You can usually restore an AI-edited video exactly when the project, an earlier project version, and the original media still exist. In Premiere Pro, use Revert to Original for Generative Extend, Clip > Restore Unrendered for a rendered replacement, or the History panel for earlier edits. Final Cut Pro keeps source media untouched, and DaVinci Resolve provides page-specific undo stacks while a project is open. If all you have is a finished export, exact recovery is no longer possible: you can split hard cuts and rebuild the edit, but the original crop values, grade settings, source links, and hidden AI state are not embedded in the rendered file.
What determines whether an AI edit can be restored exactly?
Restoration depends less on the AI feature than on what evidence remains. A project file preserves edit decisions and effect settings; linked camera media supplies the untouched pixels and sound; an open application session may still contain undo history. A finished export contains only rendered frames and audio, so it cannot reveal every original parameter.
| What you still have | Most reliable recovery | What may be missing |
|---|---|---|
| Open project with original media linked | Use the editor’s undo, history, disable, or revert command. | Actions performed before the available history or after a project was saved over. |
| Saved project version plus original media | Open the earlier version and copy or restore the affected sequence. | Changes made after that version was saved. |
| Project file but media is offline | Relink the exact source files, then revert the edit. | Any source media that was deleted, renamed without a recoverable path, or replaced. |
| Only a rendered export | Reconstruct cuts, then grade, crop, and mix manually. | Original timeline metadata, effect parameters, source links, and AI-generated state. |
Before touching the damaged sequence, make a duplicate project or save a new version. Never overwrite the only project file or replace the camera originals while troubleshooting.
How do I preserve a recovery point before trying a fix?
Create a safe copy first, because undo systems are not permanent archives. Premiere Pro’s History panel is session-based, and DaVinci Resolve purges its undo history when a project closes. A new project version gives you a way back if a second attempt makes the result worse.

- Duplicate the project. Use your editor’s Save As, duplicate-project, or versioning command and add a clear suffix such as
_before_restore. - Keep the original media in place. Do not overwrite camera files, transcodes, audio recordings, or still images. If media is on removable storage, make a verified copy before relinking.
- Record the current state. Note the sequence name, affected clip, time range, and whether the problem is audio, video, color, framing, or a rendered replacement.
- Close unrelated sequences only after saving. This reduces the chance of applying a history command to the wrong timeline.
- Test a short duplicate sequence. When practical, copy the affected section into a test sequence and confirm the restoration there before changing the master edit.
How do I restore AI-generated frames or extended material in Premiere Pro?
For Premiere Pro’s Generative Extend, select the AI-generated segment, right-click its AI-generated label, and choose Revert to Original. Adobe states: “At any point, if you want to replace the AI-generated frames with original media, right-click on the AI-generated label and select Revert to Original.” The command replaces generated frames with the original media that remains in the project; it does not regenerate or alter the camera file.
- Open the sequence containing the Generative Extend result.
- Select the clip or extended section that shows the AI-generated label.
- Right-click the label itself, not an unrelated track or empty timeline area.
- Choose Revert to Original.
- Play across the join and inspect both picture and sound. If the result is correct, save the project as a new version.
Generative Extend does not extend dialogue. Adobe documents that dialogue is muted during an extension, while room tone, sound effects, and background audio can be extended. If spoken words disappeared, restore the original dialogue clip rather than expecting the generated tail to recreate speech.
How can I restore only the original audio without changing the picture?
Audio and video can be restored independently when the original components still exist. Unlink the clip’s audio and video, then apply the revert or earlier-state command only to the affected component; leave the correct component untouched.
When the generated section affects dialogue
Replace the generated or muted dialogue with the original dialogue item from the same source clip. Check that the replacement starts at the intended edit point and that its duration matches the picture. Generative Extend’s documented behavior means an extended section may contain ambience but no recreated speech, so a clean dialogue restoration normally comes from the source media or an earlier project state.
When ambience or effects are the problem
Compare the original and edited waveforms around the transition. If only room tone, a sound effect, or background audio was extended incorrectly, revert that audio component while retaining the accepted video extension. Keep a separate project version before relinking or trimming so a timing change can be undone without disturbing the restored picture.
When audio and video are still linked
Temporarily unlink them, select the affected side, and use the appropriate revert or history command. Relink only after confirming that the restored audio and picture remain synchronized. If the original media is missing, unlinking cannot recreate it; it only lets you edit the remaining material separately.
How do I roll back an AI color grade or look?
Remove the grade at the point where it was applied instead of exporting another file and trying to correct that export. Use the editor’s reset, disable, or earlier-state control, then verify the result on a calibrated or consistently managed display.

Premiere Pro
If the look was added as an effect or adjustment, disable or remove that operation, or use the History panel to return to the state immediately before it. Selecting an earlier history state also removes later actions, so save a duplicate first and note which operations you intend to keep.
Final Cut Pro
Final Cut Pro’s editing model is non-destructive. Apple describes it plainly: “No matter how you edit clips in Final Cut Pro, the underlying media is never touched.” A color correction, look, or adjustment can therefore be removed from the clip or timeline while the camera original remains available for a fresh grade.
DaVinci Resolve
Resolve keeps a separate undo stack for Color-page grades. With the project open, use the Color page’s history or undo controls to back out the unwanted grade at the clip level. Do not close the project before deciding which state to keep: Resolve purges undo history when the project closes.
Check for baked-in color
A grade that exists only inside the project is reversible through the project. A grade rendered into a new media file is not removable from that file; you need the ungraded source or an earlier render. If the source is available, disable the project grade and compare a short export before rendering the complete sequence.

How do I fix an AI crop, zoom, framing, or aspect-ratio change?
Restore the clip’s earlier crop, scale, position, and transform values in the project. If you no longer know the values, use an earlier project state rather than guessing from the rendered image.
Using Premiere Pro History
Open the History panel and select the state before the crop, scale, position, or aspect-ratio operation. Premiere returns the project to that point, removing every later action in that session. Save the restored state as a new project version, then reapply any later edits that were intentionally made after the framing change.
When the original clip is still linked
Reset the transform or crop on the clip, inspect the full frame at the sequence’s display size, and then confirm that the sequence aspect ratio is the one you intended. A framing problem can come from clip-level transforms, a timeline-wide adjustment, or a changed sequence format; identify which level changed before resetting anything.

When only an export remains
You cannot recover the original crop coordinates automatically from a rendered file. You can place the export in a new sequence and reframe it manually, but every zoom or pan decision must be estimated from the visible pixels. If the export contains hard cuts, Final Cut Pro’s Edit Detection can help divide it into separate clips before reframing or grading.

When a clip was rendered and replaced for playback, select the sequence and choose Clip > Restore Unrendered. Adobe says this restores the original unrendered clip or After Effects composition.
- Select the sequence containing the rendered replacement.
- Choose Clip in the application menu.
- Click Restore Unrendered.
- Play the restored section and verify that the expected source clip or composition is back.
- Save a new project version before making further changes.
Check the underlying source after restoration. If the original file changed while the rendered replacement was in use, the restored clip includes those changes. Confirm the source version, frame rate, and media path before exporting again.
How does Final Cut Pro help when the project still exists?
Final Cut Pro’s non-destructive workflow lets you remove timeline edits, effects, and color changes without touching the underlying media. Reopen the project, select the affected clip or adjustment, and return it to the earlier state or remove the operation while leaving the source event media intact.
Keep project versions rather than relying on one library state. A versioned copy preserves the edit decisions you may want to retain while you test a clean framing, color, or audio restoration in another copy.
How can Final Cut Pro Edit Detection rebuild an export?
Edit Detection is a reconstruction aid when the project is unavailable but a finished export remains. It analyzes the export, identifies original hard-cut boundaries, and splits the file into separate clips so you can re-edit, reframe, or grade each section.
- Import the finished export into Final Cut Pro.
- Run Edit Detection on the imported file.
- Review each detected boundary and correct false positives or missed cuts.
- Place the resulting clips in a new timeline with the intended sequence format.
- Apply new framing, color, and audio work manually, checking every transition against the export.
Apple notes that Edit Detection may not detect fades. It also does not support titles, graphics, generators, audio clips, still images, or gap clips. The tool recovers visible hard-cut structure, not the original timeline metadata, hidden clips, effect parameters, or source links.

How do I recover an AI edit in DaVinci Resolve?
Resolve’s Media, Cut, Edit, and Fairlight pages share a multiple-undo stack, while Fusion clips and Color-page clips have their own undo stacks. Use the history belonging to the page where the change was made, and keep the project open until the restoration is complete.
For picture and timeline changes
On the Edit page, step back through the shared undo history until the crop, transform, or replacement disappears. If the operation occurred inside a Fusion clip, use Fusion’s own history rather than expecting the Edit-page stack to expose every internal node change.
For grades
Open the Color page and use its separate history to return the affected clip to the pre-grade state. This is preferable to grading an already rendered export because the original clip and node structure remain available.
For audio
Use Fairlight’s undo history for Fairlight operations, then audition the restored section in context with the picture. Save a new project version before closing; Resolve purges undo history when the project closes.
What can and cannot be restored from a finished export?
A finished export contains rendered pictures and sound, not the complete edit decisions, source links, effect parameters, or hidden AI state. You may be able to approximate a look or crop, but an exact restoration requires the original media and a project state that predates the unwanted operation.
- Audio: You can trim, replace, or remix what is audible, but muted dialogue or overwritten sound cannot be extracted if no separate source exists.
- Color: You can create a new grade that looks closer to the original, but the prior grade settings are not recoverable from rendered pixels alone.
- Framing: You can zoom out only where pixels remain in the export; cropped-away image area is permanently absent.
- Structure: Edit Detection can identify hard cuts, but unsupported fades, titles, graphics, generators, stills, audio-only clips, and gaps require manual reconstruction.
Keep the export as a reference movie and rebuild in a new project. Do not treat a reconstructed timeline as the original: its clip boundaries, timing, and settings are estimates unless you locate the source project.

What should I check before exporting the restored version?
- Watch several seconds before and after every restored boundary for pops, missing words, or abrupt room tone.
- Inspect the full frame for unintended crop, scale, position, or aspect-ratio changes.
- Compare skin tones, shadows, highlights, and neutral objects against the ungraded source where available.
- Confirm that offline-media warnings are resolved and that the restored clip points to the intended original file.
- Export a short test covering the repaired sections before committing to a full-length render.
- Save the repaired project as a new version and retain the pre-restoration copy.
What are the most common restoration mistakes?
Overwriting the only project
Saving over the project removes an easy comparison point and can make a failed correction harder to unwind. Version the project before every major restoration attempt.

Restoring the picture but not the sound
Generative Extend treats dialogue differently from ambience and effects. Check linked components separately and replace the original dialogue when speech was muted.
Assuming an export contains editable settings
Rendered media does not carry the complete crop, grade, source-link, or AI-state information. Use the export as a visual reference while searching for the project and original media.
Closing Resolve or abandoning a Premiere session too soon

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I recover an AI video edit after closing the editor?
Only if a saved project version or duplicate still contains the pre-edit state. Premiere’s session History is not a substitute for a saved version, and Resolve clears undo history when the project closes, so reopen the newest unaffected copy you have.
Will Premiere Generative Extend restore spoken dialogue automatically?
No. Generative Extend mutes dialogue during an extension while extending room tone, effects, and background audio. Restore the original dialogue component from the source clip or an earlier project state.
Can Edit Detection recover fades and titles from an exported movie?
No. It is designed to identify hard-cut boundaries and does not support fades, titles, graphics, generators, audio clips, still images, or gap clips. Those elements must be reconstructed by hand.
