Wash the tumbler with water and mild detergent, using a soft cloth or non-abrasive sponge. Rinse it thoroughly and dry it with a soft cloth. Check the maker’s care instructions first: plastic types and product recommendations differ, and persistent haze may be surface damage that cleaning cannot reverse.
Why a plastic tumbler looks cloudy
Cloudiness can come from more than one source, and appearance alone does not reliably identify which one applies.
- Water deposits: Hard water can leave mineral spots or deposits as water dries. Thorough drying helps prevent new spots, according to the Choice plastic drinkware care guide.
- Detergent or drink residue: Leftover detergent, grease, or food particles can make commercial plastic drinkware look dull if it is not cleaned and rinsed adequately, the same guide notes.
- Scratches or other surface damage: Plastic can scratch, and rough tools or abrasive cleaning can worsen its appearance. Cleaning may not restore clarity if the surface itself is damaged.
- Product-specific exposure: Fortessa Tableware Solutions’ copolyester care guidance warns that sunscreen exposure at high temperatures can cause clouding or staining. That warning applies to the material guidance it describes; it is not a general explanation for ordinary water spots.
There is no universal visual test established for distinguishing removable deposits from permanent damage across all tumbler plastics. Start with the safest cleaning method rather than trying to diagnose haze by appearance alone.
How to clean a cloudy plastic tumbler safely
- Check the tumbler’s care instructions. Read its label or the maker’s guidance before choosing a cleaner or using a dishwasher. The American Cleaning Institute’s plastic-cleaning guidance recommends following manufacturer instructions and testing a cleaner on an inconspicuous area.
- Wash gently. Use water and mild detergent with a soft cloth or non-abrasive sponge. Carlisle FoodService Products’ polycarbonate drinkware care instructions warn against abrasive tools that can scratch plastic.
- Rinse thoroughly. Remove loosened residue and detergent rather than letting them dry on the surface.
- Dry with a soft cloth. Wiping away remaining water helps reduce new spots.
- Inspect the surface. If haze remains, avoid escalating to aggressive scrubbing or an unverified chemical treatment. Ask the manufacturer about the product or consider replacement if the plastic appears permanently damaged.
When a product-specific method may help
For its classic insulated drinkware, Tervis says to handwash with mild detergent if dishwasher residue or haze appears. If haze remains, Tervis suggests trying a very small amount of baking soda on a soft, wet cloth. This is a Tervis-specific instruction, not a universal recipe for plastic tumblers. What to avoid
- Steel wool, metal scouring pads, and harsh abrasives: These can scratch plastic and make it look worse.
- Assuming every tumbler is dishwasher-safe: Dishwasher and cleaner compatibility depend on the product. Follow its own care directions.
- Bleach unless the maker permits it: The Choice guide specifically warns that chlorine bleach can cause permanent cloudiness in the plastic drinkware it covers. That is a product-guide warning, not a guarantee about every plastic formulation.
- Universal vinegar, citric-acid, or descaler recipes: The manufacturer guidance cited here does not establish these as validated methods for all tumbler materials.
- Expecting cleaning to reverse scratches: Gentle cleaning can remove residue, but it cannot be relied on to undo surface damage.
When to stop cleaning
If a gentle wash, thorough rinse, and soft-cloth drying do not improve the tumbler, stop before trying harsher tools or chemicals. Persistent cloudiness may be permanent. Check with the maker for product-specific care advice; if the tumbler is visibly damaged, replacement may be the practical option.
