To remove something an AI agent remembers, do more than delete a chat. First inspect the product’s memory controls, correct or delete the stored item, remove the chat or file that supplied it, and then test in a new conversation. Turning memory off usually stops future use or creation but does not erase existing chats or saved memories.
The exact controls differ by product, plan, region, platform, and workspace. The procedure below covers the documented controls for ChatGPT, Claude, and Microsoft Copilot Studio, while separating a visible memory entry from copies that may remain in source data or short-term safety logs.
What an AI agent “remembers”
Memory is a product feature that stores selected facts or topics so later conversations can be more relevant. It is separate from the model’s general training knowledge and is not necessarily a transcript of everything you have said. A service may expose a short summary, individual saved memories, topic records, project memories, or links back to source conversations.

That distinction explains the most common surprise: deleting a conversation is not the same operation as deleting a saved memory created from it. OpenAI’s Help Center explicitly warns that deleting a chat alone does not necessarily delete a separate saved memory created from that chat. A complete removal request therefore has two targets: the memory record and every source copy you can identify.

A memory screen is also not guaranteed to be a complete inventory. OpenAI describes its memory summary as high-level and says it may omit details or source links. Treat what you see as the product’s review surface, not as proof that no other data exists.
Before you change anything: define the result you want
Use the least destructive control that meets your goal. These outcomes are different:
- Stop future personalization: pause or turn off memory. Existing chats and, in some products, existing memory entries remain.
- Fix a wrong fact: edit the item in the memory interface or state the correction explicitly in a conversation.
- Remove one remembered item: delete that saved memory or topic.
- Remove every stored memory: use the product’s reset or delete-all control, understanding that the scope may include project memories.
- Prevent a new persistent record: use Temporary Chat or an incognito mode before sharing sensitive information.
- Seek full removal: delete the memory record and the chats, files, and connected-app copies that supplied it, then verify in a fresh test.
Step 1: inspect the memory surface
Start with the product’s own settings rather than guessing what it knows. Availability and labels can vary by plan, region, device, and organization policy.

- Open Settings.
- Select Personalization.
- Open Memory.
- Review the memory summary, saved memories, and any source links the interface provides.
The summary is intentionally high-level. If a source link is available, open it to identify the conversation or other material that contributed the memory. The absence of a source link does not establish that no source copy exists.
Claude
- Open Settings.
- Select Your Claude, then Manage.
- Read the individual memory topics shown there.
Older versions of the interface may place these controls under Memory or Capabilities. The product’s labels can change, so look for the area that lists memory topics rather than relying on a screenshot from another account.

Microsoft Copilot Studio
Copilot Studio documents two review routes: ask the agent conversationally about its memory, or use the dedicated memory portal. The portal is the better audit surface when you need to inspect individual records and apply deletion controls. Workspace administrators can impose rules that are not visible to an individual user.
Step 2: correct a wrong memory
Correct the record before deleting related material if you still want the agent to retain an accurate version. Make the replacement unambiguous: identify the old fact, state that it is wrong, and provide the exact new fact.

Using an item-level editor
When a product displays an edit control beside a saved memory or topic, change the value in that control and save it. Reopen the memory view to confirm that the revised wording is displayed. Keep the correction narrow; replacing a single field is less likely to remove useful, unrelated context.
Correcting conversationally
If no editor is available, tell the agent plainly that a remembered fact is incorrect and give the replacement. Claude documents that conversational updates apply to the next conversation. OpenAI documents correction through the memory summary or saved-memory controls; where those controls are available, use them so the change is visible in the memory list.
Do not assume that a correction rewrites every historical message. It changes the memory item used for future personalization, while the original statement may still exist in a chat, uploaded file, or connected service.

Step 3: delete one memory or perform a full reset
Delete one item
In the memory manager, choose the individual saved memory or topic and select its delete option. Confirm the action, then refresh or reopen the page to make sure the item no longer appears. Copilot Studio provides deletion through its memory portal. ChatGPT and Claude expose individual memory controls in the settings areas described above.

Use a full reset only when you intend to remove the entire stored memory set. Claude documents that its reset permanently deletes all memories, including project memories. A reset can remove useful personalization along with the sensitive item, so export or record anything you need before confirming.
Do not equate a reset with erasing source material. A reset targets the product’s stored memory entries; it does not automatically delete every chat, file, or connected-app record that contained the same information.
Step 4: remove the source copies
After deleting or correcting the memory entry, trace where the information came from. Remove the originating material when your objective is full removal:
- Chats: delete the conversation that supplied the fact, including archived conversations if the product treats them as retained data.
- Files: remove uploaded documents from the product’s file area or Library, not just from the message that referenced them.
- Connected apps: revoke or delete the relevant record in the connected service when the agent imported information from it.
- Project or workspace stores: check project-level memories and organization-managed repositories separately.
OpenAI states that deleting a chat alone may leave a separate saved memory, which is why the memory entry and the source need separate checks. Conversely, deleting a memory entry does not remove the chat or file that originally contained the fact.

Pause, turn off, reset, and temporary modes are not interchangeable

OpenAI’s Help Center summarizes the choice this way: “Memory is always optional: review, update, or delete saved memories, or turn it off entirely.” The important qualification is that optional use and historical deletion are separate controls.
Step 5: verify what changed
- Reopen the memory manager and confirm that the corrected value is shown or the deleted item is absent.
- Check the product’s chat list, archive, Library, project area, and connected-app settings for the source copies you intended to remove.
- Start a completely new conversation. Do not mention the deleted fact or include wording that would reintroduce it.
- Ask a neutral question that would reveal whether the agent is still applying the old personalization. Compare the result with a conversation in which memory is paused, if the product offers that control.
This test is a product check, not proof that every backend copy vanished. OpenAI says deletion updates can take time and that logs of deleted saved memories may be retained for up to 30 days for safety and debugging. A disappearing UI entry therefore should not be presented as instantaneous erasure from every system.

Common failure modes and the right fix
“I deleted the chat, but the agent still mentions it.”
Look for a separate saved memory or topic and delete that entry. Then check archived chats, files, and connected apps. Chat deletion and memory deletion are independent operations in the documented OpenAI workflow.
“I turned memory off, but old personalization remains.”
Turning memory off generally pauses use or creation; it does not necessarily purge stored entries or historical chats. Re-enable the memory manager only long enough to delete the entries you want removed, or use the product’s reset control if you intend to clear everything.

“The memory page is empty, but I am still concerned.”
Check source copies and organization-managed stores. A high-level summary can omit details and source links, and a workspace administrator may control data outside an individual user’s screen. Use a fresh conversation without repeating the fact to test behavior, while recognizing that a behavioral test cannot certify backend erasure.
“The agent learned the wrong replacement again.”
Delete the old memory, remove or correct the source chat or file, and then state one authoritative replacement in a new conversation. If multiple connected sources contain conflicting values, update each one or disconnect the source that should no longer contribute data.
“I need to share sensitive information once.”
Choose a non-persistent mode before sending it: OpenAI Temporary Chat does not create or update memories, and Claude’s incognito chats are not saved to memory or chat history. These modes prevent the documented memory behavior; they are not substitutes for deleting information already present in an account.
A practical deletion checklist
- Record the exact fact, topic, or file you want removed.
- Open the product’s memory settings or portal and inspect the visible record.
- Correct the item if you want an accurate replacement; otherwise delete it.
- Use a full reset only when you want all memories in the documented scope removed.
- Delete the originating chats, archived chats, files, project records, and connected-app copies.
- Pause or disable memory if you do not want new records created while you clean up.
- Verify the memory view after the change.
- Run a fresh conversation test without repeating the deleted information.
- Allow for documented propagation or safety-log delays, and do not claim instantaneous, universal erasure from a missing UI entry.
What “permanently remove” can and cannot mean
For a user, permanent removal should mean that the visible memory entry is deleted, the source material under the user’s control is removed, and a fresh conversation no longer receives the old personalization. It cannot automatically mean that every transient processing copy, security record, backup, or administrator-controlled workspace store has vanished at the same moment. OpenAI’s documented possibility of retaining deletion logs for up to 30 days is a concrete example of why timing and scope matter.
Use the vendor’s documented reset, deletion, and privacy-request channels when your requirement extends beyond the controls exposed in the product. Phrase the request precisely: identify the memory item, the source conversations or files, the account or workspace, and whether you want an item-level deletion or a complete memory reset.
