Review an AI-assisted audit workpaper as audit evidence, not as an AI-generated narrative. Before sign-off, establish the audit purpose, verify the source data, test how the tool produced its results, trace findings back to underlying evidence, investigate exceptions, and document the reviewer’s work and conclusion. A fluent summary or plausible anomaly list is not proof that the information is complete, accurate, or relevant to the audit.

What does a sound review of an AI-assisted workpaper establish?

A sound review establishes a defensible chain from the audit objective to the evidence and final conclusion. The reviewer should be able to explain what was tested, why the AI tool was used, what information it received, how that information was processed, what the tool returned, and how the team evaluated the result.

AI may help summarize documents, classify transactions, identify anomalies, or apply rules to a population. Those uses do not transfer responsibility for audit evidence or judgment to the tool. The auditor still needs sufficient appropriate evidence, professional scepticism, and a conclusion supported by work that another auditor can understand.

PCAOB AS 1215 describes audit documentation as “the written record of the basis for the auditor’s conclusions.” It calls for enough detail to make the purpose, source, and conclusions understandable, including significant findings and issues, who prepared and reviewed the work, and the relevant dates. PCAOB AS 1105 requires auditors to evaluate the accuracy and completeness of information produced by the company and whether it is precise and detailed enough for the audit. Those requirements make source-data testing and clear documentation essential, not optional enhancements to an AI summary.

The applicable requirements depend on the engagement and jurisdiction. PCAOB standards apply to audits within their scope; other engagements may follow different standards. IAASB’s 2020 material discusses automated tools, robotics, analytics, and AI in relation to ISA 230, but explicitly is non-authoritative. AUASB’s 2025 AI guidance offers review considerations, including data quality, assumptions, model logic, transparency, changes, output reasonableness, security, and documentation. Use the standards and firm methodology that actually govern the engagement.

What should the reviewer establish before testing the AI output?

First define the audit work the tool is meant to support. Without a stated assertion, risk, population, period, and procedure objective, a reviewer cannot judge whether the result answers the right question or is precise enough to support a conclusion.

Write down the objective and boundaries

  • Assertion or control objective: Identify the financial-statement assertion or control objective addressed by the procedure.
  • Risk and rationale: State the assessed risk and why AI assistance was used rather than, or alongside, another procedure.
  • Population and period: Define the records or documents included, the covered period, and any exclusions or filters.
  • Expected result: Describe what the procedure is designed to identify or evaluate. For example, specify the kinds of transactions or exceptions the rule or analysis is intended to flag.
  • Use in the audit: Explain whether the output is exploratory, directs further testing, or is part of the evidence supporting a conclusion. Do not imply that an exploratory result independently proves an assertion.

These boundaries help reveal a mismatch early: a tool may produce an answer that looks relevant while analyzing the wrong period, a partial population, or a question that does not address the assessed risk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Identify the tool and the actual run

Record the vendor and tool name, model or version when available, date used, relevant system settings, prompts or rules, and any human preprocessing. Preserve what was actually run, not a cleaned-up description written after the result was known. If the tool or its configuration changed during the procedure, distinguish the runs and record which output informed the workpaper.

For a generative tool, retain the prompt and relevant instructions, together with the returned content and any source references the tool displayed. For a rules-based or analytical tool, retain the rules, formulas, code, parameters, and assumptions that determined the result. When people transformed, filtered, labeled, or corrected data before or after tool use, document those steps and who performed them.

How do I test whether the input data is reliable?

Trace the data to authoritative records and test whether it is complete, accurate, relevant, and from the right period. A correct model applied to an incomplete or altered population can still produce a misleading result.

  1. Identify the source. Record where each input file or data set came from and what business record or system it represents. Tie it to authoritative records relevant to the engagement rather than relying solely on a file name or AI-generated description.
  2. Check completeness. Reconcile the input population to the relevant source, inspect filters and exclusions, and investigate missing records or unexplained gaps. Establish whether the tool received the entire population it was intended to analyze.
  3. Check accuracy and precision. Compare selected data fields and records with their underlying records. Evaluate whether the information is detailed and precise enough for the specific audit purpose; a summary-level dataset may not support a conclusion that requires transaction-level detail.
  4. Check period and relevance. Confirm dates, cutoffs, entities, and other scope boundaries. Determine whether the data is current and relevant to the assertion or control objective.
  5. Inspect transformations. Trace how data was extracted, converted, joined, filtered, or otherwise changed. Check that transformations did not omit relevant items, duplicate records, or change the meaning of fields.
  6. Consider access and controls. Confirm the data was obtained and handled through appropriate permissions, and consider relevant IT or application controls when they affect the reliability of the information.

PCAOB AS 1105 specifically requires testing the accuracy and completeness of company-produced information and evaluating its precision and detail. The workpaper should show what the team tested and what the results mean for this procedure. A statement such as “data validated” is less useful than a documented tie-out, sample checks, or explanation of identified differences and their resolution.

How do I test whether an AI summary or anomaly result is accurate?

Reperform or independently test a representative portion of the procedure, then challenge the output for errors, omissions, bias, and reasonableness. The amount and nature of testing should fit the procedure’s purpose, risks, and intended reliance; a plausible-looking answer is not a substitute for test checks.

Reperform selected items

Choose a sample of outputs and trace each result back to the underlying evidence. Independently recalculate a flagged amount, verify a classification against the source document, or rerun a rule on selected records. Where feasible, repeat the analysis on a sample or rerun the same procedure to see whether the result can be reproduced.

Test both positive and negative cases when the procedure permits: items the tool flagged and items it did not flag. This helps the reviewer evaluate not only whether a reported exception is real, but also whether relevant exceptions may have been missed. Include edge cases and conditions unlike the examples used to develop the prompt or rule. A test confined to familiar examples can fail to expose the limits of the procedure.

Challenge the content and reasoning

  • Unsupported statements: Compare factual claims and cited details with source evidence. Watch for invented facts, figures, or references.
  • Omitted qualifiers: Check whether a summary dropped a condition, exception, date, or limitation that changes the meaning of its source.
  • Classification errors: Verify that items placed into categories meet the documented criteria, including borderline cases.
  • Bias and skew: Consider whether data composition, labels, examples, or assumptions could systematically shape what is surfaced or overlooked.
  • Contradictory evidence: Compare the output with other audit evidence. Investigate meaningful inconsistencies rather than treating the tool’s result as the default answer.
  • Reasonableness: Ask whether the pattern of results makes sense given the procedure, population, and evidence. An unexpected result may require more work even if the tool explains it confidently.

Automation bias can make a polished or confident output seem more dependable than it is. AUASB’s 2025 guidance says, “AI tools are not a substitute for human judgement.” The reviewer must make and document an independent assessment rather than accept a conclusion because the system produced it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I prove that an AI conclusion is traceable to source evidence?

Preserve a usable audit trail that connects each significant output and conclusion to the underlying record, the processing that affected it, and the reviewer’s evaluation. Traceability is not achieved merely by saving the final narrative or an export of flagged results.

For a significant finding, a reviewer should be able to follow this chain:

  1. Source: Locate the original record, document, or authoritative data supporting the item.
  2. Input and transformation: Identify how that source entered the analysis and any extraction, filtering, normalization, or human edits applied to it.
  3. Method: Inspect the prompt, rule, formula, code, parameters, assumptions, or model logic that shaped the result, to the extent available.
  4. Output: Locate the relevant tool response, flag, calculation, retrieved passage, or log entry.
  5. Audit evaluation: See the independent check, contradictory evidence, exception resolution, and reasoning that connects the evidence to the conclusion.

Retain source references, retrieved passages, formulas or code, parameters, assumptions, output logs, and change history when they are relevant to reproducing or understanding the work. Use stable identifiers or cross-references that let another reviewer locate evidence without guessing. Keep enough context to distinguish the result that was reviewed from a later rerun or revised version.

Explainability has limits. If proprietary or changing logic cannot be explained or tested enough to support the planned reliance, do not treat an opaque output as self-validating evidence. Consider alternative procedures that provide evidence the team can evaluate. If appropriate evidence cannot be obtained, assess the consequence under the applicable auditing standards, including whether a scope limitation may result.

What is the difference between a narrative-only review and an evidence-led review?

A narrative-only review checks whether the AI-produced account sounds coherent; an evidence-led review evaluates whether the procedure and evidence support the audit conclusion. The following comparison is a practical way to spot the difference, not a substitute for the standards governing the engagement.

Review area Narrative-only approach Evidence-led approach
Source-data testing Accepts the presented data description. Ties inputs to authoritative records and tests completeness, accuracy, period, precision, and relevant transformations.
Reproducibility Saves the final answer but not enough to repeat the procedure. Preserves the relevant tool, version or configuration, prompts or rules, settings, inputs, and output records so the work can be understood or tested.
Audit-trail completeness Leaves a finding without a clear path back to its source. Links significant findings through source, processing, tool result, audit testing, and conclusion.
Logic and assumptions Assumes the system’s reasoning is reliable because the result is fluent. Inspects available logic and assumptions and evaluates whether they are understandable and appropriate for the procedure.
Output accuracy Accepts a summary or anomaly list without independent checks. Reperforms or independently tests selected results, including edge cases and potential omissions.
Exception handling Mentions exceptions without showing their effect on the conclusion. Documents contradictory evidence, follow-up procedures, consultations, resolution, and impact on the conclusion.
Reviewer effort Can appear quicker initially, but may leave the reviewer unable to assess whether reliance is justified. Requires targeted testing and documentation so the reviewer can evaluate the evidence and the conclusion.
Security and privacy Does not establish how client information was handled. Checks firm policy, applicable privacy requirements, and whether data went outside approved boundaries.
Change control Does not distinguish settings or output changes between runs. Records relevant changes to data, assumptions, configuration, or logic and identifies which run supports the work.
Standards alignment Relies on a convincing narrative as if it met documentation and evidence requirements. Connects the documented purpose, source, procedures, evidence, conclusions, preparer, reviewer, and dates to the applicable requirements.

How should the reviewer resolve exceptions and document sign-off?

Document what contradicted the tool’s output, what additional work was performed, how the issue was resolved, and whether any unresolved matter affects the conclusion or opinion. A list of flags without resolution does not explain how the audit team used the analysis.

Resolve exceptions before relying on the conclusion

  • Investigate contradictory evidence and determine whether it reflects an input error, transformation issue, tool limitation, or a genuine finding.
  • Perform additional procedures when the existing evidence does not resolve the issue.
  • Document consultations and any revised analysis or conclusion, with a clear link to the supporting evidence.
  • For an unresolved exception, explain why it does or does not affect the conclusion and evaluate its implications under the applicable standards.

Complete a review record another auditor can follow

In the workpaper, record the purpose, source, procedures performed, evidence obtained, conclusions reached, and significant issues. Identify the preparer and reviewer and their dates, capture review notes and their disposition, and cross-reference supporting evidence. PCAOB AS 1215 emphasizes that documentation should make the work’s purpose, source, and conclusions clear; a sign-off without a comprehensible record does not make the basis of the conclusion clear.

What security and privacy checks belong in the review?

Confirm that client information was handled under firm policy and applicable privacy requirements, and determine whether an external tool transmitted data outside approved boundaries. The security check is part of evaluating the procedure, especially where confidential records were provided to a service outside the organization’s controlled environment.

  • Identify whether the tool was approved for the data and the engagement.
  • Determine what client information was submitted and whether it was transmitted to an external service.
  • Check applicable firm restrictions and privacy requirements before relying on the workflow.
  • Document how a security or privacy exception was addressed and whether it affects the use of the tool or the audit record.

Do not assume that a tool’s ability to analyze a file establishes permission to upload it. The reviewer should be able to explain how the team kept information within approved boundaries.

What should an audit manager check before signing off?

Before sign-off, an audit manager should be able to answer the questions below from the workpaper and its cross-references, rather than from an informal explanation of what the AI was intended to do.

  • Is the assertion or control objective, risk, population, period, and reason for AI use explicit?
  • Are the tool, version or configuration where available, date, prompts or rules, settings, and human preprocessing identified?
  • Is the input tied to authoritative records, with completeness, accuracy, relevance, period, precision, transformations, and relevant controls addressed?
  • Were representative outputs independently tested, including exceptions and conditions beyond familiar examples?
  • Can significant findings be traced through source evidence, processing, tool logic or assumptions, output, and audit conclusion?
  • Were omissions, bias, hallucinated details, and inconsistency with other evidence considered?
  • Are contradictory findings resolved, or are their consequences clearly evaluated?
  • Were confidentiality, privacy, and external data transmission considered under applicable policy?
  • Does the workpaper identify the preparer, reviewer, dates, review notes, final conclusion, and supporting cross-references?

If a key answer is no, the manager should determine what further evidence, procedure, documentation, or escalation is needed before relying on the result. A tool’s confidence or technical sophistication does not cure an untested source, an unexplained transformation, or an unresolvable gap in evidence.

Is there a general accuracy rate for AI-assisted audit workpapers?

No universal published accuracy rate is established by the authoritative sources cited here. PCAOB and IAASB materials address evidence and documentation requirements, while AUASB guidance provides considerations for evaluating AI use; they do not provide a single success percentage that can replace testing in a particular engagement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an AI-generated summary be included in an audit file?

It can be retained as part of the record when it is relevant, but the summary should not obscure the underlying evidence or the auditor’s evaluation. Preserve enough source references and context for a reviewer to distinguish the tool’s text from the team’s verified findings.

What if an AI tool will not disclose how its model works?

The team can assess what is available, such as inputs, settings, outputs, and reproducibility, but should not claim to have validated undisclosed logic. If the remaining opacity prevents sufficient appropriate evidence for the intended use, use alternative procedures or evaluate the resulting evidence limitation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does using AI change who is responsible for the audit conclusion?

No. The audit team remains responsible for evaluating the evidence and exercising professional judgment. A tool may assist with analysis, but it cannot accept responsibility for the engagement’s conclusion.

How often should an AI procedure be retested after a tool update?

The sources cited do not set a universal retesting interval. When a model, configuration, prompt, rule, or input process changes, document the change and evaluate whether the prior testing still supports the current procedure and output.
