Repair a chip by cleaning away only loose paint, priming just the exposed plastic or resin, dabbing on a closely matched water-based acrylic, rebuilding any lost texture, and protecting the dry repair with a compatible matte varnish. Do not blanket-prime intact factory paint, flood the area with solvent, or assume a color name is an exact match: the factory formula for each pre-painted terrain set is not published in the sources available here.
What you need before touching the terrain
Gather the materials before you start so the damaged piece is not handled repeatedly while wet:
- A phone or camera for documenting the intact finish and the damage.
- A soft dry brush and, if necessary, a lint-free swab that is only slightly damp.
- A fine hobby brush for controlled dabbing.
- A small amount of acrylic primer for exposed plastic or resin.
- Water-based acrylic paints for the color repair.
- A palette, clean water and a paper towel for thinning and removing excess paint.
- Texture material or flock if the chip removed a textured ground layer.
- PVA glue and water for resealing flock.
- A compatible matte varnish, preferably in a spray intended for terrain or miniatures.
Games Workshop describes its Citadel Colour range as covering Base, Layer, Shade, Technical and Spray products, with a comparison tool at Warhammer Colour. A fine brush, acrylic paint and matte varnish are also identified as useful terrain-painting supplies by Warhammer Guild’s terrain guide.
Identify what the chip has exposed
The repair depends more on the depth and texture of the damage than on its diameter. Photograph an intact nearby area first, then inspect the chip under strong, neutral light. Look for one of these surfaces:

| What you see | What it means | Repair implication |
|---|---|---|
| A lighter or darker paint color but no loose edge | A surface scuff or thin finish loss | Clean gently and touch up with acrylic; primer is usually unnecessary. |
| Dark, uniform undercoat | The factory paint has exposed its primer | Test the color and dab acrylic directly over the stable primer. |
| Bare plastic or resin | The coating has been removed to the substrate | Spot-prime only this exposed area, let it dry, then paint. |
| Fibers, grit or a granular ground | Flock or another texture has been damaged | Restore the base color, replace texture where needed, then reseal it. |
| A glossy, satin or very flat halo around the chip | The surrounding finish is part of the visual match | Match the color first and choose a final varnish that does not create a new sheen. |
Pre-painted boards are described by Wargames Terrain Workshop’s care guidance as mostly hand-painted with water-based acrylics. That makes a small acrylic touch-up the closest evidence-supported medium. It does not establish a universal formula, color code or hardness specification for every pre-painted Warhammer 40,000 set.
Step-by-step chip repair
1. Photograph and map the damage
Take a close photograph of the chip and a second photograph showing its location on the building, board or scatter piece. Record whether it is on a high-contact edge, a flat wall, a drybrushed ridge or a flocked base. This gives you a reference for color and texture while the repair is in progress and helps you notice whether later handling creates new damage.
2. Remove only material that is already loose
Use a soft, dry brush to sweep away dust and detached flakes. If a flake remains, touch it with a lint-free swab that is barely damp rather than wetting the panel. Stop immediately if the surrounding coating softens, becomes tacky or lifts on the swab. The available care guidance identifies water-based acrylic paint; aggressive solvents therefore have no evidence-based justification for routine cleaning and can enlarge the damaged area.

3. Stabilize an edge that is lifting
If paint is curling around the chip, do not paint over the loose lip. Remove only the section that will come away with minimal pressure. A hard, intact edge is easier to disguise than a loose edge that later peels beneath the new paint. If the coating continues to lift with gentle brushing, pause the repair and treat the piece as a broader repaint or conservation job rather than forcing a spot repair.
4. Prime only exposed plastic or resin
When the chip reveals bare plastic or resin, place a tiny amount of primer on that spot with a fine brush. Keep the primer inside the exposed boundary and allow it to dry fully. Warhammer Guild identifies spray primer as a terrain tool, but spraying an entire pre-painted piece is unnecessary for a small chip and can cover intact detail. If the chip reveals a stable dark primer rather than bare substrate, skip this step and paint over the existing primer.

Do not prime intact factory paint unless you have decided to repaint the whole section. A new primer layer can alter the texture, obscure weathering and create a visible patch around a repair that should have remained thin.
5. Select and test a color
Start with candidate colors from the Citadel Colour comparison tool at paint.warhammer.com, using the category that matches the job: Base for opaque coverage, Layer for a thinner color transition, Shade for a controlled recess effect, Technical for special textures or effects, and Spray for broad priming or coverage work. These categories help you choose a working paint, but a named color is not proof of an exact factory match.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Test each candidate on the underside, inside face or another hidden edge. Let the test dry before judging it; wet acrylic commonly appears different in value and sheen. Compare the dry sample with the surrounding terrain under the same light in which the piece is normally displayed or played. If no single color matches, a small mixture can be made on the palette, but record the proportions so a second chip can be repaired consistently.
6. Dab on thin acrylic layers
Load the fine brush lightly, place paint in the center of the exposed area and work toward the edge. Avoid brushing back and forth across intact factory paint. Feather the perimeter with a nearly dry brush so the boundary fades rather than forming a raised ring. Let the first layer dry, then add another thin layer if the substrate still shows. Several thin applications preserve texture and control better than one heavy blob.
Keep the new paint slightly inside the original boundary on the first pass. Once it is dry, expand only as far as needed to blend the value. On a flat wall, a controlled dab may be enough; on a drybrushed ridge, reproduce the lighter highlight with a restrained second pass rather than flooding the recess with opaque color.

7. Rebuild lost texture or flock
If the chip removed grit, flock or a textured ground, restore the underlying color before adding material. Apply a small amount of suitable adhesive or texture medium, place the texture to match the surrounding direction and density, and allow it to dry without handling. Do not try to hide missing texture with a thick coat of paint: the different surface will catch light and remain visible.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Wargames Terrain Workshop recommends approximately a 50/50 mix of PVA glue and water over flock, followed by another coat after the first dries. This is guidance for resealing flock against wear from armies and dice impacts, not a universal formula for every material. Apply it sparingly so the flock does not become glossy or collapse into a hard lump.
8. Match the final sheen and protect the repair
After the color and texture are completely dry, inspect the area from several angles. If the repaired spot is noticeably shinier or flatter than its surroundings, a light, compatible matte varnish coat can unify the finish. Warhammer Guild recommends matte varnish spray to protect terrain paint from chips and scratches. Spray in light passes from the distance specified on the varnish label; a wet coat can pool in texture and create its own sheen.
Compatibility is not universal across all pre-painted Warhammer terrain products. Test the varnish on a hidden area first and allow it to cure before judging the result. If the test softens, clouds or changes the original finish, do not use that varnish on the visible repair.
Choose the repair method by damage, texture and use
| Situation | Recommended scope | Main risk to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Small color scuff on smooth plastic or resin | Clean, dab thin acrylic, feather the edge and optionally varnish. | Creating a raised paint mound. |
| Chip through to stable dark primer | Skip spot-priming and match the surface color with thin acrylic. | Adding a primer color that changes the value. |
| Chip exposing bare plastic or resin | Spot-prime the substrate, dry it, then build color in thin layers. | Priming a large halo over intact factory paint. |
| Flocked or granular ground loss | Restore base color, replace texture, then seal with diluted PVA in two coats. | Leaving an unsealed patch that sheds during play. |
| Many chips across a high-contact piece | Assess whether an intentional section repaint is more consistent than dozens of spot repairs. | Accumulating mismatched dots and uneven sheen. |
| Display-only terrain with one hidden chip | Use the smallest invisible repair possible; varnish may be unnecessary if handling is minimal. | Changing the original finish for no practical benefit. |
How to match a factory-painted finish when the exact color is unknown
No consulted source publishes the factory paint formula for every pre-painted Warhammer 40,000 terrain set. Treat matching as a visual process, not a lookup-code exercise.

- These versatile brushes are ready-to-use, easy to clean, and can be reused multiple times, making them economical as well as reliable tools for any painting project.
- Bates paint brushes can be used for both oil-based paints as well as latex stains and are ideal for home or commercial projects such as decks, fences or DIY painting jobs.
- Identify the local color family: warm gray, cool gray, brown, green, red or another dominant hue.
- Separate base color from lighting effects. A drybrushed highlight, shade in a recess or dust layer may make one panel contain several apparent colors.
- Use the Warhammer Colour comparison tool to narrow candidates, then test dry samples on a hidden surface.
- Compare samples beside the damage under the intended lighting, not only under a hobby lamp.
- Choose the least conspicuous transition. A slightly imperfect color spread over a feathered edge is usually less visible than an exact center color with a sharp circular border.
Factory paint can vary between production runs, molded parts and hand-painted sections. For that reason, preserve your successful mixture in a labeled container or note the paint ratios after the first repair.

Reduce contact at vulnerable points
Edges, corners, access doors, handholds and areas where models or dice land receive more abrasion than broad wall panels. Move pieces by their strongest structural areas, avoid dragging them across the table and keep heavy scenery from rubbing during storage. A display-only piece needs less intervention than terrain moved every game.
Use a protective finish deliberately
A compatible matte varnish can reduce damage from routine scratches, but it cannot make a painted surface indestructible. Apply it only after the touch-up, flock and any washes are dry. Test first on an inconspicuous area because the available guidance does not provide one compatibility specification for every pre-painted product.
Store terrain so surfaces do not abrade
Separate pieces with soft, non-shedding material or compartments that prevent edges from knocking together. Keep flocked sections from pressing against bare plastic or rough cardboard. Remove dust with a soft brush rather than a vigorous cloth that can catch on texture.

Flock is especially vulnerable to armies, dice and repeated packing. The approximately 50/50 PVA-to-water method described by Wargames Terrain Workshop, applied once and repeated after drying, provides a practical resealing step. Use only enough liquid to bind the fibers; saturation can flatten the texture and leave an unwanted gloss.

Troubleshooting common failures
The patch looks like a bright dot
The color may be too light, too saturated or still wet. Let it dry completely, then compare it with the surrounding surface. Adjust the mixture in a hidden test area and feather a thin transition around the patch instead of adding a thick center coat.
The repair is darker than the original
A dark primer showing through, a shade pooling in the recess or a heavy first layer can all lower the value. Confirm what the chip exposed, then use a thin opaque layer over a stable primer or substrate. Do not compensate by spreading dark paint far beyond the chip.
The edge remains visible after painting
Check for a physical step, not just a color mismatch. If loose paint remains, remove only the unstable material. If texture is missing, rebuild it before applying the final color. A flat paint layer cannot reproduce a lost granular edge by itself.
The varnish turns cloudy or glossy
Stop before coating the rest of the piece. The product may be incompatible, applied too heavily or used in unsuitable conditions. Test another compatible finish on a hidden area only after the original test has fully dried; if no finish passes, leave the stable repair unvarnished and handle the terrain carefully.
More paint lifts while cleaning
Stop using moisture and solvents. Isolate the affected area, allow it to dry and reassess whether the piece has a broader adhesion problem. A spot repair is appropriate only when the surrounding coating is stable.
What “battle ready” means for a repaired piece
Games Workshop’s Battle Ready document states: “Battle Ready means your models are fully painted with a detailed or textured base.” The statement concerns the presentation standard for painted models, not a guarantee that a pre-painted terrain repair will be invisible or that a particular varnish is approved. For gaming terrain, a stable, visually coherent touch-up and secure texture are usually more useful goals than chasing a factory-identical formula that has not been published.
When a spot repair is the wrong choice
Choose a deliberate repaint of a panel or section when chips are widespread, the surrounding coating is already failing, the finish has been contaminated by an incompatible product or the original color cannot be blended without a constellation of visible patches. A full repaint requires a separate plan for cleaning, priming, color blocking, shading, texture and sealing; it should not be improvised as a larger version of one-chip repair.
For an isolated, stable chip, the controlled sequence remains the least disruptive option: remove loose material, prime only bare substrate, test and dab acrylic, restore texture when necessary, and protect the cured result with a tested finish.
