To report a misleading Etsy listing, sign in to Etsy.com, open the listing, choose Report this item to Etsy, select I don’t think it meets Etsy’s policies, choose the closest reason, add a factual explanation, and submit. In the Etsy app, press and hold the listing image in search results or use Report this item at the bottom of the listing. Reports are confidential and reviewed by Etsy’s specialist teams.
Use Etsy’s dedicated Reporting Portal instead when the issue is suspected copyright, trademark, patent, or other intellectual-property infringement. That route is limited to the rights owner or an authorized representative. Save the listing URL, listing ID, screenshots, and the exact mismatch before you report; a concise, rule-based explanation is more useful than speculation about the seller or the way an image was made.
Which Etsy reporting route should you use?
The correct route depends on what is wrong, how broad the concern is, and whether you own the right allegedly infringed.

Do not use an intellectual-property notice merely because a listing looks machine-generated. An IP notice concerns ownership of a protected work; a policy report concerns how the listing represents the product or how the seller uses Etsy.

How do I report a misleading Etsy listing on Etsy.com?
Use the listing’s own reporting control rather than sending a general complaint. The report is attached to the specific item and can be evaluated against its title, description, photographs, and claims.
- Sign in to Etsy.com. A signed-in account is required for the ordinary listing-reporting flow.
- Open the listing. Check that the page is the exact item you want to flag, then copy its URL and note the listing ID.
- Choose Report this item to Etsy. The control appears on the listing page.
- Select I don’t think it meets Etsy’s policies. This places the report in the general policy path rather than the separate intellectual-property process.
- Choose the closest reason. Select the option that best describes the observable problem, such as an inaccurate representation, prohibited content, or another policy concern.
- Add a factual note. Identify what the listing shows or promises, what a buyer would actually receive or reasonably expect, and which part appears inconsistent with Etsy’s rules.
- Submit once. Keep a copy of your note and the evidence you saved. Repeated submissions of the same violation are not useful.
Describe the discrepancy, not your theory about the seller’s motives. “The main image shows a three-dimensional engraved detail, but the description and alternate photos show a flat printed surface” is more actionable than “This seller is using fake AI.”
How do I report an Etsy listing in the mobile app?
The app provides two ways to reach the report control, depending on where you encounter the listing.

Before leaving the app, capture the listing’s photographs and text. A seller can edit a title, description, price, or image after you first view it, so contemporaneous screenshots preserve what prompted the report.
How do I report an entire Etsy shop?
Use a shop-level report when the concern is broader than one product—for example, when several listings repeat the same deceptive claim or appear to violate the same rule.
- Open the seller’s shop homepage.
- Choose Report this shop to Etsy.
- Select the concern that best describes the shop-wide issue.
- Explain the pattern and identify representative listing URLs or IDs.
- Submit the report once, keeping your screenshots and notes.
A shop report should still be specific. List the individual examples that establish the pattern instead of alleging that every product is problematic without evidence.

When should you use Etsy’s intellectual-property Reporting Portal?
Use the Reporting Portal for suspected copyright, trademark, patent, or other intellectual-property infringement. Etsy requires the reporter to be the rights owner or an authorized representative; being a buyer, competitor, or concerned observer is not enough to submit an owner-level notice.

Etsy sends an email confirmation and an outcome notification, and the reporter can view the status in the portal.
Prepare the ownership or authorization information before starting. Identify the protected work or mark, explain how the listing uses it, and include each relevant listing rather than a broad accusation. If you do not own the right, use the ordinary policy-reporting route for a factual concern instead of making an ownership certification you cannot support.
Is AI use itself prohibited on Etsy?
No. Etsy allows some seller-prompted AI creations when the seller contributes original prompts or other creative input and discloses the use of AI in the listing description. Etsy’s wording is direct: “Seller-prompted AI creations must disclose the use of AI.”
A report should therefore identify a concrete policy problem, not simply state that an image or product appears to involve AI. A seller may lawfully use AI as one part of a creative process if the required disclosure and other listing rules are met.
AI activity Etsy prohibits
Etsy prohibits bot-generated content, AI-generated functional instructions such as patterns, recipes, and manuals, and AI prompt bundles. If a listing sells one of these prohibited outputs, describe the actual product and the relevant listing language in your report.

When an AI-assisted listing can still be misleading
Disclosure does not make an inaccurate listing truthful. A generated scene, model, texture, or product rendering can mislead when it shows features, scale, materials, personalization, or finish that the delivered item cannot have. The key question is whether the listing gives a buyer an accurate picture of what will arrive.
What does Etsy require for listing photographs?
Etsy’s image guidance says listing photos must accurately represent the item a buyer will receive. Listings must include at least one unedited photo of the actual item against a real background, subject to Etsy’s stated exceptions.
That requirement gives you a useful test for a suspected AI-image problem:

- Do the alternate photos show the same materials, dimensions, construction, and finish as the primary image?
- Does the image include details the seller’s description, personalization options, or physical production method cannot deliver?
- Are flaws, seams, scale, or limitations hidden by a generated background or dramatic editing?
Etsy is adding a reporting reason for listings that may use misleading AI imagery. Initially, those reports are intended to help Etsy understand potential misuse and may not trigger immediate enforcement. Report what the image misrepresents, not an unsupported guess about which software produced it.
What evidence should you collect before submitting?
Evidence is easiest to preserve before the seller changes the listing or the page disappears. Create a small, organized record rather than a large folder of unrelated screenshots.
- Identify the listing. Copy the full listing URL, record the listing ID, and write down the shop name.
- Capture the page. Save screenshots of the title, description, every photograph, price, personalization claims, shipping promises, and any statement disclosing AI use.
- Mark the exact mismatch. Note the image or sentence that conflicts with what the buyer can receive. Examples include an impossible physical detail, concealed flaws, a handmade claim paired with evidence of mass production, or a missing AI disclosure where one is required.
- Separate policy from ownership. If the issue is intellectual property, identify the protected work and gather proof that you own it or are authorized to act for the owner.
- Keep dates and versions. Record when you viewed the listing and preserve screenshots that show the same page state. This helps explain changes without claiming facts you did not observe.
Do not alter screenshots in a way that removes context. If you annotate an image to point out a detail, keep the original file as well.

How should you write the explanation?
A good report is short, neutral, and tied to an observable Etsy rule. Include four elements: what the listing claims, what the evidence shows, why the difference matters to a buyer, and which policy concern you selected.

Useful wording for a misleading-image report
“The primary image shows a ceramic mug with a raised, hand-carved pattern. The description says the item is digitally printed, and the alternate photo shows a flat surface. The primary image therefore appears not to represent the item a buyer will receive.”
Useful wording for a missing-disclosure report
“The description presents this as an AI-assisted creation but does not disclose AI use. The listing’s main image also includes details that are not present in the actual-item photograph.”
Useful wording for a handmade or production concern
“The listing claims the item is handmade, but the photos and text show identical stock products across multiple listings and do not explain an original making process. Please review whether the representation meets Etsy’s handmade rules.”
Use “appears,” “shows,” and “states” for facts you can document. Avoid calling the seller a fraud, naming a suspected identity, or asserting intent that you cannot prove. Etsy states that “Fraud of any kind is prohibited on Etsy,” but your report should give the review team evidence of the suspected violation rather than a conclusion without support.
What happens after you report?
Etsy says ordinary reports are confidential and sent to specialist review teams. The team may contact the seller or take other action, but Etsy does not promise a particular result or timetable for every report.

Do not submit the same violation repeatedly and do not discuss a flagged item in Etsy community spaces. Public discussion can expose personal information, create duplicate reports, and make it harder to keep the complaint focused on verifiable facts.
For an intellectual-property notice, Etsy provides an email confirmation, an outcome notification, and status information in the Reporting Portal. Keep those messages with your ownership records in case the portal requests clarification.
What situations commonly justify a report?
These examples show how to distinguish a reportable mismatch from a mere suspicion:
- Impossible product detail: an AI scene depicts transparent, articulated, or engraved features that the listed manufacturing method cannot produce.
- Concealed condition: a generated background or heavy alteration hides cracks, seams, scale, or other characteristics visible in the item a buyer would receive.
- False personalization: a preview promises a name, color, or shape that the seller’s stated process cannot reproduce.
- Misleading handmade claim: the listing says the product is handmade while the available evidence points to a mass-produced item.
- Missing disclosure: the seller uses seller-prompted AI in a creation but does not disclose that use in the description.
- Prohibited AI output: the listing sells a bot-generated product, AI-generated functional instructions such as a pattern or recipe, or an AI prompt bundle.
- Intellectual-property copying: a listing uses a protected illustration, logo, design, or invention without authorization. This belongs in the Reporting Portal when submitted by the rights owner or authorized representative.
Aesthetic dislike, an unusual style, or the mere possibility that an image was generated is not, by itself, proof of a policy violation. Connect the report to a specific representation, disclosure, prohibited format, or owned right.
What should you check immediately before submitting?
- The URL and listing ID are copied correctly.
- The shop name is recorded.
- Screenshots include the title, description, photos, price, personalization, shipping promises, and AI disclosure, if any.
- Your explanation identifies one concrete mismatch and avoids speculation.
- You selected the listing route for a policy concern, the shop route for a broader pattern, or the IP Portal for an owner-level rights claim.
- You have not already submitted the same report repeatedly.
Once the report is submitted, retain your evidence and wait for Etsy’s review rather than escalating through unrelated community posts.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I report a listing if I have not purchased it?
A purchase is not required for an ordinary Etsy policy report. You can flag a listing based on what its page shows, but make clear which representation or rule concerns you and preserve the page evidence that supports it.
Does adding an AI disclosure make every AI-assisted listing acceptable?
No. Disclosure addresses one requirement only. The listing must still show the item truthfully, avoid prohibited AI outputs, and comply with Etsy’s other policies; an inaccurate photograph can remain misleading even when AI use is disclosed.

Etsy says the newer reporting reason for potentially misleading AI imagery is initially intended to help it understand possible misuse. A report may therefore inform review and policy development without producing immediate removal.
What if the listing changes after I submit my report?
Keep the original URL, listing ID, dated screenshots, and your submitted explanation. If Etsy contacts you, those records let you describe exactly what you saw instead of relying on a later version of the page.
