A beige Power Mac G3 can reveal a JPEG hidden in its ROM: enable a RAM disk, erase it with the exact name secret ROM image, and the Mac writes out a file named The Team. The image was embedded in the computer’s ROM; the RAM-disk name is the trigger that makes it appear.
What the Power Mac G3 Easter egg does
The result is a JPEG stored in the ROM used by beige Power Mac G3 desktop, minitower, and all-in-one models. It is not a picture fetched from the internet or a normal Finder feature. When the right RAM-disk volume name is detected, the system creates a JPEG file called The Team.
Doug Brown’s technical account, published June 24, 2025, traces the trigger to code in the PowerPC-native SCSI Manager 4.3 resource. He found the JPEG in ROM resource type HPOE, alongside the strings .Edisk, secret ROM image, and The Team. Disassembly showed code checking for the RAM-disk driver and comparing the disk’s volume name; on a match, it loads the embedded JPEG and writes the file. Brown explains the ROM and code path.
How to reveal the image on a compatible G3
You need a beige Power Mac G3 from the desktop, minitower, or all-in-one family and a compatible classic Mac OS installation. Brown reports testing the steps on a physical desktop G3. Follow the sequence carefully: the special text is the RAM disk’s volume name, not a filename you type into Finder.

- Restart using Special > Restart so the RAM disk is mounted.
- Select the RAM Disk icon on the desktop.

Earlier PowerPC Mac Easter eggs reportedly used selecting and dragging text to the desktop, but Brown says that approach does not reveal this G3 image. Here, the documented trigger is erasing and naming the RAM disk.
Which models and Mac OS versions are reported to work?
Brown identifies beige desktop, minitower, and all-in-one Power Mac G3 models from 1997 through 1999 as using the ROM. His report says the trick appears to work through Mac OS 9.0.4; Mac OS 9.1 may be the first release where it stopped working. These are Brown’s reported findings, not a complete compatibility matrix for every configuration.

If you do not have original hardware, Brown links to an Infinite Mac emulation configured as a beige G3 with Mac OS 8.1. That is an emulator for exploration, not Apple-supported hardware behavior, and Brown notes a startup-alias quirk in that setup.

The JPEG itself had been discussed before Brown’s 2025 write-up, including in a 2014 post by Pierre Dandumont. Brown’s account says he had not found the activation method documented; an IRC participant known as ^alex worked out the RAM-disk naming trigger, which Brown then tried on physical hardware. Brown describes inspecting the ROM with Hex Fiend and a Mac ROM template, then using Ghidra to disassemble the relevant code. “The last Mac Easter egg” is an evocative label, not a proven chronological claim about every Mac release. Brown characterizes it as probably one of the last Mac Easter eggs before Steve Jobs reportedly banned them; that does not establish that every later Mac lacked hidden features, or that Jobs knew about this particular image. The evidence supports calling it a late, previously undocumented classic Mac Easter egg.
