Review an AI shopping agent’s proposed order as a draft, not as a receipt: verify the exact items and quantities, merchant, full total, delivery details, and payment method, then compare them with the permission you gave. Approve only through the service’s intended confirmation screen, and pause if anything changed or falls outside your instructions. The key distinction is whether you are approving this specific checkout or have already authorized the agent to buy within defined limits.
What should I check before an AI shopping agent places an order?
Check the complete order—not just the product names or the price shown in search results. A checkout can include taxes, shipping, fees, discounts, and a different fulfillment option, so the amount you authorize should be the final amount displayed at checkout.
- Items: Confirm each product’s name, model or variant, and quantity. Look closely for substitutions; an alternative is not automatically an acceptable match.
- Merchant: Make sure the seller is the one you intended. A product match does not establish that the merchant is acceptable to you.
- Total: Check the currency, item prices, taxes, shipping, fees, discounts, and final total.
- Delivery: Verify the destination address and selected shipping or fulfillment option, including its cost.
- Payment: Confirm that the displayed payment method is the one you intend to use, and read any authentication prompt before proceeding.
- Permission: Decide whether this exact merchant, order, amount, and delivery arrangement fit the scope of the authority you gave the agent.
The OpenAI Agentic Checkout Spec describes checkout state that includes line items and computed costs as well as fulfillment details, discounts, and totals. That is a useful model for what a review screen should make available; it is not proof that every shopping agent displays all of those details.
Think of the review as checking whether the order is both correct and authorized. Correctness is about whether the cart matches what you asked for. Authorization is about whether you agreed to let the agent place this particular order, or gave it constraints that cover the purchase. A cart can match your request but still exceed a spending limit or use a merchant you did not approve. Conversely, an order can fall within an amount limit but contain a model or quantity you did not intend.

Do not treat the first price you saw while searching as a commitment. The checkout specification describes a cart state with computed costs that can be updated as items, shipping, or discounts change. The merchant returns the full cart state, so the final displayed amount and order details—not an earlier estimate—are the relevant details to inspect before approval.
How do I review the order step by step?
Work through the proposed checkout before pressing its final purchase or approval control. If the screen does not show enough detail to verify the order, do not guess—look for a way to inspect or edit the cart, or stop and return to the merchant’s checkout.
- Read every order line. Check product, model or variant, quantity, and merchant. If the agent substituted an item, decide whether it still meets your request; if you are unsure, remove it or stop for clarification.
- Inspect the full price breakdown. Review each item price, currency, tax, delivery charge, discount, and fee, then check the final total. The search-page price is not necessarily the checkout price. The checkout spec describes a cart state that can be updated as items, shipping, or discounts change.
- Verify destination and fulfillment. Confirm the shipping address and the selected delivery option. Check both the option and its cost; a different speed or method can change what you are agreeing to pay.
- Compare the order with your instructions. Ask whether the exact items, merchant, amount, and delivery arrangement fit the authorization you granted. If a detail exceeds a limit or is unclear, do not treat silence or a default selection as approval.
- Use the intended approval screen. Check the payment method and any authentication prompt. Confirm only if the details match your intent and the control clearly represents the action you want to take.
- Check the outcome. After confirmation, look for an order confirmation and retain the order ID and merchant details so you can follow up if needed.
The OpenAI checkout specification says completion occurs after the customer clicks “Buy” with a selected payment method; merchant systems retain payment processing and return authoritative checkout and order state. This describes that protocol’s intended flow, not a universal guarantee about when every service charges or confirms an order.

For a line-by-line pass, compare what is on screen with the request you actually made. If you asked for one item, check that the quantity is one rather than simply scanning the item name. If a model, size, color, or other variant is shown, verify that specific variant rather than assuming the product title is enough. If the agent has chosen an alternative, treat that as a decision requiring your judgment: the fact that it appears in the cart does not establish that it satisfies your request.
Then check who is selling the product. The merchant is a separate part of the proposed purchase from the item itself, and the agent’s product match does not make the seller acceptable by default. Verify the merchant shown in the checkout rather than relying on the search result or an earlier recommendation. If you cannot identify the merchant in the approval screen, pause until you can.
For the total, read the breakdown and the final figure together. Confirm the currency as well as the amount; an amount without its currency is not enough to establish what you are agreeing to pay. Check the listed discounts and fees rather than assuming that a promotional price shown earlier has carried through. A changed shipping selection or discount can affect the cart state, so the relevant question is whether the final total still fits your instructions and any limit you set.
Finally, inspect the delivery destination and option as a pair. An address can be correct while the selected fulfillment method is not what you wanted, and the method can carry a different cost. If the checkout presents several fulfillment options, confirm which one is selected and the associated cost before authorizing the purchase.

The AP2 specification distinguishes those human-present and human-absent flows. Its overview describes a trusted surface for informed consent and signed checkout or payment mandates. These are protocol design concepts, not evidence that a particular shopping agent implements AP2 or that all services offer the same approval controls.
Human-present approval
In a human-present flow, inspect the specific, closed checkout and approve it yourself. Your decision should cover the order actually shown, rather than relying only on the agent’s earlier summary or recommendation.
This makes the last screen important: it should be the point at which you can judge the actual cart, not merely accept a broad description of what the agent plans to do. Look for the line items, full total, fulfillment details, and payment method that will apply to the checkout. If any of these details have changed since the agent summarized the order, make your decision using the current checkout rather than the earlier description.
Autonomous purchasing under constraints
In a human-absent flow, an earlier authorization sets the boundaries within which the agent may act. Before enabling that kind of purchasing, understand what the constraints cover—such as the permitted purchase, amount, or circumstances—and how the service handles a change that would take the order outside them. The AP2 specification also allows a merchant to require renewed user confirmation when fulfillment is uncertain.
Do not assume that a general instruction such as “buy this for me” answers every question about authority. Check what the service says the authorization covers and whether the final merchant, item, amount, and delivery arrangement fit it. If a purchase is outside a stated limit, involves a substitution, or depends on uncertain fulfillment, the safe response is to stop and seek a new confirmation rather than interpret the earlier instruction broadly.
For either model, use the service’s trusted approval surface and read the final action carefully. AP2 describes role validation in deterministic code; that is protocol design guidance, not a consumer-facing assurance that every implementation prevents mistakes.
Keep the distinction between a protocol and a product in mind. AP2 shows how consent and authority can be represented in a protocol; it does not establish that a service you use follows that design. Check the actual service’s controls and wording. A clear, explicit approval action is more useful to you when you can see what it authorizes and which payment method it will use.
What should I do if the price or availability changes?
Do not assume that one agent’s price-change protection applies to another. Check the service’s stated rule for the particular checkout, and stop to review again if the order changes or the displayed total no longer matches what you intended.

Google Pay’s Agentic checkout help page says its feature proceeds only when the final price is the same as or lower than the total the user confirmed. If the price rises above that amount, the purchase does not go through and the user is not charged. The page also identifies a stock-out or significant price change as reasons an attempt can fail. This is a Google-specific policy, not a general promise made by AI shopping agents.
When a checkout cannot complete, read the service’s message rather than repeatedly approving a revised order. If a new item, amount, or delivery choice is proposed, review it as a new decision against your instructions.
Separate a changed price from a changed order. A service may have a stated rule about a higher total, but that does not answer whether you are comfortable with a different item, quantity, merchant, address, or delivery option. Check all of the affected details again. If the service says an attempt failed because an item is out of stock or because the price changed significantly, do not infer that it will automatically substitute an acceptable alternative; the sources do not establish a universal substitution rule.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Google’s price ceiling is useful as an example of a service-specific safeguard: the final price must be the same as or lower than the amount confirmed for that Google Pay checkout. It is not a reason to skip your review, nor should it be applied to other services. Before using a different agent, find out whether a changed amount leads to a failed attempt, a new approval request, or another process. If the service does not explain what happens, do not assume that a price increase will be blocked.
How can I compare shopping agents’ checkout safeguards?
Compare what the agent lets you inspect and control before a purchase, not just how well it finds products. The official sources establish useful dimensions for comparison, but do not provide a complete feature matrix across providers.
| What to compare | What to establish before using the service |
|---|---|
| Approval model | Do you approve each closed checkout, or can the agent buy under constraints you set earlier? AP2 describes both patterns; a service’s implementation is not established by the protocol alone. |
| Order details shown | Can you inspect line items, total, address, delivery option, and payment details before approval? The OpenAI checkout spec includes these categories in checkout state, but that does not establish what another service displays. |
| Changed price or stock | Does a changed total or unavailable item stop the order, trigger a new approval, or follow another stated rule? Google Pay documents a price ceiling for its own Agentic checkout; do not generalize it. |
| Approval and authentication | Which screen is the trusted approval surface, what does its confirmation control authorize, and what authentication may be requested? AP2 describes informed consent and signed mandates as protocol concepts. |
| After-purchase support | Where do you find the confirmation, and who handles cancellation, returns, wrong items, or delivery problems? Google Pay’s help directs customers to the merchant for these issues. |
| Availability | Check geography, language, eligible merchants, and payment method at the time you plan to use the service. Feature availability can be limited and may change. |
For example, Google’s help page describes Agentic checkout as limited to the US and Australia, in English, and at select merchants accepting Google Pay. Treat those as the page’s stated availability, not a permanent or universal description; check the current terms in the service when you use it.
Use the comparison questions to distinguish what is explicitly available from what is merely implied. A protocol may define rich cart information or signed mandates, but that does not tell you whether a particular provider shows the details in a way you can review. Likewise, a support page describing a price ceiling for one checkout product is not evidence that a competitor has the same rule. Look for the service’s own explanation of its approval path, its treatment of changes, and where you can find help after the order.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAvailability is practical, not just technical. Google Pay’s page lists geography, language, participating merchants, and Google Pay acceptance as limits for its feature. Because those details can change, confirm them at the time of use rather than relying on a past description. Do not assume that a service available in one country, language, or merchant context will have the same coverage elsewhere.

What should I save after the order is placed?
Keep the merchant’s order confirmation and support details, along with the order ID. If the purchase is wrong, you need to cancel or return it, or delivery is delayed or missing, Google Pay’s help page directs customers to contact the merchant. Follow the merchant’s process and use the confirmation to identify the transaction.
The confirmation also lets you distinguish an agent’s proposed cart from an order the merchant has actually recorded. The OpenAI Agentic Checkout Spec describes merchant systems as retaining payment processing and returning authoritative checkout and order state. In practice, use the confirmation and order information the service or merchant provides rather than treating the agent’s summary as proof that the purchase is complete.
If something is wrong, identify the issue and use the merchant support route shown with the order. Google Pay’s instructions specifically direct customers to the merchant for a wrong item, cancellation, return, delayed delivery, or an order that has not arrived. Retaining the order ID and confirmation gives you the information needed to follow that process. The sources do not establish a single support or dispute procedure for every agent and merchant, so check the instructions for the actual purchase.

Checkout protocols explain how an order state and authorization can be represented; support pages describe the behavior of a specific service; government consumer guidance addresses broader concerns. None of these should be read as proof that every agent uses the same safeguards or has the same legal status.
UK government consumer research on agentic AI and consumers says consumer-facing agent authority remains limited and human escalation is common. It describes early shopping agents as able to search, compare, and initiate simple actions with confirmation. This is UK research, not a measurement of every product or market.
The UK Competition and Markets Authority’s guidance on using AI agents and complying with consumer law says businesses remain responsible if an AI agent they use does something illegal. That statement concerns businesses using agents under UK consumer-law guidance; it should not be generalized into a claim about every consumer’s rights or every jurisdiction.
The cited official protocol, service-help, and government materials do not provide a directly relevant published statistic for AI shopping-agent checkout error rates or consumer outcomes. It would be misleading to use an unrelated adoption figure as a substitute. They also do not provide a complete side-by-side feature matrix for all providers, so compare the actual controls and terms in the service you plan to use.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a published error rate for AI shopping-agent checkouts?
The official protocol, help, and government sources cited here do not provide a directly relevant error-rate or consumer-outcomes statistic. That means there is no figure in these sources that can reliably quantify how often agent checkouts go wrong.

Does an AI agent become legally responsible for a purchase it makes?
Responsibility depends on the circumstances and applicable law. The UK Competition and Markets Authority says businesses remain responsible if an AI agent they use does something illegal; that business-facing UK guidance is not a universal statement about consumer liability or rights elsewhere.
Does an agent’s suggested cart mean the merchant has accepted the order?
Not necessarily. In the OpenAI Agentic Checkout Spec, checkout completion follows the customer’s “Buy” action, while merchant systems retain payment processing and return authoritative checkout and order state; the actual confirmation process depends on the service and merchant.
What if the final price is higher than the amount I approved?
Check the specific service’s rule and do not assume it matches Google Pay’s. Google Pay says its Agentic checkout will not proceed if the final price is higher than the confirmed total, and the user is not charged; that policy is specific to Google’s feature.
Recommended Free Tools
Can an agent place an order without asking me at checkout?
Some authorization models are human-present, with the user approving the closed checkout, while human-absent flows allow action under constraints previously approved by the user. Check the particular service’s permission model and the limits you authorized; AP2 describes both models but does not prove that a given service implements them.
Who should I contact about a wrong item, cancellation, return, or delivery problem?
Google Pay’s Agentic checkout help directs customers to the merchant for wrong-item purchases, cancellations, returns, and delayed or undelivered orders. Keep the order confirmation and ID, and follow the merchant’s process.
Where is Google Pay Agentic checkout available?
Google’s help page describes availability as limited to the US and Australia, in English, and at select merchants accepting Google Pay. Check the current service information because availability can change.
The Bottom Line
Before approving, verify the actual cart—not just the agent’s summary—and make sure the items, merchant, final total, delivery, and payment method fit the authority you gave. If the screen omits details, the order changes, or your permission does not clearly cover it, pause. Keep the merchant’s confirmation and order ID after checkout.
