access. Use read-only access for monitoring, trading permissions only for a trading integration, and withdrawal-related permissions only when the application genuinely requires them. Add IP restrictions and an expiry when available, and review use periodically. These controls reduce unnecessary access, but they do not make a key safe to disclose.

Binance’s account-security guidance says, “Keep your API keys safe as if they are your password,” and advises removing unnecessary API access. Treat a key as a credential: do not send it to someone who contacts you, include it in screenshots, or expose it in a shared document or support conversation.
How do I review active login sessions and devices?
Use the exchange’s official login-history, device-management, or session controls to identify access you recognize and remove access you do not. Review account changes alongside login records, because an attacker may change security settings or withdrawal details after signing in.
Check access and account changes
- Open the exchange’s official security or device page and inspect recent login attempts, trusted devices, and active sessions where those details are available.
- Compare entries with your own activity, including device, location, and timing when shown. Treat an unfamiliar entry as a reason to investigate rather than assuming the displayed location is conclusive on its own.
- Review recent password and two-factor-authentication changes, address-book edits, and withdrawals. Look for changes you did not initiate or events that do not fit your own timeline.
- Use the exchange’s own control to sign out or revoke an unrecognized session or device if it provides one. Follow its official support or account-disable route if you suspect unauthorized access.
Binance says it provides a log of login attempts and account actions. Binance.US documents Device Management and an account-disable control. The available records and controls are not identical across these services or across exchanges, so use the options shown in your own account rather than relying on a generic menu path.

What should I do if I find something suspicious?
Use the exchange’s official account-security controls immediately, and do not wait to finish a routine review if funds or access may be at risk. A suspicious session, address, or key can require different actions, but the priority is to contain access through the exchange’s own process.
- From a trusted device, use the official exchange website or app that you open directly, not a link in an unsolicited message.
- Use the exchange’s disable, freeze, or account-security process if available, or contact support through its official channel. Binance and Binance.US document security or account-disable controls; the exact route depends on the service.
- Revoke unfamiliar sessions and API keys, and remove unauthorized withdrawal addresses where the exchange permits it. Follow any identity checks or confirmation steps the exchange requires.
- Change the exchange password and secure the linked email account. Review authentication settings and re-enroll a passkey or authenticator-based two-factor method if compromise is suspected.
- Check the activity history for withdrawals and security changes, and follow the exchange’s instructions for reporting unauthorized activity.
Do not accept help from a person who asks you to reveal a password, API key, two-factor code, or to share your screen. Use only support routes reached through the exchange’s official app or website.

Compare the actual protections and recovery options shown in each exchange’s official documentation and account interface. A feature name alone is not enough: a whitelist with no meaningful withdrawal restriction, or an API key with combined address-management and withdrawal powers, may not provide the separation you expect.

How often should I review these settings?
Review the controls whenever you add a withdrawal destination, create or connect an API key, change authentication, or receive an alert about account access. Also make a periodic check so unused keys and obsolete addresses do not remain authorized by default.
Keep a private inventory that identifies each address’s purpose and each API key’s owner or application. Avoid putting secrets such as passwords, API keys, or authentication codes in that record. If an entry no longer has a clear owner or need, remove or revoke it through the exchange’s official controls.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I tell whether an unfamiliar login came from a VPN or a traveling device?
A location shown in an exchange login record is a clue, not definitive proof of who signed in; network routing and travel can make locations appear unexpected. Compare the time and device details with your own activity, and contact the exchange through its official channel if you still cannot account for the event.

Should I use a passkey or an authenticator app for exchange sign-in?
Either can strengthen sign-in compared with relying only on a password, but the options depend on the exchange and your devices. Choose a method supported by the exchange, and make sure you understand its recovery procedure before replacing an existing method.
Does a withdrawal whitelist protect me if someone gets into my exchange account?
It can constrain where withdrawals go only when the exchange enforces the restriction and the setting is enabled. It does not by itself prevent account access, unauthorized API activity, or changes to the list, so review those controls as well.
