In the Services window, right-click Print Spooler and select Restart. This restarts the Windows service that manages print jobs without deleting the files in the print queue.
Restart Print Spooler from Services
- Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
- Type
services.mscand press Enter. - In the Services window, locate Print Spooler.
- Right-click Print Spooler and select Restart.
These steps apply to Windows 11 and Windows 10. If the service is not running, the available action may be Start rather than Restart; select it to start the service. Microsoft describes Print Spooler as the Windows service involved in managing print jobs. Microsoft’s Windows guidance covers the service-not-running error.
If print jobs remain stuck
Try cancelling pending jobs from the printer’s queue first. If they will not clear, Microsoft’s deeper reset procedure stops the service, removes the files representing queued jobs, and then starts the service again. Deleting these files removes the pending print jobs; they will not remain queued for printing.
- Open Services by pressing Windows key + R, entering
services.msc, and pressing Enter. - Right-click Print Spooler and choose Stop. Wait for it to stop before proceeding.
- Open File Explorer and enter
%WINDIR%system32spoolPRINTERSin the address bar. - Delete the files inside the
PRINTERSfolder. Do not delete the folder itself. - Return to Services, right-click Print Spooler, and choose Start.
- If the service’s Startup Type is not set to Automatic, open its properties and set it to Automatic.
Microsoft presents clearing the spool folder as a troubleshooting measure when simpler fixes have not worked, rather than the first step for every printing problem. See Microsoft’s printer connection and printing troubleshooting steps.

Microsoft documents these alternatives in guidance for supported Windows Server versions, so they should not be read as client-specific instructions for Windows 10 or 11. Run the terminal with administrator privileges.
Command Prompt
- Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
- Run

PowerShell
- Open PowerShell as an administrator.

If the problem returns or the printer still appears offline
A service restart can clear a temporary spooler problem, but it cannot fix every cause of a printer failure. Check that the printer is connected and powered on, and inspect its status and queue for paused printing or pending jobs. Microsoft’s offline-printer troubleshooting guidance includes both queue checks and restarting Print Spooler.
If the service keeps stopping, Microsoft’s Windows Server troubleshooting guidance identifies system instability or resource issues, Group Policy settings that disable or stop the service, outdated drivers, and antivirus interference as possible factors. An organization may intentionally disable the service through policy as a security measure. For a Windows 10 or 11 home PC, start with the Windows client support flow and the guidance for the specific printer’s driver rather than assuming server-specific causes apply.
