There is no single nationwide process for getting automated license plate reader (ALPR) records about your vehicle—or for correcting them. Start by identifying the law-enforcement agency that may have collected or accessed the data, then check that agency’s current policy and the law in its state. Access may be restricted, records may have been deleted under retention rules, and the sources available do not establish a general right to amend or erase a record.

Start with the agency that may have the records

ALPR cameras can be operated by different law-enforcement agencies, and data may be shared. The agency whose camera was nearest to you is not necessarily the only one that collected or accessed information about your vehicle. If it traveled through a multi-agency area, you may need to contact more than one agency.

  1. List likely agencies. Consider the places and dates your vehicle traveled and which local, county, state, or other law-enforcement agencies operate in those areas. An agency’s ALPR transparency page or policy may identify its program and contact information.
  2. Check each agency’s current policy. Look for its ALPR policy, privacy or transparency page, records-request instructions, and any named program contact. Policies can change: for example, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department transparency page reports that its policy was updated on April 22, 2026.
  3. Find the right request channel. Use the agency’s records custodian or public-records portal if it provides one. If the correct contact is unclear, ask the agency which office handles ALPR records and whether a vehicle owner can submit a direct request.

Ask what state law and agency policy govern access to individually identifiable ALPR detections. Do not assume that the ordinary public-records process applies to these records in the same way it applies to other agency documents.

What state and local examples show

Access, retention, auditing, and handling rules vary. These examples are limited to the named jurisdictions; they do not establish a national rule.

Jurisdiction and source Access to identifiable detections Retention information Other relevant information
Washington state statutes RCW 10.130.050 generally excludes ALPR data from disclosure under the Washington Public Records Act, with a narrow bona fide research provision that does not include individually identifiable information. RCW 10.130.040 generally limits covered agency-collected data to 21 days, subject to statutory exceptions. RCW 10.130.080 requires access audit trails and an internal audit at least once each year. Whether particular audit records can be disclosed is a separate legal question.
Portland, Oregon, Police Bureau Directive 0625.00 The directive says ALPR images or data are for law-enforcement use and are not open to the public. It describes handling certain suspect-vehicle-list requests on a plate-by-plate basis with consultation. Not stated in the cited directive material. The directive is an agency rule, not a rule for all Oregon agencies.
Palo Alto, California, Police Department ALPR page Not stated on the cited page. The department says it considers 30 days sufficient. This is Palo Alto’s stated view, not a statewide retention period. Not stated on the cited page.
Los Angeles County, California, Sheriff’s Department transparency page The page describes the program and policy; a current policy should be checked for detailed access rules. Not stated on the cited page. The page says ALPR data may be used for listed public-safety purposes and may not be used for civil immigration enforcement; it reports an April 22, 2026 policy update.
North Carolina statute The cited statute limits disclosure to specified law-enforcement purposes. Not stated in the cited material. The statute includes a preservation-request mechanism with state-specific conditions. It is not a nationwide individual access right.

The Washington examples illustrate why detections, access logs, sharing records, and other administrative records should be treated as separate request categories. A requirement to maintain an audit trail does not by itself mean the underlying detections or the audit records must be released to an individual requester.

  • The license plate number and issuing state.
  • A date range, as narrow as you can make it, and any relevant locations.
  • The type of record sought, such as ALPR detections associated with the plate.
  • A request for the legal basis for any withholding and instructions for seeking review, if available.
  • If relevant, a separate inquiry about access logs, sharing records, or records concerning a possible plate or vehicle mismatch.

You can phrase the request as a question rather than asserting an entitlement: “Please tell me whether your agency accepts a vehicle owner’s request for ALPR detections associated with [plate and issuing state] for [date range]. If so, please provide the records, or explain the legal basis for withholding them and any available review procedure. Please also tell me whether related access or sharing records can be requested separately.” Adapt this to the agency’s form and rules. It is a practical request, not a guarantee of disclosure.

Timing matters. A short retention period may mean a record is no longer held by the time you ask. Washington’s general 21-day limit for covered data has statutory exceptions; it should not be assumed to apply outside Washington. Palo Alto’s 30-day statement likewise applies only to that department’s stated practice. If you need a record preserved, ask promptly whether the agency has a preservation process and what conditions apply. North Carolina’s statute is one state-specific example, not proof that other agencies must preserve data on request.

How to review records if the agency provides them

There is no uniform ALPR record format established by these sources. Read the agency’s field descriptions and distinguish what the record actually documents from what it does not.

  • Check the plate and issuing state. Compare the characters and state with registration documents or other reliable records. A misread character or incorrect state can make a result appear to concern a different vehicle.
  • Check date, time, and location. Compare them with independent records you already have, such as travel, parking, or service documentation. Account for any time-zone or timestamp conventions the agency identifies.
  • Review any vehicle descriptors or image. If the record includes a vehicle description or image, compare it with reliable information about the vehicle. Do not assume every agency keeps the same fields or provides an image.
  • Separate a camera read from later action. A detection is not, by itself, proof that an officer stopped, investigated, or took action involving the vehicle. Look for separate records before drawing that conclusion.
  • Note gaps and uncertainty. Record which entry you question, what appears wrong, and what independent information supports your concern. A discrepancy may require clarification rather than proving an error.

Ask how an apparent error can be corrected or reviewed

The cited sources do not establish a nationwide process or general individual right to correct ALPR records. If you find a specific problem, contact the agency’s records custodian or ALPR program contact and ask whether its policy allows correction, annotation, preservation, or review.

  1. Identify the exact entry, including any date, time, location, or record identifier supplied by the agency.
  2. Describe the suspected error precisely—for example, a plate-character mismatch or a vehicle description that appears inconsistent with your vehicle.
  3. Attach relevant supporting documents, limiting personal information to what is necessary to explain the discrepancy.
  4. Ask what action the agency can take under its policy, whether it will review the entry, and how it will communicate the outcome.
  5. Keep a copy of your request, attachments, and the agency’s response.

Do not describe a request for correction as a guaranteed right unless the relevant law or policy for that agency provides one. An agency may be unable to change a record, may instead add an annotation, or may have no process for handling such a request; the answer depends on its rules.

If the agency denies access or does not respond

Read the response for the specific legal exemption or policy cited, and check whether it explains an appeal or review route. If the response is unclear, ask which rule governs the request and whether a narrower category—such as an access log or administrative record—can be requested separately. Those records may also be restricted, and a separate request does not make them automatically disclosable.
