You resize a Windows 365 Cloud PC from the Microsoft Intune admin center or the Windows 365 Business portal by choosing the device, selecting Resize, and assigning an available target size. You can increase or decrease RAM and vCPU; you can increase storage, but you cannot reduce the OS disk. The action preserves the Cloud PC’s user and disk data, but it disconnects the user and can make the service unavailable for about 15 to 20 minutes, so save work and sign out before starting.
The exact steps depend on whether the Cloud PC has a directly assigned license or is licensed through a Microsoft Entra group. The sections below cover both models, bulk operations, permissions, inventory checks, and the failure conditions that commonly make Resize unavailable.
What can you change when you resize a Windows 365 Cloud PC?
A resize changes the Cloud PC’s licensed hardware profile while keeping the existing user and disk data. Microsoft’s documented limits are directional: RAM and CPU can move up or down, while storage can only move up.

Resize is not a data-migration or reprovisioning workflow. The remote action is designed to preserve the user and disk data already on the Cloud PC, but the user’s session is interrupted while the service applies the new profile.

What must be true before the Resize command is available?
Check the device state, target-license inventory, administrator role, and network prerequisites before opening the action. A missing requirement can hide, disable, or fail the operation.
The Cloud PC must be provisioned
The device must show the Provisioned state. A device that is provisioning, reprovisioning, in a failed state, or otherwise unavailable cannot be resized until it returns to a supported state.
An available target license is required
The target-size list is generated from available inventory. If the required SKU is absent, the resize cannot start. An organization can obtain additional Windows 365 licenses through Microsoft’s listed purchase channels—Enterprise Agreement (EA), Cloud Solution Provider (CSP), Microsoft Customer Agreement (MCA), or Web Direct—then retry after the license is available.

Use an administrator role that can change the device and license
For Enterprise Cloud PCs with directly assigned licenses, Microsoft documents the Intune Service Administrator role, or the documented combinations of Intune Reader with the relevant Cloud PC or Windows 365 administrator roles. Group-based licensing also requires permission to manage Microsoft Entra group membership and licensing.
For Windows 365 Business direct-license operations, use the Windows 365 Administrator role or a custom role containing equivalent permissions.
Check the network requirement for hybrid Entra join
An Entra hybrid-joined Cloud PC deployed on a bring-your-own-network configuration needs a second IP address while the move occurs. If the network has no spare address, the resize can fail even when the license and administrator permissions are correct.

How do I resize one Enterprise Cloud PC with a directly assigned license?
Use the Intune admin center, select the provisioned Cloud PC, choose an offered target size, and submit the resize. With direct assignment, the service automatically unassigns the original license and assigns the selected license.
- Sign in to the Microsoft Intune admin center with an account that has the required administrator permissions.
- Open Devices > All Devices.
- Select the Cloud PC you want to change.
- Choose Resize from the device actions.
- Review the sizes offered by your available inventory and select the target configuration.
- Select Resize again to submit the action.
- Confirm that the user has saved work and signed out before the service disconnects the session.
After submission, the original directly assigned license is removed and the new one is assigned automatically as part of the operation. Do not attempt to perform a second manual license swap for the same device while this action is processing.
How do I resize a Windows 365 Business Cloud PC?
The Business portal provides the equivalent single-device workflow. You select the organization’s Cloud PC, open its device actions, choose an available size, and submit.
- Sign in at
windows365.microsoft.comwith the Windows 365 Administrator role or an equivalent custom role. - Open the organization’s list of Cloud PCs.
- Select the device that is in the Provisioned state.
- Choose Devices > Resize.
- Select one of the sizes currently offered by licensing inventory.
- Submit the resize and wait for the operation to finish before reconnecting.
Microsoft’s Business guidance says access may be unavailable for approximately 15 to 20 minutes. Treat that as an expected service interruption rather than a sign that the operation has failed, unless the device later reports an error or does not return to service.
How does group-based Enterprise licensing change the procedure?
With group-based licensing, starting Resize only places the Cloud PC in a waiting state. You must complete both license changes—remove the source license and assign the target license—before the service can begin resizing.
- In Intune, select the provisioned Cloud PC and start Resize.
- Choose the target size. The device moves to Resize pending license.
- Remove the source license from the applicable Microsoft Entra group or assignment.
- Assign the target-size license through the appropriate Entra group or licensing assignment.
- Verify that both the source-license removal and target-license assignment have completed.
The order of the two licensing changes does not matter, but the resize does not begin until both conditions are satisfied. Microsoft documents a 48-hour pending window: if the source license is removed but the target license is not assigned in time, the Cloud PC enters a grace period; if neither required change is completed, it returns to Provisioned.

In a hybrid Entra environment, directory synchronization can take up to 30 minutes. Allow that synchronization time before concluding that a correctly configured group-based change has been ignored.
How do I resize many Cloud PCs at once?
Use Intune’s bulk device action when multiple Cloud PCs need the same source-to-target change. Microsoft supports resizing up to 5,000 Cloud PCs in one operation and recommends validating a small group first.
- Open the Microsoft Intune admin center.
- Go to Devices > All Devices > Bulk device actions.
- Choose OS (Windows) > Cloud PCs > Resize.
- Select the source size and the target size.
- Choose the individual devices or the group members to include.
- Review the operation, confirm the user-impact window, and submit it.
Bulk selection does not bypass licensing rules. Devices using group-based licensing still require removal of the source license and assignment of the target license. For a production rollout, start with a small representative set so you can confirm inventory, permissions, network capacity, and application behavior before expanding the scope.

The resize disconnects the active user, so the user cannot continue working through the transition. Microsoft’s Windows 365 Business guidance gives an expected access gap of roughly 15 to 20 minutes; actual completion depends on the device and licensing state.
- Ask the user to save documents and close applications before you submit the action.
- Schedule the change in a maintenance window rather than during a meeting, shift, or data-entry session.
- Tell the user that an existing remote session will be terminated and that they should reconnect only after the device is available again.
- For bulk changes, notify every affected group and stagger work if a simultaneous interruption would disrupt operations.
A resize preserves user and disk data, but it does not preserve unsaved work that exists only in an open application session. Coordinate the change with the person using the Cloud PC, especially when the operation is initiated by an administrator rather than the user.
Why is Resize greyed out or missing?
Most unavailable Resize actions are caused by device state, licensing inventory, role permissions, or an unsupported configuration. Check the following in order.

The license is missing, inactive, or expired
If the target SKU is not available, it will not appear in the size list. A warning or expired license can also grey out Resize until the license becomes active. Confirm the subscription and inventory, then refresh the device view after the licensing change is visible.
The device is not Provisioned
Wait for provisioning or another device action to finish. Resize is intended for a Cloud PC that has completed provisioning; starting another action at the same time can leave the command unavailable.
The account lacks the required role
Use an Intune Service Administrator or an approved combination of Intune Reader and Cloud PC/Windows 365 administrator roles for Enterprise operations. For Business, use Windows 365 Administrator or a custom role with equivalent rights. Group-based changes additionally require Entra group and licensing permissions.
The configuration is a GPU Cloud PC
GPU Cloud PCs are unsupported for Resize. Their presence in a selection list does not make the operation supported.
A hybrid BYON deployment has no spare IP address
Provide the second address required during the move, then retry. An address shortage can produce a failure after the command has been submitted rather than making the button unavailable in advance.

Look for the Resize pending license state and verify both licensing changes. In hybrid directories, allow up to 30 minutes for synchronization; do not repeatedly submit new resize requests while the original licensing transition is propagating.

Which resize approach should I use?
Choose the workflow based on licensing model and scope, not simply on whether the target is larger or smaller.

If the target size is absent, changing the administrator or repeating the command will not create capacity. Make the appropriate license available first, then return to the resize workflow.
What should I verify after the operation?
Use the device record and the user’s next connection as your validation points. A successful change should leave the Cloud PC available with the selected target configuration and the original user and disk data intact.
- Confirm the device has returned to an available, provisioned state rather than remaining in a pending or failed state.
- Check that the intended target size, not an unintended intermediate choice, is associated with the device.
- For direct licensing, verify that the old license is no longer assigned and the new license is assigned automatically.
- For group licensing, verify the Entra source removal and target assignment separately.
- Ask the user to reconnect and confirm that required files and profile data are present.

How should I announce a Cloud PC resize to users?
Give users a specific maintenance window and identify the expected 15–20-minute access interruption. Ask them to save work and sign out before the window, and provide a separate contact path for anyone who cannot reconnect afterward.
Can I purchase a target license if its size is not listed?
Yes. Microsoft lists Enterprise Agreement, Cloud Solution Provider, Microsoft Customer Agreement, and Web Direct as channels for additional Windows 365 licenses. The target size becomes selectable only after the required license is available in the organization’s inventory.
What does the “Resize pending license” status mean?

Is a resize appropriate for a GPU Cloud PC?
