First identify where the gap is: quiet audio inside a recording, empty space between clips, or an intentional pause between episodes. In Audacity, use Truncate Silence for threshold-detected quiet stretches and ripple deletion for gaps you select manually. Then listen through the edit: neither method can tell whether a pause is meaningful just from its length.
Choose the right kind of edit

Before editing, save an untouched copy of the recordings or Audacity project. This gives you a way back if a cut removes a breath, a quiet word, or a transition you meant to keep.
Shorten quiet stretches automatically in Audacity
Truncate Silence does not look for digital zero alone. It detects audio below a threshold, measured in decibels (dB), for at least a chosen duration. A low voice, room tone, or fade can therefore qualify as silence if it stays below the selected level long enough.
- Select the audio you want to process in Audacity. For an episode, select the relevant track or tracks rather than unrelated material elsewhere in the project.
- Open the effect: choose Effect > Special > Truncate Silence. Names or menu locations can vary between Audacity versions; consult the Audacity Truncate Silence manual if the menu differs.
- Set the silence threshold. Audacity documents a range from -20 dB to -80 dB. The effect treats audio below the chosen threshold as silent when it also meets the duration condition. A less-negative threshold can catch quieter material; a more-negative threshold requires it to be quieter.
- Set the minimum duration. This is how long audio must remain below the threshold before Audacity treats it as a silence passage. Raise it to avoid trimming ordinary pauses; lower it only if the unwanted gaps are shorter.
- Choose a mode. In Truncate Detected Silence, qualifying passages are shortened to the same retained duration. In Compress Excess Silence, only the portion exceeding the detection duration is reduced proportionally.
- Choose a retained duration that preserves the pace of your show. Audacity’s manual illustrates shortening silences of at least 20 seconds to 5 seconds. Those values are an example, not a universal podcast setting.
- Preview or apply, then review the result. Listen around each shortened passage, especially at sentence boundaries and transitions. Undo the effect if it damages the rhythm or removes meaningful sound.
Keep synchronized dialogue tracks aligned
When multiple tracks are selected, Audacity’s default behavior looks for silence at the same timeline position across the selected tracks. That is generally the safer choice for a synchronized dialogue mix. Independent truncation can shorten each track separately and make speakers drift out of sync. Use independent processing only for material whose timing does not need to stay linked.

Watch out for fades and clip-boundary gaps
Because detection depends on level and duration, Truncate Silence can catch a quiet fade or other low-level sound you intended to retain. Audacity advises applying the effect before adding fades if you need to add fades later. The effect may also fail to process gaps between clips unless the preference Editing a clip can move other clips is enabled. Check the clip-movement preference if a visible gap remains untouched.
Remove a specific gap manually
Use manual editing when you can identify the exact unwanted region and want control over what stays. Audacity’s basic editing guide explains the distinction between closing a gap with ripple editing and keeping its duration with silence.

- Select the unwanted interval in the waveform or between clips. Play across the selection to confirm it contains no speech, breath, music, or transition you want.
- Use Close gap (ripple) to remove the selected time and move following audio earlier. If later material across several tracks must remain aligned, use an across-track ripple delete.
- Audition the edit. Listen to the words on either side and the transition into what follows. Undo and adjust the selection if the result sounds abrupt.
Do not use Silence Audio to remove elapsed time. It replaces the selected sound with silence while preserving the duration, so it mutes the region but does not close the gap. For spoken-word pacing, preserve natural breaths and remove long dead-air stretches rather than every pause; cutting every pause can make speech sound rushed. Publish the edited podcast correctly on YouTube
YouTube’s podcast feature is not an audio-only upload workflow. A podcast show is a playlist, and each episode in it is a video. An MP3 by itself cannot be turned directly into a YouTube podcast episode. After editing the audio, use your production workflow to export it or make the finished episode video, then add the video to the podcast playlist.

If you mean a continuous live stream
A continuous live stream that plays files is a different production path from a podcast playlist of video episodes. The YouTube live-stream help page is available at Get started with live streaming. The details here do not establish a particular encoder setup or bitrate, so do not treat the audio-editing steps above as live-stream configuration instructions.
