To clear Windows Backup settings already saved to your Microsoft account, first turn off settings backup on every Windows device that uses that account. Then visit account.microsoft.com/devices, sign in to the same account, find Cloud synced settings near the bottom of the page, and choose Clear stored settings. Turning off backup stops the relevant settings from being backed up; clearing stored settings is the separate account-side step that removes settings previously backed up.
Quick answer
Microsoft’s documented sequence has two parts. First, disable Windows settings backup on every connected Windows device. Second, open the Microsoft Account Devices page, locate Cloud synced settings, and select Clear stored settings. Doing only the first step stops or changes future backup behavior but does not remove settings that were already saved to the account. Doing only the second step does not follow Microsoft’s all-devices prerequisite.
This is an account-and-settings procedure, not a Windows reset. It does not require a paid utility, a repair service, or an additional application. Use the same personal Microsoft account at each step, and keep OneDrive file management separate from Windows settings management.

What does “Clear stored settings” remove?
Windows Backup can save selected Windows settings and preferences to a Microsoft account so they can be used across Windows devices signed in with that account. Microsoft describes the available information as including installed app information, accessibility settings, accounts and passwords, personalization, language preferences, and other Windows settings. The exact list and labels can vary by Windows version, edition, interface, and the controls enabled on a particular device.

The account-page command addresses the copy of those Windows settings that was backed up previously. It is not a command to erase every item associated with the Microsoft account, remove a device from the account, or reset any computer. It also is not a general-purpose privacy deletion tool for all Microsoft services.
Three actions that are easy to confuse
- Turn off settings backup: changes what Windows sends to the account going forward. This is performed in Settings on each Windows device.
- Clear stored settings: removes settings that were previously backed up to the Microsoft account. This is performed on the account’s Devices page.
- Manage OneDrive backup or files: controls folder synchronization and OneDrive content separately. Clearing Windows settings is not documented as a way to delete OneDrive files.
If you only want to stop future settings backup, the Windows controls may be enough. If you want previously stored settings removed as well, complete both parts of the sequence. If your concern is documents, pictures, Desktop folders, or other OneDrive content, use OneDrive’s controls instead of the Cloud synced settings command.
What can Windows Backup save?
The names shown in Windows can differ, but Microsoft’s descriptions identify several broad categories:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Installed apps or app information: information Windows can use when restoring or setting up apps on another Windows device.
- Accessibility: selected accessibility preferences.
- Accounts and passwords: supported account and password-related settings.
- Personalization: choices that affect the appearance or personal feel of Windows.
- Language: language preferences and related Windows choices.
- Other Windows settings: additional preferences covered by the Windows Backup controls.
These categories describe the kinds of settings involved; they do not mean every setting on every computer is copied. Microsoft also notes that available controls can vary by Windows version and interface. If a category is not displayed on your device, do not assume that a hidden, alternate control exists or that the category is necessarily being backed up.
How do I clear Windows Backup settings from my Microsoft account?
Work through the devices first, then use the account website. The order matters because Microsoft’s guidance makes disabling settings backup on all connected devices the prerequisite for removing the stored account copy.
- Make an inventory of connected Windows devices. Include your current computer, older Windows computers you still use, and any device that may sign in with the same Microsoft account. If a computer is not in front of you, record it so you do not accidentally treat an unchecked device as complete.
- On each device, open Settings > Accounts > Windows backup. This is the current Windows 11 path. Microsoft’s guidance also covers Windows 10, where wording or screen layout can differ.
- Turn off the relevant backup controls. The page can include Remember my apps and Remember my preferences. Preference categories can include accessibility, accounts and passwords, personalization, language, and other Windows settings. Disable the controls for the settings you no longer want saved, and repeat the change on every device using the account.
- Open the account page in a browser. Go to account.microsoft.com/devices. If prompted, sign in with the same Microsoft account whose stored settings you want to clear.
- Find the cloud-settings section. Scroll toward the bottom of the Devices page and look for Cloud synced settings. Page placement can change, so use the section name rather than relying only on its position.
- Select Clear stored settings. Activate that command to remove the settings previously backed up to the account.
Microsoft’s screen-reader instructions describe the same high-level flow: disable settings backup on all devices connected to the account, then visit the account Devices page and activate Clear stored settings. The wording of buttons may change as Microsoft updates its pages, but the documented names are the most useful landmarks.
How to prepare each Windows device
On a device, open the Windows Backup page while signed in to the account you are checking. Verify the account identity before changing anything, especially if several people use the computer or if Windows offers more than one account. Review both broad controls and any category-level choices displayed beneath them.

If you have several computers, repeat the check rather than assuming that a change on one computer applies automatically to the others. The requirement is device-wide: Microsoft tells users to disable settings backup on all devices connected to the Microsoft account before removing the stored settings. A computer that is offline, rarely used, or stored away still belongs on your checklist if it uses that account.
Do not confuse signing out of Windows with turning off Windows Backup. Signing out may change which account is active, but Microsoft’s documented action is to turn off the backup controls in Settings > Accounts > Windows backup. Likewise, removing a device from the account’s device list is not described as a substitute for disabling settings backup.
Why must backup be turned off on every device?
Microsoft’s instructions establish the all-devices step before the account-side deletion. The practical reason to follow that order is to prevent a connected device from continuing to participate in settings backup while you are trying to remove the stored copy. The guidance does not promise that clearing the account copy alone will override an enabled control elsewhere.
Use a simple checklist: identify each Windows device, open its Windows Backup page, turn off the relevant controls, and mark it complete. Only after the list is complete should you use Clear stored settings. If you later enable backup again on a device, Windows may begin saving settings according to the controls you turned on; clearing existing data is not the same as permanently disabling the feature.

No. Microsoft documents OneDrive folder synchronization as a separate Windows Backup configuration. The Clear stored settings command concerns Windows settings that were backed up to the Microsoft account; Microsoft does not describe it as a way to delete files stored in OneDrive.
For example, if you are trying to stop Desktop, Documents, or Pictures from syncing, use OneDrive’s own folder-backup and synchronization controls. If you want to delete a file from OneDrive, manage that file in OneDrive. Do not use the account’s Cloud synced settings section as a substitute for either task.
What happens to settings on the computers?
The documented command removes previously backed-up settings from the account. Microsoft’s instructions do not describe it as a factory reset, an uninstall operation, or a command that wipes local Windows settings from every computer. Treat the account deletion and the local configuration as separate scopes: the account holds the stored copy, while each computer continues to have its own local configuration.

Because Microsoft does not document a separate local-reset step in this procedure, do not promise that selecting the command will immediately change the appearance or preferences on a device. If you need to change a computer’s local settings, do that in Windows Settings. The account-page action is specifically for the stored backup.
What if “Clear stored settings” is missing?
Microsoft identifies the control under Cloud synced settings on the account Devices page, usually near the bottom. The available instructions do not provide an alternate URL, a replacement menu, or a guaranteed troubleshooting sequence for an account where the control is absent.
Before escalating, check the documented conditions:
- Confirm that the browser is signed in to the same Microsoft account used on the Windows devices.
- Look for Cloud synced settings near the bottom of the Devices page, not only at the top device list.
- Verify that Windows settings backup has been turned off on every connected Windows device.
- Check whether you are looking at a personal account or an organization-managed account, since account type affects which Windows Backup features are available.
If the section or command still does not appear, Microsoft’s published guidance does not establish a different self-service route. Contact Microsoft Support for current, account-specific help rather than relying on an unverified menu path or assuming that settings were deleted.
How can I tell whether the settings were cleared?
Microsoft tells users to select Clear stored settings, but its instructions do not specify a universal propagation time, a required confirmation message, or a separate completion indicator on every account. Do not invent a waiting period or treat the absence of a message as proof that the operation failed.
Use the current account page as your reference. If the control remains available, behaves unexpectedly, or the page does not reflect the action, contact Microsoft Support. Do not test the result by checking OneDrive files: OneDrive synchronization is a different service and is not a status indicator for Windows settings storage.
Windows 11 and Windows 10 paths
Microsoft’s Windows Backup support guidance covers both Windows 11 and Windows 10. On current Windows 11 installations, use Settings > Accounts > Windows backup. Windows 10 may present different labels or layouts, so follow the equivalent Windows Backup page shown on that device rather than assuming every word will match Windows 11.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says that free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes ended on that date. The documented backup procedure can still be relevant to a Windows 10 computer, but the end-of-support status is an important security and maintenance consideration when deciding whether to keep using that device.
Personal, work, and school accounts
Consumer Windows Backup uses a personal Microsoft account. Microsoft says the Windows Backup app does not work with work or school accounts, although some settings may be available to organizational accounts when an administrator enables the relevant organization feature.
Recommended Free Tools
If the computer is managed by an employer or school, the organization may control which settings are available, whether synchronization is allowed, and which account is active. In that situation, first identify whether the device is using a personal account or an organization account. If an expected control is unavailable, an administrator may need to explain the organization’s configuration; do not assume that the personal-account procedure applies unchanged.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Stopping after turning off backup: this changes future behavior but is not the account-side removal step.
- Clearing the account before checking every device: Microsoft’s sequence requires disabling backup on all connected devices first.
- Using the wrong account: a browser can be signed in to a different Microsoft account than the one used on Windows.
- Looking for the control in Windows Settings: Clear stored settings is on the Microsoft Account Devices page, not the Windows Backup settings screen.
- Expecting OneDrive files to disappear: Windows settings storage and OneDrive file synchronization are separate.
- Assuming every label is identical: Windows versions and interfaces can show different names or categories.
- Claiming a precise deletion time: Microsoft does not specify a universal propagation period or confirmation behavior.
- Treating this as a device reset: the documented action addresses the account’s stored settings, not a factory reset or a guaranteed rewrite of local computer settings.
Which action should you take?
| Your goal | Use this action | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Stop future Windows settings backup | Turn off the relevant backup controls | Settings > Accounts > Windows backup on every connected device |
| Remove settings already stored with the account | Select Clear stored settings | Microsoft Account Devices page, under Cloud synced settings |
| Stop folder synchronization | Change OneDrive folder-backup or sync settings | OneDrive controls |
| Delete OneDrive files | Manage the files in OneDrive | OneDrive |
This comparison prevents the most common scope error: using an account-level Windows settings command when the actual goal concerns files or folders.
Frequently asked practical questions
If you are unsure which step applies, state the goal precisely. “Stop syncing settings” means disable the Windows controls. “Delete settings already saved” means complete the Devices-page action as well. “Remove files from the cloud” means use OneDrive, not Windows Backup’s stored-settings control.
