Treat AI-generated code as a proposed change, not as trusted software. Before you merge or deploy it, confirm that it meets the original requirement, inspect every changed file, run the project’s normal build and tests, examine dependencies, probe security and edge cases, and add tests the generator did not anticipate. A passing test run is not proof if the tests encode the wrong behavior or were weakened. A human developer who understands the code must make and record the final approval.
This workflow follows GitHub’s review guidance, OWASP secure-coding recommendations, and NIST verification practices. It works for a short function, an AI-authored pull request, or a larger generated feature.
What should I check before using AI-generated code?
Check correctness, security, maintainability, and fit with the project before accepting the change. Start with intent, then move from broad behavior to implementation details and finally to release evidence.
Recommended Free Tools
- Intent and context: Does the change implement the actual requirement, architecture, data model, and user rules?
- Complete diff: Did you inspect every changed source file, test, configuration file, lockfile, generated artifact, and formatting-only edit?
- Executable evidence: Does the project build, pass its existing tests, and pass appropriate linting, static analysis, and security checks?
- Dependencies: Are every new package and API real, maintained, appropriately licensed, and necessary?
- Risk analysis: What happens with malformed input, boundary values, failures, concurrency, permissions, secrets, and hostile users?
- Independent tests: Were tests deleted, skipped, weakened, or replaced with mocks that no longer exercise the real behavior?
- Human ownership: Can a named developer explain the code, accept its risks, and support it after release?
GitHub states that you should “always carefully review and test code generated by Copilot.” The same principle applies to code from any generator: generated syntax is not evidence that the design is right. See GitHub’s review workflow and its agent limitations and responsible-use guidance.

How do I re-establish the requirement and context?
Read the original ticket, acceptance criteria, API contract, and relevant design notes before reading the generated implementation. Write down the expected inputs, outputs, side effects, failure behavior, and non-functional constraints so that the code is judged against a concrete target.
Compare behavior with the request
- Identify which user or business rule each branch is meant to implement.
- Check units, time zones, rounding, ordering, idempotency, and default values explicitly; these are common places where an unstated assumption changes behavior.
- Confirm that authorization and data-ownership rules match the product, not merely the type signatures.
- Look for behavior the prompt never specified, such as silently dropping records, accepting unknown enum values, or retrying a non-idempotent operation.
Compare with the surrounding architecture
Open nearby production code and established patterns. A function can be locally correct yet violate transaction boundaries, error conventions, logging policy, thread-safety assumptions, or layering rules. Check how the project normally validates input, handles configuration, reports errors, and migrates data. If the generated change introduces a new pattern, require a reason and an owner rather than accepting novelty by default.
How do I inspect the complete diff?
Review the change as a set of files and effects, not as the generator’s summary. Start from the version-control diff and follow every reference into configuration, deployment, and tests.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- View the file list and statistics, then open the full patch for each file. For Git,
git diff --statgives a map andgit diffshows the actual edits. - Read additions and deletions together. A removed validation, permission check, assertion, or test may be more important than the new code.
- Inspect lockfiles, generated configuration, database migrations, infrastructure files, scripts, and documentation. A dependency hidden in a lockfile still changes your supply-chain risk.
- Search for changed public interfaces and call sites. Confirm that serializers, clients, jobs, and operational tooling agree on the new contract.
- Run formatting and whitespace checks, but do not treat a clean format check as a correctness review.
- List unrelated edits and scope creep. Ask for each one to be removed or explained before approval.
Do not accept an agent’s verbal summary as a substitute for reading the patch. OWASP’s Secure Coding with AI Cheat Sheet specifically emphasizes reviewing diffs and tests and retaining human ownership.
How do I run functional checks?
Use the project’s documented build and test commands first, then add checks for behavior that the existing suite does not cover. Capture failures and warnings rather than rerunning until the output happens to be green.
- Build or compile: Use the same command as CI or the release process. Fix compiler errors, type errors, generated-code failures, and deprecation warnings before evaluating runtime behavior.
- Run the existing unit and integration suites: Execute the full supported suite, not only tests adjacent to the changed file. Record the exact revision, command, environment, and result.
- Inspect warnings and logs: A successful exit code can hide leaked errors, rejected requests, retries, nondeterminism, or resource exhaustion.
- Run quality and security analysis: Use the project’s linter, type checker, static analyzer, secret detector, dependency scanner, and web-application scanner where applicable. Tools such as CodeQL or Dependabot may be useful examples in GitHub-based projects, but no particular product is mandatory.
- Exercise the feature manually: Try a normal workflow and at least one failure workflow in an environment that resembles production. Check persisted data, emitted events, metrics, and user-visible errors.
- Add missing tests: Design tests from the requirement and threat model, not from the generated implementation. Include assertions that would fail if the code took a tempting but incorrect shortcut.
NIST’s 2024 AI-focused SSDF profile says testing policies can include unit, integration, penetration, red-team, use-case, and adversarial testing. It also calls for scoping tests, performing them, documenting results, and triaging findings and remediation; see NIST SP 800-218A (July 2024).

How should I evaluate new dependencies and APIs?
Assume every new package expands the attack surface and maintenance burden until you verify otherwise. Check the package itself, its transitive dependencies, and the way the generated code uses it.
| Check | Questions to answer | Acceptable evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Existence and identity | Does the package or API actually exist under this name, and is it from the intended registry or vendor? | Official documentation, registry record, and a reproducible install. |
| Maintenance | Is it receiving security fixes and compatible releases? Does its supported runtime match yours? | Recent release and issue history, support policy, and compatibility notes. |
| License | Is the license compatible with your project and distribution model? | License file and an approved legal or compliance review when required. |
| Transitive risk | What other packages, native modules, services, or permissions arrive with it? | Lockfile inspection and dependency or vulnerability scan. |
| Necessity | Could a small, already-approved library or existing platform API do the job? | A short design note comparing the options and operational cost. |
| Usage safety | Does the code configure timeouts, certificate validation, limits, and error handling correctly? | Tests and a manual review of the integration, not just a successful import. |
Be alert to invented package names, plausible-looking APIs, deprecated methods, and version pins that bypass normal policy. A build that downloads a package is not proof that the package is trustworthy or suitable.
What security and edge cases need manual review?
Trace data and control flow from every external input to storage, output, and privileged action. Automated checks are valuable, but a reviewer must decide whether the design creates an exploitable path or violates the system’s security assumptions.
Threat-model the change
- List actors, assets, trust boundaries, entry points, and the worst credible consequence of misuse.
- Ask how an attacker could bypass authentication, escalate authorization, inject data, replay a request, or cause denial of service.
- Verify that secrets, tokens, personal data, and payment or health information are not logged, committed, returned in errors, or exposed through debugging endpoints.
- Check cryptographic choices, key storage, randomness, certificate validation, and comparison operations. Do not accept a custom algorithm merely because it compiles.
Probe input and failure paths
- Use empty, null, malformed, oversized, duplicated, out-of-order, and unexpected-type inputs.
- Test minimum and maximum numeric values, date boundaries, daylight-saving transitions, Unicode, locale differences, and precision or rounding limits where relevant.
- Simulate timeouts, partial responses, unavailable dependencies, expired credentials, retries, and interrupted transactions.
- Exercise concurrent requests, duplicate delivery, cancellation, and process restarts when shared state or asynchronous work is involved.
- Confirm that authorization is checked on every object and operation, not only at the initial route or UI.
NIST IR 8397 recommends a broad verification set: threat modeling, automated testing, static code scanning, heuristic secret detection, built-in checks, black-box and structural tests, historical tests, fuzzing, web-application scanners where applicable, and checks of included libraries, packages, and services. Its scope is deliberately practical: “The document does not address the totality of software verification, but instead recommends techniques that are broadly applicable and form the minimum standards.” Read the NIST IR 8397 guidance.
How do I audit tests written or modified by an AI?
Read tests as production code. A generated test can pass while asserting an incorrect result, exercising only a mock, or preserving a bug introduced in the implementation.
Look for weakened coverage
- Compare the test diff for deleted cases, skipped tests, reduced assertions, broad snapshots, and changed expected values.
- Check that mocks and stubs still allow the real validation, serialization, authorization, and error-handling paths to run.
- Ensure integration tests connect to the real boundary they claim to verify; a mock that returns a perfect response cannot reveal timeout or schema failures.
- Review coverage changes by behavior, not only by percentage. A high line count can miss an untested permission branch.
Add independent negative and adversarial cases
Design at least one test from each important failure mode in the requirement and threat model. Include malformed input, boundary conditions, expired credentials, duplicate requests, unavailable dependencies, and concurrent access where those situations are possible. Use a human-authored expected result so the implementation and test are not simply agreeing with each other.

Which verification method should I use for each risk?
No single check proves that generated code is safe. Choose methods by the defect you are trying to find, when feedback is cheapest, and how much human interpretation the result needs.
| Method | Best at detecting | Typical stage | Human interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unit tests | Incorrect calculations, branching, and local contracts | Local development and CI | High: reviewers must judge whether cases represent the requirement. |
| Integration and use-case tests | Contract mismatches, persistence errors, and service interactions | CI and pre-release | High: failures need environment and data interpretation. |
| Static analysis and type checking | Unsafe patterns, unreachable code, type errors, and some data-flow flaws | Local, review, and CI | Medium to high: findings can be false positives or miss design defects. |
| Dependency and included-library checks | Known vulnerabilities, license conflicts, and unexpected transitive code | Pull request and CI | High: severity, exploitability, and replacement choices require judgment. |
| Secret detection | Hard-coded credentials and accidental sensitive material | Pre-commit, review, and CI | Medium: confirm whether a finding is a real secret and rotate it if exposed. |
| Fuzzing and black-box tests | Parser bugs, malformed input handling, crashes, and unexpected states | CI, scheduled jobs, and pre-release | High: minimize and reproduce failures, then assess impact. |
| Threat modeling and manual review | Design flaws, authorization mistakes, and business-rule misunderstandings | Design, review, and pre-release | Highest: requires domain and security expertise. |
| Penetration or red-team testing | Exploit chains and defenses under adversarial behavior | Pre-release and periodically in production programs | High: findings need triage, remediation, and retesting. |
Use the project’s risk classification to decide which rows are mandatory. A low-risk formatting helper may need unit tests and static checks; authentication, payment, privacy, or infrastructure changes justify threat modeling and adversarial testing.
Can an AI code reviewer replace a human reviewer?
No. An AI reviewer is useful as a second opinion that may surface a missed branch, suspicious dependency, or inconsistent error path, but it can miss defects, produce false positives, misunderstand local context, or suggest an insecure fix.

- Separate findings by severity and reproduce each one against the actual code.
- For every proposed fix, rerun the relevant tests and review the new diff; a generated remediation is another untrusted change.
- Record accepted and rejected findings with a short reason so later reviewers understand the decision.
Human approval means the approver can explain the behavior, limitations, operational impact, and residual risk. If the change is complex or sensitive, involve a teammate with the relevant application or security expertise.
How do I record ownership and approval?
Make the review auditable enough that someone else can reconstruct what was checked and why the change was accepted.
- Identify the requirement, commit or pull request, environment, and generated components.
- Attach build and test results, static-analysis and dependency-scan results, and any manual test data.
- List known limitations, deferred fixes, threat-model decisions, and residual risk.
- Name the developer who understands and owns the code after merge, plus the specialist reviewer for security-sensitive work.
- Record the approval date and the conditions for rollback, feature-flag disablement, or incident response.
For regulated or high-impact systems, keep these records with the change-management evidence required by your organization. The exact retention period depends on your policy and jurisdiction; do not infer one from a generic checklist.

What should block a merge or deployment?
Set explicit gates before the review begins so that a green-looking demo cannot override a known failure.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- The requirement or security impact is still ambiguous.
- Any changed file, generated artifact, dependency, or test has not been inspected.
- The build fails, required tests fail, or warnings indicate an unreviewed behavior change.
- A package, API, license, or transitive dependency cannot be verified.
- Authentication, authorization, input validation, secret handling, or cryptography is uncertain.
- Tests were deleted, skipped, weakened, or coupled so tightly to the implementation that they provide no independent evidence.
- A high-severity scanner or threat-model finding lacks an accepted mitigation.
- No named developer can explain and support the change.
When a gate blocks progress, reduce scope or revert the generated portion rather than lowering the gate. A smaller, understandable change is easier to verify than a broad patch whose failures are hidden by exceptions.
What should I do when the checks fail?
Classify the failure before changing code. The recovery path differs for an incorrect requirement, a defect, an environment problem, and a test that is asserting the wrong behavior.
Build or type failure
Confirm the runtime and dependency versions used by CI, then inspect the smallest failing change. Do not suppress a warning or loosen a type merely to obtain a green build; determine whether the generated API usage is wrong.
Functional test failure
Compare the expected result with the original requirement and nearby established behavior. If the expectation is correct, fix the implementation and add a regression case. If the expectation is wrong, correct the test with an explanation and obtain the required reviewer approval.
Security or dependency finding
Reproduce the issue, identify affected data and reachable paths, and choose a mitigation: remove the dependency, upgrade or pin it, restrict exposure, add validation, or redesign the flow. Rotate any credential that may have been exposed; deleting it from the latest file does not invalidate a secret already committed or logged.

Flaky or environment-specific result
Capture timestamps, platform, concurrency, network conditions, seed, and logs. Make the test deterministic where possible, then decide whether the failure reveals a real production risk. Never mark a security or correctness test as skipped solely because it is inconvenient.
How can I make this workflow efficient without making it shallow?
Scale depth to risk, not to the amount of code. Use automated checks on every change, reserve specialist review and adversarial testing for sensitive paths, and keep a reusable checklist in the pull-request template.
- Ask the generator to explain assumptions and list files it changed, but verify the list against version control.
- Generate a small change first when the requirement is uncertain; smaller diffs expose misunderstandings earlier.
- Run fast formatting, type, unit, and secret checks locally, then let CI perform the complete suite and scans.
- Keep human-written tests for business rules and abuse cases even when routine unit tests are generated.
- Review generated code again after dependency upgrades, model changes, or prompt-driven rewrites; provenance does not make later edits safe.
The goal is not to prove that code came from a human or a machine. It is to establish, with evidence appropriate to the risk, that the proposed change does what the project needs and does not create unacceptable harm.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFrequently Asked Questions
Should I rewrite AI-generated code before merging it?
Not automatically. Keep code that is understandable, idiomatic for the project, and supported by tests and review; rewrite or simplify code when its assumptions, control flow, or maintenance cost cannot be explained. A rewrite still requires the same verification because human-authored replacements can introduce new defects.
How much test coverage is enough for generated code?
There is no universal percentage that proves adequacy. Coverage should include every requirement, failure mode, security boundary, and high-risk integration, with additional tests for cases that could cause data loss, unauthorized access, or financial impact.
Can I deploy generated code behind a feature flag without reviewing it?
A flag limits exposure but does not remove risk: initialization, background jobs, migrations, logging, and permission checks may run before the flag is evaluated. Review and test the disabled path, enablement path, rollback behavior, and any data written while the feature is on.
What evidence should I retain for an AI-assisted change?
Keep the requirement, complete diff, dependency and license decisions, test and scan results, threat-model notes, known limitations, and named approval. Also record the commit or build identifier so the evidence can be tied to the exact artifact that was released.
