For a small tear in a down camping blanket, guide loose down back into its chamber, clean and completely dry the shell, then cover the damage with a compatible self-adhesive repair patch. Don’t pull out a protruding feather or stretch the hole. If the tear is large, the fabric is worn, or a baffle is damaged, ask the blanket maker or a qualified repair service instead. Instructions from jacket and sleeping-bag makers are useful examples, but they are not validated for every blanket fabric or construction.
First, work out what kind of damage you have
A feather tip is visible, but there is no clear tear
Don’t tug the feather outward. Patagonia advises working emerging feathers back inside, and Rab similarly recommends guiding exposed down inward; Rab cautions against enlarging the opening. For a tiny pinprick, gently reposition the down rather than automatically covering it with a patch. Rab also suggests rubbing the pinprick with wet fingers, but use the blanket maker’s care guidance before applying moisture.
Down is escaping through a visible hole or slit
For a small opening in otherwise sound fabric, return the loose down to its chamber and patch the shell. Keep the opening as small as possible while doing so. Avoid pulling, stretching, or pinching the fabric in a way that could extend the tear.
The tear is large, the shell is worn, or a chamber is affected
A patch is not a reliable substitute for repairing damaged construction. If the hole is long, the surrounding fabric is thin or brittle, or a seam or down chamber is compromised, contact the blanket’s manufacturer or a specialist. Rab describes service-center repair after a temporary patch, Norrøna recommends its repair team for larger or worn damage, and Nordisk lists textile-hole repair and down-chamber exchange among its services. These are examples of services, not confirmation that any particular company will accept an unspecified blanket.

How to patch a small tear
- Check the blanket and patch instructions. Confirm that the patch is intended for the shell material and that the blanket’s care instructions do not rule out the cleaning or application method. Patch adhesives and fabrics are not universal: Patagonia warns that gear tape does not adhere to natural or stretchy fabrics, while Decathlon describes its patch as intended for synthetic fabrics.
- Guide the down inside. Carefully return exposed down to the chamber without pulling feathers out or widening the opening.
- Clean the area and let it dry completely. Follow the directions for the chosen patch and the blanket. Cleaning methods differ: Patagonia’s jacket method recommends isopropyl alcohol, while Decathlon and Norrøna describe water or a damp cloth. Do not assume a method suitable for a jacket is safe for your blanket.
- Size and shape the patch. Cut or select a patch that covers the tear and overlaps sound fabric around it. Patagonia’s jacket guide specifies at least 1/4 inch of overlap on each side; Decathlon advises 1 cm around the tear. These are instructions for their respective methods, not a universal standard. Rab favors a circular patch to avoid corners that can lift; round off sharp corners if you cut your own. Where practical, avoid placing the patch across a stitch line.
- Apply it smoothly. Center the adhesive over the tear, then press from the middle outward to smooth bubbles and secure the edges. Follow the patch maker’s instructions for pressure, heat, and setting time. Patagonia describes optional gentle warmth for its tape and says to wait at least 24 hours before washing its repaired jacket; Norrøna also describes optional heat for its specified patch. Heat and waiting times are product-specific, not blanket-wide rules.
- Inspect before using the blanket. Check that the edges are attached and that down is no longer escaping. If the patch lifts, the tear grows, or the damage involves a chamber, stop relying on the patch and seek repair advice.
DIY patch or professional repair?
| Situation | Practical approach | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A feather is protruding through a tiny pinprick, with no clear tear | Gently guide the feather or down back inside; consult the blanket’s care instructions before using moisture. | Pulling can enlarge the opening, and a patch may not be needed for a pinprick. |
| A small hole or short tear in sound shell fabric | Use a self-adhesive fabric patch compatible with the shell, following the patch and blanket instructions. | A patch can cover a minor opening, but compatibility and application details depend on the products. |
| A large tear, worn or fragile shell, or damage to a seam or baffle | Contact the blanket maker or a qualified repair service. | The damage may require structural repair rather than a surface patch. |
Care for the blanket after patching
Use the blanket’s own care label or maker’s instructions for cleaning after the repair, and also follow the patch maker’s curing and washing directions. Do not assume the 24-hour wait in Patagonia’s jacket guidance applies to your blanket or patch. Therm-a-Rest’s Ramble Down Blanket page provides product care information, but care instructions vary by blanket.
A patch can cover a hole, but the cited manufacturer guidance does not establish that a repair restores a blanket’s original warmth or weather resistance, or guarantee how long a patch will last. If the blanket continues to lose down, have the damage assessed.
