To restore a replacement iPhone from an iCloud backup, start setup at the Hello screen, connect to Wi-Fi, choose From iCloud Backup (called Restore from iCloud Backup in some Apple instructions), sign in to the Apple Account that owns the backup, and select the backup by its date and size. Keep the iPhone connected to Wi-Fi and power while the progress bar runs. Setup can finish before the job is completely over: photos, music, and apps may continue downloading from iCloud afterward.
If the replacement iPhone has already been set up, erase it first. An iCloud-backup restore is offered during initial setup, not from the normal home-screen settings flow.
What should I prepare before restoring an iCloud backup?
A few checks prevent the most common interruptions. You do not need the old iPhone for this process, but you do need access to the Apple Account that contains the backup and a dependable Wi-Fi connection.

- Replacement iPhone: It should be at the Hello screen. If it is already configured, erase it before beginning the restore.
- Apple Account credentials: Use the account that created the backup. Purchases made with other Apple Accounts can require additional sign-ins later.
- Wi-Fi: The setup assistant uses Wi-Fi for the backup download and subsequent content restoration.
- Power: Have a compatible charging cable or USB power adapter ready. Apple recommends keeping the phone powered during the restore and while background downloads finish.
- Time for a staged process: The initial progress bar is not a universal time estimate. Backup size and network speed determine how long it takes.
Do not begin by guessing which backup is newest. The setup assistant displays each available backup’s date and size so you can identify the correct one.

How do I restore a replacement iPhone from iCloud?
Follow these steps when the old iPhone is unavailable or you specifically want to use an iCloud backup.
- Turn on the replacement iPhone. Continue until the Hello screen appears. Choose your language and region when prompted.
- Join Wi-Fi. Select a network and enter its password. Keep the phone within reliable range of the router for the rest of setup.
- Advance to the data-transfer screen. Continue through the setup prompts until you see Transfer Your Apps & Data or Apps & Data. Apple uses both labels in its instructions.
- Choose the iCloud option. Tap From iCloud Backup or Restore from iCloud Backup.
- Sign in. Enter the Apple Account email address or phone number and password associated with the backup. Complete any verification prompts shown on screen.
- Review the backup list. Compare the displayed dates and sizes. Select the backup that matches the iPhone and point in time you need; do not simply select the first item.
- Install a required software update. If setup says the replacement iPhone needs a newer iOS version, follow the update instructions. After the update, return to the restore flow and select the backup again if prompted.
- Authenticate purchase accounts. The phone may ask for passwords for Apple Accounts used for App Store or iTunes purchases. You can skip a password and sign in later, but apps and purchased content tied to that account may not fully restore until authentication is completed.
- Leave the phone connected. Keep it on Wi-Fi and power until the progress indicator finishes. Avoid restarting the phone, changing networks, or disconnecting power while the bar is moving.
- Allow post-setup downloads to finish. After the home screen appears, leave the phone on Wi-Fi and power whenever possible. Photos, music, and apps can continue downloading from iCloud after setup.
The phone may become usable before every item has returned. That is normal for a staged restore; the home screen appearing does not prove that all cloud content has finished downloading.
What if the replacement iPhone is already set up?
You must erase the replacement iPhone before the iCloud-backup choice appears. Apple states that a device already set up must have all of its content erased to use the backup-restore steps.

- Tap General.
- Tap Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Choose Erase All Content and Settings.
- Follow the onscreen confirmation steps and let the iPhone restart to the Hello screen.
- Repeat the Wi-Fi, Apps & Data, and From iCloud Backup steps above.
Erasing removes the data currently stored on that replacement phone. Check for anything you need before confirming, because the erase is part of the restore process rather than a temporary switch to another setup mode.
How do I choose the right iCloud backup?
Use the backup’s displayed date and size as your primary evidence. A newer date is not automatically correct if it belongs to a different device, and the first item in the list is not guaranteed to be the one you want.
Match the date to the last known state
Think about when the old iPhone last had the information you need. If a recent change was made after the backup date, that change cannot be recovered from that older snapshot. Conversely, an older backup may be preferable if a later one contains a problem you are trying to avoid.

Use the size as a second check
A backup’s size helps distinguish devices or snapshots with different amounts of stored data. Treat it as a confirmation alongside the date, not as a measure of how long the restore will take. The download duration also depends on network speed and the amount of content that must be fetched after setup.

If no expected backup appears, verify that you signed in with the Apple Account that created it. Purchases and services associated with other Apple Accounts can create separate authentication requests, but they do not change which account owns the backup itself.
Why is my iPhone still downloading apps after the restore?
Because iCloud restoration is staged. The setup assistant first restores enough information for the iPhone to become usable, then continues retrieving apps and other cloud content. Apple specifically notes that photos, music, and apps can keep downloading after setup.
What you should do
- Keep the iPhone connected to the same reliable Wi-Fi network.
- Connect it to power, especially when the library or app collection is large.
- Leave it idle when practical so downloads can proceed without repeated interruptions.
- Allow extra time after the home screen appears before judging the restore incomplete.
What the home screen does and does not mean
The appearance of icons means the setup phase has completed, not that every app binary, photo, or music item is already local. Some icons may remain in a waiting or downloading state while iCloud finishes its work. If downloads stop entirely, first check Wi-Fi and power, then revisit any Apple Account password requests.
How long does an iCloud restore take?
Apple does not publish a universal restore-time estimate. Duration varies with the backup size and the speed and stability of the Wi-Fi connection. A small backup on a fast network can progress quickly, while a large backup followed by extensive photo, music, and app downloads can take substantially longer.

What should I do when setup asks for multiple Apple Account passwords?
Enter the passwords for the Apple Accounts used to obtain the apps or media you want restored. It is common for a household or an older device to contain purchases associated with more than one account.
Apple allows you to skip a password prompt and authenticate later. Skipping does not cancel the iCloud backup, but content tied to the unverified account may remain unavailable or incomplete until you sign in. If an app continues waiting after setup, look for a pending account-authentication request rather than assuming the backup is damaged.
What if the iPhone says a newer software version is required?
Follow the update path offered by setup. A backup created on a newer iOS release may require the replacement iPhone to update before it can be restored. Complete the software update, let the device restart, and continue through the restore assistant when it returns to the appropriate screen.
Do not select an unrelated backup simply to bypass the message. The date and size still matter after the update, so verify them again before confirming the restore.
What is the difference between iCloud Restore and Quick Start?
Both methods can set up a replacement iPhone, but they depend on different sources. iCloud Restore downloads a selected cloud backup during setup; Quick Start uses the old iPhone when it is nearby and can automatically transfer many settings, preferences, and iCloud Keychain data. Apple also supports direct device-to-device transfer in qualifying software versions.

How do I troubleshoot an iCloud restore that appears stuck?
Work from the least disruptive checks first. A slow restore is often a large download rather than a failed one, and Apple does not define a fixed completion time.
The progress bar has not moved
- Confirm that the Wi-Fi symbol is still present and that the network has not required a sign-in page.
- Reconnect the charging cable or USB power adapter and check that the phone is receiving power.
- Give the process additional time when the selected backup is large or the connection is slow.
- Avoid erasing or restarting solely because the elapsed time exceeds an expectation; there is no universal Apple time estimate.
Apps show waiting symbols after setup
- Leave the iPhone on Wi-Fi and power so background downloads can continue.
- Complete any Apple Account password prompts that were skipped.
- Check whether the waiting state affects all apps or only purchases associated with one account; the latter points to authentication rather than the backup selection.
The expected backup is missing
- Sign out of the assumption that the first account you tried is correct and verify the Apple Account that created the backup.
- Return to the backup list and inspect dates and sizes again.
- If the replacement was already configured, erase it and restart setup so the iCloud-backup choice is available.
Setup requires newer iOS
Install the update requested by the assistant, allow the restart, and resume setup. Once the restore screen returns, select the intended backup using its date and size.

The restore process is not a single instant copy. The setup assistant uses the selected backup to rebuild the phone, then iCloud can continue delivering cloud-stored photos, music, and apps. This is why a replacement can look familiar while still showing downloads in progress.
Use the completion of the progress bar as the end of the active restore stage, not as a promise that every cloud item is already stored locally. Keep the device powered and connected afterward when possible, especially if you need the full photo library or app collection available soon.
