You can replace many Google Play-distributed apps with open-source Android clients, but replacing an app is not the same as replacing the online account or service behind it. Start by identifying the job you need done, choose a maintained project, install it through a source you can verify, and test synchronization, notifications, imports, exports, links, and backups before removing the original app. F-Droid is the main catalog for libre Android software; Aurora Store is a Google Play frontend for cases where an app is available only through Play; direct developer releases and tools such as Obtainium require you to verify the publisher and maintain updates yourself.
What an app replacement can—and cannot—change
An Android app is usually one layer of a larger service. A calendar app displays and edits events, while a calendar provider stores and synchronizes them. An email app is a local interface to one or more mail accounts, while the configured mail provider still receives, stores, and delivers messages. A gallery or file manager may work entirely on the device, but cloud backup, remote shares, and account-based features remain separate services.
That distinction determines what privacy you gain. A local gallery can reduce the amount of activity handled by a proprietary viewer, but it does not stop a backup provider from receiving photos. A different calendar client can still send event data to Google Calendar, Outlook, Nextcloud, or Exchange if you leave that account connected. An open-source email client does not create a private mailbox; it connects to the provider you configure.
- App replacement: changing the software installed on the phone.
- Service replacement: changing where your calendar, mail, files, or backups are stored and processed.
- Both: installing a new client and moving the underlying account or data to another provider.
Decide which of these outcomes you want before installing anything. Otherwise, you may spend time changing the interface while the same cloud service continues to receive the same data.

Where to obtain open-source Android apps
F-Droid: a libre-software catalog and update client
F-Droid is a repository and Android client focused on free and open-source software. The F-Droid project describes its default repository this way: “The default repo is hosted at f-droid.org, which contains only bona fide libre software.” The client lets you browse packages, install them, and track updates. It can notify you about updates, optionally install updates automatically, and check repository index signatures and APK hashes.
Those safeguards make F-Droid a useful starting point when you want a catalog built around libre licensing rather than a general-purpose app store. They do not guarantee that every listed app is current, actively maintained, compatible with your phone, or suitable for your needs. Inclusion requirements differ from Google Play’s, and Privacy Guides cautions that the catalog can contain older or unmaintained applications.
Before installing from F-Droid, open the project’s listing and check its last update, supported Android versions, permissions, issue activity, and release notes. Treat the listing as a source of provenance and metadata, not as proof that the app is a complete substitute for a Google app.

Aurora Store: a Play frontend, not an independent catalog
Aurora Store is an unofficial FOSS client for Google Play. It is useful when you still need an application distributed through Play, but it does not remove Google’s role in delivery. F-Droid’s listing states that Aurora depends on Google Play servers and flags transmission of app and device information to those servers as anti-features.
Use Aurora only with that dependency understood. It can change how you access Play, not where Play-hosted packages come from or which Play services are involved. Check the app’s publisher, signing information, requested permissions, and update behavior just as you would with any other source. Do not describe an app obtained through Aurora as independent of Google.

Direct releases and Obtainium
Some projects publish signed APKs or release feeds from their own sites or code-hosting pages. Privacy Guides identifies direct developer releases and Obtainium as possible acquisition routes, while placing the verification burden on the user. You must confirm that the source really belongs to the project, that the download is authentic, and that updates will continue to arrive.
Direct installation can be appropriate when a project is not in F-Droid or Play, but it creates more maintenance work. Android may ask you to allow the browser or file manager you used to install unknown apps; the exact wording and settings path vary by Android release. Grant that permission only to the source you are using, install the package, and revoke the permission afterward if your device offers that control. Prefer a project’s documented signature or checksum procedure when one is available.

- Define the job. Write down whether you need local viewing, account synchronization, notifications, search, sharing, import/export, backup, or integration with another app. “Replace Google Calendar,” for example, could mean replacing only the calendar screen or also leaving the Google account.
- Find a candidate from a project listing. Check the current release, minimum Android version, permissions, maintenance activity, and documented features. A listing version is a snapshot, not a promise about future releases.
- Select the acquisition route. Prefer F-Droid when the project is available there and you want repository-managed updates. Use Aurora when the required package is Play-only and you accept Google Play server dependence. Use a direct release or Obtainium only when you can verify the publisher and maintain updates.
- Install without removing the original. Keep the existing app available while you test. If Android shows a source or permission warning, stop and verify that the package came from the project you intended.
- Recreate accounts and import data. Add the same provider only if you want its synchronization. For a service migration, export data from the old provider and import it into the new one using the formats and instructions supported by both services.
- Test essential behavior. Create and edit a test item, force a sync, check notifications, open links, import a small sample, export it again, and verify that backups or attachments work. Test on mobile data as well as Wi-Fi if the app is expected to work away from home.
- Change defaults and disable the old app carefully. Set the new handler for calendars, mail links, files, or images only after testing. Disable or uninstall the old app only when you have confirmed access to your data and a recovery path.
- Plan updates. Record where the app came from and check that source regularly. A replacement without a dependable update path can become a security or compatibility problem.

Fossify Calendar
Fossify Calendar is a sensible candidate when your immediate goal is a different calendar interface with reminders and account synchronization. Its F-Droid listing describes synchronization with Google Calendar, Outlook, Nextcloud, and Exchange. That flexibility is also the main privacy caveat: if you connect one of those accounts, event data continues to travel through that provider.
The indexed F-Droid listing showed version 1.10.3 with Android 8.0 as the minimum at the time of the 2026-10-21 source snapshot. Releases can change, so check the current listing on the day you install. Test recurring events, time-zone changes, invitations, reminders, and edits made from another device before relying on it for work or travel.
K-9 Mail
K-9 Mail is an email client rather than an email service. The F-Droid description covers multiple accounts, a unified inbox, search, background synchronization, and OpenPGP support. Those features make it suitable for users who want one open-source interface for several existing mailboxes.

The indexed listing showed version 23.1 and Android 6.0 as the minimum at the same snapshot date. Confirm the current release and Android requirement before installation. Add one account first, send a test message, receive a reply, open an attachment, search an older message, and verify that background synchronization behaves as expected under your phone’s battery restrictions. OpenPGP support also requires that you understand key generation, exchange, and recovery; installing the client alone does not encrypt every message automatically.

Fossify Gallery focuses on local photo and video organization. It can be a useful replacement for a stock gallery when your requirement is browsing media stored on the device. The listing establishes its open-source and private-gallery positioning, but your decision depends on features that vary considerably between gallery apps.
Check whether it handles the folders, removable storage, metadata, edits, sharing targets, and backup workflow you use. If your existing gallery automatically uploads images, replacing the viewer will not by itself change that backup destination. Test a copy of an important folder before changing your default image handler.
Fossify File Manager
Fossify File Manager is an open-source file explorer for essential file operations. Before switching, list the operations you perform regularly: moving and renaming files, hidden-file access, archive creation and extraction, removable-storage access, cloud connections, network shares, and opening files in other apps.
Android storage permissions and scoped-storage behavior can differ by version. Test access to internal storage, an SD card if you use one, and app-specific folders that matter to you. Keep the old manager available until you have confirmed that you can copy, restore, and share the files you need.

How much privacy does the switch provide?
Local-only use
The largest change occurs when the replacement works locally and you do not connect it to a cloud account. A local gallery or file manager can then organize on-device data without requiring the original app’s online service. You still need to consider Android permissions, backups, other apps that read the same files, and any network features you enable.
Using the same cloud account
Keeping synchronization is often the practical choice. Fossify Calendar can present a different interface while continuing to sync with Google Calendar, Outlook, Nextcloud, or Exchange. In that arrangement, the client is open source, but the selected provider remains responsible for account storage and synchronization. The same principle applies to K-9 Mail: messages remain with the mail provider you configure.
Moving the service as well
A full migration requires a provider that supports export and import, a plan for historical data, and a way to keep other devices in sync. Export a small sample first, inspect the result, and retain an original backup before deleting anything. Changing clients and changing providers are separate projects; schedule them separately so a sync problem does not become a data-loss problem.
Maintenance and security checks
- Provenance: Confirm the package came from the project’s official listing or release channel. Be wary of re-uploaded APKs with altered names or signatures.
- Signing and updates: Keep the same source when possible so update signatures can be verified. F-Droid’s client checks repository index signatures and APK hashes; direct-download users must perform the project’s own verification steps.
- Activity: Look at recent releases, issue responses, and documented Android support. An app that was once excellent can become unsuitable if maintenance stops.
- Permissions: Compare requested permissions with the app’s job. A calendar needs calendar access for synchronization; a local gallery should not need unrelated account access for basic browsing.
- Compatibility: Check the minimum Android version and test on the exact phone and Android build you use. Indexed versions are snapshots and may not describe the current release.
- Recovery: Keep exports, installation records, and a way to reinstall the previous app until the replacement has passed your tests.
Common failure modes and fixes
The app installs but does not synchronize
First determine whether you connected an account at all. If you did, verify credentials, calendar or mail permissions, background-data access, and the phone’s battery-optimization rules. Trigger a manual sync and inspect the app’s account or synchronization status. If local operation works but remote changes do not arrive, the issue is usually provider configuration, background restrictions, or unsupported account behavior rather than the local display.
Notifications arrive late
Check notification permission, channel settings, background activity, and battery restrictions. Compare a test event or message created on another device with one created locally. Some providers use polling rather than immediate push delivery; the replacement may therefore behave differently even when synchronization is functioning.

A file, photo, or attachment cannot be opened
Confirm that the replacement can read the storage location and that another installed app handles the file type. For removable storage, re-authorize the folder if Android requests it. Keep the original app until you can open and export representative files, including large videos and archived documents if those are part of your routine.
An update is missing
Check which channel supplied the installed package. F-Droid, Aurora, and a direct release may publish at different times or use different package signatures. Do not install a second copy over the first without confirming that the signatures are compatible; instead, follow the project’s migration instructions or export your data before changing channels.
When an open-source replacement is not the right choice
Do not switch solely because an app is labeled open source. Stay with the existing app, or run both, when you depend on a feature the candidate does not document: enterprise calendar policies, specialized mail authentication, automatic cloud backup, advanced editing, network-share protocols, or a particular hardware integration. A smaller feature set can be an advantage for a local tool, but it is a liability when it breaks a workflow you cannot replace.

Also reconsider when the acquisition path is unclear. F-Droid’s catalog and update mechanisms reduce some verification work, while Aurora still relies on Google Play servers and direct APK distribution places more responsibility on you. The most private choice is not useful if you cannot keep it updated or recover your data.
A practical first-day checklist
- Write down the app’s actual job and the cloud services it currently uses.
- Choose one candidate and read its current project listing.
- Record the source, version, minimum Android requirement, permissions, and update method.
- Install without deleting the original.
- Test one local action and one synchronized action, if synchronization is required.
- Verify notifications, links, imports, exports, attachments, and backups.
- Review which provider still receives your data.
- Set Android defaults only after the tests pass.
- Keep a recovery copy and monitor updates from the chosen channel.
Bottom line
Begin with F-Droid when you want a libre-software catalog and a client that tracks repository updates. Consider Aurora only for Play-distributed apps you still need, remembering that it remains dependent on Google Play servers. Use direct releases or Obtainium when you can verify the publisher and accept the extra update responsibility. Fossify Calendar, K-9 Mail, Fossify Gallery, and Fossify File Manager cover useful calendar, email, gallery, and file-browsing roles, but each must be checked against your Android version and daily workflow. Most importantly, replacing the client does not automatically replace the account: privacy improves only to the extent that the data path and service behind the app also match your goal.
