AI video editors can make several timeline changes from one natural-language request, so recovery depends on what you need to undo. An action-level Undo reverses a specific operation, an assistant-turn Revert rolls back one AI response when supported, and a saved or published version restores a broader project state. These controls are not interchangeable.
This guide shows how to inspect an AI edit, choose the smallest safe recovery scope, verify the result, and avoid losing later work. It also explains the documented differences between Adobe Premiere, Descript, Runway, and version-history systems.
What is the safest way to review an AI video edit?
Review the result before clicking any recovery control. Play the affected section, inspect the timeline, and compare the current state with the change you requested. Look for altered clip order, trims, transitions, captions, audio levels, effects, or generated media. If the editor exposes an assistant conversation, read the request and the actions associated with it.
In Premiere, Adobe says the assistant’s requests and actions remain in conversation history, the generated work remains editable, and “All actions are added to Premiere’s Undo and History panels.” Adobe’s Premiere AI Assistant overview documents this behavior.

Write down the exact unwanted change before recovering it. For example, “the AI shortened the second interview answer and moved the B-roll clip” is more useful than “undo the AI edit.” Knowing the scope helps you avoid removing edits you intended to keep.
Use a quick review checklist
- Play a few seconds before and after the AI-edited area.
- Check the timeline for moved, trimmed, deleted, or duplicated clips.
- Inspect captions, music, voice-over, color, speed, and transitions separately.
- Read the assistant’s request and response if a conversation panel is available.
- Note any later edits that must remain after recovery.
How do I undo an AI edit?
Use action-level Undo or History when you need to reverse a particular operation, such as a trim, clip deletion, generated transition, or audio adjustment. This is usually the narrowest recovery option, but the exact result depends on how the editor records the AI operation.
Adobe Premiere AI Assistant
Premiere records AI Assistant actions in its ordinary Undo and History systems. Undo assistant work with the same action-level controls used for manual editing, then inspect the timeline and preview. Because the assistant’s work remains editable, you can correct one part rather than abandoning the entire project. Adobe’s official description is available in the Premiere AI Assistant overview.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Premiere’s History panel lets you select a previous action to return to that state. Selecting a dimmed action moves forward again, effectively redoing the actions after it. The panel therefore represents a sequence of project states, not a permanent archive of every edit ever made.
Granular trim recovery in Premiere
Premiere records each trim adjustment separately in the History panel. Entering or leaving Trim mode does not itself create a History entry. If an AI request changed several edit points, this granularity can help identify which trim caused the problem. See Adobe’s trimming-actions documentation.

What action-level Undo can and cannot do
- Best for: one identifiable operation or a small sequence you just reviewed.
- Risk: stepping back too far can remove manual work made after the AI action.
- Persistence: session history may not survive closing and reopening the project.
- Verification: always play the recovered section and inspect downstream edits.
Can I see what the AI changed?
Sometimes. The editor must expose either an action list, a conversation log, or a version comparison. The presence of an AI prompt alone does not guarantee an auditable change list.
Premiere’s conversation and History records
Premiere’s AI Assistant keeps conversation history so you can revisit prior requests and actions. Its Undo and History panels show the resulting editing operations. This combination lets you connect a natural-language request with the concrete timeline changes that followed.
Do not treat the conversation as a complete project archive. Adobe states that the ordinary History panel covers the current project session. “After you close and reopen a project, the previous actions are no longer available in the History panel.” Adobe’s History-panel help page describes that limit.
When an editor gives only a preview
If an editor shows a before-and-after preview but no action list, compare the timeline manually and save a copy before accepting further changes. A visual comparison can reveal the outcome, but it may not tell you whether the AI moved, replaced, or regenerated a clip. That distinction matters when choosing between Undo and version restoration.
How do I revert an AI video edit?
Use a turn-level Revert or Rollback only when the editor explicitly provides one. This control generally targets one assistant response and may remove all changes produced by that response, rather than one individual operation inside it.

Descript Underlord Revert
Descript’s changelog documents a Revert button below an Underlord response. The changelog notes that this replaced an earlier rollback placement, so the location and wording may change in later releases. Underlord conversations are per user and per project; older chats are read-only, while continuing or rolling back is available from the current open chat. Check the current interface before following screenshots or older instructions in third-party guides. The product’s mutable release notes are at Descript’s changelog.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA turn-level revert is useful when one prompt produced a bundle of unwanted edits and you want to remove that bundle together. It is not the same as selecting one trim or clip deletion from a History panel. Before confirming, identify whether the response also included changes you wanted to keep.
Descript’s concurrent-edit merge recovery
Descript also documents a separate recovery path for a concurrent-edit merge error. The alert can offer options to restore, export, compare in a new tab, or dismiss. This is a conflict-recovery workflow, not a general-purpose replacement for Underlord Revert. Choose compare in a new tab when you need to inspect both states before deciding, and export important work if the project contains changes that cannot be recreated easily.
When should I restore an older project version?
Restore a saved or published version when the current project state is broadly damaged, the unwanted changes span many actions, or the action history is no longer available. Version restoration has a wider scope than Undo or an assistant-turn Revert, so preserve the current state before replacing it whenever the editor permits.
Premiere Team Projects published history
Premiere Team Projects use a separate collaborative version-history system. Adobe describes autosave and published versions that collaborators can view or return to; each collaborator publication creates a version. This is version recovery, not the ordinary local session History stack. Details are in Adobe’s Team Projects documentation.

Use a published version when you need to recover a known collaborative checkpoint, such as the state before an AI assistant session. Confirm which publication contains the desired timeline, and tell collaborators which version you are restoring so parallel work is not silently replaced.
Version history as a general pattern
Some creative applications let users preview an older version, restore it, or make a copy instead of overwriting the current design. Canva’s version-history documentation is an example of this pattern; access depends on the user’s role and plan. It is a useful contrast for understanding version recovery, but it is not documentation for an AI video editor. See Canva’s version-history help page.
Undo, Revert, or version restore: which control should I choose?
| Control | What it targets | Record persistence | Typical use | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Undo or History | Individual actions or project states | Often limited to the current session; Premiere’s ordinary History is unavailable after close and reopen | Remove one trim, deletion, transition, or other identifiable operation | Stepping back can remove later manual work |
| Assistant-turn Revert/Rollback | One assistant response and the edits it produced | Depends on the product’s conversation and release behavior | Remove a bundle of changes generated by one prompt | May also remove desirable changes from the same response |
| Saved or published version restore | A complete project checkpoint | Persists as long as the product retains the saved or published version | Recover a broad state after many unwanted edits or a closed session | Can overwrite current work or disrupt collaborators |
| Merge-conflict recovery | A conflicting project state after concurrent edits | Product-specific | Compare, restore, or export after a merge error | Not a substitute for ordinary edit history |
A safe, repeatable recovery workflow
- Stop making new edits. Additional actions can push the unwanted change farther back in the history stack and make the decision harder.
- Identify the recovery scope. Decide whether the problem is one action, one assistant turn, or the entire current project state.
- Preserve the current state. Save a duplicate, publish a checkpoint, export a reference file, or use the editor’s “make a copy” option before broad recovery. The exact option varies by product.
- Inspect the available record. Open the action History, assistant conversation, or published-version list. Check the date, author, request, and surrounding edits where shown.
- Use the smallest matching control. Choose action-level Undo for one operation, Revert for a documented assistant turn, or version restoration for a broad checkpoint recovery.
- Verify the timeline. Play the affected section, inspect clip boundaries and tracks, and check captions, audio, effects, and transitions.
- Check later work. Confirm that edits made after the unwanted AI change remain intact. If they do not, return to the preserved copy and recover more selectively.
- Save or publish the verified result. Create a new checkpoint so you have a known-good state before asking the assistant for another change.
Premiere-specific procedure
Undo a recent AI action
- Review the assistant conversation and identify the request that produced the unwanted result.
- Inspect the Undo or History entries associated with that request.
- Undo the specific operation, or select the appropriate earlier History state.
- Play the affected sequence and confirm that intended later edits remain.
Premiere’s History panel is session-scoped. If you closed and reopened the project, the prior entries are no longer available there, so use a saved project copy or a Team Projects published version instead.
Recover a collaborative Team Project
- Open the project’s published-version history rather than relying on the local History panel.
- Identify the publication created before the unwanted AI changes.
- Review the version and coordinate with collaborators before returning to it.
- Restore or return to that published version, then verify the timeline and publish a new checkpoint.
Descript-specific considerations
For an Underlord response, look for the current Revert control associated with that response. Read the result first: a single response may have changed several parts of the project. If a concurrent-edit merge alert appears, use its restore, export, compare-in-a-new-tab, or dismiss choices according to whether you need to preserve both states.
Because Descript’s changelog records interface changes, treat older instructions as directional rather than guaranteed navigation. The current control label and placement take precedence.

What Runway documents—and what it does not
Runway’s AI video editor page describes Aleph prompt-based localized changes to existing video and says Edit Studio is available on paid Runway plans. The cited page does not document an edit-history panel, assistant-turn Revert, or project-version restore control.
Do not infer recoverability from the fact that the editor can create multiple variations. A variation is not necessarily a restorable version, and generating several outputs does not prove that the timeline records each prompt as an undoable action. Before relying on Runway for a critical project, confirm the current product’s export, duplicate, and recovery behavior in the interface you use.
How to test beta AI editing safely
Premiere’s AI Assistant is described as a public beta. Adobe advises using a duplicate or a fresh project rather than client work that cannot be lost. Apply the same discipline to any AI editor whose recovery behavior is new, changing, or unclear.
- Duplicate the project before the first assistant request.
- Publish or save a named checkpoint before a batch of prompts.
- Test one reversible request at a time.
- Record which control removed the change and what remained afterward.
- Keep exported reference files for important cuts, captions, and audio mixes.
Common recovery mistakes and fixes
Mistake: treating every “undo” as the same
Fix: read the control’s scope. An Undo entry may represent one operation, while Revert may remove an entire assistant response and version restore may replace the project checkpoint.
Mistake: assuming session History is permanent
Fix: check persistence rules before closing the project. In Premiere, ordinary History entries are not available after close and reopen, while Team Projects published history is a separate collaborative record.
Mistake: restoring without preserving current work
Fix: make a duplicate, export, or new publication first. A broad restore can eliminate useful edits that are difficult to recreate.
Mistake: trusting a generated variation as a backup
Fix: verify that the product provides an actual project copy, saved version, or documented restore function. A rendered variation may not contain editable timeline state.

Quick Recap
Decision guide
- One bad trim or deletion: use action-level Undo or History.
- One prompt changed several things: use a documented assistant-turn Revert, after checking what else that response changed.
- The project was closed before you noticed the problem: use a saved copy or published version; do not expect Premiere’s ordinary History panel to contain the old entries.
- A collaborator’s publication is the known-good state: use Team Projects published history.
- A merge error occurred: use the product’s conflict-recovery choices and preserve both states when uncertain.
- No recovery control is documented: duplicate or export before experimenting, and do not assume the editor can reverse an AI operation.
Final verification checklist
- The unwanted AI change is absent from the timeline.
- Intended edits made later are still present.
- Clip timing, transitions, captions, and audio remain synchronized.
- The preview matches the expected cut from before the AI request.
- A new saved or published checkpoint exists.
- Collaborators know which version is now authoritative.
