Report the ad inside the platform first, but preserve its evidence before you do. Save the exact URL, account or page, sponsor disclaimer, date and time, screenshots or a short recording, and the reason the claim is misleading. Do not repost or quote-share a deepfake. Then use the ad or post menu to choose the closest category—election misinformation, voter suppression, impersonation, scam or manipulated media—and keep the submission confirmation. For false voting instructions, threats, suspected criminal conduct or campaign impersonation in the United States, also consider the FBI, local law enforcement or the Federal Election Commission (FEC). Voters elsewhere should contact their election authority and follow local reporting channels.
What should I save before reporting a misleading political deepfake?
Preserve enough context for a reviewer to identify the content without spreading it further. Open the original ad or post, not a repost that may have been edited, and record:
- The complete URL, platform name, account or page name, and any ad-library or transparency identifier.
- The sponsor name, “paid for by” disclaimer, campaign disclaimer and any AI or political-ad label.
- The exact wording of the claim, including on-screen text, audio, caption and call to action.
- The date, time, country or state, and how the ad reached you.
- Screenshots or a short screen recording showing the claim, caption, comments, labels and surrounding context.
- Why the content appears misleading and a link or citation to an authoritative correction, such as a state election office notice or primary government document.
- Any threat, doxxing, impersonation, suspicious donation request or instruction intended to suppress or disrupt voting.
Keep the original files unchanged and note the time zone. Blur private information before sharing evidence with anyone who does not need it. Do not download and repost the video “for exposure”; every additional share can increase its reach and remove context.

How do I report the ad inside a social-media platform?
Use the report control attached to the specific ad, post, video or account. Menus differ by country, app version and election cycle, so choose the closest available category rather than waiting for an exact “AI political deepfake” option.
- Open the original item and its three-dot, share or “Why am I seeing this ad?” menu.
- Select Report or the platform’s equivalent.
- Choose the most specific reason available: election misinformation, voter interference or suppression, deceptive behavior, impersonation, scam, manipulated media, fraud, harassment or threats.
- Enter a short, factual explanation. State what is claimed, what is false or deceptive, who may be harmed and which official source contradicts it. Include the original URL if the form permits.
- Submit the report and save the confirmation number, email or screenshot. Record the date and time in your evidence log.
- If the item is an advertisement, report both the ad and—when the menu allows—the account or page that paid for it.
Do not select a more dramatic category merely to obtain faster action. A precise description helps reviewers route the case and gives investigators a usable record.
Facebook and Instagram
On Facebook or Instagram, open the ad’s menu and report the specific violation. Use Meta’s About this ad information and Ad Library record to capture the sponsor, targeting and disclosure details before the ad disappears. Meta’s 2026 midterm guidance says advertisers must disclose AI creation or alteration in certain ads about social issues, elections or politics; the disclosure appears in the ad and Ad Library. Meta says its labeling approach is still evolving.
Meta’s April 2024 policy says it can add an “AI info” label when it detects industry-standard AI signals or when a user discloses AI content. Content that violates voter-interference, harassment, violence or other Community Standards may be removed. Altered content rated by independent fact-checkers can receive an information label and reduced distribution, rather than automatic removal. Report the policy violation that applies to the conduct, not simply the presence of synthetic media.
YouTube
Use the three-dot menu on the video, Short, comment or channel and choose Report. Select the closest option for election misinformation, harmful or deceptive content, impersonation, scams or privacy violations, then describe the specific claim and attach your evidence where the form permits. YouTube says certain misleading or deceptive content with a serious risk of harm is prohibited, including voter suppression, false claims about candidate eligibility and encouragement to interfere with democratic processes.

YouTube asks creators to disclose content generated or meaningfully altered with AI, but states that disclosure “is not a free pass to violate our policies.” Therefore report a false voting instruction or threat even when the video carries an AI disclosure.
TikTok, X and other services
Open the item’s current in-app report menu and help center. Categories and escalation forms vary by country, product and election cycle; preserve the exact URL and screenshots because a generic “misinformation” option may be the only available route. Include the account, sponsor and any ad identifier in the narrative.
A 2024 Center for Democracy & Technology comparison found materially different political-ad disclosure policies: Google/YouTube, Meta and Reddit had disclosure requirements in the situations it examined, while Snap and X did not require disclosure in that comparison. That is historical context, not a universal current rule, and it did not establish a single TikTok standard. Never assume that an unlabeled ad is automatically illegal or that a label means the claim is false.
What transparency records should I check?
Transparency records can preserve information that is not visible in the feed. On Meta, open About this ad and the Ad Library entry. Capture the sponsor, creative, dates, disclaimer and any AI disclosure. Compare duplicate versions of the ad if the library shows them; different edits can carry different claims.
For other platforms, look for an ad-transparency center, “Why this ad,” political-ad archive or account-information panel. Availability and retention periods differ, so save the record immediately. If an archive does not show an item, retain your own URL and screenshots rather than treating the absence as proof that the ad never ran.

When should I report a political deepfake to government or law enforcement?
Platform reporting addresses the service’s rules. Government or law-enforcement reporting is appropriate when the content could affect voting access, threaten people or constitute fraud. Make the additional report after preserving the platform evidence.
United States: voting logistics, threats and suspected crimes
The FBI advises the public to seek trustworthy election sources and report potential election crimes, including disinformation about the manner, time or place of voting. FBI and CISA’s October 18, 2024 public-service announcement says generative AI lowers the barrier for sophisticated influence campaigns and identifies synthetic images, video, audio and fake personas as tactics used in misleading election narratives. Report suspicious criminal activity to an FBI field office or appropriate local law enforcement, especially when there are threats, doxxing, extortion, hacking, impersonation or an instruction designed to stop someone from voting.
For polling dates, hours, locations, registration and eligibility, contact the relevant state, county or municipal election office. The U.S. Election Assistance Commission emphasizes that these details require high accuracy and provides AI-election-disinformation resources. Verify the claim with that office before forwarding it or describing it as false.
United States: when the FEC may have jurisdiction
The FEC published an interpretive rule on September 27, 2024, after a September 19 vote. It explains that the Federal Election Campaign Act’s fraudulent-misrepresentation prohibition applies regardless of technology: “The statute, and the Commission’s implementing regulation, is technology neutral.” The rule can cover specified fraudulent representations involving candidates, parties and solicitations, including campaign-ad impersonation, but it is not a general federal ban on every inaccurate political statement.
Submit an FEC complaint when the facts fit that limited jurisdiction—for example, a deceptive representation presented as coming from a candidate, party or campaign, or a fraudulent fundraising solicitation. Include the ad, sponsor, dates, payment or disclaimer information and your explanation. The FEC assesses cases individually; an AI-generated element alone does not decide jurisdiction.

United Kingdom: election administration and local police
Report the content to the platform and the political party involved. For false information about election administration, ask the relevant election officials to notify the local Returning Officer. Contact police where the post contains threats, fraud, harassment or another potential crime. Procedures and legal thresholds differ across the UK, so identify the nation and local authority in your record.
What information should my report contain?
A reviewer should be able to answer four questions quickly: what was said, where it appeared, why it is misleading and what harm could result. Use a compact structure:
- Claim: quote the exact sentence or describe the image, voice or instruction.
- Location: platform, URL, account, sponsor, ad-library ID, date and time.
- Problem: identify the manipulated identity, fabricated endorsement, false eligibility statement, incorrect voting logistics, fake result, deceptive fundraising or other issue.
- Verification: name the official election office, court filing, campaign statement or primary document that contradicts the claim.
- Risk: explain whether it could suppress voting, trigger violence, expose private data, divert donations or impersonate a candidate.
- Attachments: screenshots or recording that show the full context, labels and caption without editing the original evidence.
Keep the explanation neutral and specific. “This is fake” is less useful than “The video says polling places close at noon on Tuesday; the county election office lists 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday.”

What if the platform removes the ad before I finish reporting?
Do not assume removal means the record is preserved. Keep the URL, screenshots, recording, sponsor information and timestamp you already captured. If the platform’s form rejects a dead link, explain that the item disappeared after you saved it and attach the evidence; send the same package to the relevant election office, law-enforcement agency or FEC channel when the harm warrants escalation.

What if my report is rejected or nothing happens?
Check the notice for a reason, then use the platform’s available review or appeal path. Resubmit only when you can add a material fact—such as a corrected voting time, a threat, an impersonation detail or an ad-library identifier—rather than filing multiple identical reports. Keep a log of submission numbers and dates, and escalate urgent safety risks outside the platform instead of waiting for an automated decision.
If the content is still online, warn people privately with a link to the authoritative correction rather than circulating the deepfake. Describe the false claim without embedding or quoting more of the manipulated media than necessary.
How can I verify a claim before calling it misinformation?
Start with the official election office for the jurisdiction named in the ad. Confirm dates, hours, polling locations, registration rules and eligibility there; the EAC specifically highlights these details as requiring high accuracy. For candidate statements, consult the campaign’s verified channel and primary public records, then compare the exact wording and date.

Separate three questions: Is the media synthetic or altered? Is the factual claim false or materially misleading? Does it violate a platform rule or law? An ad can be AI-generated yet factually accurate, or authentic footage can be paired with a false caption. Your report is strongest when it answers all three independently.
What is the safest reporting workflow?
- Pause: do not click donation links, contact an apparent impersonator or share the media.
- Preserve: capture the URL, sponsor, labels, full context, timestamp and jurisdiction.
- Verify: check the relevant election office or primary document.
- Report in-platform: choose the closest specific category and save confirmation.
- Check transparency: inspect Meta’s About this ad and Ad Library, or equivalent records elsewhere.
- Escalate harm: contact election officials, the FBI, local police or the FEC when the facts fit their remit; use UK Returning Officer and police channels where applicable.
- Monitor safely: retain updates and avoid amplifying the original content.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I report a political deepfake without revealing my identity?
Most platforms let you submit a standard report without publicly identifying yourself to the account that posted the ad, but the platform may retain account and device data. Government complaints can require contact information or a formal declaration, so read the privacy notice and avoid including unnecessary personal details in screenshots.
Should I contact the campaign shown in the fake ad?
Use a verified official contact channel if you need to alert the real campaign, and do not reply to or click links in the suspicious ad. A private warning can help the campaign preserve its own records, but it should supplement—not replace—the platform and election-authority reports.
Can an AI-generated ad be legal if it is clearly labeled?
Yes. An AI disclosure addresses provenance, not truthfulness or every form of fraud. A labeled ad can still violate rules through voter suppression, threats, deceptive impersonation, privacy abuse or a materially false claim.

Do not pay through the ad. Verify the campaign and donation destination through an independently located official source, preserve the solicitation and report suspected fraudulent fundraising to the platform and, in the United States, the FEC or law enforcement when its jurisdiction fits.
