A tab missing from search is not necessarily gone: it may still be open in another window, be listed among recently closed tabs, or be available in browsing history. Use the recovery steps for your browser below. If you closed a whole window, use its window-restore option rather than reopening tabs one at a time.
First check whether the tab is still open
Search results may not show every page you expect. Check other open windows and any inactive tab groups before treating the page as closed. In Microsoft Edge, Tab search searches open tabs across Edge windows as well as recently closed tabs; availability can vary by device, market, and browser version. Microsoft’s Edge Tab search overview explains its scope.
If you use Safari on Mac and the page may be open on another Apple device, check iCloud Tabs. This requires Safari to be enabled in iCloud on the devices and the same Apple Account to be used. Apple’s iCloud Tabs setup guide lists the setup requirements. Safari’s cross-device list does not show private tabs or windows, according to Apple’s Safari for Mac guidance.
Restore the tab in the browser you used
Google Chrome on a computer
Press Ctrl+Shift+T on Windows, Linux, or Chromebook, or Command+Shift+T on Mac, to reopen a recently closed tab. If the page belonged to a closed window, click the three-dot menu, point to History, and select the window under “Recently Closed.” When the window contained multiple tabs, Chrome shows the tab count; select “Restore Window.” Google’s instructions were published October 11, 2022, so menu wording may change: Recover browser tabs instantly with this Chrome feature.

Google Chrome on Android
In Chrome’s tab search, look for the page by a word from its title or address. Google says Android tab search can include recently closed tabs and tabs from other devices; to find tab groups in those results, you must be signed in and have Sync turned on. You can also restore inactive tabs from the tab switcher. Follow Google’s Chrome for Android tab-management instructions; the phone interface differs from desktop.
Microsoft Edge
Open Tab search and enter a keyword from the page title or content. Edge Tab search covers open and recently closed tabs and can search across open Edge windows. It works with vertical tabs and InPrivate, but an InPrivate search only shows tabs from that same browsing mode. Tab search is not available on Edge mobile. Mozilla Firefox on a computer
To reopen the last closed tab, press Ctrl+Shift+T on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+T on Mac. Alternatively, open History and choose Recently Closed Tabs. For a whole closed window, choose History > Recently Closed Windows. If Firefox restarted or crashed, its previous-session restore option can recover tabs and windows from the last session. Mozilla explains the restore choices and settings in its previous-session guide.
If the missing page was in a tab group, use Firefox’s tab-list controls to reopen a saved and closed group, or find its tabs in browsing history. Firefox tab groups are local and do not sync through Firefox Sync; groups in a private window are deleted when that window closes. Details are in Mozilla’s tab-groups guide.

Safari on Mac
Use History > Recently Closed to choose a page, or History > Reopen Last Closed Tab for the most recently closed tab. For a closed window, choose History > Reopen Last Closed Window; to restore the previous session’s windows, choose History > Reopen All Windows from Last Session. Apple says Safari for Mac keeps website history for as long as a year, but history retention does not guarantee that a closed tab or session can be restored. Safari on iPhone or iPad
Open Safari’s All Tabs view, then touch and hold the New Tab button to see recently closed tabs. Select the page to reopen it. The tab-bar layout can affect what you see; Apple provides device-specific steps for iPhone and iPad.

If a whole window or session disappeared
Use the window-level recovery command when several tabs vanished together. Chrome lists recently closed windows in History, Firefox has a Recently Closed Windows list, and Safari on Mac offers Reopen Last Closed Window and Reopen All Windows from Last Session. These options restore a window or session as a unit instead of requiring you to recover each tab individually.
After a crash or restart, Firefox can restore the prior session automatically or let you request it. Safari for Mac provides the Reopen All Windows from Last Session command. The browsers’ recovery options depend on session data still being available; cleared history, private-browsing settings, extensions, updates, or corrupted session data can affect whether Firefox can restore a page. Mozilla describes these factors in its session troubleshooting guidance.

When search and recently closed lists do not find it
- Check browsing history for the site or a distinctive word from its title. History is useful when the tab is no longer present in the tab-search results, but it opens the page as a visit rather than restoring its former tab position.
- Check another browser window or device if you use cross-device tabs. Chrome’s cited Android tab-search results require sign-in and Sync for cross-device tab-group results; Safari’s iCloud Tabs requires the Apple setup described above.
- Consider whether the page was in private browsing. Private-mode pages may not appear in ordinary history or cross-device lists; Edge InPrivate Tab search is limited to the same mode, and Apple says Safari private tabs and windows are not shown in its cross-device list.
- If the browser’s session or history data has been cleared or is unavailable, the documented recovery commands may not bring the tab back. No browser’s listed feature guarantees recovery in every such case.
Save important tabs before closing them
If you want to preserve a group of pages, Chrome’s desktop “Bookmark All Tabs” command saves the open tabs in a bookmark folder. That keeps the links available even if you later close the window, without relying on a recently closed list.
