To retrain for work less exposed to automation, compare occupations by their actual tasks, local hiring demand, pay, entry requirements, and training time and cost—not by an “automation-proof” label. An exposure score measures how current technology could affect tasks; it does not predict that a job will disappear. Pick a few plausible destinations, check current local openings and employer requirements, then pay for training only when it closes a specific, verified skills gap.

What does “less exposed to automation” actually mean?

It means looking for work whose tasks may be less susceptible to current technologies, or where technology is more likely to change how the work is done than eliminate the need for workers. It does not mean finding a job guaranteed to remain unchanged. Occupations contain varied tasks, and people in the same occupation may do different work depending on their employer, industry, and level of responsibility.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) describes its AI exposure categories as a way to rank how much AI could assist with or complete occupational tasks. It explicitly cautions: “The AI exposure category is not a forecast of employment growth or decline.” An occupation can therefore have exposed tasks and still grow, or have relatively little exposure and weak hiring prospects. BLS projections also account for multiple influences; they do not isolate the effect of one technology.

The International Labour Organization (ILO) makes a similar distinction. Its 2026 brief says, “Exposure indicators reveal technological susceptibility, not labour market outcomes.” Methods differ, task descriptions can be static, and indicators do not fully account for adoption constraints or economic feasibility. Treat exposure as an early signal to investigate, not a job-loss forecast or a reskilling prescription.

In its 2025 global study, the ILO estimated that one in four workers worldwide were in occupations with some generative AI exposure, while 3.3% of global employment was in its highest exposure category. Those figures describe exposure under that study’s method; they are not counts of workers certain to lose their jobs. The ILO’s summary says “most jobs will be transformed rather than made redundant.”

How do I compare occupations before choosing one?

Use exposure as one factor in a decision that also considers whether jobs are available where you live, whether the likely pay meets your needs, and how much time and money you can invest in qualifying. For U.S. readers, the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook and its 2025–35 occupational projection tables are a starting point. They offer measures such as projected employment change, annual openings, median wage, typical entry education, related experience, and on-the-job training.

Compare What to check How to use it
Demand Projected employment change and annual openings Growth percentage is not the entire hiring picture. Openings can include replacement needs as well as new jobs created through growth.
Pay Median annual wage Use it as a national reference point, then check local pay and whether the likely earnings fit your budget and income needs.
Entry route Typical education, related experience, and on-the-job training These describe common requirements, not necessarily the only way into the occupation. Verify requirements with employers and training providers in your area.
Task mix Tasks that may be assisted or completed by technology, and tasks involving judgment, physical work, interaction, responsibility, or context Assess the work itself rather than treating an occupational label or exposure category as a complete description of the job.
Transferable skills Overlap between your existing abilities and the target role’s requirements Identify the gap that remains. Broad skills evidence can inform this comparison, but it is not a personal skills assessment.
Local fit Current vacancies, employer requirements, and available training National projections cannot tell you which employers near you are hiring or whether a particular local program is respected.

For a practical comparison, shortlist two or three occupations rather than trying to rank every possible career. Include at least one option that uses skills you already have; a change of industry or job title may require less retraining than starting over. For each option, record the same measures in a spreadsheet or notes document, and mark which facts are national estimates and which you have verified locally.

What do the current U.S. projection examples show?

BLS reported the following selected U.S. employment-growth projections for 2024–34 in 2026:

Occupation Projected employment growth, 2024–34
Data scientists 33.5%
Information security analysts 28.5%
Actuaries 21.8%
Operations research analysts 21.5%
Computer and information research scientists 19.7%
Software developers 15.8%

These are examples of projected growth in selected IT- and AI-related occupations, not a list ranked by low automation exposure. They also do not establish that an occupation is a good match for a particular person. A field can be growing while technology changes some of its tasks, so check the day-to-day work and entry requirements as well as the projection.

For a different signal, BLS’s 2025–35 release projects U.S. employment in office and administrative support to decline 4.0%, or 752,100 jobs, and employment in sales and related occupations to decline 1.4%. These are projections for broad occupational groups, not proof that every role in either group will be automated. They are U.S.-specific and should not be treated as forecasts for other countries.

How do I identify work that fits my skills and constraints?

Start with the work you can already do, the work you want to do, and the practical limits on a transition. This prevents a career decision from becoming a search for a supposedly safe occupation that may be inaccessible, poorly paid locally, or a poor fit for your circumstances.

1. Inventory your current work, not just your job title

Write down the tasks you perform in a typical week and the skills behind them. Include tools or systems you use, decisions you make, problems you solve, people you support, and responsibilities you carry. Note which parts of the work rely on physical activity, human interaction, judgment, or detailed knowledge of a particular setting. This inventory gives you something more useful to compare with a future role than a job title alone.

2. Set your transition constraints

Be specific about the income you need, how much time you can devote to study, whether you can attend in person, and whether you can accept a temporary change in hours or earnings. List prior education, work experience, and any location or schedule limits that could affect your options. These are personal decision factors, not values that an occupational projection can settle for you.

3. Build a shortlist from real vacancies

Look at current job postings in the places where you could realistically work. Save postings for roles that interest you and note repeated requirements: skills, credentials, experience, software or equipment, and schedule. Separate “required” from “preferred” qualifications where the posting does so. If a requirement appears repeatedly across employers, investigate it; do not assume a single advertisement defines the whole occupation.

4. Compare the shortlist consistently

For each occupation, compare the BLS or relevant national statistics with local postings. Record projected change, annual openings where available, median wage, typical education and experience, the training you would need, and the tasks you would actually perform. Then identify the strongest overlap with your current skills and the most important gap. A promising projection is not enough if local openings are scarce or the route to entry conflicts with your constraints.

What skills are useful when technology changes job tasks?

Build portable foundations, then specialize for the role you choose. Evidence from the OECD and ILO supports broad capabilities such as literacy, numeracy, digital and ICT skills, critical thinking, collaboration, adaptability, and AI literacy; it does not prescribe one credential for every worker.

The OECD’s 2024 study of vacancies across 10 countries found management, business-process, and social skills among commonly demanded skills in highly AI-exposed occupations in its vacancy sample. It also found that most workers exposed to AI are unlikely to need specialized AI skills. That is a useful corrective to the idea that retraining always means becoming an AI engineer or learning machine learning. The skill mix depends on the chosen job and the employer’s actual requirements.

  • Digital and AI literacy: Understand the tools relevant to your work, what they can and cannot do, and when a human needs to check their output.
  • Reasoning and problem-solving: Practice evaluating information, diagnosing issues, and making decisions appropriate to the role.
  • Communication and collaboration: Develop the skills needed to explain work, coordinate with colleagues, and interact with customers or other stakeholders when the job calls for it.
  • Adaptability: Be prepared to learn updated processes and tools as tasks change, rather than assuming one course will cover every future change.
  • Role-specific capability: Add technical, practical, regulatory, or domain skills only after you have identified what the destination job requires.

These are broad foundations, not a guarantee of employment or a substitute for occupation-specific qualifications. Choose them because they address a real gap in your shortlist, not because a general skills list says every worker needs the same training.

How do I choose a training route without wasting time or money?

Choose the shortest credible route that closes a verified gap between your current skills and the requirements of jobs you could pursue. A course or credential is worth considering when employers recognize it or when it helps you demonstrate a capability those employers request. The available evidence does not establish which program is best for you, what it costs, whether financial aid is available, or what local employers require.

Verify the requirement before enrolling

Check whether the credential or skill appears in multiple current job postings, and ask employers or people doing the work how they evaluate candidates. Contact training providers to confirm the curriculum, schedule, prerequisites, total cost, and what evidence of skill you will have at the end. A program’s marketing claims do not establish that a credential is required or valued by local employers.

Compare the full commitment

Look beyond tuition. Account for fees, materials, travel or equipment if applicable, time away from paid work, and the time needed to complete prerequisites. Compare these costs and commitments with the specific skills or qualification the program provides. The available sources do not supply current program prices or a universal return-on-investment calculation, so obtain those details directly from providers and assess them against your circumstances.

Prefer evidence of capability, not just course completion

Find out what a prospective student can show an employer after training: a recognized qualification, a practical demonstration, supervised experience, or another work-relevant result. The right evidence varies by occupation. Do not assume that a course completion certificate by itself will meet an employer’s experience or licensing requirements; verify those with employers and relevant local authorities where applicable.

  1. Inventory your skills and constraints. List current tasks and transferable abilities, your income needs, available study time, and practical limits on location or schedule.
  2. Select two or three plausible occupations. Use current local vacancies alongside published projections. Favor roles with a credible match to your interests and existing abilities, not just a high growth figure.
  3. Compare the evidence side by side. Record demand, openings, wages, entry education, related experience, task mix, and the time and cost of your likely training route. Keep national estimates distinct from local facts.
  4. Inspect job postings and ask people who know the work. Confirm which skills and credentials are actually required, what tasks make up the job, and whether the postings reflect realistic entry-level opportunities.
  5. Choose training for a defined gap. Select the shortest credible option that supplies skills or qualifications supported by employer requirements. Compare providers before committing.
  6. Recheck before you pay and before you finish. Verify that local demand and requirements remain relevant. Employment projections, hiring practices, and technology use can change over time.

Keep a record of what you have verified and what remains uncertain. For example, you may know the national projection and a provider’s fee but still need to confirm whether nearby employers accept its credential. That open question is a reason to make a targeted inquiry, not to treat an attractive statistic as a complete career plan.

What mistakes should I avoid when retraining?

Most costly mistakes come from treating one indicator as a decision. Avoid these shortcuts:

  • Calling any job “automation-proof.” Exposure measures are not guarantees, and technologies and work practices change.
  • Choosing by growth percentage alone. Compare openings, pay, entry requirements, local vacancies, and job tasks too.
  • Assuming a whole occupation will vanish because some tasks are exposed. A technology may change a task without removing the job, and the effect can differ by employer and setting.
  • Enrolling before confirming a credential matters. First establish that the training addresses a requirement employers actually use.
  • Training for a trend rather than a role. A general AI course may not close the specific gap between your skills and a target job’s requirements.
  • Confusing national data with your local prospects. Projections cannot establish that local employers are hiring or that local pay matches the national median.

How should I use this guidance outside the United States?

The occupational projections and tools discussed here are U.S.-specific. If you live elsewhere, use your country’s official labor-market statistics and local vacancy information for demand, wages, and entry requirements. The ILO’s exposure estimates are global but describe exposure under its methodology, while the OECD vacancy findings cover 10 OECD countries; neither establishes local hiring conditions or the best training route for an individual reader.

Whatever country you are in, ask local employers and providers whether a qualification is recognized and whether the skills match the work being advertised. Do not transfer a U.S. wage, projection, or education requirement to another labor market without checking it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will AI take my job if my occupation has a high exposure score?

Not necessarily. A score concerns the potential for technology to affect tasks, while outcomes also depend on how employers adopt it and how work is organized. The score alone cannot tell you what will happen to your particular role.

Do I need to learn coding or machine learning to stay employable?

Not by default. The OECD’s 2024 vacancy study found that most workers exposed to AI are unlikely to need specialized AI skills; whether coding or machine learning is relevant depends on the occupation and employer.

How often should I revisit a career plan based on automation?

Review it when a meaningful change occurs in the roles you are targeting, such as a shift in employer requirements or local vacancies, and before making a major training commitment. No fixed review interval is established by the cited sources.

Can I use an AI exposure score to decide whether a training course is worth the price?

No. An exposure measure does not assess a course’s price, quality, credential recognition, or fit with local hiring. Judge the program against verified job requirements and the capability it will help you demonstrate.
